CLIMATE CHANGEFederal Policy Approaches, Perspectives & Adaptation EffortsKonstantin Paerson (Editor)

This book describes four strategies for setting climate change policies: (1) research and wait-and-see, (2) science-based goal setting, (3) economics-based policies, and (4) incrementalism oradaptive management. Each may take into account the concerns, values, and scepticisms ofsome constituencies, but each also has limitations. It is unclear whether any single conceptualapproach could cover all elements of the policy debate, though hybrid approaches may help tobuild political consensus over whether and how much policy intervention is appropriate.

ENERGY POLICIES, POLITICS & PRICES SERIES

BUSINESS CASE SCENARIOS FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCYSelect Equipment & Appliance Sectors in the U.S., China & IndiaSean C. Byrne (Editor)

This book seeks to provide policy-makers and other stakeholders with actionable informationtowards a road map for reducing energy consumption cost-effectively. A focus on individualend use equipment types (hereafter referred to as appliance groups) that might be the subjectof policies - such as labels, energy performance standards, and incentives - to affect markettransformation in the short term, and on high-efficiency technology options that are availabletoday is examined. There is a strong, profit-based business case for investing in more energy-efficient products and designs. Energy efficiency, however, often is viewed as something thatbusinesses and individuals “should” do as good citizens. The reality is that using energyinefficiently is like walking past money on the ground -- money that could be put to far betteruse than paying electricity bills. Investing in energy efficiency therefore creates economic value. This book provides an overview of business case scenarios for energy efficiency in the UnitedStates, China and India.

DEMAND RESPONSEElectricity Market Benefits & Energy Efficiency CoordinationJoshua O'Neill (Editor)

Most electricity customers see electricity rates that are based on average electricity costs andbear little relation to the true production costs of electricity as they vary over time. Demandresponse is a tariff or program established to motivate changes in electric use by end-usecustomers in response to changes in the price of electricity over time, or to give incentivepayments designed to induce lower electricity use at times of high market prices or when gridreliability is jeopardised. Price-based demand response such as real-time pricing (RTP), critical-peak pricing (CPP) and time-of-use (TOU) tariffs, give customers time-varying rates that reflectthe value and cost of electricity in different time periods. Armed with this information, customers tend to use less electricity at times when electricity prices are high. Incentive-baseddemand response programs pay participating customers to reduce their loads at timesrequested by the program sponsor, triggered either by a grid reliability problem or highelectricity prices. Limited demand response capability exists in the U.S. today. Total demandresponse and load management capability has fallen by about one-third since 1996 due todiminished utility support and investment. States should consider aggressive implementation ofprice-based demand response for retail customers as a high priority. This book examines theelectricity market benefits and energy efficiency co-ordination corresponding to demandresponse service.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY FINANCING PROGRAMSRationales, Options & LimitsLouise Altman (Editor)

Many state policymakers and utility regulators have established aggressive energy efficiency(EE) savings targets which will necessitate investing billions of dollars in existing buildings. Taxpayer and utility bill payer funding is a small fraction of the total investment needed. Given thischallenge, some EE program administrators are exploring ways to increase their reliance onfinancing with the aim of amplifying the impact of limited program monies. This book exploresthe rationales and design options for energy efficiency financing programs; discusses increasingMiddle America's access to capital for energy improvements; and provides insight on the limitsof financing for energy efficiency.

ENERGY TAXESPolicy Perspective & Issues for ConsiderationNathan Videt (Editor)

By providing a longitudinal perspective on energy tax policy and expenditures, this bookexamines how current revenue losses resulting from energy tax provisions compare tohistorical losses and provides a foundation for understanding how current energy tax policyevolved. Further, this book compares the relative value of tax incentives given to fossil fuels, renewables, and energy efficiency. Recent legislation has introduced, reintroduced, expanded, and extended a number of energy tax provisions. While a number of the current energyprovisions have a long historical standing in the tax code, a wider variety of tax incentives, topromote a range of energy sources, are presently available than have been available in thepast.

REDUCED ENERGY USE THROUGH DEMAND RESPONSESelect Experiences from the U.S. & AbroadPeter N. Ryan (Editor)

Demand response (DR) is a load management tool which provides a cost-effective alternativeto traditional supply-side solutions to address the growing demand during times of peakelectrical load. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), demand response reflects“changes in electric usage by end-use customers from their normal consumption patterns inresponse to changes in the price of electricity over time, or to incentive payments designed toinduce lower electricity use at times of high wholesale market prices or when system reliabilityis jeopardised". The California Energy Commission (CEC) defines DR as “a reduction incustomers’ electricity consumption over a given time interval relative to what would otherwiseoccur in response to a price signal, other financial incentives, or a reliability signal.” This latterdefinition is perhaps most reflective of how DR is understood and implemented today incountries such as the U.S., Canada, and Australia where DR is primarily a dispatchable resourceresponding to signals from utilities, grid operators, and/or load aggregators (or DR providers). This book examines select experiences from the U.S. and abroad corresponding to reducedenergy usage through demand response.

