By Doug LarsonReaders of The Blue Press are probably some of

the most tuned-in people in the modern gun cul-ture, but not all – especially those who have notbeen involved long – know what a barbeque gunis. Stories about the origins vary, but in general, abarbeque gun is a handgun that is usually not car-ried everyday and is something out of the ordi-nary. Most often, a barbeque gun is especiallygood looking and sports characteristics that makeit stand out as a special gun.

Most in the gun culture agree that the traditionstarted many years ago down on the US-Mexicoborder, probably in Texas, which has a long tradi-tion of social occasions built around a barbeque.Ranch owners or hands, law-enforcement officersand others would come to those barbeques wear-ing their best clothes and carrying a barbequegun. It was a special occasion, so people wantedto look their best, and wearing a special gun, usu-ally carried in a holster reserved for dressy occa-sions, was just part of the fun.

Today, the tradition lives on, but sadly, thesocial events where one can carry a gun openly

are not as common as they used to be. But whywait for a special occasion? Some people just likethe idea of owning a functional work of art, and awell-made barbeque gun is truly a work of art.While not every gunsmith can make one, Repub-lic Forge can, and these guns truly stand apartfrom the crowd.

So just what makes Republic Forge 1911s spe-cial? To find out, we will look at the model RO431Recon Long Slide. This one happens to be cham-bered in 9mm, but other chamberings are avail-able. The sample gun has a retail price of $5,620,but a customer can spend more or less dependingon his or her desires and pocketbook weight.

Republic Forge (republicforge.com) makes cus-tom guns with features selected by the customer.Options are listed on the website where the guncan be “built.” But if a feature is not listed, Repub-lic Forge will work with the customer to build thegun to the buyer’s specifications. Before work isstarted on any custom gun, someone from Repub-lic Forge has a conversation with the customer sothat there is no mistake about what the customerwants. Only after that conversation is work begun.

RepublicForge Recon Long Slide 1911the Epitome of Barbeque Guns?

All Republic Forge guns are hand-fitted 1911swith parts made to Republic Forge standards. Nometal injection molded or cast parts are used andeverything is machined from tough tool steel. Forexample, Republic Forge sights are made of S7tool steel, which is shock resistant and wears well.Slides and frames are manufactured from 4140steel, which contains chromium, molybdenumand manganese, making it tough and resistant tofatigue, abrasion and impact.

And these guns are tightly fitted, perhaps sotight that they may not be the best choice for aserious fighting gun. Many will tell you that if agun is fitted too tightly, dirt and debris can moreeasily stop the gun from functioning, somethingthat is not acceptable in a gunfight. But BobMaw, President of Republic Forge, disagrees withthat view and says that a properly fit gun withsmall tolerances does not allow debris and dirt toget into the working parts in the first place. Hehas a point, so it’s up to the customer to make adecision. However, after discussing a number ofthings with Maw, it appears that his number oneconcern is customer satisfaction. So I’ll bet if thecustomer asked for slightly more tolerances inkey areas, Republic Forge would honor the cus-tomer’s request.

To get acquainted with Republic Forge 1911s,at a recent writer’s event held at Gunsite(gunsite.com), I shot a Republic Forge 1911 exten-sively. That gun had checkering on the front andback straps that was so fine and sharp, it left littlepuncture marks on my hand. While fine checker-ing shows the skill of the gunsmith and is very slipresistant, if it is too sharp, it abrades skin and canactually draw blood after the many draws a stu-dent makes in a five-day Gunsite class. But inkeeping with Maw’s commitment to customer sat-isfaction, Republic Forge offers other grip treat-ments that are less abrasive.

Bobby Tyler of Tyler Gun Works (tylergun-works.com) located in Texas does the metal fin-ishing for Republic Forge. And Tyler is a geniuswith metal finishes, something that is difficult andhas a steep learning curve. Tyler specializes incolor case hardening, although he offers a num-ber of other finishes as well. The test gun’s framewas beautifully color case hardened by Tyler andit blended well with the highly polished bluedslide. Again, the customer specifies the finishwanted and a number of options, as well asengraving, are available.

One of the stand out features of the test gun isthe stocks or grips which are made of petrifiedmammoth ivory. The material is about 8,000 to10,000 years old and is extremely rare, whichadds to the cost of the gun. Although other stocksare offered, it would be hard to pass up the beauti-ful natural blue colors sported by these particularmammoth stocks.

Another feature of the test gun is the long slide,which is one inch longer than the standard Gov-ernment 1911 slide. That makes for a 6 inchinstead of 5 inch long barrel. Why a longer barrel?If you have never fired one, you owe it to yourselfto try it. Not only does the longer slide provide alonger sight radius making it easier to aim, but theadded mass at the front really helps reduce feltrecoil and muzzle flip. It is very noticeable. The9mm chambering and the long slide make recoilextremely light and pleasant.

