Smokers across the Bradford District arebeing urged to ‘split up’ from cigarettes andend their relationship with smoking asStoptober returns in October. With support from family and friends it is

hoped that smokers within the district will findthat Stoptober is the right time to call it quitsand re-evaluate their relationship with smoking.Research has shown that while two thirds of

smokers want to quit, they don’t make a quitattempt or have a fear of failure.Smokers can get free local support through

Bradford Council’s Living Well website and bysigning up to the Stoptober campaign. Bysigning up, smokers have access to theStoptober app, Facebook messenger bot, dailyemails, a Personal Quit Plan and Stoptoberonline communities. The Living Well Service can also help people

to quit from shisha and the use of chewingtobacco like Paan, Naswar and Ghutka. Not smoking is now the norm in England - 4

out of 5 people in the Bradford District don’tsmoke. Despite smoking rates being lower than

ever before, there were still over 73,000smokers with over 2,000 still dying fromsmoking related illness in the district in 2018.Stoptober is back for its eighth year and

since launching in 2012, the campaign hasdriven over 1.9 million quit attempts and is thebiggest mass participation quit attempt in thecountry.Latest figures from the University College

London Smoking Toolkit Study suggest thatsmoking rates in England are dropping at thefastest rate in over a decade, with around 200fewer smokers every hour.Public Health Minister Jo Churchill said:

"Thanks to our tough action on tobacco, smoking rates are falling faster than in years –presenting us with the real opportunity for asmoke-free society by 2030.“Despite this progress, smoking persists in

some areas, often those with other challenges, and unfortunately remains the single biggestpreventable cause of premature death. Thisinequality cannot continue. "I want all smokers to quit, so please, take

advantage of the support available thisStoptober and enjoy all the health, social andfinancial benefits this will bring when yousucceed.”

A simple arthritis drug could be aneffective, low cost solution to treatpatients with blood cancers such aspolycythemia vera (PV) and essentialthrombocythemia (ET), a breakthroughstudy by the University of Sheffield hasshown.Led by Dr Martin Zeidler, from the

University of Sheffield’s Department ofBiomedical Science and Dr SebastianFrancis from the Department ofHaematology at the Royal HallamshireHospital, as well as the Universities ofOxford and Cambridge, the study resultsshow that methotrexate (MTX) – a drug onthe World Health Organisation list ofessential medicines that is commonly usedto treat rheumatoid arthritis – significantlyreduces the symptoms associated with thedisease.Every year around 6,000 people in the

UK are diagnosed with either PV or ET,related blood cancers that cause anoverproduction of red blood cells (PV) orblood-clotting platelets (ET). Patients oftensuffer with itching, headaches, weight loss, fatigue and night sweats.Although current treatments are usually

able to control the increased blood counts, they provide little relief from sometimesdebilitating symptoms that can often have asignificant impact on quality of life.Building on previous Medical Research

Council-funded work in the Zeidler lab thatidentified methotrexate as an inhibitor of theJAK/STAT signalling pathway, this studyexamined hospital records to identifyexisting ET and PV patients already takingmethotrexate for other diseases.Despite the small numbers involved and

the presence of background rheumatoidarthritis, these patients reported significantlylower symptom scores than patients nottaking methotrexate. The misregulation of the JAK/STAT

signalling pathway in humans is central tothe development of Myeloproliferativeneoplasms (MPNs), the collective term forprogressive blood cancers like ET and PVand is also central to many inflammatoryprocesses such as those associated withrheumatoid arthritis.Lab-based results showed that low doses

of methotrexate acted as a powerfulsuppressor of JAK/STAT pathway activation– even in cells carrying the mutated generesponsible for MPNs in patients.Dr Zeidler said: “While we still need to

undertake a clinical trial to validate thesefindings, our results are very encouragingand suggest that a simple drug that hasbeen used for nearly 40 years to treatarthritis can provide significant relief toblood cancer sufferers.“Patients we tested showed a

pronounced improvement in symptoms, something conventional treatments havebeen unable to provide.“Given the very low cost of MTX, this

research could offer an effective therapy ona budget accessible to healthcare systemsthroughout the world – marking a potentiallysubstantial clinical and health economicbenefit.”An 81 year old PV patient based in

California commented: “Methotrexateseemed to do a very nice job of controllingitching and night sweats. My subjectiveexperience of MTX was of a PV holiday.”MTX has been used for 40 years to treat

inflammatory diseases includingrheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease andpsoriasis. Even though the mechanisms bywhich MTX acts in these diseases had notpreviously been understood, the safety andeffectiveness of MTX is well documentedand many millions of patients regularly takethe drug. Diseases such as rheumatoidarthritis all feature inflammatory processesdriven by JAK/STAT activity and theeffectiveness of MTX in these inflammatorydiseases may well be a consequence of itsability to dampen the JAK/STAT pathway.

Kashmiri-Afghani-British artistshowcases essence of Indian architecture

Crumbling palaces, echoing pillaredhalls, mesmerising carving and dreamsin stone are the inspiration for this,Natasha Kumar’s latest show at RailingsGallery, an exhibition of unique workson paper that captures the essence ofIndian architecture. Quarter Kashmiri and quarter

Afghani on her father’s side, distilledDerbyshire on her mother's, the sub-continent is in her artistic genes. Her work captures the spaces and

elements she seeks out on her journeysaround North India. The sense of place, rich emotion and

meaning that she finds, Natasha bringsback to us conveyed through richcolours, intricate design, subtle andevocative textures. Always with a twistthat makes her work unique, andexciting. In that spirit, and with Diwali

approaching, is Ganesha, gazing from hisstone step-well niche. Ever ready toassist us on our own journeys of fortuneand success, he carries his symbolicimplements in hand: the broken tusk towrite the Vedas; the goad to check andguide; the mace to strike obstacles. Anda bowl of ladoos, sweet blessings. The patina of ancient stonework and

colours of Rajasthan in the Carved Jaliseries take us to the echoing, eeriespaces of Bundi Palace. In the Choti Jali series bright sunlight

pierces the private windows of thewomen’s quarters. The abstract and the

actual come together to vivid effect inthe Rasa Collection, Natasha’s ownmeditation on that quintessential NorthIndian motif, the chhatri.

