EDITORIALCoronavirus vaccine in India, Russia,Oxford and the US update tracker status news:

The race to develop Coronavirus COVID19 vaccine has become an intriguing one after UK’s Oxford-AstraZeneca, Russia, US-based Moderna, India’s COVAXIN and Zydus Cadila, and Chinese companiesincluding Sinovac made significant progress. Around the world, over 160 potential Coronavirus

COVID19 vaccines are at different stages of development. Out of those, as many as 26 vaccines havemanaged to enter human trials phase.

Russia has been claiming that the “World’s first Coronavirus COVID vaccine” would be ready byAugust. According to a Bloomberg report, Russia’s business and political elite have been given access tothe experimental potential Coronavirus vaccine. The vaccine, which is being developed by the GamaleyaResearch Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, has been funded by the state-run Russian DirectInvestment Fund. The project is also backed by the Defense Ministry. Last week, a phase 1 trial of thepotential vaccine candidate involving military personnel was completed. However, no result has beenpublished. The institute has already begun the next stage of testing with a larger group. However, researchers in Russia have claimed that the potential vaccine candidate is “safe and reliable”.

The much-awaited result of Phase I/II trials of the Oxford University’s vaccine candidate ‘AZD1222’ hasjust been released and it just might be the first piece of good news in 2020. The results which have beenpublished in the medical journal The Lancet reinstate the earlier media reports which cited that Oxford’svaccine candidate is fit for human use and develops protective immunity in the body of the volunteers. As per the latest update, Richard Horton, the editor of the UK-based science journal ‘The Lancet’ notedthat “the vaccine is safe, well-tolerated, and immunogenic.” While the researchers and developers ofthe AstraZeneca-backed potential vaccine did not comment on the media reports doing rounds, theLancet medical journal published the data of Phase I trial of Oxford and AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccinecandidate, AZD1222, today. The results were found to be "extremely promising" and the vaccinecandidate has been deemed fit for human use.

In March 2020, the Moderna, backed by Bill Gates began testing its messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine ina phase I clinical trial in Seattle, Washington. In mid-May, Moderna announced the vaccine had producedantibodies in all 45 trial participants in this initial clinical phase. The study included 45 healthy volunteers, ages 18 to 55, who are getting two shots 28 days apart. Moderna has developed other mRNA vaccinesbefore. Those earlier studies showed that their platform is safe, which allowed it to skip certain animaltesting for this specific vaccine. In early May, 2020, Moderna received permission from the FDA to start aphase II study of its vaccine. It expects to begin a phase III clinical trial in July. The FDA also agreed tofast-track regulatory review of this vaccine if it succeeds in a phase III clinical trial. The initial results haveshown early promise. The firm will begin Phase 3 trails with 30,000 on July 27, 2020.

The human trials of India’s indigenous COVAXIN are set to begin in AIIMS-Delhi, Redkar Hospital inGoa and Bhubaneswar’s Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital. The clinical trials of thepotential vaccine, which is being developed by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), BharatBiotech International Limited (BBIL), and National Institute of Virology, Pune, has begun at AIIMS Patnaand PGI Rohtak. Clinical trials of the Covaxin will also begin at Medical institutes and various hospitals.

WHO has recognized that over 20 potential coronavirus vaccine candidates are at the human trialstages and almost half of those are being developed by Chinese firms. One such is Sinovac. WHO hassaid that along with Oxford, “good news” in results shown by a Chinese firm. Chinese pharmaceuticalfirm Sinovac is the only third in the world to enter Phase 3 trials. The large scale testing is set to begin insix states in Brazil. Sinovac has also received a nod for Phase 3 trials in Bangladesh.

Even if a vaccine is developed and distributed, it’s unlikely to be completely effective. The measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is effective 97 percent of the time while the seasonal flu vaccine tops out at60 percent. Still, even a less-effective vaccine may reduce the severity of disease if someone gets COVID-19. But some experts are worried that people who get the vaccine may stop doing other measuresneeded to control the spread of the new coronavirus, such as handwashing and staying home when sick.

Experts are warning that mild COVID-19symptoms can quickly escalate to serious, possibly life threatening symptoms. While

the majority of people with COVID-19 will eitherhave mild or no symptoms, doctors say eventhose with mild symptoms should be on thelookout for worsening symptoms that couldbecome serious.

“This disease can cause mild symptoms insomeone, and then they recover in a couple ofdays or a week and do well after that. Incontrast, they can be ill at some point prior to orafter formal diagnosis, recover a lot or slightly, then get seriously ill 7 to 10 days later in whatwe think is likely related to immunedysregulation, or the cytokine storm we have allheard about,” says Dr. Dana Hawkinson, themedical director of infection prevention andcontrol at The University of Kansas HealthSystem.

Cytokine storms refer tothe overreaction of thebodyʼs immune system.Theyʼre a commoncomplication inrespiratory diseases, suchas COVID-19 and severe acute respiratorysyndrome (SARS). When the virus that causesCOVID-19 enters the lungs, it causes theimmune system to respond and bring immunecells to the lungs to attack the virus. This causesinflammation.

OVER REACTING IMMUNE SYSTMIn some people, the immune system

overreacts, resulting in the activation of moreimmune cells, causing hyper-inflammation. Thiscan be fatal. Usually when people get it, it startsoff as a cold or asymptomatic. Then, it canprogress and cause pneumonia, [which is] themain thing that causes people to be sick. Thatusually occurs around day 6 or 7 of the illness.

Some of this is due to the direct effect [of thevirus] on the lungs themselves, but much of it isalso due to the host — the patientʼs immuneresponse to the virus, which can causerespiratory distress syndrome. There are alsoreports now of some people with COVID-19developing what doctors describe as “silenthypoxia.” Thatʼs where blood oxygen saturationlevels become low but a person doesnʼtexperience a feeling of breathlessness.

THERE AREALSO REPORTSNOW OF SOMEPEOPLE WITHCOVID-19DEVELOPINGWHAT DOCTORSDESCRIBE AS“SILENTHYPOXIA.”THATʼS WHEREBLOOD OXYGENSATURATIONLEVELSBECOME LOWBUT A PERSONDOESNʼTEXPERIENCE AFEELING OFBREATHLESS-NESS.

GOING FROMMILD TO SEVEREAccording to the Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention (CDC), symptom Source canappear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus.

These symptoms can include:● Fever● Cough● Chills● Muscle pain● Headache● Loss of taste or smell● Sore throat● Shortness of breath or difficulty breathingAn office worker is screened with an infraredthermometer as he enters a building in NewDelhi, India.

Right now, experts say thereʼs no way ofpredicting if a personʼs symptoms will progressfrom mild to severe, although there are riskfactors that could make this more likely.

This virus and the infection it causes seems tobe very unpredictable. We know about commonsymptoms — fever, cough, shortness of breath— but we are seeing more and more otheratypical presentations. In addition, we areseeing the escalation of symptoms from mild tosevere disease.

There are common risk factors such as age, diabetes, hypertension, lung disease, andimmunosuppression, but unfortunately, thisdisease process and severe illness can affectanyone, and we have seen that happen.

MONITORING THE SYMPTOMSFor people quarantining at home, the

CDC advises that medical attentionshould be sought immediately if a

person experiences symptoms, such as troublebreathing, confusion, persistent pain or pressurein the chest, and bluish lips or face.

Doctors say itʼs important to check in regularlywith people with COVID-19 who are in isolation. They could have a sudden escalation insymptoms without anyone knowing. We need tobe connected with others. Anything couldhappen to them. They may develop weaknessso fast they canʼt even reach for the phone. Weneed to make sure people are connected andlooking after each other.