This is an accurate gun, capable of better accu-racy than I could wring out of it. The best groupsoff a bench rest at 25 yards were about 1.5 inches,but a younger shooter with better eyes couldundoubtedly get better results. And during testingthere were no malfunctions of any kind.

Not many can afford a finely crafted 1911 that catches the eye like thisRepublic Forge Recon Long Slide in 9mm, but for those who can – orare willing to save until they can – there is a certain satisfaction in

ownership. The rare mammoth stocks are very appealing, and the longslide combined with the 9mm chambering dramatically reduces feltrecoil making the gun not only attractive, but also easy to shoot.

Dillon’s RL 550 has long worn the title of “TheWorld’s Most Versatile Progressive Reloader,” and

stripping it down to its most basic form – Dillon’s BL(Basic Loader) 550 – adds a whole new dimension ofversatility for the shooter/hunter who needs to feedseveral rifles.

The BL 550 is essentially an RL 550 without the auto-matic priming and powder systems. Capable of loadingover 160 calibers – just like the RL 550 – it uses anymanufacturer’s standard 7/8” x 14 reloading dies. It’spriced comparably with other manufacturers’ turretpresses; yet unlike them, it’s fully upgradeable to Dillon’sProgressive RL 550 loader!

The interchangeable toolhead (Page 15) makes itquick, easy and inexpensive to change calibers. Forexample, if you load .30-06 for elk, .243 for deer and.22-250 for coyotes, you don’t even have to change theshellplate. You simply pull two pins and swap the tool-head with your .30-06 dies to another toolhead withyour .22-250 or .243 dies in less than 30 seconds! Theadditional toolheads are $26.95 each, or $24.95 each ifyou buy three or more – if you load for several rifles it’s ano-brainer! Once you get your dies adjusted, you’llnever have to re-set them.

CV-2001 – The Industry Standard Dillon’s CV-2001 Vibratory Case Cleaner is one of

the largest in the industry. Its 12-1/2 quart bowl capacitywill allow you to polish up to 1,300 .38/.357 or 550.30-06 cases per hour.

Not only is our capacity greater than most, but ourmotor is also larger in horsepower, internally cooled,thermally protected, and turns on precision ball bear-ings. This is no “hobby” machine!

The bowl and base are constructed of 7/32” thickinjection molded high-strength polypropylene which isimpact and abrasion resistant.

Case/Media SeparatorsAfter we sold thousands of our famous first genera-

tion FL-2000 case cleaners, customers who had pur-chased them began asking us to address the problem ofseparating the cleaned and polished brass from thecleaning media.

We knew from the beginning that the simplestmethod of separating would be a rotating squirrel cage,but we had to find a design we could manufacture eco-nomically. Our problem was that it had to be BIG – bigenough to handle the entire load of the FL-2000 seriescase cleaners.

The solution was an injection molded reversible part.Simple, and it works great. Ourdevice is large, 10” x 14”, and willhold more than 1,600 .38 Specialcases. It sits on a large media col-lection tub that measures 18” x 22”.The tub keeps the mess off the floorand bench.

It’s fast – so fast it will removemedia from 1500 rounds of .223brass in a matter of seconds.

Limited Work Space?Dillon’s introducing the new CV-750 heavy duty

Vibratory Case Cleaner for those with limited space. Thisnew case cleaner uses the same motor as the CV-2001and is every bit as tough – just more compact. To

accompany the CV-750, the CM-500 does the same jobas the larger CM-2000 Case/Media Separator; and, likethe CV-750, handles just about half the capacity of thelarger unit.

Sizing/Depriming DieOur sizing/depriming dies feature a unique “floating

decap assembly” with a snap spring that throws thespent primer off the pin and eliminates the problem ofprimer “draw back” that often occurs when decappingmilitary brass. The primary feature of Dillon’s size diedesign – the long, tapered carbide ring with a radiusedopening – remains unchanged.

That radiused opening, and its importance to progres-sive reloading, is one of the reasons why our seat andcrimp dies are better. We found a way of manufacturingthese dies that has enabled us to make the lead-in radiuseven bigger! The bigger radius makes progressive loadingwith our equipment even smoother – but that’s still onlya part of the story.

Bullet Seating DieOur quick-disassembly seat die allows the user to dis-

assemble and clean the seat die without losing adjust-ment. In this manner, bullet lube and shavings can bequickly removed from the die, thereby guaranteeing aconstant seating depth. We’ve incorporated a “flip-flop”seating stem and a clip that enables you to remove thedie insert and change the seating stem from round noseto semi-wadcutter without unscrewing a seating stem outof the die body. We’ve always included both types ofseating stems, but the new double-ended design makes ita simple matter to remove a pin, reverse the seatingstem, make any minor seating depth adjustments thatmay be necessary and go on loading in a fraction of thetime it used to take.