Natasha Kumar’s first show was at theage of 17, the Royal Academy SummerExhibition. Since then via Londongalleries and art fairs, exhibitions at theRoyal Geographical Society and a 5-month solo show at the Southbank, shehas acquired an extensive followingamong discerning collectors in the UKand worldwide. Last year Soho House bought her

work for its latest premises in Mumbai, and she was won the Rise ArtsInternational Screen-printing Award, judged by Harland Miller. In her work it emerges as a riotous

collision of colour and character, a senseof place and people and palace. Not aTaj Mahal in sight.Eloquent Spaces at Railings Gallery

High dose statins could be madeavailable directly from high streetpharmacies as part of the NHS LongTerm Plan to cut heart disease andstroke, NHS chief executive SimonStevens has announced. In a new review, England’s top

pharmacist Dr Keith Ridge andnewly-appointed director of primarycare, Dr. Nikki Kanani, will look athow the cholesterol-busting drugscould be provided by high streetchemists.Although low dose statins can be

given over the counter, they are notgenerally made available bypharmaceutical firms, and makingthe most effective and powerfulversions safely available, without adoctor’s prescription, could preventthousands more deaths andcountless more heart attacks andstrokes. It’s estimated that as many as two-

thirds of people most at risk of heartattack and stroke do not take statins, but would benefit from doing so.Statins have been shown to be

effective, with minimal side-effects,and even a small reduction incholesterol from these drugs is ableto save lives.New research from Cambridge

University - and funded by theBritish Heart Foundation -published at the European Societyof Cardiology Conference in Paristhis week, has shown that thebenefits of statins are potentiallyeven higher than previouslyreported. The findings of the NHS England

and Improvement review will bepresented to manufacturers and theMedicines and Healthcare productsRegulatory Agency (MHRA) - themedicines watchdog - which wouldhave the final say.

Speaking at the Expo health andcare innovation conference inManchester NHS chief executiveSimon Stevens said: Pharmacists arehighly trained health professionalswho are greatly valued by patients.Since the NHS will be funding localchemists to undertake health checks,it makes sense to consider whetherthere are a broader range of

medicines that patients could accessconveniently and locally on the highstreet.“So the NHS will now work with

the MHRA and industry to see howwe can best make this happen.“After cancer lung scanning trucks

in supermarket carparks and HighStreet heart checks, this is anotherstep towards making care and

treatment more accessible, convenient and effective.”The review comes as the NHS is

introducing heart checks on theHigh Street as part of the new £13billion five-year contract forcommunity pharmacists. From next month, they will start

to develop and test an earlydetection service to identify people

who may have undiagnosed high-risk conditions like high bloodpressure for referral for furthertesting and treatment, with a view torolling out to all communitypharmacies in 2021-22.The NHS Long Term Plan,

published earlier this year, said thatlocal NHS teams will activelyidentify and support more peopleliving with high cholesterol whocould benefit from statins, rollingout care to as many as 380,000 morepeople, supported by nationwideprimary care networks.Statins help to reduce the level of

‘bad cholesterol’ in the blood, whichleads to fatty deposits building upand hardening arteries, causingincreased risk of heart attack, strokeand coronary heart disease -contributing to around 7% of alldeaths in England every year.Although high cholesterol can run

in families, it is often caused byconsuming too much fatty food, nottaking enough exercise, beingoverweight, smoking and drinkingexcess alcohol. People at high risk of

cardiovascular disease – defined byNICE as more than 10% chance of aheart attack or stroke in years – arefirst offered lifestyle advice to lowercholesterol, and if that is noteffective, they are then offeredstatins. If only 45% of people with a high

risk of cardiovascular disease wereidentified and treated, 6,000 strokesand heart attacks could be avoidedover the next ten years. Conditions like heart failure and

stroke require treatment costing thehealth service more than £7 billionevery year, with knock-on effectsworth around £16 billion due to thelife-long impact and disability.

BBC’s Executive Complaints Unit (ECU)has ruled that BBC Breakfast presenterNaga Munchetty breached guidelines bycriticising President Donald Trump forperceived racism.

In July, Munchetty spoke about onlinecomments made by the US President afterhe told opponents to “go back” to the“places from which they came”.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast on 17 Julyafter Mr Trump’s remarks, Munchetty said:“Every time I have been told, as a woman ofcolour, to go back to where I came from, thatwas embedded in racism.

“Now I’m not accusing anyone of anythinghere, but you know whatcertain phrases mean.”

Munchetty said she felt“absolutely furious” andsuggested many people in theUK might feel the same way.

“I can imagine lots ofpeople in this country will befeeling absolutely furious thata man in that position feels it’sokay to skirt the lines withusing language like that,” shetold co-presenter DanWalker.

Her comments followed MrTrump posting severalmessages that madereferences to the Democratpoliticians Ilhan Omar,Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,Ayanna Pressley and RashidaTlaib.

“Why don’t they go backand help fix the totally brokenand crime infested placesfrom which they came,” hewrote on Twitter on 14 July.

The BBC journalist had, atthe time, received praiseonline for her “off-script”moment.

The BBC said the she wasentitled to her own views buthad gone “beyond what theguidelines allow for”. It said

any action taken as a result of the findingswould be published later.

A BBC spokeswoman said thecorporation’s Executive Complaints Unit(ECU) ruled: “While Ms Munchetty wasentitled to give a personal response to thephrase ‘go back to your own country’ as itwas rooted in her own experience, overallher comments went beyond what theguidelines allow for”.

The ECU found Munchetty’s assertionthat Mr Trump’s comments went beyondwhat the BBC allows. The corporationupheld a complaint made about thepresenter’s comments.

The law around organ donation inEngland is changing. From spring2020 all adults in England will beconsidered to have agreed to be anorgan or tissue donor when they die, unless they had recorded a decisionnot to donate or are in one of theexcluded groups.Under the plans detailed byministers, adults will be presumed tobe organ donors unless they havespecifically recorded their decisionnot to be.Heart, lungs, kidneys, pancreas, blood vessels and skin are on the listof organs and tissues which will beautomatically taken under the newsystem. In the UK in 2017, 411 people diedbefore the right donor was found, andmore than 5,000 people are currentlyon the waiting list in England. The government said it would alsoencourage people to discuss, withtheir families, the issue of whetherthey would want to be a donor in theevent of their death. The new system presumes thatover-18s in England are in favour ofdonating their organs when they die, instead of the current system wherepeople opt in by signing the NHSOrgan Donor Register.Under the new law, those who donot wish to donate their organs willstill be able to opt out via the registerand by using an NHS app thatlaunches at the end of the year. The register will also include anoption for people to state their faith, ifit is important to their decision.Currently, fewer than half offamilies give consent for their loved

one's organs to be donated if they areunaware of their wishes, and ministershope that the new system willencourage people to make theirwishes known before their death.Research shows 82% of peoplesupport organ donation, yet only 37%have recorded their wishes on theNHS Organ Donor Register.Under the new plans, specialistnurses will be on hand to discussdonation with families after a lovedone dies.Jackie Doyle-Price, Secretary ofState for Mental Health andInequalities, said the changes couldsave up to 700 lives everyyear, but she saidorgan donationremained a gift."I want toencourage peoplewho wish to give lifein the event of theirdeath to take the timeto record their wishesand discuss it with theirfamily," she said."However, we knowthis new system alone isnot a magic bullet."We need to addressmyths and misconceptionsaround donation, and we willonly do this by havinginformed debate and dialogue, which I hope will be fostered bythese proposals.”From 1st May 2019, anyone withaccess to the NHS App will also beable to use it to register theirdecision on the NHS Organ DonorRegister.

