Dear Participating Delegations and Honourable Guests,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our country Kuwait, on behalf of KNPC management and staff. I wish also to assert that this gathering will be an important opportunity for valuable exchange of expertise and ideas that will add value to the reliability and smooth operation ability of many plants in the region including KNPC refineries.

As you know, KNPC is running three oil refineries with a daily throughput of around 936,000 barrels a day. In that sense, it is responsible for the manufacturing of approximately 40% of Kuwait hydrocarbon resources. This mandate will be much bigger as the company has started implementation of the two-mega projects, the Clean Fuels Project and the new Al-Zour Refinery with a capital investment of more than 30 billion US dollars. They will raise our refining capacity to 1.4 million BPD. Both projects are expected to go on stream in 2018 and 2019 respectively. KNPC role as a major player in the oil and gas industry will be then taken to new spheres.

We attach great importance to maintenance as the only tool to guarantee reliability that ensures the highest level of productivity. The main purpose of regular maintenance is to ensure that equipment required for production is operating at 100% efficiency at all times. Equipment breakdown does not affect production only, but it also affects quality of the products which may lead to losing important customers and markets. However even more seriously, it may endanger the safety of the plant workers. The cost of maintenance should by no means become a daunting factor for timely addressing the wear of machinery because no matter how high the cost is, it will be small compared to the cost of a major breakdown that may lead to total halt of production. In fact, recent surveys showed that actual cost of machine breakdown could be within the range of 15 times higher than maintenance cost.

I wish to express thanks to the speakers and other attendees for their interest and participation. Wishing this conference all the best of success and to our honourable guest a happy stay in Kuwait.

Warm regards,

Mohammed Saud Alshammari, Manager – Maintenance, Shuaiba Refinery, KNPC

Post-Conference Workshop Wednesday, 10 February 2016

09:00 - 12:00 Preventing plant turnaround failure to avoid production losses by optimising planning

With rigid budgets and stringent timelines to execute a turnaround programme, engineers and the senior management cannot afford to have a failure as this would impact the production directly. Most of the plants that run at 50-70% of capacity when a turnaround is in place and the deficit is then overcome with improved production, thus putting an additional pressure on operations. This workshop will help you understand the most important aspects of preventing failures while a turnaround is being executed.

Attend this workshop to: Learn how to improve the operator-contractor relationship and how this can help avoid failure of a turnaround Implement a quality assurance programme to avoid consequences of failure Build a strong and capable team of turnaround professionals and involving routine maintenance, inspection, operations and HSE departments

Workshop leader: Michael Turner, Independent STO Consultant & Global Maintenance Expert, Former Oryx GTL, Qatar / UK

Michael Turner is a highly experienced Business Leader and an STO Specialist. He started his career as a Metallurgist with General Motors Engineering and has since experienced a wide range of sectors over 31 years including projects in light and heavy engineering, marine, chemical process and energy sectors. Michael has extensive experience in oil and gas, delivering large complex projects with international and national oil companies. This has included framing, preparing and delivering shutdowns in excess of 2 million man hours. His assignments have included significant time spent in Europe, USA, India, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and the UAE.

12:00 Networking lunch

13:00 - 16:00 Maintaining safety and integrity using preventive maintenance mechanisms

Preventive maintenance philosophy is extremely important considering today’s low oil prices. It’s essential that oil, gas and petrochemical companies focus on teamwork with enhanced coordination between production, maintenance, inspection and operations to improve their round-the-clock maintenance strategy as any downtime can result in millions of dollars lost in revenue.

Attend this workshop to: Learn how to implement low-cost preventive maintenance activities during a planned shutdown Understand how to predict equipment that needs immediate servicing based on condition assessment and root cause analysis of previous equipment history Ensure equipment parts are serviced at workshops before the actual preventive maintenance plan to ensure the preventive maintenance programme runs as per schedule

Workshop leader: Csaba Feher, Group Maintenance Advisor, MOL, Hungary

Csaba Feher is the Group Maintenance Expert at MOL Hungary with responsibility for unifying the maintenance area of group flagships such as routine maintenance/turnarounds based on reliability and predictive strategies, CMMS and external systems utilisation. Prior to joining MOL, Csaba worked as Maintenance Central Expert, Instrumental Engineer, Project Manager, CMMS consultant at several companies including MOL oil refineries, Slovnaft, INA, E.ON oil service company. Notable is his 16 years as expert for MOL in Maintenance and CMMS area. Csaba received his degree as a Technical Manager from Denis Gabor High School in 2002 and as Project Manager from IPMA in 2013.
