GREETINGS,

In life, timing is everything. For students embarking upon the next stage in their lives, time is of the essence. They seek colleges that provide academic breath, yet

allow them to focus and achieve their academic goals quickly and affordably.

For community colleges, offering the right programs at the right time is critical. It’s why MCC along with the rest of the Maricopa Community College District,

continues to grow and evolve, adding program areas, degrees and certificates to meet the ever-changing needs our students and the world.

For MCC, there is no time like the present. Across our campuses and further afield, the College grows and adapts and strives to meet our mission of excelling in

teaching, learning, and empowering individuals to succeed in our local and global community.

As always, we are forever thankful to the alumni and donors who play such a critical role in the ongoing success of this great College. Your support has and will

touch countless lives — not just on campus, but around the world.

Thank you.

PETER BROWN Biology Residential Faculty: Life Science Department, at MCC since 1995

Peter is especially proud of his support of the Life Science Department’s Scholarship Fund. “It’s an affirmation to the student that what they’ve done, all their hard work and everything they’ve accomplished, that someone sees the value in them. Hopefully that honor will inspire them to go forward and work hard and be successful in their careers and in what they do with their lives.”

LEIGH ANN COUNSELLER Staff: Center for Community & Civic Engagement, at MCC since 2011

In addition to contributions, Leigh Ann helps individual students by buying them lunch, a bus ticket, or helping them buy books. “You have to look at what your position is at this college and say ‘These students are going to succeed and I may need to help them to do that.’ And then you watch them in the future. You have the feeling of really making a difference in their lives. People should definitely contribute. You never know whose life you’re going to change.”

STEVE CORICH Former Police Commander at MCC, retired from MCC with over 14 years of service

Steve gives to the Administration of Justice Studies Scholarship. “I think those of us who are working in education realize the importance of giving back. And giving back in a format where we can provide educational opportunities for those who otherwise might not be able to achieve it.”

DWAYNE MCINTOSH Service Faculty: Counseling Department, at MCC since 2000

Dwayne was born and raised in Tucson and has nine siblings. Out of all of them, he is the only one to graduate from high school let alone go to college. He started his college years at a community college, where the hardest obstacle that he faced was finding funding. He believes that helping students financially gives them confidence that someone believes in them. “To be able to give to the Student Scholarship Fund is really, really important to me. Most of the type of students that we see here are the type of student I was.”

DAPHNE ROSSITER Chair: Mathematics & Computer Science, at MCC since 1991

Daphne contributes to the Student Scholarship Fund. “If everyone just gives a little tiny bit out of each paycheck or one time a semester or one time a year, if we all just help a little bit, it turns into this very large amount and it will help so many students. So I would just say, ‘Start now and just continue as long as you are here.’”

When Jennifer Duff graduated with an associate degree in fashion merchandising from Mesa Community College in the late ‘70s, she never could have imagined where her career path would take her. After a few successful years in the fashion industry, she switched gears to follow another passion—fishing.

After she won her first competition, Duff was hooked. By 1986, her hobby became a full-time career and soon she was invited to live in Japan for a year to compete and promote for Japan’s Bass Tournament Association.

In 1990 she returned home and started an import/export business, Jef International, Inc. (named after the nickname given to her by fellow male anglers). Japanese distributors of sport fishing tackle were her first customers. She followed up on an opportunity to produce the first high-end Japanese lure in the U.S. market, the Rico, one of the topwater lures most in demand by tournament pros and sport fishermen around the world. Now she is the owner of that company, Lobina Lures, a division of Jef International, Inc.

“My education at MCC and experience as a buyer in the fashion world gave me the tools to be an entrepreneur and a leader in community endeavors,” Duff said.

Duff, a native of Mesa and a Mesa High School alumna, said she originally decided to attend MCC because it was THE education “go to” then (and now). It was an affordable and approachable transition after high school. She found the instructors were very engaged and eager to make her experience a successful one. One class she did not enjoy, however, was accounting.