Opt-out organ donation ‘in place for 2020’Research shows 82% of people support organ donation, yet only 37% have recorded their wishes on the NHS Organ Donor Register.

People in Leeds are beingencouraged to check they and theirchildren have had two doses ofMMR (measles, mumps andrubella) vaccine followingconfirmed cases in children in thecity this month.Public Health England (PHE) has

reported an increase in measlesacross the country over the year andthe call comes as latest annualfigures show a national year-on-yeardecline in uptake of the MMRvaccine and other childhoodimmunisations. The percentage of children

vaccinated against measles, mumpsand rubella by their second birthdayin Leeds decreased from 95.3% in2012/13 to 92.9% in 2017/18 (latestpublished annual figures).PHE is working with Leeds City

Council and the NHS to make sureeveryone in Leeds is aware andtakes up the opportunity to bevaccinated to protect themselvesand others against the virus.Consultant in Health Protection

with Public Health England (PHE)Yorkshire and the Humber, HelenMcAuslane, said: “Those affected inLeeds are all recovering but it’simportant to be aware that measlescan be a very serious illness and leadto severe complications, especiallyin people who are particularlyvulnerable or have other healthconditions.”Measles is a highly infectious viral

illness, so anyone with symptoms isalso being advised to stay at homeand phone their GP or NHS 111 foradvice, rather than visiting thesurgery or A&E, to prevent theillness spreading further. Anyone atany age who hasn’t been vaccinatedcan get measles and the illness canbe more severe in teenagers andadults than in young children.Helen McAuslane added: “The

free MMR vaccine is a safe andeffective way of protecting againstmeasles, as well as mumps andrubella. It’s particularly importantfor parents to take up the offer ofMMR vaccination for their childrenwhen offered at one year of age andas a pre-school booster at threeyears, four months of age. “If children and young adults

have missed these vaccinations inthe past, it’s important to take upthe free vaccine now from GPs,particularly in light of the recentcases in Leeds. Check your child’sRed Book to see if they’ve receivedMMR vaccinations as scheduled, orcheck with your GP surgery ifyou’re unsure. Most healthy adultswill have developed some immunityto measles but can still receive twodoses of the vaccine from their GPtoo.“Measles is extremely infectious

to anyone who may not be immune. If you think you could have measles,it is really important to stay awayfrom areas where you could comeinto contact with lots of otherpeople – especially vulnerablepatients in hospitals, care homes orother settings, but also schools andnurseries for children.”

In the wake of research revealingthat the Asan community is morelikely to experience negativeoutcomes from mainstream mentalhealth services, health and wellbeingcharity CEO, Monica Shafaq, iscampaigning for change.Monica believes in order to create

a more inclusive mental healthservice in the UK, we need toactively promote services thatunderstand a multitude of cultures. The Ethnic Inequalities in Mental

Health report states that, in general, people from black and minorityethnic groups living in the UK are, more likely to be diagnosed withmental health problems; more likelyto be diagnosed and admitted tohospital; more likely to experience apoor outcome from treatment; morelikely to disengage from mainstreammental health services, leading tosocial exclusion and a deteriorationin their mental health. Monica said: “It is no secret that

mental health issues are a taboosubject within many BAMEcommunities, but the statistics arescandalous.“It is now time to rid the stigmas

associated with mental health withinour society. To help alleviate theworsening crisis, my charity, TheKaleidoscope Plus Group, will berolling out national communityengagement initiatives for specificBAME communities.”Monica Shafaq continued: “I am

part of a wonderful BAME

community in the Midlands, withmany growing up with the notionthat prayer was the answer to mentalhealth concerns, which, whilst faithhas a place, it cannot cure mentalillnesses.“I find that those from BAME

backgrounds can sometimes havedifferent views about mental healthconditions, for instance, some mightsee depression as a social or mysticcondition caused by non-biologicalinfluences, which means that theymay delay seeking professional help. “We’ve learned a lot about the

communities we serve and the issuesthat they face, and that’s why we’releading the charge when it comes totacking the challenges faced by theBAME community and mentalhealth care.”“The pressures on mental health

services are unprecedented, and ourbusy modern lives are definitely acontributing factor, but when youadd in cultural and religious beliefs, our mental health services areundoubtedly, and dare I say it,unwittingly, allowing people to fallthrough the net,” she adds.Monica has dedicated her career

Yorkshire’s disastrous socialcare workforce ‘BLACKHOLE’

Social care in Yorkshire has a'disastrous' staffing ‘black hole’with more than 4,000 vacant posts, new figures released by GMB, theunion for care workers, reveal. The figures, which were obtained

by the union from Skills for Care, show there are 4,500 carevacancies across the region, according to the latest estimates. The statistics emerge as GMB

today calls on TUC Congress, inBrighton, to support GMB’scampaign for sectoral bargaining, pay justice for care workers andproper funding for the care sectorSkills for Care estimates that the

vacancy rate for care workers is astaggering 9.1 per cent – more thanthree times the average for all jobs. The GMB, the All Party

Parliamentary Group for SocialCare has just released a ‘ground-breaking’ report recommending anew national care body forEngland with NHS affiliation, areformed and accredited CareCertificate with a gateway tocareer development and aprogramme for workforce training. Kelly Andrews, GMB National

Officer, said: "Years of neglect hasleft our care sector with adisastrous staffing black hole.“For years, care has been treated

as a Cinderella service – when inreality this is a highly-skilled, vitaljob that we all rely on.“It’s time that care workers are

recognised as the skilled workersthat they are – with decent wages, good training opportunities and aclear path to career progressions.“Without urgent action the

problem is going to get worse andworse until the whole system is atrisk of collapsing.”

The concept of a young carer isunfamiliar to many Asiancommunities as helping your familyand extended family is oftenexpected. But young Black, Asian and

Minority Ethnic children who carefor ill or disabled relatives aremissing out on their childhoodsbecause of the additionalresponsibilities and stresses theyhave to deal with. They are more likely than other

young carers to be isolated fromsupport services.Research conducted by

Barnardo’s, based on interviews withBAME young carers andpractitioners found that many youngsouth Asian carers were far toooften being relied upon asinterpreters. They are often relayingtechnical and deeply personalmedical information betweenpatients and doctors, which can leadto misdiagnosis and increasedanxiety within families.Often BAME families do not

want agencies involved as there is adeep mistrust of social services, orauthorities and they are fearful oftheir families being split up.Additionally, there is stigma withinmany BAME communities inacknowledging mental health anddisability issues and in seekingsupport. The Caring Alone report

highlights how young carers like 19-year-old Neha Lathia suddenly hadto care for both parents and her twosiblings, Priyanka and Dev, whilestudying for her A-levels. She said, “I have to translate at

most hospital appointments. There’snever been a translator at thehospital, so I have to be there to doit. And sometimes a word simplydoesn’t exist in Gujarati, so I have totry and find another word or explainsome other way.