Crimp DieWe’ve made it easy for you to remove the die insert

for cleaning without having to change the critical crimpadjustment. Once your crimp die is set for the properamount of crimp, you’ll never have to change it. This isespecially good news for all of you who load lead bul-lets! Before, you had to unscrew the die from the tool-head and disassemble the die in order to remove anybullet lube or lead residue. Then, you had to start fromsquare one to re-adjust the crimp. Those days are over.All you have to do now is pop a clip and the die insertdrops into your hand for cleaning.

Sizing/Depriming DieThe sizing/depriming die is full-length, to minimum

tolerances, sizing cases down to function in semi- andfull-automatic firearms. We strongly suggest that a head-space case gage be used to correctly adjust the size die.

For high volume users, such as commercial reload-ers, law enforcement agencies, and high power orservice rifle competitors, we also offer .223 and .308die sets with a full-length carbide sizing die. Lubrica-tion is still required, but the increased scratch resist-ance and die longevity of carbide are of great benefitto these groups of users.

The depriming assembly includes a carbide expanderball for “squeak-free,” effortless neck expansion. Thisexpander ball is located in the middle of the deprimingstem to take advantage of superior initial leverage foreasier extraction.

In the event of a stuck case, the design of the deprim-ing assembly allows it to function as a stuck caseremover.

Bullet Seating DieOur bullet seating die is internally designed to keep

the bullet straight throughout the seating process. Onceproperly adjusted, the only measurable runout will bethat which is inherent in the bullet.

Taper Crimp DieThe taper crimp die is also specially configured to

center both the case neck and the case body, therebyaligning the entire cartridge for a more uniform crimp.Dillon Rifle Dies are designed to meet the more rigidrequirements for both accuracy and precision demandedby today’s marksman.

Reviewed by Peter CarolineOn the first day of the 2008 SHOT Show in Las

Vegas, I stopped by the Ruger booth. It wascrowded, as usual. Most of the crowd was packedaround one new handgun on display. I got in line,and finally was able to check out the miniscule.380 ACP pocket pistol that was drawing all theattention. Ruger’s LCP (Lightweight Compact Pis-tol) was the hit of the Show, and the folks at Rugerinformed me that their planned first year’s produc-tion was sold out on the first day! Now, it’s not likethis was a revolutionary new caliber or concept.The .380 ACP cartridge had been around for near-ly a century, and there were numerous easily con-cealable pistols…Kel-Tec, North American Armsand Seecamp, et al…in that caliber. It may well bethat the entry of Ruger into that category gave thewhole genre a new validity. Shortly afterward,Kahr, Taurus and SIG followed with their ownmini-.380 iterations. There was even a short-livedMicro Desert Eagle in that caliber. The LCPreceived some notable press in 2010 when Texas’sthen-Governor, Rick Perry, shot a coyote with hislaser-equipped LCP.

Moving forward 10 years, in September of2018, Ruger announced the introduction of a 10thAnniversary Limited Edition LCP. I visited theRuger booth at the 2019 SHOT Show, but theydidn’t have one on display. They suggested that Icheck at several of their distributors’ booths. Noluck there, either. When I got home from theshow, I ordered one from Lipsey’s, a Ruger distrib-utor and always a great source for interestingRuger variations.

The 10th Anniversary LCP is easily distinguish-able from the original. It features a stainless steel

slide with both forward and rear cocking serra-tions in a chevron pattern, an aluminum skele-tonized trigger and special “Tenth Anniversary”laser engraving. One very welcome improvementis a set of fixed sights that are actually usable; theoriginal LCP sights were very subtle, to put it mild-ly. In all other respects, the 10th Anniversary ver-sion is identical to the original: 6+1 capacity,2.75” barrel, black high-performance glass-fillednylon grip frame, 5.16 length, 3.6” height, 0.8”width, 9.6 oz. weight. I’m delighted to say, it doesnot have a magazine disconnect safety. The pistolcomes with both a finger grip extension floorplatefor the magazine, in addition to the standard floor-plate, a cable lock and an ambidextrous pocketholster. The manual (always read the manual!) isquite clear and well detailed.

I took the new LCP out to a makeshift shootingarea in the desert and set up an adhesive-backed5” target at 10 yards. Shooting offhand with amixed bag of loads, both FMJ and JHP, I couldreliably stay on the target with every shot. Thisduplicated the results I had obtained nearly 11years earlier. As might be expected from a gunwith that combination of caliber, size and weight,it is not a fun little plinker. It is, however, eminent-ly suited to situations where recoil is the least ofyour worries.