We want to make sure people who are sick, who arenʼt getting better, who have a worseningillness, and who have shortness of breath ordifficulty breathing seek medical attentionimmediately and get the care they need.

TREATING MILD SYMPTOMSWhile there isnʼt a treatment that can stop

symptoms from progressing from mild to severe,Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious diseaseexpert at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, says there are things people with mild symptomscan do at home to feel better.

“I would think good hydration is the singlemost important thing to help you feel somewhatbetter. If you have a fever, taking a medication toreduce your fever will make you feel better,” hetold. Whenever anyone has influenza or anyrespiratory infection, we ask them to stay awayfrom alcoholic beverages. Be careful withbeverages with caffeine such as coffee or teabecause they tend to be dehydrating. What youwant to do is drink a lot of water. If youʼre sick, Iwould suggest if youʼre not already 6 feet awayfrom everybody, please do that right away andbe meticulous not to give the virus anopportunity to spread.

Icome from a middle-class family, am 20years old and am the only daughter among four

older brothers. One would think that I am loved andpampered by them, but nothing could be fartherfrom the truth. The truth is that because my fatherdied 10 years ago when we were growing up andmy mother is not capable of controlling my brothers, they grew up wild and none of them paid me anyattention.

Money has been a problem in our family eversince my father died and all of us children havebeen left more or less to our own devices sincethen.Since I am younger than my brothers I wasless able to fend for myself and as I am a girl,I was also forced to do household chores. All in all,I have had and still have a miserable life.

But something totally unexpected has suddenlyhappened, something that has totally changed mylife. This was that a few days ago I received anofficial communication from a lawyer telling me thatI have inherited `three crore from a distant relativeof my fatherʼs and that he would come and see meand explain to me how the money would be paid tome.Of course this led to unbelievable excitementin the family – but in the excitement, I was totallyforgotten and my brothers all acted as if it was themwho had inherited the money!

The lawyer came with half a dozen others andmy brothers sat down with them and began to askthem how and when the money would be given tous. But the lawyers refused to discuss the matterwith them and said that I was the only one theywould talk to as only I was involved in the matter!

Q A&Personal Problems

I AM YOUNGERTHAN MYBROTHERS IWAS LESSABLE TO FENDFOR MYSELFAND AS I AM AGIRL,I WAS ALSOFORCED TO DOHOUSEHOLDCHORES. ALLIN ALL, I HAVEHAD AND STILLHAVE AMISERABLELIFE.

They said that this was what the person who hadleft me the money had told them to do.

Now I am to go and meet the lawyers. Mybrothers have ordered me to complete theformalities and bring the money home. But I do notfeel like doing this. This will be my only chance tohave a good life and why should I give all mymoney to brothers who have done nothing for me?

Please advise. What you have decided to do is the correct thing.

When you go and see the lawyer, tell him that youneed help in managing your newly got money andkeeping safe from your brothers. Then ask him if hewill do it for a charge. He will either agree to do it ofwill suggest someone else to take care of thingsfor you.

When the lawyer and the men with him explainthings to you, ask questions till you understandwhat they are saying. When you get your money,do not keep much money at home. Ask the lawyerto help you invest it. Ask him to explain whatever hedoes to you. If you are not satisfied with anyone, getanother manager. I would be best if you moved outof your family home and got yourself another place.Get yourself help and do not stay alone. You couldask your mother to stay with you.

Give your brothers some money but do not beovergenerous. Tell them to work for their living. Helpthem if they start a business. Learn how to manageyour money and be careful with it. You cannotexpect to get such a windfall again.

IAM THE 14-YEAR-OLD ONLY DAUGHTER OF MY PARENTS.SINCE I could understand things, I have knownthat my father and mother do not get along and by

the time I was 12, I knew that they both were waitingfor me to grow up so that they could be divorced andcould remarry partners they loved.

thinking all this. Yes, both of them were waiting forme to become 16, but it was not out of concern forme. According to a letter written by my grandfatherto both of them which had been submitted in court, they would be eligible to inherit one third each of hismoney only if they remained married and broughtme up together, while I would inherit the remainingthird. However if they failed to bring me up togethertill I was 16, all the money would come to me!

I understood all this when I happened to read acopy of the letter my grandfather had written. Nowthat I have understood why my parents are soreluctantly caring for me, I am shattered but alsofurious.According to another point made in theletter, they would lose their chance to inherit anymoney if I was unhappy and applied to court sayingthat I did not want to stay with them.

Should I do this? You have been treated in an atrocious manner

and your anger is very understandable. In fact, it isincomprehensible that any parent could be so self-involved that they are oblivious to how unhappyand neglected their only child is.

Your unhappiness is also likely to affect yourattitude to people in general and to life itself. So it isimportant that you get over your unhappiness andanger and develop a positive and happy attitude tolife. To get this positive attitude, you should firstconfront your parents and tell them how you havesuffered from their indifference and neglect.

Scare them by telling them that you are seriouslythinking of telling the authorities that you do notwant to stay with them. Make them rattled and theirattitude is likely to improve. But the truth is that youcannot really depend on your parents and have todepend on yourself. Try and prepare yourself forthis. Start by getting yourself help, according to yourgrandfatherʼs wishes. You should also get yourself apsycologist.

Q A&Beauty Queries

Please give me some tips on removingmake-up the natural way. My skin is sensitive

and I would like to avoid commercial beautyproducts.

It is very important to remove all make-up beforegoing to bed as this helps the facial skin breathe, and prevents clogging of pores leading toblackheads, acne and other blemishes.

A very popular method of cleaning off make-up ishoney and baking soda. Take honey in a bowl andsprinkle baking soda on it. Mix thoroughly and applywith a cotton on face and wipe off firmly andgently. This is an exfoliator and cleanser, suitable forall kinds of make-up.

Take a little coconut oil in your palm and wipe it allover face, without rubbing it in. Remove with atissue or cotton ball. This cleans and moisturizesskin excellently.

If your make-up is light, simple milk is a goodcleanser, and a good hydrator as well. Steamingface removes stubborn make-up but you shouldensure that you clean it off thoroughly or it couldcause acne.

Iam a 25-year-old woman who is only 5ʼ2”tall. Thismakes me wear high- heeled footwear always!

During my working day in the bank, I always wearstilettoes. Nowadays, I am suffering from a backache and a stiffness in the ankles. Could this be dueto the footwear I use? Please advise.

You seem to have hit the nail on the head!Podiatrists warn that high heels alters the angle ofthe body and causes imbalance feelings. Pain will

be felt from the knees to the spine, and even lead tothe formation of corns, bunions and blisters.

This does not mean that you will have to eschewhigh heels altogether. Use good walking shoeswhen going to work and slip on the heeled footwearwhen you are in the office. When working at yourstation, slip them off and wriggle your toes to loosenmuscles and relax feet.

If the discomfort you feel is intense, it is advisableto change your footwear and choose lower heels. Two to four cms are safe. You arches should getgood support as well. Wear very high heels only forinfrequent outings.

In case you continue to feel pain and discomfort, itis best to consult a chiropodist to evaluate yourcondition

Now that summer is here, please give me sometips on how to have a clean, fresh look on the

face. My skin tends to become greasy and dull dueto the heat, humidity and dust. I am a 32-year-oldliving in Mumbai.

You are right in thinking that our beauty routineshould be modified with the change in the seasons. In summer, with the heat and grime, it is importantto clean your face at least three times a day. Use asoap-free cleanser. A clay mask once a week isperfect for dealing with oiliness.

Another way of clearing skin is by exfoliation witha mild chemical peel or an appropriate scrub whichwill remove dead skin cells and leave your face witha glowʼ.