“Everything changed for me whenmy parents got ill. I had a panic, thinking how is Dev going to get toschool? How are we going to pickhim up? How am I going to get tocollege on time? And how will Ihave enough time to do my

homework and revise?“I get myself and Dev up. Then we

come down and give mum and dadtheir medication, check they areokay and we get breakfast and Devready for school. “I walk Dev to school. I come

home then and make breakfast formum and dad and I look at any billsor other household things, then Iwash up or do any washing orcleaning and do the other choreslike shopping. If I have any time I tryand revise for a bit. I’d not heard ofbeing a young carer. That is what isexpected for Indian families.”Barnardo’s Chief Executive Javed

Khan said: “Many young carersalready have it tough, balancingcooking, cleaning, washing, shopping, and helping to look aftersiblings, alongside trying to keep upwith their school work. But youngcarers from some BAMEcommunities are even less likely toaccess support, due partly to thestigma attached to asking for help.“Young people are often proud of

their role in caring for familymembers. But as a society we mustprotect them from taking on toomuch responsibility at a young age,and from sacrificing their education,or physical and mental health. “It’s not right that BAME young

carers often have to interpretcomplicated medical information fora loved one, which can lead tomisdiagnosis and cause additionalstress. This group of vulnerablechildren are often “hidden”, andthere is an urgent need to breakdown barriers so they are not left tostruggle on their own.”Barnardo’s key recommendations

in the Caring Alone report include:that all patients who don’t speakEnglish should have access to atranslator. Children and youngpeople should never be expected totranslate for a relative.

n the recent case of Woodward vPhoenix Healthcare DistributionLimited the Court of Appeal had to

consider the issue of whether a solicitorhad a duty to point out a mistake by hisopponent in circumstances where notdoing so would be fatal to hisopponent’s case.In that case the Claimant had issued a

Claim Form on 19 June 2017 andpursuant to the Civil Procedure Rules(the court rules which govern civilclaims) the Claim Form had to be servedon the Defendant within four monthsi.e. by no later than 19 October 2017.The Claimant’s solicitors emailed andposted the Claim Form and Particularsof Claim to the Defendant’s solicitors on17 October 2017. However, as theDefendant’s solicitors had not notifiedthe Claimant’s solicitors that they wereauthorised to accept service on behalf ofits client, the Claim Form was notvalidly served as it had to be served onthe Defendant itself. The Defendant’ssolicitors were instructed by its clientnot to highlight this error and theytherefore waited until after the periodfor service had expired before pointingout to the Claimant’s solicitors thatservice was defective. The Claimant’s solicitors immediately

sought to serve the Defendant itself byway of courier, post and email eventhough it was too late. The Claimantsubsequently applied for retrospectivevalidation of service under the Court’sdiscretion on the grounds that theDefendant could have informed theClaimant of their solicitors’mistake so that theClaimant could haveserved theproceedings in time.At first instance,

the Master grantedthe application onthe basis of theDefendant’ssolicitors’ duty toassist the Court toachieve theOverridingObjective (a CivilProcedures Rulewhich states that theCourt must deal withcases justly and atproportionate costs)rather than engage in“technical gameplaying”. However, thisdecision was reversedupon appeal by the HighCourt where the Courtfound that there was norequirement for a solicitorwho had not contributed toan opponent’s mistake todraw attention to thatmistake. The Defendanttherefore appealed to the

Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeal dismissed the

appeal on the grounds that theDefendant’s solicitors were under noobligation to warn the Claimant of itserror. The Defendant’s solicitors had noduty to highlight the errors which theClaimant’s solicitors had maderegarding serving the Claim Form and, indeed, the Defendant’s solicitor hadbeen specifically instructed by its clientnot to do so.This decision reinforces the view that

there is no duty requiring a solicitor todraw attention to an opponent’s mistakealthough the decision may have beendifferent if the Defendant’s solicitorshad actively contributed to themisunderstanding or mistake of theiropponent. If you are involved in any commercial

American smashed beefburgers come to Bradford

DEDICATED: Asif Haider left his job as a pharmacist to open Bite in partnership with his sister Nazia Ali

Putting the BITE into the burger

new smashed beefburger joint has justopened near the

Leisure Exchange with asimple and exciting conceptfor Bradford.Owners Asif Haider, 26

and Nazia Ali, 34 are soconfident in their new fastfood concept that they’realready talking about settingup in high streets across thecountry. The Bradford-born

business duo spent almost ayear not just devising theconcept but experimentingto create a style and qualityof burger unique to Bradfordand the Yorkshire region.Their new burger joint,

which opened on 22ndAugust is all about thequality of the beef andspecialises only in beefburgers. Fries and hand-spun milkshakes are also onthe menu.“I first discovered a proper

good burger when I visitedDubai a few years ago – itwas the first time I’d tastedanything like it.“Burger restaurants like

‘Shake Shack’ and ‘FiveGuys’ inspired me toexperience a new level ofburger taste” said Asif.“I love my burgers, but

growing up in Yorkshire, Iwas used to the kind ofburgers you can findanywhere – made mostlyfrom frozen beef or readymade burger pattiessupplied by meatwholesalers.“They’re OK if that’s what

you want, but they’renothing like the ones I hadtasted abroad which takeburgers it to a whole new

level.“Bite burgers are based on

an American burger conceptcalled a ‘smashed’ burger.“You take a fresh beef

patty and literally smash itdown on a hot grill to createa crust on one side and areally delicious caramelisedflavour.“But it can only be done

properly with the rightquality of beef using specificcuts that are blended tocreate the perfect flavourand crust.” Asif recognised the

demand and gap for aproper smashed burger jointin Bradford and so movedhis focus away from workingas a fully qualified locumpharmacist to instead workon creating the perfectpackage for the newbusiness. Nazia said: “Although the

burger seems like a reallysimple thing, it’s actually avery complicated recipe. And it’s taken us about a yearto get it exactly right, goingto various specialist beefproviders. Even once we gotthe meet combo right, westill spent a couple ofmonths perfecting it evenmore, along with the correctcooking techniques.”Asif added: “Instead of

going to a butcher andasking him to supply theirown blends of beef, we did itall ourselves, we researchedand tested all the differentcuts of beef and made ourown unique blend. You can’tbuy this ready-made – we getthem made to our exactspecifications. It’s our ownsecret blend, delivered onlyto us.

“We only use fresh beef –never frozen. 100% Halaland HMC certified suppliers. It’s Aberdeen Angus, which isa breed that tends to havethe best flavour. It’s knownas prime beef as it’s reallyhigh quality cuts. It’s dry-aged for at least 21 days; thecows are also free-range andgrass fed, so those things allcombine to create theamazing flavour we get.“Our burgers are made

with different cuts of the cowand for ours we’ve chosenthree specific cuts for whatwe think gives the bestflavour and we decidedexactly what ratio of fat tolean meat we required. Ittook a lot of experimentingto get it right – the quantityof which beef cut to whichpercentage of fat and so on.”“The first thing we want to

do is get the name out thereand then build the brand,”said Asif. We want to keep it simple

for potential futurefranchising as well.“We’d like to open another

branch within a year and thedream is to be on every highstreet. “We want to be knownas the place people think offirst for a proper burger – areally good burger joint, withconsistent high quality andservice.“We’re not about gourmet

food – we serve deliciousand high quality fast food. Not too fancy andreasonably priced. “We wantour burger to speak it foritself. The tastiest, mostmemorable burgers ourcustomers have ever had.Our strapline is ‘Burgers youcan taste with every BITE’.”