“It’s funny, looking back, I struggled in my accounting class at MCC and, at the time, I didn’t see the value of those lessons,” Duff said. “Later, when I started my own business, the knowledge kicked in and I’m considered to be quite sharp in accounting! You never know how and when education comes into play.”

In addition to running her companies, Duff enjoys giving back as a community organizer, volunteer and nonprofit board member. She is a member of MCC’s Development Board, the City of Mesa’s Planning and Zoning Board and the Mesa Rotary. She is co-founder of Retail, Arts, Innovation & Livability (R.A.I.L.) and active in the Mesa Chamber of Commerce. She is a former board chair and current volunteer for the i.d.e.a. Museum.

Duff was inducted into the MCC Hall of Fame for Alumni Achievement in 2015 and will be the graduation speaker at MCC’s 2017 Commencement.

Duff’s role as an active community member also gives her a perspective of the larger scale impact MCC has had on the community.

The future of MCC?

“It’s absolutely still the number one choice for higher education, whether it’s a first experience or a later learning opportunity,” Duff said. “In the future, MCC will have an even tighter alliance with high schools and employers to develop curriculum directly tied to the workforce. We must train students to reinvent and innovate. Employers can recruit directly from MCC and have access to students who are trained to fit into the current economy. ”

For most of us, the phrase “path of least resistance” probably does not include studying Psychology at a major university and advanced courses in science and math on the way to Optometry school.

But most of us are not MCC alumnus Dr. James Abbott, who came home to open his Optometry practice in Mesa 35 years ago.

“I started at MCC in the summer of 1972, and received my Associate of Arts degree in 1974,” James said. He transferred to the University of Arizona, and graduated in December of 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. “I was more interested in psychology as a major, and I picked up my chemistry, math and other sciences at MCC,” he said. “The way I went was the path of least resistance: I acquired my pre-requisites for optometry school at MCC.” James studied at the Southern California College of Optometry from 1976 to 1980, graduating with a Doctor of Optometry degree.

James received his full Optometry license in September of 1980. “I’ve been back in Mesa the whole time,” he said of his time since then. “I grew up here and still have family ties here, and after I graduated it was still a nice place to come back to. I’ve built a

successful practice here over the last 35 years.”

James said his time in MCC’s student government, men’s honorary, and marching band were his fondest memories. “Working with administrators and learning about various issues that they wanted student input on was fascinating,” he said of his work in student government.

Calling MCC a “good stepping stone to higher education,” James said he recognized the advantages of staying home to pursue his education. “I wanted to be near home rather than face the total expenses of living on a campus somewhere else,” he said. “MCC gave me an opportunity to start college and still not have as many expenses. My goal was to go beyond to the university, but for some students two years is enough, depending on their field.”

Regarding MCC’s future, James said working with local business and industry to ensure that graduates have real world skills will continue to be important. “I’d like to see the college expand their communication with business and industry,” he said. “We need to look ahead and not just respond as issues appear, and we can’t anticipate some of those changes without communicating with the real world outside and seeing what the workforce needs.”

Though other family members went straight to a university from high school, James is still glad he started at MCC.

“For me, MCC was a good choice,” he said. “My wife Linda is also an MCC alum. My son Jay went straight to the UofA and did well, but it’s not for everybody. I’m very positive about my experience at MCC. They definitely offer a bridge for those students who have a need to be home for economic reasons, or they can only attend part-time. When I was a student the night school at MCC had as many students as day classes, so it is an important part of the community.”

Nikelle Mackey, a Mesa Community College Art student, was recently awarded the Presidential Scholarship at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL. She was ranked in the top one percent and selected out of 1,400 total applicants.

The Presidential Scholarship, the highest award given at Ringling College, will provide Nikelle with a total of $80,000 based on a four year degree plan. The scholarship will cover two-thirds of the cost of her education.

“Words can’t describe it. I never thought I would get accepted or be awarded this type of scholarship,” commented Nikelle.

Beginning in the fourth grade, Nikelle was homeschooled until she graduated high school. She began taking classes at MCC in 2008, participating in early college courses while home schooling. She recalls her first class at MCC was a Japanese language course. She also took classes at Central Arizona College while in high school.