Back in 2008, the original LCP had an MSRP of$330. The MSRP of today’s 10th AnniversaryModel is $299, with real world prices $70-90 less.Who says there are no more real bargains?!

Severalexternal anecdotesseemed to have impact:6,000 inner-city murdersfor the past few years butvirtually no murder trials– “Well that ain’t right,”he admits, and it’s notexactly a gun thing. Weendure two-thirds of allgun-related deaths assuicides, a medical issuegetting inadequate med-ical attention (and he’s a doctor, OK, this raiseshis eyebrows). But he remains clinging to a hopethat mandatory gizmos to stop guns from firingwill be a solution. Later it occurs to me, he hasclassic “Ungun Disease” – guns are OK as long asthey don’t work.

I reach a breaking point, ready to give up, so Ido. OK, Doc, let’s say you get all your wishes,every “bad” gun is removed, Americans are onlyleft with, well, what exactly? Aha! He doesn’tknow. We’re both surprised. It’s a turning point.

We fill in the blanks together. First though, wetake this side trip down the “who takes the guns”road. “They should take all the guns away,”becomes uncomfortably clear. It is paralyzing.Government takes them. Now, the current admin-istration is compared by the gun-grabbing opposi-

tion party to Nazis. Thatirony stops even hard-core leftists in their trackswhen it strikes home:They want to take thedangerous guns from citi-zens and give themto...Nazis?

By agreeing on theiradamantly held positions,their positions collapse oftheir own weight. Who’da thunk it? We wentthrough it step by step. Itwas a piece of cake not atiresome no-winnerdebate. Check it out – hisproposals, one by one,when accepted andexplained back to him,fell apart.

Somehow removing allthe no-good guns left 100million Americans armedin their homes with onlymaybe revolvers, or hunt-ing rifles, maybe shot-guns. This will stop chil-dren (or jihadis) fromcommitting mass murder,how, exactly? It doesn’teven address the prob-lem. It just flatly violatesthe Fourth Amendment.And the Ninth. And theTenth. Why even mentionthe Second? Or the factthat attempting such

monstrous acts exceeds the bounds of anythingpolitically possible (a point he’s not willing to con-cede). We agree it’s a boiling point for revolution.Like last time more than two centuries ago. Thatwon’t do. This is almost too easy.

44 CLASSIC FIREARMS: The C-93 Borchardt Semiautomatic Pistol

By John MarshallIt’s a very large and ungainly-looking pistol.

Almost all who view it for the first time remarkthat it looks a lot like a Luger. They would beright, as the Borchardt pistol was actually thedirect predecessor of the Luger. Many of theLuger’s design principles, particularly the toggle(or knee) action, were in fact first utilized success-fully in a pistol with the C-93 Borchardt. The storyof how the famous Luger pistol itself came aboutis inextricably intertwined with this invention ofHugo Borchardt.

Even the name of the 1893 pistol’s originator isoften misunderstood. While most folks would pro-nounce his Teutonic last name “Bor-SHART,” theactual pronunciation was “Bor-KART.” In the Ger-man language, the combined written letters “ch”sound like a “k” when articulated.

Hugo Borchardt was an interesting guy with avery active and inventive mind. Although he wasborn in Magdeburg, Germany on June 6, 1844, heimmigrated to the United States in 1860 andbecame a naturalized citizen. In 1872, he becameSuperintendent of Works for the Pioneer Breech-loading Arms Company in Trenton, Massachusetts.After that, he might be regarded today as a “jobhopper.” He quickly became a foreman for theSinger Sewing Machine Company. He then took ajob with Colt’s Patent Firearms ManufacturingCompany. Next, he went on to be employed withWinchester Repeating Arms Company, and then,on June 1, 1876, he became Superintendent andTreasurer for the Sharps Rifle Company.

While at Sharps, Borchardt filed some U.S.patents. He designed the Sharps-Borchardt Model1878, a single-shot hammerless falling-block rifle.It was somewhat like the earlier hammer-equippedSharps rifles, but used a coil spring-powered strik-er rather than a hammer-struck firing pin. In spiteof relatively poor sales, this rifle was lauded for itsstrength and accuracy, and it is ardently soughtafter by today’s collectors. The Sharps Companyfolded in 1881, and Borchardt went looking foryet another job. He returned to Europe, and took aposition with Fegyver es Gepgyar Reszveny-tarsasag (FeG) in Budapest, Hungary. He gainedthe title of works director there in 1890, but thenfrom 1890 to 1892 he had a short return to theU.S. when he served as a consultant to RemingtonArms to help develop the magazine on the Leerifle for U.S. Army trials. During this time, he is

believed to have first met Georg Luger,who was then submitting a rotating-bolt magazine rifle for those trials.