Boris Johnson:“Supreme Court was wrong to

block suspension of Parliament”Boris Johnson has hit out at

the Supreme Court forintervening in a political matterat a time of “great nationalcontroversy” over Brexit.

The Prime Minister was forcedto cut short a trip to the UnitedNations in New York to addressMPs after the court ruled that hissuspension of Parliament wasunlawful.

Mr Johnson accusedParliament of being “paralysed”and claimed its members were“sabotaging” Brexit negotiationsby seeking to thwart hiscommitment to taking the UKout of the European Union onOctober 31, with or without adeal.

And he dared oppositionparties to table a motion of noconfidence or back a generalelection in order to “finally facethe day of reckoning with thevoters”.

Mr Johnson was humiliated byTuesday’s Supreme Courtjudgment which overturned hisadvice to the Queen to suspendParliament until October 14.

The Prime Minister said it was“absolutely no disrespect to thejudiciary to say I thought thecourt was wrong” to pronounce

on a “political question at a timeof great national controversy”.

Claiming that MPs were tryingto prevent Brexit entirely, hesaid: “The people at home knowthat this Parliament will keepdelaying, it will keep sabotagingthe negotiations because theydon’t want a deal.”

In response, Labour leaderJeremy Corbyn repeated his callfor the Prime Minister to quit.

“After yesterday’s ruling thePrime Minister should havedone the honourable thing andresigned,” he said.

“Out of sheer selfishness and political cowardicethey are unwilling to move aside and let the peoplehave a say.“The Leader of the Opposition and his party don’t

trust the people.“All that matters to them is an obsessive desire to

overturn the referendum result.”He added: “I wonder does he in his heart even want

to be prime minister any more?”Throwing down the gauntlet to the opposition

parties, he said: “This Parliament must either standaside and let this Government get Brexit done orbring a vote of confidence and finally face the day ofreckoning with the voters.”The Labour leader dismissed the “bluster from a

dangerous Prime Minister who thinks he is above thelaw”, adding: “In truth, he is not fit for the office thathe holds.”Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the

SNP would back an election if Mr Johnson requesteda Brexit delay.“The ball’s in his court,” she said.“But he must think we button up the back if he

believes we’ll let him force through a no-deal Brexit.”In an interview with ITV, Mr Johnson said he

would both “respect the law” and leave the EU onOctober 31 – but refused to say how.Mr Johnson did not apologise for the suspension of

Parliament, which was ordered by the Queen on hisadvice. The row dragged the monarch into Westminster’s

bitter Brexit battle, but senior Cabinet ministerMichael Gove said: “I don’t think that theGovernment should apologise for having a strongdomestic agenda, I don’t think we should apologisealso for seeking to advance our exit from theEuropean Union.“I don’t think the Government should apologise

also for saying that we are attempting to honour thedemocratic will of the British people.”Attorney General Geoffrey Cox also faced

questions about his legal advice which indicated thefive-week suspension – known as prorogation –would be within the law.Mr Cox told MPs he will consider whether the

public interest might require a “greater disclosure” ofadvice given to the Government on the prorogation. But he railed against the “dead Parliament”

claiming MPs had no “moral right” to remain in theCommons, try to “block 17.4 million people’s votes”and refuse to allow an election. The response to the court case – including reported

comments by Commons Leader Jacob Rees-Moggdescribing it as a “constitutional coup” – have causedunease about the Government’s attitude to thejudiciary.Mr Cox – speaking in the Commons with Mr Rees-

Mogg watching on – said: “I don’t think it was aconstitutional coup”, but “these things can be said inthe heat of rhetorical and poetical licence”.Justice Secretary Robert Buckland defended the

independence of “our world-class judiciary”.

A Met Police officer who downloadedporn on a grieving father's TV while hewaited for an undertaker to collect his 14-year-old son’s body has been jailed.Avi Maharaj, 44, was called to Graham

and Allison Miller's house in Earlsfield, south west London, on 11th February lastyear after their 14-year-old son Harrytook his own life. While he waited for his body to be

taken, he guessed the family's VirginMedia pin number and managed to maketwo purchases of pornography totalling£25.96. The court heard Mr Miller thought his

dead son had downloaded the videosbefore he found out what happened. He was sentenced to 12 months in

prison at Southwark Crown Court afterpleading guilty to fraud. Judge Deborah Taylor, sentencing, said:

“On 11th February 2018, as a policeconstable with the Metropolitan Police, you were on duty at the family home of a14-year-old boy who had tragicallybrought about his own death.“While his grieving parents were being

consoled elsewhere, you had theresponsibility of guarding the house lateat night until the arrival of the undertakerto remove the body.“Instead of performing that duty with

respect and professionalism, you took itupon yourself to guess the password tothe household Virgin Media account, toact as if you were the account holder, and

use it to purchase, download and viewfour pornography films.“The family were vulnerable,

traumatised by the loss of their son, andtrusted you to guard their house.“Your actions led them to a false

understanding of their son's last hoursand greatly exacerbated their grief andsuffering."It is impossible to overstate the

affront of your behaviour that night, in ahouse where the tragic death of a youngboy had occurred, and in the presence ofhis body.“All right-thinking people would be

appalled by your gross lack of decencyand respect in indulging yourself at all inthose circumstances, let alone deviously, and at the expense of the bereavedparents.”The matter was referred to the

Independent Office for Police Conduct, but Maharaj initially denied being theone who downloaded the material andclaimed he had already left the house.“The father of the deceased believed

his son had been downloading thismaterial, so he was very distressed,' saidMs Edwin.“His last impression of his son was that

he was downloading this material butthen he subsequently discovered itwasn’t."Gregor McKinley, prosecuting said:

“The only person at the premises was MrMaharaj.

“Four adult films had beendownloaded between 11pm and 11.42pm.“During this time period the only other

people attending the address were thetwo assistants from the undertaker's firm.“They were at the address from

11.05pm to 11.15pm."As part of his duty that evening Mr

Maharaj was the continuous completionof the police crime scene it's notable thathe incorrectly logged the arrival of theundertakers as 32 minutes later than itdid.“More importantly he incorrectly

recorded when he left the premises.“The Crown say that was a deliberate

attempt to cover up what he was doing atthe address namely downloadingpornographic material.”Maharaj pleaded guilty and the case

was sent to Crown Court for sentencing. Speaking when Maharaj was convicted

last month, Independent Office for PoliceConduct regional director Sal Naseemsaid: “Pc Maharaj's behaviour wasshocking and even more so given he wasguarding the property in the absence ofthe homeowner.“Not only were his actions deceitful but

he caused considerable distress for thefamily involved who were dealing withthe sudden death of a family member.“I am sorry that the family involved

had to deal with this while also copingwith the tragic loss of their child.”