Avoid heavy make-up; use light, less productswhich do not contain oils and emoliants.Theseshould contain antioxidants. But an SPF of at least30 is important to avoid the effects of the sunʼs ultraviolet rays.

Take care to remove all make-up at bedtime andallow skin to breathe.

Please tell me how to deal with hair in my nostrils.I have a thickish growth and often wonder how

most women have clean, hair-free nostrils. The easiest and most convenient way is to use a

tiny scissors which are often included in groomingkits. As these have rounded tips, you will not nick orpoke skin.Stand in front of mirror, in good light, blownose to remove any mucous; raise your head.

Then carefully trim hair as close to skin aspossible. It is best to trim only the front visible hairs, and not go deep into your nostrils with the scissors.

Blow nose to remove bits of hair and wash in coolwater. An electric nose hair trimmer with roundedrazors is another option. It can be bought in a goodbeauty product outlet or online too.

Avoid waxing or laser too as far as possible. Donot pluck hairs as this could lead to infection whichcan even reach the brain! Depilatories, hair removalcreams, etc, are definitely not to be used.

I have heard a lot about chemical peel. What is thisand is it safe?

In the procedure termed chemical peel, achemical is applied to the skin to exfoliate it andgradually peel off. It is used to improve the conditionof the face, hands, or neck, and makes the arealook smoother and less wrinkled than the originalskin. The new skin is more sensitive and feels rawfor a few days before it heals completely.

The treatment uses light, medium or deepchemicals according to the requirements. Usually, these are alpha hydroxy acid peels, which areglycolic or lactic acids, beta hydroxy acid peels, retinoic acid peels or phenol croton oil peel.

The results are almost always very gratifying andthere are very few adverse side effects. Ensurethough that you go to an experienced and qualifiedcosmetic surgeon. This procedure is not advisablefor teenagers, under 18 years of age.

Perhaps youʼre gettinginventive with newmasturbation strategies, possibly you and your lifepartner are isolated togetherand testing out new placesaround your living quartersto engage in sexual relationsthat arenʼt your bed, perhaps youʼre getting intovirtual sex.

Ahhh, COVID-19—youhave furnished us withtesting times on such asignificant number of fronts, however not least of which ischanging in accordance withbeing cut off from our socialuniverses.

Never have we felt so… cloistered. Althoughfor a significant number of us, there is the weirdinconsistency of feeling as though there is nogetting away those with whom we are sociallydetached.

Our requirements for intimacy do not turn onand off like a tap, regardless of the stunningvelocity with which we have wound up boltedaway from others. For all our disdain of thehorde ways that advanced innovations havetransformed our associations in the course ofrecent decades, a considerable lot of us arecurrently deeply grateful to the different ways wewould now be able to see and hear thosegenerally essential to us.

The every day portion of heightened anxietybrought to us civility of the news can leave us

requiring solace that is human in structure. Surethere is a spot for getting occupied in Netflix orsorting out an online “quartini” hour withcompanions, yet we are customized withrequirements for physical contact.

On the off chance that you are lucky to beconfined with your cozy accomplice (oraccomplices, for the individuals who live pastdoubles), in theory, it may appear to be anincredible chance to get up to speed with allthat sex that at times gets put on pause fromthe requests of work, family, and hustlingaround town like tasered chickens, as we arewont to do.

Donʼt under-gauge the accumulative stress ofthis disengagement, be that as it may. While youmay feel an extraordinary requirement for solaceand closeness, it frequently requires a totallydifferent mentality to be intrigued, stirred, andprepared for sexual association explicitly. Agenuinely cheerful attitude. Numerousindividuals, however particularly numerousladies, report inconvenience isolating from thenerves of their reality during sexual experiences.

Then again, sex gives an extraordinarymethods for association and has somephenomenal diverting and engagingcharacteristics to it as well. Consider making anarrangement with your accomplice for sex laterin the day, at that point move in the direction oflimiting your floundering in coronavirus updates.

Think ahead—envision interfacing sexually.Think some hot musings, imagine what you maydo or attempt. Also, on the off chance that youcan, include some contacting for the duration ofthe day, even solace contacting, embraces, somewhat pat on the butt, to move nearergenuinely.

Research shows that the individuals who take

part in these little personal contacts over thecourse of the day have more groundedconnections and sexual association. It isanything but a chicken-or-egg question: beginconnecting and closeness increases.

“That is incredible,” you state, “yet imagine ascenario where I have no accomplice or Iʼmaway from an accomplice?” If you have noaccomplice, consider contacting your pulverize, that somebody for whom you feel a little sparkle,or that individual from before (even distal past)for a little personal lift. Perhaps help that toremember a period you shared. In look into, wecall these “Heating surfaces” or “Alluring Others”which means the people in our lives with whomwe share a wee attraction or with whom we havehad something before – they cause us to feelassociated, appealing, and alive.

Whatʼs more, on the off chance that you havean accomplice, however you are isolated rightnow, or on the off chance that you are stayingaway from all physical contact with everybody(even an accomplice under the equivalentroof), this is an ideal time to try different thingswith online life and different types of sexadvancements. There is virtual reality porn, sex robots, web associated sex toys, forexample, accomplice controlled “brilliant”vibrators. Indeed, even long-separation kissinggadgets. Do some schoolwork; you will bestunned.

Keep in mind, we are altogether different fromone another, just like our requirements for closeassociation. Do not apologize or feel regretful forneeding to associate explicitly—we originatefrom a long, long queue of precursors whoobviously drew profits by sex. It is a piece of ourprogramming, and now like never before, wehave to give it some time and attention.

The word fashion itself brings to mind a flashof colour with a dash of glamour. It is a visiblecreativity of people, which can enhance thebeauty and personality of anyone. Fashion isjust like seasons – it keeps changing and addingcolour, print, texture and material as the seasongoes on. Fashion includes footwear, make-up,accessories, hairstyle, clothing, lifestyle andproducts. Fashion can be feminine andmasculine, but nowadays we follow the trend of

“Androgyny”. There is beautiful quote by BacheZoe “Style is a way to say who you are withouthaving to speak.”

Today, there are a couple of hundred Indianfashion designers peddling designs and wares. Some are well known and are expanding, slowlybut surely, into the international market. India'sromance with fashion design has just begun andis bound to grow by leaps and bounds. Glamourhas caught on. Young women want to emulatemodels and the designer wear of Hindi film stars.

Fusion of Indian and western looks are all therage. Then there is everything from pure ethnicwear, highly suitable for Indian bridal collectionsto purely Western style designer wear for the redcarpet. India loves fashion!

India hosts its own fashion weeks in Delhi andMumbai which seem to be getting bigger andbetter every year. The names are getting knownas well – Rohit Bal, Tarun Tahiliani, Ritu Kumar,Manish Malhotra, Ritu Beri, Manish Arora, SatyaPaul, Rocky S, the list just keeps growing.

MARKET SIZEThe Indian fashion industry is expected to

reach US$ 400 million in a couple of years withthe vigorous growth of over 10 per cent year-on-year. While this is tiny compared to the globalindustry, it is not too bad for an industry in thisstage of infancy.

The reason India's fashion industry will have abright future is that it has a large youngpopulation. This, combined with increasingdisposable incomes, has led to an increase inconsumerism. So, those who can afford it arelooking for high quality and originality. They lovebrand names. Hence, we can say that the futureof the fashion industry in India looks promising.

We JULY 2020

POTENTIALThis industry offers an abundance of

opportunities for artistic, hard-working andenthusiastic people. The scenario for fashiondesign graduates looks good, thanks to theenormous and still increasing demand for stylishclothes and the number of exports.

