REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

2014

RAY CARAWAYPRESIDENT

CHRIS OTTOCHAIR, BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Over the past year, the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado has distributed $7 million in grants and programs to dozens of

organizations and causes, helped hundreds of individual donors carry out their long-term charitable plans, and

was recognized as Colorado’s “Foundation of the Year.” Yet, as the Foundation approaches its 40th anniversary, we are

still often asked a very fundamental question: What exactly does the Community Foundation of

Northern Colorado do? The answer to this question has not developed by chance. It is the product of ongoing analysis

by our Board of Trustees and has grown out of the 100-year history of community foundations in America.

The Community Foundation is a nonpartisan, independent, regional nonprofit organization that belongs to the entire community and is a resource for donors and nonprofits. Over the past 40 years, it has been entrusted with hundreds of charitable funds – all individual funds set up by different donors for a wide range of charitable causes. Forty-eight nonprofit organizations in our region have also entrusted their permanent endowment funds to the Community Foundation.

Serving as the long-term steward for these charitable funds is a multifaceted role that involves receiving and managing complex gifts, acting as the trustee of charitable trusts, providing numerous investment options for donors, and accounting for each individual fund. In just the past few years, the Foundation has received gifts of farm land, residential homes, water rights, art collections, and even a manufacturing firm. The charitable funds created by these gifts produce millions of dollars each year for nonprofit organizations and charitable causes in our region.

In addition to its role as the steward of charitable assets (many of which are permanent endowments), the Foundation is also increasingly serving as a

community leader, convener, and catalyst. Recent projects of this kind include:

• Serving an ongoing role as an advocate, convener, and funder for downtown revitalization in Loveland

• Raising and distributing millions of dollars for needs related to the floods of 2013 and the fires of 2012

• Serving as the fiscal sponsor for projects like the Whitewater Park being planned for the Poudre River in Fort Collins

• Leading the ColoradoGives online giving effort in our region to help maximize its potential as a funding source for local nonprofits

All of these things happen because of the generosity of local donors. We are grateful for the trust you place in the Community Foundation and believe that its role as a community institution goes far beyond the dollars it raises and distributes. It is designed for perpetuity and approaches issues with a long-term perspective. It is a repository of community knowledge – a part of our history and an even bigger part of our future. As we say in a frequently used tagline, the Community Foundation is here "For Good. For Ever."

Thank you for being a part of the Community Foundation’s 40-year history of service and for providing the generosity that fuels all that it does.

DEFININGOUR ROLE

The Community Foundation works to make charitable giving easy, effective, and enjoyable.

Hundreds of families and individuals have established Donor Advised funds at the Community Foundation. They entrust their resources – in the form of cash, real estate, stock, estate gifts, and more – to the Community Foundation and depend on it to be the long-term steward of these assets. Grants can be recommended by an individual, a family, or a committee at any time throughout the year. A Donor Advised fund combines convenience, flexibility, and value with the expertise of professional staff.

The Tanks A Lot Fund is a culmination of years of hard work by my parents (Spence and Betty Van Alsburg), followed by my brother Scott, my husband Jim, and me. The fund provides a way for our business – Advance Tank and Construction – to give back to our community, be thankful for what our parents did before us, and recognize the gift of being able to continue our parents' legacy. As a family we have always felt strongly about supporting organizations that address basic human services, such as the Food Bank for Larimer County, and the Tanks A Lot Fund at the Community Foundation has easily helped the legacy come alive."

Our local area has a plethora of nonprofits helping fulfill the needs, dreams, and interests of so many who live in Northern Colorado. We’re happy to be able to help a variety of those organizations, focusing on both human services and the arts, through our fund at the Community Foundation."

PETER SPRINGBERG & LYNNETTE JUNG-SPRINGBERG – JUNG-SPRINGBERG FUND

Every gift has power, and giving to our community is transformational – perhaps even more for the giver than for the recipient! We are proud to partner with an organization that has demonstrated such expertise and community leadership in Northern Colorado and one that makes giving back to our community incredibly easy and convenient. The Community Foundation of Northern Colorado has been a great partner in helping us accomplish our philanthropic goals."

ANDY & SUZANNE PETERSON – ANDY & SUZANNE PETERSON FAMILY FUND

We created our Donor Advised fund several years ago as part of our estate plan. Our fund will provide a means for our final estate to continue helping charities. By establishing the fund now, we have been able to begin making annual distributions, and we have been able to experience joy when we see the excitement and appreciation of the charities being supported by our fund."