YEMEN: Record numbersof refugees and migrantsarrive amidst intensifyingand complicated war

Despite the ongoing war andescalating humanitarian crisis inYemen, this year has seen a spikein the number of arrivals of EastAfrican refugees and migrants toYemen. The International Organisation

for Migration (IOM) – a leadinginter-governmental body, estimates that 18,320 refugees andmigrants arrived in April 2019 and18,904 people arrived in May 2019– representing the highest monthlyarrivals figures since data becameavailable in 2006.In total, 84,378 East Africans are

estimated to have arrived in thefirst six months of 2019.This route is already the largest

mixed migration route out of EastAfrica. If trends continue, arrivalsfor 2019 could exceed the record159,838 refugees and migrantsestimated to have arrived inYemen in 2018.Many of these refugees and

migrants intend to transit throughYemen on route to Saudi Arabiaand other Gulf countries.Ethiopians make up 90% of the

arrivals into Yemen while Somalisaccount for around 10% ofarrivals in 2019.The mixed migration flow to

Yemen is largely made up ofyoung men, however nearly 20%are women and around 10% arechildren.High unemployment rates and

political insecurity are major

drivers for Ethiopians and Somalisto the Gulf, where they hope tofind employment, betteropportunities, and security. However, migrants and refugees

traveling along this route faceviolations of their human rights atevery stage of the journey, with ahigh risk of being trafficked, kidnapped, or dying at sea on oneof the busiest maritime mixedmigration routes in the world. In addition, the fragile political

situation in Yemen has opened upnew avenues for smugglingoperations and may lure refugeesand migrants to travel with theperception of ease of movementthrough Yemen. In reality, the deteriorating

situation in Yemen has creatednew loopholes for strongtrafficking networks and newopportunities to exploit refugeesand migrants along this route.Migrants also feel the impact of

the deepening crisis in Yemen andare often impacted by the conflictand insecurity. Since 2017,Yemen’s port city of Aden hasemerged as a detention hub forEthiopian and Somali migrantsand refugees. In early May 2019, around 5,000

people were known to have beendetained during a peak period indetention in unsustainableconditions, including in a stadium.

The takeover of AdenIt is unclear how the takeover of

Aden in mid-August 2019 bySouthern Yemen separatist forces –framed as a civil war within a civilwar – will impact on migrants andrefugees stranded there, or on futurereturns. As active fighting continues in the

intensifying and complicated war inYemen, concerns are being raisedfor refugees and migrants travelingthrough Yemen and thousands ofEast African migrants and refugeeswho remain stranded or detained inareas around Aden.Serious protection risks at every

stage of the journeyEvery year, tens of thousands of

Ethiopians and Somalis travelthrough harsh terrain in Djiboutiand Puntland to reach departureareas along the coastline where theycan find boats to take them toYemen.

From there, they embark on adangerous boat journey through theRed or Arabian seas to reach pointsalong Yemen’s coast.Although 274 deaths were

recorded on the sea journey toYemen in 2018, far more migrantsare likely dying on this route everyyear. However, it’s when migrantsand refugees arrive in Yemen that

some of the most serious protectionrisks can occur.Arbitrary and abusive detention,

trafficking and other protectionrisks are increasingly prevalent formigrants and refugees arriving inYemen.Reports from Human Rights

Watch and other groups also showincreasing threats to migrants bytrafficking and smuggling groups, lack of basic access to food, water, and medical services, and high risksof sexual violence and abuse forwomen.Migrants and refugees have been

rounded up in camps in Yemenpending deportation, with reports

that people have died in thesecamps. There are particular concernsfor unaccompanied and separatedchildren who may be morevulnerable to abuse as well asreports that armed groups areforcibly recruiting migrants to fight.Migrants and refugees who make

it to the Saudi border face morechallenges, including dangerous anddeadly border crossings, harshdetentions, and exploitation asundocumented or irregular workers.Further, in March 2017, Saudi

authorities announced a crackdownon undocumented migrants, andIOM estimates that 300,000Ethiopians had been deported backto Ethiopia by July 2019.Those who return report extreme

abuses in long periods of detentionbefore they are deported. The SaudiArabian government also recentlymoved to revoke visas for Ethiopianhousemaids and cancel all workvisas already issued for Ethiopians. However, these moves don’t seem

to deter migration on this route –estimates show that migration fromthe Horn of Africa to Yemen hasremained close to or over 100,000people per year since the Saudi

deportations began in 2017, withrecord numbers arriving in the lastfew months.

What next? How the ongoing conflict in

Yemen will impact future mixedmigration through the countryremains to be fully understood. The influx of people over the last

few months indicates that mixedmigration from East Africa toYemen (and onwards to Saudi

Arabia and other Gulf countries)will continue even if the warintensifies.Despite the risks, the potential

opportunities for a better life pushpeople to embark on this route, nowmore than ever. Further, morerestrictions on legal options forwork could actually increase mixedmigration along this route, as recenttrends suggest.Over the next year, challenging

political situations and largepopulations of internally displacedpeople in Ethiopia and Somaliacould further stress limited servicesand economic opportunities athome, pushing more people to leavein search of jobs and security. With a lack of viable legal options,

many migrants and refugees set onfinding work in Saudi Arabia andother Gulf countries will find other

and often unsafe routes to travel. The deteriorating situation in

Yemen will continue to createdangerous situations for migrantsand refugees, however travelingthrough Yemen to reach SaudiArabia will likely remain adominant route in the months andyears to come.

English language test scammershave sentences increasedTwo men who helped

more than 1,000 UK visaapplicants to fraudulentlypass English languagetests will be jailed forlonger after SolicitorGeneral Michael Ellis QCMP referred their sentencesto the Court of Appeal.Muhammad Bilal, 36,

Mehboob Jilani, 33, and 3other men ran 3 colleges inManchester where non-EEAnationals could take anEnglish language test toprove their proficiency whenmaking UK visa applications. In these colleges,

candidates would turn up tohave their photograph takenfor identification purposes, but Bilal and Jilani wouldhave arranged for an English-speaker to take the test forthem. On average,

candidates were charged£500 to take part in thisscheme, and at least 1,134tests were considered invalidas a result of cheating atthese colleges.Bilal and Jilani were

originally sentenced forconspiracy to defraud to 2and 4 years’ imprisonmentrespectively at Burnley CrownCourt in June 2019 in a caseled by ImmigrationEnforcement Criminal andFinancial Investigations.Today, the Court of Appealincreased Bilal’s sentence to4 years’ imprisonment andJilani’s to 6 years. They werealso disqualified from beingcompany directors for 4 and5 years respectively.Commenting on the

increase, the SolicitorGeneral said: “English

language requirements helpto promote integration, remove cultural barriers andprotect public services. Bilaland Jilani helped hundreds ofpeople to flaunt theserequirements, justifying moresignificant custodialsentences.”Anthony Hilton, from

Immigration EnforcementCriminal and FinancialInvestigations, said: “Thisruling recognises theseriousness of the offencesand sends a strong deterrentmessage to those whoattempt to commitimmigration crimes.“In committing these

crimes, Bilal and Jilani wereenabling individuals to cheattheir way to a qualification –and potentially a visa – towhich they were not entitled.”