After successful accomplishment of thegraduate course, one can be self-employed. Onthe other hand, several garment store chains, export houses, leather companies, textile mills, boutiques, fashion show organisers andjewellery houses recruit professionals fascinatedwith a career in fashion designing. Hereby, thefashion industry relies a lot on India's authentic, beautiful history and rich, diverse culture, tomake its unique clothing. Growing recognition ofthis industry, which hinges on its cultural style, has many of us wondering just when and if theIndian fashion industry will get the green light togo international.

Some important tips toremember on fashionDenim – find your fit and save it for life:

High-rise, low-rise, boot cut, boyfriend, baggy, etc. Knowing what suits your body type and sizeis life-saving. These are everyday essentials, and you canʼt go wrong with them.Understand the colour wheel: It might seem a

little unnecessary, but you will be more than gladyou looked this up because itʼs a game changerand gives you a new perspective when matchingup colours. Remember, there cannot be morethan three colours in your outfit at one time.Organise your closet every three months: A

capsule wardrobe is a concept many women areturning towards and enjoying the benefits of. If

We JULY 2020

you think that it will not work for you, at leastorganise your closet once in a while. You willslowly start to realise how many things you donot use are there in your wardrobe and willdiscard them anyway.Accessorise your outfits away: Accessories

are an integral part of dressing up. Keep asidesome money just for accessories. Just onechunky piece of jewellery can marry an entireoutfit. Wear them as per the occasion – office, party, concert, etc.Donʼt mix too many colours or prints

or both: Colourful florals with plain skirts orbottoms, or printed dresses with plainaccessories and shoes are good – thereʼs a wayto mix them up. You simply cannot afford tomess up.Play with prints and patterns: Playing with

patterns and prints is an art in itself. Some havea natural knack for working with prints, some ofus need to learn them. Thereʼs nothing Googlecannot help you with, so prepare yourself andact like a pro.Lastly, be confident: Nothing, nothing works

as confidence does. And, unfortunately, thereʼsno workaround to this one. Be you, be beautiful.

Being trendy and fashionable is just yourown wish, no one can force you to do it and itis your own decision about how much and whattype of fashion you are preferring according toplace and requirement. Though this time of the21st century in India mostly people areaffected by the glamorous world and style offashion, still they have not forgotten ourtraditions and culture which is the priority andsymbol of our country. Following and applyingfashion in life is not bad until it affects orimpacts badly on others.

The Spiral ofMisery

Isnʼt life too short to be making the same oldmistakes? Yet we either consciously orunconsciously fall into those previous

patterns, that led to our ruin in the first place.I remember seeing him for the first time and

those liquid amber eyes seemed to pierce mysoul. Theyʼd be the death of me I had thought atthe time, and little did I know that it mightactually turn out to be true. But my only regretremains, letting him go twice.

Meeting him this time was like seeing him forthe first time all over again – the same butterflies

in my stomach, feeling like everything was inslow-mo and nothing else seemed to matter atall. Just like before, blood rushed to my face onbeing caught looking.

He was still looking at me with the sameintensity, his mischievous eyes still promising totake me places I had never been before.

But that plane had already taken off, takinghim away from me forever. So what reason didthis man have to come back crashing into my lifeagain, making me reminisce the past, go over allthose feelings all over again – giving rise toemotions that were better left in the grave?

What was even left to be said? Everything wasover, I was never going to be happy, he hadmade sure of that he had made peace with it. Sowhy was my traitorous body reacting this way?Why did I still want to just bury myself I hisarms? This urge to be with him was ridiculous.

His wicked smirk were daring me to make thefirst move. Just like before, I took the bait

but, to my shock and everyone elseʼs around us,my fist made contact with his clean-shaven face, making him reel backwards.

“I did deserve it,” he winced.“Well it was a long time coming,” I agreed“You havenʼt changed one bit, have you,

Myra?” he mused. “Still punching peoplearound.”

I did not go around punching people but I keptmum, not wanting to start an argument. I wasexhausted; by this party in my honour, by hisface that was beginning to irritate me. So Iwalked away.

“I need to talk to you,” he shouted, trying tofollow me.

“There is nothing left to talk about, notanymore,” I yelled back

The hurt on his face made me double back butwhat did I care about someone who snatchedmy heart, and tore it to pieces. Plunging theknife in deeper, I hissed, “Now, if you will excuseme, I have a fiance I need to get back to.”

Iwent inside to find Rehan, my fiance talkingever so graciously to some guests; he reallywas my saving grace, picking me up when I

had no hope, making me feel complete again, unlike Aarav who left so many holes in my soul.

He looked so calm and peaceful that I didnʼtfeel like informing him of the coming storm. Yet Iperformed that odious task and he listened tome with furrowed brows, but reassured me thatwe would be fine.

Next day we glimpsed Aarav in the market, cool and assessing as usual. On finding usthere, he strolled in our direction.

Betyou are just

jealous because youwill never have anything Iown,” Aarav taunted.

“So you consider Myra to beyour property now,” Rehan

snapped back. The argument grew so heated

that Aarav pulled out hisgun to shoot Rehan who

tensed and froze onthe spot.

HE LOOKEDSO CALMAND PEACEFULTHAT I DIDNʼTFEEL LIKEINFORMINGHIM OF THECOMINGSTORM.

"You look well," he commented"What did you expect?" I retorted “To see me

stuck here in sorrow while you enjoy travellingthe world?”

“Hey, itʼs not like I didnʼt invite you with me.You were the one who declined.”

“And then you cheated on me, Did I ask you todo that too?” anger was radiating off me now.

“Listen, I am ashamed of how I handled things.I was a fool. After travelling the world I havecome to the realisation that I love you and noone can take your place. I am the best choice foryou. Only I can keep you happy. Donʼt you wantto see what it would be like if we hadnʼt beenseparated?”

Rehan stepped in looking flustered, “Whoa, calm down, dude, you should have said thatbefore, now sheʼs taken and happier than shewill ever be with you, so back off.”

We walked away but I couldnʼt stop thinkingabout what Aarav had said. His words keptspinning in my head in an endless loop. Hismanner did seem to be genuine but what did Iknow.

Maybe Rehan noticed because he told me Icould share anything with him. But theatmosphere between the two of us was tense.

Aaravʼs words were getting to me, I wasbeginning to imagine what it would be like if wewere still together, even though we brought outthe worst in each other, everything made sensewhen I was with him. Maybe he had changed.

He came to my house, radiating confidencethat bordered on arrogance. But once hestarted talking about the past his demeanourappeared to soften, my anger evaporated and, just like that, we were back to how we used tobe. I was a creature of habit and he was myaddiction.

SOON, I FOUNDMYSELFCHEATING ONREHAN,SOMETHING IHAD NEVERIMAGINEDMYSELF TO BECAPABLE OF. ITRIED TO STOPMYSELF. IKNEW ITWOULD ONLYEND BADLY BUTI HAD NO SELF-CONTROLWHEN IT CAMETO AARAV.

Soon, I found myself cheating on Rehan, something I had never imagined myself to becapable of. I tried to stop myself. I knew it wouldonly end badly but I had no self- control when itcame to Aarav. He told me that I was just beinga baby worrying about him and I should not bethinking about him when we were having somuch fun together.

When Rehan found out, his crushedexpression made me feel guiltier than I alreadywas, I had betrayed the one person who hadhealed me back to life. Here I was unable to doanything to ease his pain. The worst thing wasthat he wasnʼt even mad at me, justdisappointed. If only he had shouted at me,demanded the reason for my betrayal, I wouldnʼtfeel so much remorse oozing out of my body.

He then proceeded to confront Aarav forleading me to the path of self- destruction,

dragging me into a toxic relationship again. I hadnever seen Rehan so heated; he was usually thecalmest and wisest person in the room, heshould know better than to provoke Aarav. It wasnever nice when Aarav got mad. So I tried tostop him but he wouldnʼt listen.