Our Legacy Society recognizes all those who have extended their charitable giving beyond their lifetime in some manner. It includes all donors who have established an endowment fund during their lifetime, advised our staff that the Community Foundation is in their estate plans, or made a gift from their estate into an endowed fund. These gifts will benefit Northern Colorado far into the future.

Interested in becoming a part of this list of strategic donors? The Community Foundation would be honored to help you put a plan in place to leave a legacy that will shape the future of Northern Colorado.

We work hard to maintain the trust and respect of CPAs, attorneys, and financial representatives and are proud of the partnerships we’ve formed throughout Northern Colorado.

“Donor Advised funds established at the Community Foundation can simply and effectively allow my clients to make important contributions benefiting charitable organizations. A Charitable Legacy

One of the most unique gifts ever donated to the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado is a small manufacturing firm with approximately 40 employees.

When Hap Enander passed away, his estate plans provided that the company he founded was to be used for charitable purposes; his estate plans also appointed several trustees to carry out his wishes. After looking at all the options available to them, the trustees decided to entrust Hap’s company, Aqua-Hot, Inc., to the Community Foundation as the long-term steward of the asset. The company was placed into a Donor Advised fund, and the trustees became the fund advisors and grantmaking committee. They work closely with the Community Foundation staff to fulfill Hap’s charitable dream. Through dividends and the eventual liquidation of the company in a manner that keeps it locally owned, the Donor Advised fund has become one of the Community Foundation’s largest funds.

Upon receipt of the company, the Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees appointed a corporate board to oversee its management. Under the leadership of Paul Harter, CEO, and Chris Osborn, Aqua-Hot Board Chair, the company saw a dramatic increase in value prior to its recent liquidation by the Community Foundation. The Foundation continues to own a minority interest in the company, all of which is allocated to the Enander Family Foundation Fund – Hap’s charitable legacy.

Supporting Northern Colorado Nonprofit Endowment FundsAgency Endowment funds are established by nonprofit organizations as a way to support their efforts far into the future. Nonprofits that establish an endowment fund at the Community Foundation benefit from an investment program and planned giving services; our team’s expertise in handling gifts that involve complex assets, gift annuities, and trust arrangements; and exposure to our family of donors and fund advisors. Partnering with the Community Foundation allows agencies to focus on the work they do best – positively impacting children and families, the arts and education, animals and the environment, and our community at large.

Annual Report 2014 11

Throughout the years, the Community Foundation has been the resource that is quickly mobilized when the community is in need; in the case of fires, floods, and community projects, it has increasingly stepped up and connected the region around a common goal.

In June 2014, the Community Foundation served as the catalyst to engage the communities of Estes Park, Fort Collins, and Loveland to take part in an Urban Land Institute advisory services panel on resiliency. This panel of

experts (funded largely by a grant from the Kresge Foundation) was asked to address how we might plan for a future natural disaster and what we can do to better recover from the recent flood and fires. This panel and the report it produced is just one example of how the Foundation works toward a more collaborative Northern Colorado and a better future for our region.

To see a copy of the final report released by the Urban Land Institute, visit www.NoCoFoundation.org.

BERTHOUDIn 2014, the Berthoud Community Fund Committee completed a successful campaign to grow the Berthoud Community Fund. With matching gifts from an anonymous donor and the Doyle and Luvesta Frances Jones Fund, more than $600,000 was raised. This brings the total balance of this permanent endowment for Berthoud to over $1 million, allowing the committee to more than double the grants it distributes each year to local organizations.

ESTES PARKThe Community Foundation is serving as a sponsor for Estes Valley Legacy, a collaborative planned giving effort involving numerous Estes Valley nonprofits. Grants from the Estes Valley Community Fund and the Community Foundation's Initiatives Fund are supporting this effort to encourage and motivate Estes Valley residents to consider leaving a charitable legacy through their estate plans.

FORT COLLINSThe Fort Collins Community Fund Committee has a history of making matching grants that promote the growth of endowments. In recent years, this fund has helped organizations such as the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery, Touchstone Health Partners, and Pathways Hospice grow their permanent endowment funds. Most recently, the committee issued a challenge grant to the Fort Collins Children’s Theatre to serve as a catalyst for its endowment building efforts.

LOVELANDFor the last several years, the Loveland Community Fund Committee has focused its efforts on the revitalization of downtown Loveland. This committee has given leadership and funding to projects and events that have dramatically shaped the way the larger community views the importance of its downtown. As a result, the vitality of downtown Loveland is clearly on the rise.