Two men convicted of offences linked totheir involvement in an organised criminalnetwork have been jailed. Both men, who are from east London, were linked to the network which was sellingstolen mobile phones and laundering theproceeds.Niaz Mohammad, 29, was found guilty ofconspiracy to receive stolen goods, acquiringcriminal property, and concealing, disguising, converting, trans-ferring, removing from theUK criminal property.Afiqur Chowdhury, 29, was found guilty ofconspiracy to receive stolen goods, converting criminal property (moneylaundering) and possession of criminalproperty. Both men were convicted at BlackfriarsCrown Court following a trial, and sentencedat the same court to five years’ imprisonmenton Wednesday, 28th August. The convictions follow an investigation byofficers from Operation Venice, the Metteam dedicated to reducing moped-enabledcrime in London. On 7th April 2018, a suspect on a mopedcommitted a mobile phone snatch theft inSpringfield Road, NW8.Unbeknownst to the suspect, the victimquickly enabled an anti-theft app he hadinstalled on this phone, enabling him toremotely track it, take photos and makeaudio recordings.During the trial, jurors heard several audioclips which capture Mohammad bargainingfor a package of 16 stolen mobile phones. The victim also used the app to takeimages of mobile phones suspected to bestolen inside a bag, an image of Mohammaddismantling the phones, and a photo ofMohammad as he was removing the sim cardfrom the victims’ stolen phone. This materialformed a crucial part of the evidence in thecase. On 12th September 2018, warrants wereexecuted at four addresses includingMohammad’s home, family address, privatebusiness and a cargo shipping retailer. At hisbusiness address, officers discovered

notebooks containing details of hundreds ofmobile phones and prices. At the cargo shipping premises, recordswere obtained showing that over a period ofyears, Mohammad had shipped thousands ofmobile phones, laptops and computers. Theentire criminal network was conservativelyestimated to be worth more than £1million.The investigation led officers toChowdhury who was part of the organisedcriminal network which handled stolenphones and other equipment, and launderedthe funds generated from sale.Chowdhury’s bank accounts wereanalysed. This showed that between 2012 and2018, he received £410,223.42 in cash andother credits, despite his declared grossincome being approximately £8,000 duringthat period and there being no record of himbeing employed.A warrant was executed at Chowdhury’saddress where he was arrested. During thesearch a similar notebook containing phoneswith prices was found, and alongside this anumber of stolen phones and other itemslater confirmed to have been stolen werefound in his property.Detective Inspector Steven Brownlee, ofthe Operation Venice investigation team, said: “Mohammad and Chowdhury sought toprofit financially from the loss of others byhandling and selling on what they knew to bestolen phones, many of which would havebeen obtained as a result of robberies andthefts. Their illegal business would havecreated a demand for stolen phones, whichwould have in turn contributed to morecrime and facilitated others profiting from it.“The investigation showed that they werethe main players in a handling ring thatgenerated hundreds of thousands of poundsin criminal revenue. The jail sentences theyhave received reflect the severity of theiroffending.“Operation Venice officers are workingday in, day out to tackle moped-enabledcrime and catch offenders. In this case, ourinvestigation took us beyond those stealingthe phones.”

Buying a new mattress?Quick bed buying tips

• Do your research before you step inside theshop. Think about what yourpriorities/concerns are. Is it price, storage, access to the bedroom, mattress type orhealth issue? Make sure your retailerunderstands your needs.• It's always a good idea to buy a mattress andbase together as they are designed to work inharmony. However, if you only want toreplace your mattress, make sure youmeasure your base first as bed sizes are notstandardised, even if they have the samename (e.g. king size). Speak to your retailer tofind out if the mattress suits the base. Also, beaware that your guarantee may be invalidwhen putting a new mattress on an old base.• Try it! It may sound obvious but get on thebed and see how it feels. Don't be afraid tospend at least 10 minutes lying on the bed inyour normal sleeping position. If you'll besharing the bed, make sure you take yourpartner with you and try it out together.• Ask how to look after the mattress. Theretailer should be able to provide you withcare instructions for the bed. For example, this will include details of how often youneed to turn or rotate the mattress. If you liveon your own, you may want a ‘no-turn'mattress.• While most beds sold in the UK are ‘asdescribed', not every manufacturer or retaileris honest, and some do sell beds withinaccurate descriptions of fillings, or evenworse - second hand mattresses with a newcover. One way to be sure that what you arebuying is safe, clean and as described is tolook out for the ‘NBF Approved' label. NBFmembers are independently audited toensure they comply with flammability, hygiene and trade descriptions regulations.• For partners of widely different size orweight (three stones or more), differentmattresses might be a good option. Somemanufacturers make double beds from twosingle mattresses zipped together orcombine different degrees of firmness in amattress.

A new app is tapping into the “gigeconomy” to empower members of the publicto report parking infringements to their localcouncils, helping to ease traffic congestionand prevent the blocking of pavements. The eFine app uses proprietary code and

patent pending technology to effectively turna mobile phone into a CCTV camera, formingpart of a distributed CCTV network. Whenyou spot a parking infringement, you start theapp, video it, and eFine takes care of the rest. The app user receives 25% of the

infringement notice when it is paid to thecouncil – meaning that as well as helping keeptraffic flowing and the roads safe, they getrewarded for their efforts. The eFine app was developed by brother

and sister team Alex Mühlhölzl (COO) andLisa Mühlhölzl (CEO) following Lisa’sexperiences travelling to and from work inLondon.“I regularly got caught in a bus while traffic

went from two way to one way due to aninconsiderately parked car on a narrowstreet,” says Lisa. “When we first floated the idea to friends

and coders looking to put a demo together,we got told stories of their friends inwheelchairs or pushing buggies and theimpact cars on footpaths had on them, theirsafety and general accessibility and mobility. “This is basically an app to let local

residents take back their streets.”The app lets a user know if they are in a

partner council area before they record theinfringement with the data being unaccessibleby the user and is not stored on the user’sphone either. The video is sent and stored on an Azure

system, meaning only the council associatedwith the infringement notice can see thevideo and decide if a fine should be issued. While the app is aimed at anyone who

spots parking infringements, Alex and Lisaanticipate that it will be especially appealingto the elderly, the disabled and/or people withyoung children. The expectation is that the app will