All I could see was red; the rage in the roomwas palpable.

“Bet you are just jealous because you willnever have anything I own,” Aarav taunted.

“So you consider Myra to be your propertynow,” Rehan snapped back.

The argument grew so heated that Aaravpulled out his gun to shoot Rehan who tensedand froze on the spot. I couldnʼt let this happen;he couldnʼt die because of me. I ran in front ofhim just as the bullet escaped the barrel. I couldhear two grown men scream in agony as I hit theground.

Q&AMy mother is about 65 years old. During a

routine whole body check-up, calciumdeficiency was found in her report. I want to knowthe amount of calcium recommended, theirsource, diet rich in calcium and absorption also.

The body of an adult normally contains about1200 gm. of calcium. At least 99 per cent of this ispresent in the skeleton, where calcium salts (chieflyhydroxyapatite), held in a cellular matrix provide thehard structure of the bones and teeth. Obviously allof this calcium comes from the diet. Amongcommon foods, the calcium containing protein ofmilk (caseinogen) is much the richest source, whichis one reason why milk and cheese are especiallyvaluable for growing children. Half a litre of cow'smilk contains about 0.6gm of calcium. Most otherfoods contribute much smaller amounts. However, peas, beans, other vegetables and particularlycereal grains are frequently the chief contributorsbecause of the large amounts eaten. Drinking watercan provide significant amounts of calcium.

In Britain the average intake from this source isabout 75 mg calcium per day, but the variationsare large, from none in water from peaty, acidic hilllochs in Scotland to 200 mg or even more in waterobtained from wells sunk in chalk or limestone. 70to 80 per cent absorption of the calcium in thefood is normally excreted in the faces. Calciumabsorption may be impaired either by lack ofvitamin D, by any conditions causing smallintestinal hurry, by the combination of calcium withexcess fatty acids to form insoluble soaps insteatorrhoea or by certain substances in the dietwhich can form insoluble salts with calcium. These

include foods rich in oxalic acid (eg. spinach) andphytic acid which is present in the outer layers ofcereal grains. Hence 'wholemeal' bread containsmore phytic acid than white. To overcome theinfluence of phytic acid, calcium carbonate hasbeen added to flour in Britain. W.H.O.recommends a daily intake of 500 mg. for adultmen and women, rising to 1200 mg. duringpregnancy and lactation. For adolescent boys andgirls the recommended intake is 600 to 700 mg.daily. In many parts of Africa and Asia childrendevelop healthy bones and adults remain incalcium balance despite calcium intakes whichmay be no more than half the aboverecommendations. Abundant sunshine possiblyproduces this effect. However, a daily intake of1000 mg. should be taken during pregnancy andlactation. Deficiency of calcium and vitamin D gohand in hand and are best considered together.

My mother is about 65 years old and usuallyremains inactive and functionally dependent

on other family members. She is otherwise healthyand has no disease. We have consulted aphysician for this problem. He advised to increaseher level of physical activity with the help ofexercises. I want your opinion about this problem.

Inactive elders are at greater risk of becomingfunctionally dependent then their more physicallyactive counterparts. Higher levels of physicalactivity are associated with reduced risks of futuredisability, disease related morbidity and mortality.Even sedentary elders should be urged to increasetheir level of physical activity. By writing out anexercise prescription, a physician demonstratesthe importance of the activity and may improvecompliance. Components include strength training(isolated muscle group contractions), endurancetraining (walking, cycling, swimming), flexibility

(static stretch of various muscle groups) andbalance (tai chi, dance). Ideally, the patient shouldaim for a total of 30 minutes of activity daily, thoughany increase in exercise is likely to be beneficial.

The type of physical activity prescribed should begeared to the patient's diagnoses and risk factors –eg. quadriceps strengthening for a man withosteoarthritis of the knee, tai chi for a woman withosteoporosis at risk for falls, and aerobic exercisefor a man with cardiovascular risk factors.

Iam a 50-years-old working woman. Since thelast two to three years I am suffering with

hypertension and diabetes. Recently I haveconsulted a physician for this problem. He told methat hypertensive patients with diabetes remainsat a high risk of heart disease, kidney disease andsome other side-effects on various organs of thebody. What is your opinion about this problem?

There must be a special considerations in thetreatment of diabetic hypertensive patients. Hyper-tensive patients with diabetes are at particularlyhigh risk for cardivascular events (heart diseases).More aggressive treatment of hypertension inthese patients prevents progressive nephropathy(kidney disease), myocardial infarction (heartattack) and stroke. Treatment recommendationssuggest a target of blood pressure less than 130and 86 mm of Hg. However, most diabetics requirecombinations of three to five agents to achievethese goals, usually including a diuretic and acalcium channel blocker or beta-blocker. Inaddition to rigorous blood pressure control, management of diabetics should includeaggressive treatment of other risk factors andearly intervention for coronary arteries (arteriessupplying blood to heart) disease and leftventricular dysfunction of heart.

I had followed all the attributes youneed to follow in the organizations like-Dedication, Determination, Hard-Work, Loyalty, and Punctuality; still, I was being terminatedwithout any closure was the worst part. See,moving out of a job was not difficult forme, because life is full ofopportunities; it is just thatI need to grab that... Thedifficult part was tounderstand where Iwent wrong when I wasso dedicated towards myjob. Nothing Is PERMANENTDo you all know your age limit

I was a teacher in one of the reputed skills. One day while doing official work, I observed ourPrincipal mam learning harmonium. I waswondering whatʼs the need for 55+ lady withsuch a good post to learn all these things. Thisis when I realized that there is no ageboundation of learning things you loved to do, itis just the determination and courage to do so...No matter how many people will judge you andtaunt you, but never stop exploring yourself. Atlast, Itʼs Your Own Life. Listen to your heart andfollow the way it is leading to.

Best time for SELF-observationBusy with your job, have you ever been able to

take out time for yourself? The desires you havebut you were not able to fulfilled due to lack oftime, workload, financial crisis, or what so ever!

one of the rich people having good healthwithout relying on any hospitalʼs bed.

Utilization of resources in the BESTWAY

When there is still a great downfall inthe economic crisis, donʼt cry for your lostjob. It is the time when your savings wereone of the greatest supports. So, all thosewho have the habit of spending money forsome mere fun, start developing a habitof savings. It is your money and it willhelp ʻyouʼ only at the time of crisis. Useyour money wisely! Donʼt feel shy to say“No” if you consider it spending useless. As it is your die hard earned money andyou have the right to access it. Do not getinfluenced with your peer pressure.

Take the time to HEAL yourselfItʼs okay losing something where you have

spent your precious time, proving yourself to bethe best asset of the organization without gettingany closure; being terminated, is really veryhard. When thousand of words will be struckbetween your mind and mouth and you will notbe able to explain to yourself what went wrongon your part is the worst phase. But now, when ithappened with you, unfortunately... Take yourtime to heal your broken heart... Cry as much asyou can, shout or fight but do something so thatyou can overcome that pain soon. Holding itinside you will depress you more. Share yourpains with your friends or near oneʼs. Trust methey will heal you very soon and you may get somany people who too will share their pain withyou.

We JULY 2020

TAKE YOURTIME TO HEALYOUR BROKENHEART...CRY AS MUCHAS YOU CAN,SHOUT ORFIGHT BUT DOSOMETHING SOTHAT YOU CANOVERCOMETHAT PAINSOON.