Nikelle stated, “The early college courses and home schooling were grueling but it prepared me for the expectations placed on College students and made it an easier transition for me.”

While at MCC, she has not only excelled as an art student but was also involved as a Phi Beta Kappa member and served as a past Vice President of Service. In addition, she dedicates numerous hours volunteering time in her community.

Nikelle already has an Associate of Arts degree, which she earned in May 2011 from MCC. This spring, she will graduate with an Associate of Applied Science in Digital Arts with Distinction and Certificate of Completion in Digital Illustration.

She states, “I am looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life. MCC has given me the boost needed and laid out opportunities for me. Now I can move forward. Without MCC, I couldn’t have gotten this far. I will be sad to leave one of the best art programs and its teachers here, but I want to make them proud.”

Nikelle will begin classes this fall at Ringling College of Art and Design, majoring in Business Art and Design. The College is well known for its connections to DreamWorks, Disney, Pixar, MTV, and others.

Nikelle hopes to one day start her own business working with talented artists, providing opportunities to help them advance while promoting art and design.

Mike Brown, the coach who guided the Cleveland Cavaliers to the 2007 NBA Finals, got his start at Mesa Community College.

Brown attended MCC from 1988-90, playing basketball under former MCC coach Tom Bennett. Brown went on to graduate from the University of San Diego with a business degree in 1992 and began his NBA career with the Denver Nuggets. Over the next decade he helped coach several teams, including the Washington Wizards, the San Antonio Spurs, and the Indiana Pacers. He was hired as head coach of the Cavaliers in 2005.

Brown said he remembers how friendly the MCC campus was and it was there he met a very important person who greatly influenced his life—coach Tom Bennett.

“I struck up a great friendship with Tom Bennett,” Brown said. “He coached me and helped me mature into a man.”

The two friends stay in touch and during the 2007 NBA Finals, Brown flew Bennett to watch one of the games.

“It was a small way to say thanks,” Brown said.

Bennett remembers Brown’s incredible dedication and focus when he was a student at MCC.

“Virtually every day he was at MCC he did extra practice,” Bennett said. “He’s still the same. When I visited with him several years ago, we sat at 2 a.m. eating cereal and watching NBA films.”

Although Brown was disappointed that the Cavaliers’ first trip to the NBA finals was a short one—the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Cavaliers 4-0—he considers the series a positive experience.

“How high we finish is always a journey,” Brown said. “It was fun. I was proud of our guys and our organization. If we get there in the future, we’ll be even better prepared.”

Brown and his wife, Carolyn, are actively involved in community charity work in Cleveland, where they are raising their two sons, Elijah and Cameron.

Bennett said Brown is just great with both personal and professional relationships.

“He is where he is today because of the quality person he is,” Bennett said. “It’s cool to see someone like him with such good qualities succeed.”

DONOR ANNUAL REPORT | 2016

Fortunately, no one needs to rely on the “will” made by their state. By taking the time to make a valid will, trust, or other arrangements such as life insurance and retirement beneficiary designations or joint ownership of assets, you can decide who will receive your property. Steps can also be taken to reduce expenses and speed up the process of distributing your property. Your estate plans, unlike state laws, can provide for relatives unequally if you wish. Some may have greater needs than others. Friends and charitable organizations can also be remembered.

In some cases, the failure to adequately plan can result in unnecessarily large portions of assets being used to pay gift or estate taxes. A carefully drafted will or living trust can help in planning for taxes that may be due. Your advisors can help you determine what your taxes might be and plan accordingly.

You may decide to include charitable gifts in your estate plans. If you wish to do so, be sure to use the correct legal name of the intended beneficiary. You might leave a certain amount, a percent of your assets, a specific asset, or simply “what’s left” after love ones have been adequately provided for.

Begin by making a list of the persons in your life, the properties you own, the plans you would like to see implemented, and the advisors you trust to assist you as you plan. Then, contact an attorney to have your plans put in proper legal form, as “do-it-yourself” wills may not be valid. The cost is generally reasonable and estate planning can be a rewarding experience. Tremendous flexibility is possible when you decide to let your will be known.