It’s probable that Borchardt con-ceived the design of the C-93 semiau-to pistol while in America, and itappears that at least one early prototypeof the C-93 was crafted at FeG in Budapest. Anexample exists with a chamber inscription of Waf-fenfabrik Budapest. By 1893, Borchardt hadsecured an association with Ludwig Loewe &Company in Berlin, Germany. That firm was at thetime mainly a manufacturer of machine tools, andhad a link with FeG, having helped them set upoperations. He then convinced Lowe to manufac-ture his new pistol. Borchardt had adapted theMaxim toggle-lock principle to work in this radi-cally new firearm. In the process he also devel-oped the bottlenecked 7.63x25mm Borchardt car-tridge that was used in his pistol, spawning thelater nearly identical 7.63x25mm Mauser,7.65x21mm Parabellum (.30 Luger), and7.62x25mm Tokarev cartridges. Although Bor-chardt spent most of the rest of his life in Ger-many, he maintained his U.S. citizenship.

Ludwig Lowe enthusiastically began productionof the new pistol and put it on the market in 1893.The designation “C-93” was German shorthand for“Construktion 1893.” The gun is credited withbeing the first commercially successful semiauto-matic pistol in the world. It was noted for itsexcellent workmanship and finish. In the fall of1894, Georg Luger, who was then employed byLowe as a consultant designer, demonstrated theBorchardt pistol to the U.S. Naval OrdnanceBoard, and had become intimately familiar withhow it worked. In 1896, Ludwig Lowe mergedwith the German ammunition firm of DeutschMetallpatronenfabrik in Karlsruhe (DMK), andformed Deutsch Waffen und Munitionsfabriken(DWM). Although his pistol had notable handlingdeficiencies, Borchardt was reluctant to come upwith more than cursory improvements to his origi-nal design. DWM therefore turned to Georg Lugerto completely re-design the pistol to make it morecompact, ergonomic and manageable. He filedpatents for what became the Model 1900 Parabel-lum pistol in 1898.

As a side note, it was well known that Herr Bor-chardt and Herr Luger (then chief engineer atDWM) did not get along very well professionally

for whatever rea-son. Perhaps itwas because in

spite of the obvi-ous similarity of the Bor-

chardt design to the workings of the Luger pistol,Borchardt’s name appeared nowhere on the 1898Luger patents. This was certainly a slap in the faceto Borchardt. By the same token, Borchardt andLuger’s dwellings in Berlin-Charlottenburg were inclose proximity, and they seemed to get along rea-sonably well socially. In spite of the patent contro-versy, the cover of the first English-language man-ual for the Model 1900 Parabellum pistol referredto that arm as the “Parabellum/AutomaticPistol/Borchardt-Luger’s System.” Ludwig Loweand DWM made a grand total of approximately3,000 C-93 pistols.

The toggle-joint action worked well. The posi-tioning of the magazine within the grip wasarguably a first for a semiautomatic pistol. A maga-zine release button was located just behind thetrigger on the left side of the piece. As the cartridgefired, the barrel, upper frame and bolt/toggle com-bination moved to the rear together. Unlike theLuger, which used ramps on the frame to break theknee joint, the Borchardt used two roller wheels onan extension of the rear toggle link. These rollersworked against a camming surface inside the ovalrecoil spring housing at the rear of the pistol tobreak the knee joint. This allowed the bolt/toggleassembly to flex and continue to the rear, while thebarrel/upper frame stopped in its rearward move-

ment. A fixed ejector beneath the bolt knocked theexpended case off the bolt vertically at the end ofthe bolt’s rearward movement. A curved leaf springin the recoil spring housing then returned the tog-gle/bolt assembly forward to strip another roundfrom the magazine into the chamber. A disconnec-tor mechanism required the release of the triggerbefore another round could be fired. A sliding safe-ty on the left of the pistol blocked the sear whenpushed upward so the pistol could not then befired. The action does not remain open followingthe last shot from the 8-round magazine. In orderto hold the action open, a dummy wooden maga-zine about an inch longer than the working maga-zine was provided with each pistol. It also housedan oil container and a three-section cleaning rod.When this wooden piece was inserted into the gripwith the action open, it protruded in front of thebolt to keep it in the retracted position. This was abit awkward, and a feature often criticized. Otherawkward features were the nearly vertical orienta-tion of the grip, the size and weight of the gun, andits balance. The pistol was heavy, weighing 2pounds 12-1/2 ounces, and it measured a lengthy11 inches. The barrel length was 6.5 inches.