Do not STOP; Hunt for thejob till you do not get theanother

Do not stop because theprevious experience was notgreat for you. Thousands canlet you down giving youempathy but it is up to youhow you can stay confident inthat worst situation also. Iadmit that it is not all easy to wear that smilingface and confidence again and go for aninterview. But blaming yourself, others, or Godwonʼt either help you. So, donʼt give up andmany are waiting for the faithful employeeslike you. It is just that you do not have to loseTRUST and HOPE. It can bring MIRACLESto you.

Surround yourself with POSITIVITYThinking again and again where everything

went wrong and cursing yourself or blamingothers will only make you angry. Okay, thinkonce again. If you will be blessed with yourprevious job, have you taken the initiative tosearch the new one? No, because you weretoo comfortable with it. And this is where wefail to understand that we were not meant to bethere forever. God has furthermore betterplans for us but we do give up easily. So,Everything happens for a REASON. There ismuch more for all of us. It was not you whowas wrong; itʼs their loss who cannotunderstand your importance! Iam a pretty 16-year-old girl studying in class 9.There is an embarrassing situation which I am

facing. There is a girl in my class who always latcheson to me, as if we are pals which we are not. I justcannot shoo her off. The irritating part is that shehugs and even kisses me on the check often, sayingshe loves me!!

My other friends who see her this behavior say thatshe is showing lesbian tendencies. The very idearepulses me terribly…for I am very straight!! Couldthis be true? What can I do to stop her unwantedattentions? Please advise.

Adolescents are often attracted to members oftheir own sex for some time and this is due to thesudden spurt of sex hormones which flood theirbodies. Usually, this is a temporary phase and asthey reach adulthood they are very clear about theirorientation.

Since you are uncomfortable about this girlʼsbehavior, tell her frankly that you do not like to betouched in any way. If she feels offended, it cannot behelped. This is better than suffering in silence. Tellthis in a nice way, and she will understand. In allprobability, she herself does not know why she feelsthis way!!

If she stalks you, ask your other friends to surroundyou and whisk you away from her.!!

We are two college girls sharing a rented two:bedroom flat. For two years now, we are having

a very companionable relationship. Last month, forthe first time,my flat mate brought her boyfriend homeand he stayed the night in her room. Now, he does

this almost twice a week and I am very uncomfortablewith this. If our flat owner knows about this, we will beevicted in no time too. I have told her about myfeelings, but she says I have no right to interfere inher business. What can I do?

When you share a premises with another, it iswise to draw up some rules and regulations at theoutset.

If you had said that no boyfriend should beallowed night stay, it would have been easy tocomfront her. But, evidently, no such rules weremade, making your position very delicate.

If she refuses to listen to your request, you willsimply have to lump it, or leave. If you do leave theplace, she could it difficult to pay the whole rent byherself, and this could her agree to your demand.

As a last resort, you could inform your owner, butthis could result in both of you getting throw out.The best course of action is to settle the matteramicably for after all, you have been good friendsfor a long time.

My boyfriend wants to have sex, now that we aretogether for 2 years. I am not agreeable to this,

for I want to remain a virgin till I get married. He callsme an old fashioned prude, claiming no one valuesvirginity anymore. We are both 17 years old. Pleaseadvise.

You should definitely not agree to his demands, notonly because you have your stand on the subject butbecause you are both legally under aged for sexualrelations, and can get penalized by the law.

When there is no commitment, and the boy jilts thegirl for some reason of other, she feels cheated, andused. Whether one likes it or not, women areromantic and sentimental and attach a lot of emotionto intercourse, although for the man, it often, is simplya pleasurable physical act.

Intimacy could also cause infections like STDs,

AIDs, and such like. All things considered, refuse to comply and stick to

your stand even if he uses emotional blackmail tomake you succumb. It may make him abandon you,but you will feel good in your own eyes.

Ihave a problem. I am a 18-year-old girl who isdeeply in love with a 25-year-old soft ware

engineer. The issue is that I am 5”taller than him, forto my 5ʼ10”he is only 5ʼ5”. I donʼt mind the differencebut we have to face a lot of ribbing from friends, and Ican see that it hurts him. Also, although I lovewearing heeled footwear, now he does not want me todo so. Sometimes, I wonder whether our relationshipis going to be disastrous. What do you advise?

If you just look around a little, you will see that thereare many couples having taller wives, and who arevery happy too together. It all depends on yourattitude. Just ignore the teasing, which will stop whenyou stop reacting to it, anyway. It is mean to bodyshame anyone, although it is quite rampantnowadays.

Just say things like “he may be shorter but he issmarter than me”or “he says he loves looking up tome,”etc, etc, which will make your partnercomfortable.

If, however, he resents your height deeply, perhapsyou should have second thoughts about yourrelationship, as this resentment could spill into otheraspects of your life. Also, do you feel comfortableabout his putting restrictions on your choice offootwear? It is a small matter but could snowball intoa major issue.

So take your time in making this life time decision.

Researchers from the University of Oxford, incollaboration with the Royal College ofObstetricians and Gynaecologists, the

Universities of Leeds and Birmingham, Kings andImperial Colleges London, have published newresearch that suggests pregnant women are nomore likely to become ill with severe COVID-19than non-pregnant woman. However, the majorityof women who did become severely ill were intheir third trimester of pregnancy, emphasising theimportance of social distancing for this group.

Pregnant Women,At Greater Risk Of SevereCOVID-19Than Other Women

The analysis also showed that older pregnantwomen, those who were overweight or obese, andpregnant women who had pre-existing medicalproblems, such as high blood pressure anddiabetes, were more likely to be admitted tohospital with the infection. Women who wereadmitted to hospital with COVID-19 in pregnancywere less likely to smoke than a group ofcomparison pregnant women.

OTHER IMPORTANT FINDINGS FROM THESTUDY INCLUDE:

One in five babies born to mothers hospitalisedwith COVID-19 were born pre-mature and wereadmitted to a neonatal unit. One in twenty babiesborn had a positive test for COVID-19, but onlyhalf of them immediately after birth.

Sixty percent of the womenadmitted to hospital have now givenbirth, while the remaining fortypercent have ongoing pregnancies. Most women have now beendischarged home. Around one in 10women required intensive care, andsadly five women have died.

Outcomes for babies born tomothers with COVID-19 were mostlygood. Although almost one in fivewere born prematurely and wereadmitted to a neonatal unit, fewerthan twenty babies were born verypremature (when their mothers wereless than 32 weeks pregnant). One intwenty babies born had a positive testfor COVID-19, but only half of thesebabies had positive test immediatelyafter birth, suggesting thattransmission of infection from motherto baby is low.

Professor Marian Knight, Professor of Maternaland Child Population Health at the NuffieldDepartment of Population Health, University ofOxford and lead investigator for the study, said, ʻAvery small number of pregnant women do becomeseverely ill with COVID-19 and sadly somewomen have died. Our thoughts must remain withtheir families. It is concerning that more pregnantwomen from black and minority ethnic groups areadmitted with COVID-19 in pregnancy and thisneeds urgent investigation.

ʻMost pregnant women who were admitted tohospital were more than six months pregnant, which emphasises the importance of continuedsocial distancing measures in the later stages ofpregnancy. Following the current guidance aboutcareful social distancing will help preventinfection.ʼ

Iam in the ninth month of my first pregnancy. My problem is that both my nipples are

retracted. This will cause difficulty in breastfeeding my baby. Is there any way by which Ican improve the situation before delivery?

You could begin by catching the nipplebetween your thumb and forefinger and rolling itgently forwards. Repeat this exercise daily.Alternatively there is a small plastic cupavailable that has to be put between the nippleand the bra with the mouth of the cup on thenipple.

The negative pressure so created helps drawthe nipple out in some cases. If this too fails, anipple shield can be used to breast feet yourchild. You will be taught how to sterilise and useit after delivery.