contribute much needed revenue for localcouncils, which can be put back intoimprovements to local roads and footpaths –many of which have suffered from neglectdue to reductions in allocated funding.“It addresses the need for better

management of traffic flow, vehicle andpedestrian, without the huge costs that areincurred by councils having to hireenforcement staff or outsource the service,”says Alex.“We have a focus on traffic flow

management, cars and pedestrians, and alsopedestrian safety, and as such we are lookingto prepare a template for councils that arelooking to introduce pedestrian zones aroundschools without the financial burden ofinstalling CCTV networks.“We are also looking to support councils

who are looking at the initiative of fininghouseholds for leaving rubbish or bins out fordays or weeks. This rubbish is often scavengedby animals and creates an environmentalproblem and bins on the footpaths createpedestrian traffic issues for the disabled andthose pushing buggies or trolleys and thoseon scooters.”The app will launch end of September and

is compatible with smart phones and tabletswith internet access. Alex and Lisa expect itto transform enforcement infrastructure inthe UK, making people less likely to park inways that are anti-social and potentiallydangerous.“The fact that anyone could be a parking

inspector thanks to this app, means thatpeople will think twice about parking illegallyand if not, the chance of them gettingpenalised for inconveniencing others hasincreased significantly,” says Alex.

2020 BMW 8-series Gran CoupeJust like the other Gran Coupe

models of past and present, the 8Series Gran Coupe is a four-doorversion of the 8 Series coupe it isbased on. It’s just as sleek as the two-door, but it’s longer and morepractical thanks to an additional pairof doors and more room forpassenger. It doesn’t take more than a

glimpse to notice that Gran Coupeis virtually identical to the regular 8Series in the front. It has the samemassive and sleek grille, slenderheadlamps with optional Laserlighttechnology, a sporty front splitter, and large air intakes in the bumper. The Gran Coupe’s profile is

heavily based on the concept carshowcaesd earlier in 2019. From the nose to the B-pillars, the

Gran Coupe is again identical to thestandard 8 Series. It’s the sectionfrom the B-pillars to the deck lid

that sets this car apart. There’s a longer wheelbase, rear

doors, and a reshaped roof. The frontsection of the roof is a bit taller thatcoupe’s, while the front doors areshorter. This is far from unusual, astwo-door coupes usually have longerdoors than their four-door sedancounterparts. The rear windows are obviously

larger now and their design is not assleek as the coupe’s, which featuressmaller quarter windows. The roofline retains a coupe-style shapetoward the rear, so the 8 Series GranCoupe is not as boxy as the 7 Series.BMW also managed to keep the sizeand shape of the deck lid in place. It’s good to have a solid deck lidagainst a legend like the Mercedes-Benz CLS.Not surprisingly, the rear section

looks identical to the standard 8Series. There’s a big spoiler integrated

into the trunk lid, slim, two-piece

taillights, vertical bumper vents tothe sides, and a sporty diffuser withbig exhaust pipes. Size-wise, the Gran Coupe is

obviously bigger than the two-door8 Series. At 200 inches long, theGran Coupe is almost 10 incheslonger than the two-door version.Eight of these 10 extra inches go intothe sedan’s wheelbase, which comesin at 119 inches. The Gran Coupe isalso 1.2 inches wider and sits 2.2

inches taller compared to the coupe.Compared to its spiritual

predecessor, the 6 Series GranCoupe, the 8 Series Gran Coupe isonly marginally bigger. Specifically,it’s almost three inches longer and1.5 inches wider. However, the 8Series Gran Coupe is smaller thanthe 7 Series. The latter is 0.7 incheslonger in regular trim and 6.2 incheslonger in LWB spec. The Gran Coupe is offered in both

840i and M850i xDrive guise, withthe former being powered by a 335-horsepower 3.0-litre inline six andthe latter a 523-hp twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. It’s all-wheel drive M850i coupe

blasted to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds in arecent test drive, but official BMWestimates a zero-to-60-mph time of4.9-seconds for the rear-wheel drive840i model and 4.6 seconds with all-wheel drive.

Sikh maninitiated Britain’sfirst universitysports hijab forMuslim women

In an applaudable move, BrunelUniversity was the first to roll out asports hijab for its Muslimsportswomen, and it all began thanks toit’s union president Ranjeet Rathore.

Brunel University, which is only oneof four in the UK to offer a free sportsprogramme, spotted a gap in thenumber of women taking part – and inparticular those wearing hijabs.

It’s hoped the move will help bolstertraditionally-low sports participationamongst hijabi students.

“We noticed that there was a gap infemale sports participation,” saidRanjeet Rathore, President of theUnion of Brunel Students, who hasdriven the hijab’s introduction.

“When we narrowed it down, wefound the main gap to be in BAMEfemale sports participation –specifically, we found there to be abarrier to Muslim women taking partin team sport.

“Of course, they were participatingin sports on their own and in private, but they weren’t really going out tocompetitions, or using sport as a socialtool to get involved in activities.”

Rathore said the hijab – whichcovers the wearer’s hair and neck, butleaves the face exposed – is made of

materials specifically designed forkeeping the wearer cool, whilstrespecting their religious beliefs.Traditionally, the hijab is made fromcotton, and as a result can quicklybecome hot, sodden with sweat anduncomfortable when used for sport.

A 2017 study by Sports Englandreported that just 18% of Muslimwomen participate in regular sport, against 30% of the UK’s femalepopulation as a whole.

“The new hijab is made of reallylight, high-quality material which islight on the head, and contains smallpores which allows the skin to breathemore easily,” said Rathore.

Initially the hijab will be available intwo sizes and come in ‘Brunel Blue,’although there are hopes to introduce abroader range of colours in the future. It’ll initially cost £15, which is 40%cheaper than the sports hijab launchedby Nike in late-2017.

Amongst those who will be wearingthe new sports hijab is Faith Al Saad, abusiness management student atBrunel who says she’s ‘one-hundredpercent confident’ that sport hijabs willencourage more of her peers into sport.

ENCOURAGED: Business management student Faith Al Saad is'one hundred percent' sure the hijabs will help encourage moreMuslim women into sport

“It’s great. Really lightweight, really easy to wear, really comfortable – it feels like you’re wearingnothing on your head, which is amazing, especiallywhen doing sports,” said Faith, a keen gym-goer.

“The traditional hijab is basically a cloth you wraparound your head and then pin down. You can’t reallyrun in it, it’ll literally fly off. The pins come out and itfalls off – it’s not comfortable.

“Especially in sports, you run, you sweat, you fall –the traditional hijab gets in the way. Wearing the sportshijab makes it ten-times easier, and I genuinely thinkit’s a lifesaver.”

Initially the hijab will be available in two sizes andcome in ‘Brunel Blue’

The Union of Brunel students now hopes that otheruniversities will follow its lead and introduce theirown sports hijab to further encourage greaterparticipation.

Rathore said: “There are now other unis that wantto partner with us, who want to take samples off us,who want to do their own hijab – which is great news.”