The Borchardt pistol could be fitted with a pro-vided 14-inch detachable shoulder stock, making“a carbine for the cavalry” as illustrated here. Itweighed 14.5 ounces, making the overall weightof the combination about 3.5 pounds with anoverall length of nearly 2-1/2 feet. The stock incor-porated a long tightening thumbscrew, making thewhole assembly very tight and solid.

cool, unique firearms in an effort to defend ourSecond Amendment rights. With the recent surgeof popularity in “other” classified firearms,Franklin Armory has also jumped on the band-wagon. While they are known to push the limitsof the legal “gray” area, the Reformation offers aunique spin – or lack thereof – on the abilities ofan “other” firearm.

What is the Reformation?The Reformation, at first glance, is an SBR.

Looking closer, it’s an SBR. Taking a deep, thor-ough look into the form and function, you’ll findit’s a unique beast that is perfect for restrictivestates. Essentially, the Reformation is a straight-rifled firearm. Here’s how:

A firearm is considered a rifle if it has stan-dard, traditional rifling which spins the bulletas it passes though the barrel.

A firearm is considered a shotgun if it has asmoothbore barrel under 1 inch. It can consistof a rifled barrel as well.

The Reformation has straight rifling, which doesnot allow the bullet to rotate and stabilize overlong distances. Therefore, it is not a rifle. It doeshave grooves inside the barrel and therefore is nota shotgun. Consequently, the Reformation is con-sidered an “other” category firearm, as it doesn’tsatisfy the conventional definition found in lawssurrounding the explanation of a rifle or a shotgun.

In addition to this unique barrel, the Reforma-tion comes with an option for the Binary TriggerSystem, which fires a bullet when the trigger ispulled and released. The system has been provenand is effective – even if not foolproof.

Why the Reformation is Important:The Reformation serves two purposes. The first

is like a tool. It’s meant to be used as an excellent“home-defense” firearm. Its compact size,adjustable stock, and hefty muzzle velocity would

prove that to be true. The second purpose is like astatement piece. The Reformation’s “statement” isin response to lawmakers who establish lawsgrossly infringing upon our Second Amendmentrights. While it still isn’t 50-state legal, it’s prettydarn close.

Those individuals living in restrictive states willbe able to choose between two variations of thefirearm – 7” 5.56 NATO and 11.5” .300 BLK. [Edi-tor’s Note: I’d be VERY interested in seeing per-formance results of the .300 BLK variant.] Whilestates that have bans on any firearm based on theAR15 may be out of luck, the majority of citizenswill have the ability to purchase the Reformation,and without the need of a tax stamp.

Performance:There were three tests performed. The first for

general accuracy and performance, the second forspeed and reliability, and the third for muzzlevelocity.

Accuracy and Performance: This is where the Reformation starts to take a

hard-left turn from acceptable firearms. While astraight-rifled barrel possesses some advantageslegally and politically, it suffers considerably witheffective range. From our tests, Winchester whitebox 55-grain .223 performed well, but only out to50 yards before we saw significant keyholing.

We used several magazines in the test.Amend2, Hexmag and KCI 100-round drum.Though all magazine types accuracy was thesame. It would strike a target within 2 MOA at 50yards with 55 grain. About 30 percent of all shotsdisplayed signs of keyholing. Moving out to 75yards we moved to a 4 MOA with nearly 90 per-cent of all shots showed signs of keyholing.

Speed and Reliability: The Binary Trigger is a common option with the

Reformation. Franklin Armory offers vanilla lowersand charging handles on the Reformation, but thebolt carrier itself is lightened. With rapid firing the

Reformation performed well in smaller test firinggroups. When we attached the KCI drum mag itwould function well for the first 50 rounds or so,then it would begin to jam up and fail to feed.With some oil on the BCG, the issue was resolved,but only for a short time. However, speed isinsane. With the lightened BCG the rate of firewas extraordinary.

Muzzle Velocity: On a 7” barrel firing 55-grain Winchester white

box .223 no one was expecting great results. Wedid a 10-round test with four failures to capturevelocity. We are speculating that is may havesomething to do with bullet stability, but cannotguarantee.

Our six velocities were read as: 1) 2045, 2)2045, 3) 1983, 4) 1996, 5) 1984, 6) 2039, with anaverage of 2015. This isn’t exceptional but it’s not“that bad” either. At 50 yards the bullet would stillhave a velocity around 1854. Even if it’s keyhol-ing, it’s going to pack a punch.

For comparison: a 9mm 16” carbine firing Fed-eral 115-grain JHP would have a muzzle velocityaround 1295. At 7” that muzzle velocity is 1223.At 50 yards the 16” carbine will have a velocity of1120. At 50 yards the 7” will have a muzzlevelocity of 1073.