Can I have an X-ray done during pregnancy?Though X-rays are best avoided during

The further the area to be X-rayed is from yourbaby the less likely is it to cause harm. In anycase the abdomen is protected by a lead shieldto avoid exposure of the baby to the rays.

Iam in the 8th month of my pregnancy. Mydoctor has asked me to perform Kegelʼs

Kegelʼs exercises make the pelvic floor moreelastic and strong so that the child can passthrough it comfortably.

This is that part of the body that holds thepelvic organs in place and is perforated by theurinary, vaginal and anal orifices. It is made ofmuscle and fibrous tissue,

Lie on the back with knees bent and feet flaton the floor. Squeeze the two buttock musclestogether.

While doing this press the thighs firmlytogether and pull up as though preventing thepassage of stool and urine. Count slowly fromone to 10. Relax to the same number of counts.Do this 10 time each three times a day.

You can do this exercise daily, even in thestanding position – while cooking, washing, standing in queues etc.

Iam three months pregnant and the elders inmy family insist that I eat for two. As it is, it is

becoming difficult to eat for one on account ofthe dyspepsia and the nausea. Please tell mewhat I should do.

One needs only 300 calories extra per dayduring pregnancy (equivalent to two-and-a-halfcups of toned milk), so the question of eating fortwo does not arise, especially if the secondʻpersonʼ is microscopic to begin with and growsto a maximum size of 3-4 kilograms.

has a calming effect on my stressed nerves.Even the nausea of pregnancy decreases whenI sit in my garden and breathe in the fresh, cleanair. Please tell me if it is advisable to continuegardening during pregnancy.

The first trimester of pregnancy is not a goodtime to indulge in your passion for gardening.Studies have shown that weed killers may causedevelopmental problems. If you are really keento continue wear rubber gloves while gardeningin areas where pesticides have been used.

Iam two months pregnant but the ultrasoundrevealed just a fluid filled sac with no baby

inside. What does this mean? Am I pregnant ornot? What should be done?

You are pregnant alright but all is not well withthe pregnancy. In all probability you have ablighted ovum. You should get the ultrasoundrepeated after two week. If no fetal node hasappeared by then the conceptus has to beaborted as it is defective. Your doctor may sendthe products of conception for karyotyping todetect chromosomal abnormalities if any.

Q A&Child Challenges

My one-and a-half-year-old daughter is saidto have delayed milestones by her doctor.

For example she never crawled and is justbeginning to walk with help. Besides, there wasa delay in the eruption of her teeth and she hasjust now begun to speak words like ʻmammaʼand ʻpapaʼ. I am a case of hypothyroidism butmy daughter has been tested negative.

Kindly let me know from the data given abovewhether my daughter is growing normally or not.If not, what measures, if any need to be taken?

Your daughter is certainly lagging behindnormal children in her milestones.Hypothyroidism could be one major reason, amenable to treatment but, as you say, herthyroid status is normal so that is one causethat has been ruled out. Other causes could beadvanced maternal age resulting in the DownʼsSyndrome which is a form of cerebral palsyleading to varying degrees of delayedmilestones; difficult/complicated delivery thatcould lead to decreased oxygen supply anddamage to the brain. Severe infections in themother during pregnancy or to the babyimmediately after delivery can also lead toretarded milestones. Nutritional deficienciescould also be a cause.

It is very important to get your daughterevaluated thoroughly as regards herdevelopmental status and slot the degree ofimpairment that could vary from mild to severe.Follow the doctorʼs instructions carefully andtake her for regular follow-ups so that

appropriate measures can be taken at the righttime.

Ihave a three-years-old son. I am unable todecide whether to go for another child or not.

The recent trend is to go for only a single child.Generally I have observed that non-workingwomen go in for a second child while workingwomen opt for only one child. Please let meknow if being an only child will affect his mentaldevelopment, though he does have a fewcousins. Please give me the merits and demeritsof each situation and guide me as you think fit.

Having no children, one child or two is purely amatter of individual choice. Each has its meritsand demerits. It is generally believed that anonly child tends to become self centered anddoes not learn the art of sharing – love, toys andeven his parents. Parents tend to give in to thedemands of an only child as they have themeans and inclination to do so, not having tosave for another. Not having known negativefeelings like rejection, sibling rivalry, not havingto work hard or fight for anything in life, he is ill-equipped to deal with the ups and downs ofadulthood. After all, how long can parents form aprotective cover around their loved one? Also,an only child, specially of working parents in anuclear family tends to be lonely and could growup to be an introvert. On the other hand if youare living in a joint family, cousins, uncles, auntsand grandparents more than make up for theabsence of siblings.

Another thing to remember is that it is good tohave brothers and sisters when one is grown upand oneʼs parents are dead and gone. One canshare oneʼs problems with siblings. They areever ready with advice, emotional/financialsupport in times of difficulties for, all said and

done, blood is thicker than water. On the otherhand we have seen brothers fighting court casesover ancestral properties and their families noteven on speaking terms with each other.

Financial constraints should not be the onlydeciding factor. The lower middle class and thepoor have the maximum number of children. Moreover giving a child love, care, attention andtime is more important that all the materialcomforts you can give to him. If you are aworking woman climbing aggressively up to thepinnacle of your career; if you think you cannotdevote enough time to your child, if youʼre not upto the ordeal of another delivery, do not rush intohaving another child just because everyone elseis advising you to do so. After all, you are theone who will have to bring him up. Moreover notall single child family children grow up to beoverbearing selfish adults used to having theirown way.

My seven years old daughter is very smartbut does not want to study. If I scold her

she takes it lightly. She gets good marks but Ifeel that she could do better. She says that shewants to stand first in class but makes no effortto do so. How should I tackle her?

You daughter is intelligent, that is why she getsgood marks without trying too hard. Do not forceher to study against her wishes. Do not imposeyour expectations on her. Let her do the bestshe can and encourage her when she does well.Donʼt make an issue out of her standing first forit will put her under unnecessary pressure andundermine her confidence. She is still too youngto be fiercely competitive. Just be firm enough tosee that she puts in regular hours of study anddoes not neglect her homework.

Iattempted suicide three times within the spanof less than two weeks. It all happened

because of my mother. It was my mumʼs birthdaywhen my brothers and I didnʼt respond to agroup text my sister sent out the previous nightabout what to do in celebration of her birthday. We all had reasons for not replying back, (work, was asleep, hated group texts, etc.) But thisdidnʼt go well with my mom. She spent hoursyelling at me and ONLY me about how hurt shefelt, how betrayed she was, how none of us trulyloved her. When my brothers would enter theroom she would speak to them calmly, but thencontinued acting as if I was the scum of theearth! She eventually calmed down (notapologizing AT ALL) for her behavior and got asurprise party (that I was forced to go to by mydad, who told her about the text in the firstplace). Even now, this hurts deeply. She mademe feel worthless, ungrateful, and like a burdento her. I wish I could tell her about this incidentso much, to show her that her constant childishoverreactions (yes, this WASNʼT an isolatedincident) almost ended the life of her youngestdaughter. And still continues to haunt saiddaughter half a year later.

The best way to deal with it is to communicatewith your mother. Have a conversation with herand tell her how you feel about her and thethings she say. Your mother is your well-wisherand so she would not do anything that may hurtyou.

Q A&My Family, My Friends and Me...

Istole money from my dad last year. Around`30000. He was visiting as he lives abroad. He

regularly asked me to buy things for him onlineto take home with him. Fair enough. Anyonewho knows him knows he has a favourite child,my older sibling. Itʼs not something he keptsecret so I grew up being used to it.

One night I heard him talking to someone onthe phone. He was telling them how my siblingwas his favourite and how he loved him more, would do anything for him no matter what thecost. He explained how he gives them anythingthey want, mostly money, and is always there tohelp them.