CARBON CAPTURE & SEQUESTRATIONDevelopment Efforts & OutlookAnderson Carter Mitchell, Ross Freeman (Editors)

Carbon capture and sequestration (or storage), known as CCS, has attracted congressionalinterest as a measure for mitigating global climate change because large amounts of carbondioxide (CO2) emitted from fossil fuel use in the United States are potentially available to becaptured and stored underground and prevented from reaching the atmosphere. Large, industrial sources of CO2, such as electricity-generating plants, are likely candidates for CCSbecause they are predominantly stationary, single-point sources. Electricity generationcontributes over 40% of U.S. CO2 emissions from fossil fuels. Currently, U.S. power plants donot capture large volumes of CO2 for CCS. This book provides an overview of what CCS is, howit is supposed to work, why it has gained the interest and support of some members ofCongress, and what some of the challenges are to its implementation and deployment acrossthe United States.

HYDRAULIC FRACTURINGLegal Issues & Relevant LawsAdam R. Murphy (Editor)

Hydraulic fracturing is a technique used to recover oil and natural gas from underground lowpermeability rock formations. Hydraulic fracturing involves pumping fluids (primarily water anda small portion of chemicals, along with sand or other proppant) under high pressure into rockformations to crack them and allow the resources inside to flow to a production well. Thetechnique has been the subject of controversy because of the potential effects that hydraulicfracturing and related oil and gas production activities may have on the environment andhealth. This book focuses on selected legal issues related to the use of hydraulic fracturing. Itexamines some of the requirements for hydraulic fracturing contained in major federalenvironmental laws and also provides an overview of issues involving state pre-emption of localzoning authority, as well as state law.

ENVIRONMENTALISMEnvironmental Strategies & Environmental SustainabilityElias Kahraman, Ahmed Baig (Editors)

Environmentalism is a broad philosophy and social movement centered on a concern for theconservation and improvement of the environment. This book puts forward some keystrategies for promoting Cleaner Production in China, for instance, integrating CP intosustainability strategies, technology innovations and industrial ecology. Furthermore, theauthors examine the Energy Masting Planning, a comprehensive plan that addresses energysupply and consumption through 2020. The plan includes energy efficiency, renewable energyand infrastructure and land use policies and emphasises both the benefits and the limits of theapproach. Furthermore, removal of toxic and heavy metal contaminants from aqueousenvironments is one of the most important environmental issues to face the world. In thisbook, aerobic degradation through bioaccumulation by bacteria and microalgae and enzyme-catalysed reduction-based remediation of toxicants from waste waters are discussed. Otherchapters in this book examine the attitudes of university students towards the environmentand environmental problems, the influence on the causes of forest decline and an analysis ofspecific factors that influence the nominal median price of single-family homes across states, with a particular emphasis placed on the capitalisation of environmental factors such asenvironmental pollution in the form of toxic chemical releases.

OIL SPILL GOVERNANCE & PROPOSALS AFTER DEEPWATER HORIZONKody E. Powell, Landon D. Webb (Editors)

The impacts of an oil spill depend on the size of the spill, the rate of the spill, the type of oilspilled, and the location of the spill. Depending on timing and location, even a relatively minorspill can cause significant harm to individual organisms and entire populations. Oil spills cancause impacts over a range of time scales, from days to years, or even decades for certain spills. On 20 April 2010, an explosion occurred at the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform in the Gulfof Mexico, resulting in 11 fatalities. The incident led to approximately 206 million gallons of oilreleased, before it was contained on 15 July. The 2010 Gulf oil spill generated considerableinterest in oil spill governance issues. This book provides background information regarding oilspills in the U.S. coastal waters and identifies the legal authorities governing oil spill prevention, response, and clean-up.

CARBON CYCLE SCIENCEResearch Priorities & Congressional ConsiderationsGabriel Gonzales (Editor)

Understanding the Earth's carbon cycle is an urgent societal need as well as a challengingintellectual problem. The impacts of human-caused changes on the global carbon cycle will befelt for hundreds to thousands of years. Direct observations of carbon stocks and flows,process-based understanding, data synthesis, and careful modelling are needed to determinehow the carbon cycle is being modified, what the consequences are of these modifications, andhow best to mitigate and adapt to changes in the carbon cycle and climate. The importance ofthe carbon cycle is accentuated by its complex interplay with other geochemical cycles (such asnitrogen and water), its critical role in economic and other human systems, and the global scaleof its interactions. This book provides an overview of research priorities and Congressionalconsiderations relating to carbon cycle science.