A 357 Magnum 16” carbine firing Federal 125JHP would have a muzzle velocity around 2051.At 7” the muzzle velocity is 1784. At 50 yards the16” carbine will have a velocity of 1771. At 50yards the 7” will have a muzzle velocity of 1532.

Potential Applications and Price:Franklin Armory hasn’t done a lot of market-

ing on this rifle. It is possible they’re hoping tokeep its existence under the radar for as long aspossible. But with a 50-yard keyhole I think it’llstay under the radar for quite some time. Regard-less, it would make for an exceptional short-range defensive tool, home-defense weapon,hall gun or even private-security rifle. The smallsize and concealability are surpassed only by ARpistols and true Short Barreled Rifles (SBR).Adding a large drum magazine can also providean excellent range of suppressive cover fire totactical applications.

When you break it down, the ballistic advan-tage of the .223 the Reformation is negligiblecompared to a large pistol-caliber carbine. Theadvantage to the Reformation is in accessoriesand attachments. All M-4, AR15 and M16optics, grips and magazines can be utilized bythe Reformation. In addition, the ability to havea singular ammunition type is something ofconvenience.

The Reformation comes in between $1180-$1895 depending on caliber, length, and BSFIIIBinary Trigger upgrades. It’s a steep price for a hallgun. However, it’s also going to remain a part ofAmerican firearms history.

rather close together. When you are first setting up a“naked” machine, there is plenty of wrench room, but ifyou have a need to adjust a die afterward, it often re-quires a delicate touch to maneuver a lock ring on acrowded toolhead.

By Duane ThomasAfter its resurrection just a few years ago, Super

Vel Ammunition has continued to add new loadsto its lineup. Most interesting to me among thenewer offerings is their self-defense-oriented .380ACP ammo. Super Vel owner Cameron Hopkins isvery good at coming up with witty nicknames forloads. His company’s 80-grain .380 Solid-CopperHollowpoint is called the Pocket Rocket.

I was very fortunate to be able to interviewCameron Hopkins for this article. My first ques-tion was, “Why? Why make the .380 Pocket Rock-et?“ His answer was, “The .380 is a popular cal-iber, more people are carrying them today. It’ssimply a matter of demand. People were carrying.380s; I needed to make a good .380 load. Therecent popularity of the .380 really started withthe Ruger LCP, then the Smith & Wesson Body-guard, and now we have the GLOCK 42. All popu-lar guns. Popular gun equals popular cartridgeequals ‘Let’s add a new load.’”

The Pocket Rocket was Super Vel’s first load tofeature a solid-copper hollowpoint (SCHP) insteadof a conventional brass-jacketed lead-core hollow-point. My next question was, “Why the solid-cop-per hollowpoint?” Cameron Hopkins replied, “The.380 is such an anemic cartridge to start with, andthere’s no such thing as a SAAMI-compliant, non-standard pressure, +P .380 load. The pressure ceil-ing is so low because of all the old guns available

in the caliber; therefore velocities are so slow youcan’t get reliable expansion with a conventionalhollowpoint. A solid-copper hollowpoint opensmore consistently at lower velocities. It was reallythe only way to get consistent expansion, withinSAAMI pressures, at .380 velocities.

“In order to get reliable expansion, you need thebullet to be going over 1,000 feet per second. Theonly way you’re going to get over 1,000 fps in .380with standard-weight .380 bullets is from a serviceduty-sized gun like a Walther PP. Not a PPK – a PPwith a full 4” barrel. You drop down to the 2.75”barrel of a Ruger LCP or Smith & Wesson Body-guard, velocity drops to down around 930 fps, andthat’s not enough to get reliable expansion.

“By dropping the bullet weight, from the com-mon 90-to-95 grains, depending on whetheryou’re going hollowpoint or hardball, down to 80grains, we can get higher velocities, and by goingto a solid-copper hollowpoint, we can have a bul-let that opens up more easily at lower velocities,at the same time.

“Even the Pocket Rocket won’t give you reliableexpansion out of something with a super-short bar-rel like a Ruger LCP. That’s the truth with anyammo; it’s just that other ammo companies won’tadmit it. In our testing, out of an LCP with a 2.75”barrel, the Pocket Rocket was going 967 fps. TheSmith & Wesson Bodyguard also has a 2.75” bar-rel, that gave us 960 fps. A Glock 42 has a 3.25”

barrel, that gave us 1,018 fps. And I don’t knowhow important this would be to your readers, butjust in the interest of completeness I’ll mentionthat an FN 1910 with a 4” barrel gave us 1,051fps, and out of the Walther PP, also with a 4” bar-rel, we got 1,102 fps.”