Something snapped. I thought about all theyears I had struggled and asked him for helponly to be told that he didnʼt have the money orcouldnʼt help me. Iʼd done nothing but love himthe way a child should. Iʼd shunned my ownmother for years because of the lies he told meabout her. He retired and went abroad when Iwas 10. He never helped my mother financiallyonce heʼd pissed off. (My mother and I have onlyrecently managed to start having a decentrelationship and she has told me the truth abouteverything!)..anyway, after the few onlinepurchases Iʼd made for him, his card detailswere stored on my PayPal and that was that.Once heʼd gone back home, I started buyinganything and everything I could. It started out aslittle cheap things, food, clothes. Then bigger, more expensive things for my home. It was easy– and I was so angry. After a few months, thecard payments kept getting declined so Istopped. A couple weeks later, he phoned measking if I knew anything about it. I denied it.Then I didnʼt hear from him again. Instead Iheard from the favourite child who startedthreatening me with the police and such. I never

admitted it or denied it. Just agreed to pay it backmonthly. Which I did/am doing. Do I feel bad?No. Which is awful. I just feel like he deserved it.I feel shitty in general for stealing because I knowthat is not who I am! Iʼve still got around Rs10000to pay back. I quit paying a couple months agoas money is tight. I heard today that heʼs back inthe country. I guess thatʼs why this is at theforefront of my mind. I might get the book handedto me soon knowing him and my sibling. My onlyregret would be if this messed up my life now. Ihave a kid and things have been going prettygreat recently. I have no idea what to do.

What you did was definitely wrong. First youneed to pay off all the taken money and then donot repeat this stealing. Your kid looks upon youand you will not want him to learn such thingsfrom you.

Iʼm 30, still living with my parents for economicreasons. We have a good relationship. All my

life they have been supportive and loving, withthe ups and downs. We arenʼt perfect, we argueand squabble and make up and move on.

It is absolutely aright if you are living with yourparents. Every family has ups and downs butdealing with it and moving on is what a perfectfamily is. It is normal to have issues in life. Justgo with the flow.

I am depressed. I hate being a mom. I also hatebeing a stay at home mom too!

It is natural to feel that way. Basically, youdonʼt hate your kid, its just that you get boreddoing the same thing every day. Indulge yourselfin a hobby or join a club. Do what makes youhappy and liberated. When your kid will grow upa little, join a job and you will feel blessed forbeing a working woman.

An apt definition. By Ritu Kamra Kumar

Home is Wherethe Heart is

Standing in the twilight of life, memories crowdupon us a like tide, of the home with woodenbeam ceiling, rough stone floor and their green

fences, where we stayed together, embracing oneanother in all the weathers. Yes, the home was inNilokheri, a nondescript place in Haryana, rented ona princely sum where my father was a professor inthe Government Polytechnic and my mother, aheadmistress in school. But my story is not aboutʻhouseʼ but ʻhomeʼ where we were at home. Threesides of a triangle we sisters were, always on anadventurous spree. Now I feel, how time flies withoutdecree! Then from Nilokheri, we shifted to Ambala. InAmbala, we moved from our rented house toanother, till we had our own home, an emblem of ouridentity. Moving from one house to another wasalways a miserable affair.

Then I got married and travelled back and forthbetween parental home and marital home which isalways a wrench in a womanʼs life. So graduallydefinition of home got expanded. ʻIn-laws homeʼ, ʻmyhomeʼ and then ʻour homeʼ in Yamuna Nagar. Ithought finally, I have arrived at a place where Iʼll restas long as I live. It was ʻour homeʼ. But how wrong Iwas! Because, soon, my son went for higher studies, then to join his job in another city. The definition of

We JULY 2020

home expanded beyond my city and I wanted to beeverywhere soon. They say home is where the heartis – but now I realise my heart is in not in one place. What does home mean for me now? Is home theplace in Nilokheri where I was born? Is it Ambalawhere I studied and spaces teemed with our heartfeltwhoops, fun and frolic? Is it Yamuna Nagar where Ihave settled peacefully? Is it Delhi where my sonlives? Is it where I am happiest or where I am mostemotionally connected? Does home means beingwith people whom I love most, can depend on most?

Now I have an epiphany ʻhomeʼ that keeps onexpanding and is a comprehensive term to include allwe love and care for. We leave bits of our hearts withall those we touch with love and passion. So beingʻat homeʼ is more a metaphor than a physicalconstruct. Home is where you feel safe, secure, happy in harmony with the ambience and dear oneswith no fear of rejection or being judged. So you canfeel ʻat homeʼ or ʻhomelessʼ irrespective of where youare physically. Being at home is being connected tothe place and people, aura and audacity, love andlaughter – i.e. to be mindful. Maya Angelou rightlysaid, ʻThe ache for a home lives in all of us, the saferplace where we can go as we are and not to bequestioned.” That is why I am at home when I am inmy college where I have been teaching since 1987,just as a painter is at home with brush in hand, or awriter with pen and pad. Parents are at home withtheir children residing in foreign lands. The differencebetween a ʻhouseʼ and ʻhomeʼ can be best explainedby an anecdote my father once told me. He saidwhen they came to India from Pakistan afterpartition, they did not have a place to call home butas a kid whenever someone sympathised with themʻfor not having homeʼ he used to reply naively “Wejust donʼt have a house to put it into!” Well, saidRober Frost “Home is the place where when youhave to go there, they have to take you in.”

Is It Love OrJust Sex?Here’s How to KnowThe big question. By Mallika Chugh

The phase of attraction is alwaysconfusing whether the man you lovereally loves you back and if he does

whether he just wants to have a casualfling with you. For different couples ittakes a different time period to name their“relationship”.

There are a few tips which can helpguide you better for the roller- coaster ride

of your relationship:Body language:

People in love tend totouch each other. Themain thing is that one hasto observe the way thepartner is touching. Aperson can express hisadmiration toward youwithout always trying totouch you intimately.

One can even see if theperson is bending or justtouching your lower back. This can be assumed asa sense of support andlove from your partner.

However, there is a redalert if your partner only tries to be close to youintimately because then he is definitely there forsex only.

You enjoy things together: The best way fora successful relationship is mental compatibility. You both will have similar interests and wouldenjoy similar things like going out together, watching movies and partying. This wouldreduce the effort intake and would allow you tohave fun naturally and casually.

However, if you feel your partner is justobliging you with events even when does notreally enjoy them that could raise a little alarmthat he is there for sexual pleasures only as hedoesnʼt want to disappoint you which would stopthe sexual desires from being fulfilled.

His family and friends know about you: Thefact that his family and friends know about youmake it a serious relationship as no one would

like to create a mess within theirfamily and friends circle abouttheir partner till the time they areserious about you. He will onlymake you meet family andfriends if he truly loves you andplans a future with you becausehe wants you to be comfortablewith the family and friends.

Staying over does not meansex: Initially all couples areinvolved physically to exploretheir physical compatibility witheach other. Later, once therelationship is more matured anddeveloped, staying together doesnot necessarily mean sex forboth of you. However, if yourpartner tends to just stay over forsex then there is somethinggrossly wrong with yourrelationship and once should seethe bleak future.

Plan your future as “we”: When couples tendto be serious they tend to plan their future as wellrather than having individualistic future goals. Notto confuse this with the fact that if one partner hashis own personal ambitions towards his career iswrong. However, he should be consideratetowards your goals and desires as well.

He or she takes time out for you: If anindividual takes out time especially for you thendefinitely he does love you a lot. He has aspecial place for you in his heart and that can beone of the major determinants as well if he islooking for a serious relationship with you.