CLEAN AIR & WATERSummaries of Major Federal LawsCaroline McNulty, Roger Huber (Editors)

The principal statute addressing air quality concerns, the Clean Air Act was first enacted in1955, with major revisions in 1970, 1977, and 1990. The Act requires the EPA to set health-based standards for ambient air quality, set deadlines for the achievement of those standardsby state and local governments, and requires the EPA to set national emission standards forlarge or ubiquitous sources of air pollution, including motor vehicles, power plants, and otherindustrial sources. The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) is the key federal law for protectingpublic water supplies from harmful contaminants. First enacted in 1974 and substantiallyamended in 1986 and 1996, the act is administered through programs that establish standardsand treatment requirements for public water supplies, control underground injection ofwastes, finance infrastructure projects, and protect sources of drinking water. This bookdescribes both Act's major provisions and provides tables listing all major amendments, withthe year of enactment and Public Law number, and cross-referencing sections of the Acts withthe major U.S. Code sections of the codified statute.

PRESIDENT OBAMA’S CLIMATE ACTION PLANElements & AnalysesShane N. Blake (Editor)

On 25 June 2013, President Obama announced a national plan to reduce emissions of carbondioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHG), as well as to encourage adaptation toexpected climate change. The President affirmed his commitment to his 2009 policy pledge toreduce U.S. GHG emissions by 17% below 2005 levels by 2020 if all other major economiesagreed to limit their emissions as well. In 2011, the United States’ gross GHG emissions wereapproximately 7% below their 2005 levels. The President stated a willingness to work withCongress toward enacting a bipartisan, market-based scheme to reduce GHG emissions. ThePresident’s Climate Action Plan lays out a series of measures in three categories: 1) cut carbonpollution in America, 2) prepare the United States for the impacts of climate change and 3) leadinternational efforts to address global climate change. Many measures included in the ClimateAction Plan have been underway. The plan specifies few timelines or metrics for evaluatingprogress of individual measures beyond national aggregate or sectoral GHG emissions orenergy efficiency. The centrepiece of the President’s announcement arguably is a PresidentialMemorandum, also issued June 25, that directs EPA to issue two types of rules to curtail carbondioxide emissions from new and existing power plants before the end of his term. This bookprovides an overview of President Obama's Climate Action Plan, with a focus on key elementsand analyses.

DIRECTORY OF CONSERVATION FUNDING SOURCES FOR DEVELOPINGCOUNTRIESConservation Biology, Education & Training, Fellowships & ScholarshipsAlfred O Owino, Joseph O. Oyugi

This directory provides an in-depth listing of potential donors for project and proposaldevelopments. This is especially important considering that many students, organisations andindividuals, especially in Africa, still lack adequate information on potential donor organisationsto support their projects and career developments. Due to this problem, many good ideas witha high potential of contributing useful information for environmental conservation anddevelopment actions fail to get support from potential donors, either through lack ofinformation or because of the type of approach strategies adopted. This directory will betterhelp project and proposal developers to acquire information about donors that is necessary totarget project ideas, determine a potential donor's interest in supporting or investing in aproject, and eliminate donors whose missions and objectives do not match particularprogrammes. Once a match is made, this directory will also help to tailor project ideas to thespecific requirements and interests of the donors.

ENZYMES IN VALUE-ADDITION OF WASTESSatinder Kaur Brar, Mausam Verma (Editors)

A sustainable feedstock supply is one of the primordial issues for the transition towards thebio-based economy. Therefore, the resource base needs to be identified from the perspectiveof supply and demand. The exploitable biomass is of a highly heterogeneous origin, eitherderived from specially grown crops or from crop residues of food and feed production, forestryresidues and marine flora. Municipal waste, manure and animal products and industrial wastesalso need to be considered as potential resources for bio-based products and services. In thisregard, enzymes are known to play a pivotal role not only at the stage of production of thesevalue-added products, but also as an important component of value-added products fromdifferent alternative biomasses. Therefore, enzymes become an important factor as value-added products and for value-added products. The use of enzymes holds great potential valuefor industries in many sectors, including energy, organic chemicals, polymers, fabrics andhealthcare products. In general, an enzyme based bio-economy offers many benefits andopportunities. For completed book description, please visit our link below.