So, what are we looking at for expansion andpenetration? “In bare gelatin, out of a GLOCK 42,the solid-copper hollowpoint gives us double-cal-iber expansion. We’re looking at around .69” to.79”. When it expands, the Pocket Rocket deployssix cutting petals. And they do deploy consistent-ly. I don’t know if you want to mention it, butexpansion-wise we’re getting the same recovereddiameters, and the same penetration, as with9mm. It’s just that in 9mm, with higher velocities,the temporary stretch cavi-ties are larger.

”Barriers don’t seem tomake much difference tosolid-copper hollowpoints.We’ve tested the PocketRocket – well, all ourammo, really – in bare gel-atin, and after passingthrough denim, and in bar-rier testing through sheetrock. The performance isthe same, and penetrationruns between 10” to 12”no matter what. That’s withme shooting from about 15feet. The material wasClear Ballistics ‘Clear Gel’which duplicates 10-per-cent ordnance gelatin.Ordnance gelatin is a messto make, stinks to highheaven AND melts at roomtemperature, so I use ClearGel; it’s much easier towork with, and gives validresults.”

When Super Vel intro-duced its first lineup ofammo, all with conven-tional hollowpoints, oneof the goals was to offerpistol ammunition for salein the traditional 50-round boxes. A 50-round box of Super Velloaded with conventional hollowpoints costs$39.95, which is shockingly affordable for whatcan be considered specialty ammo. Bottom line,the solid-copper hollowpoints cost more. Thusthe 80-grain SCHP Pocket Rocket .380 load isonly available in 20-round boxes, at $24.95 abox. Which is also shockingly affordable, com-pared to some other loads out there attemptingto fill the same tactical niche.

The 80-grain SCHP bullet has a feed-friendly,rounded, hardball-like ogive. I have fired the

.380 Pocket Rocket out of the Ruger LCP andGLOCK 42, and also, believe it or not, a BerettaM1934, and I’ve yet to have a malfunction. I’msure there may be guns out there in the worldthat hate the Pocket Rocket from a standpoint offeed reliability, I just haven’t found them yet. Thesearch continues!

Cases are nickeled. Traditionally, nickeledcases have been factory shorthand for “higherthan standard pressure load” which is not thecase here, though eventually it’s come to indicateamong shooters, in a completely informal, non-official fashion, “serious self-defense ammo.” Alot of the higher-end manufacturers put their top-shelf ammo in nickeled casings to capitalize onthis perception. Whatever, it does make for a

pretty cartridge.I will mention, just

based on my own shootingexperiences, you do notwant to fire the PocketRocket out of a Ruger LCPfor more reasons thanvelocity. How heavilyrecoiling guns hit a per-son’s hand is a very indi-vidual thing. For somepeople, the gun butt hitsthe web of their hand hard,for some people the bot-tom/interior of the triggerguard whacks the under-side of their trigger finger. Iam one of the triggerguard/index finger people.Folks, firing a Ruger LCP is,for me, a pretty miserableexperience, even withmore-conventional ammo;with the Pocket Rocket it’sabsolutely brutal. Whilethis is a standard-pressureload, with a bullet that’slightweight for the car-tridge, when you pull thetrigger on this stuff there’sno doubt you’re firingsomething other than “nor-mal” .380. When I shoot afull seven-round gunload

of Pocket Rocket out of a Ruger LCP, it feels likemy trigger finger is being hit repeatedly with ahammer, and it aches for days afterward. With theall-steel Beretta M1934, with a gun butt longenough I can get a full three-finger grip, it’s thedifference between night and day.

Likewise with a GLOCK 42, which is a notablysoft-shooting, amazingly pleasant gun to fire, thePocket Rocket is quite easily controllable, and notat all abusive. My current backup gun is a GLOCK42, running an ETS 7-round magazine, and loadedwith eight rounds of Super Vel Pocket Rocket.

The HYSKORE Six Gun Modular Pistol Rack is constructedfrom closed-cell, non-reactive foam that will not absorb

ACP) machine pistol was a 1960s CzechoslovakPDW meant for self-defense of tank crews andother people operating in confined environments.A closed-bolt blowback design, it uses a sprungrate reducer to deliver controllable 800 rpm in itsoriginal select-fire form. Available in the US onlyas a stockless pistol until now, it was a curiositymore than a viabledefensive weapon.However, recently offeredwith a threaded muzzleand a brace by CzechpointUSA (czechpoint-usa.com),it has potential as a low-noise, low-recoil car orhouse gun.

The vz.61 comes withtwo 20-round and one 10-round magazine, the lattermeant to fit into a flap hol-ster. The enveloping boltmakes already short weapon even shorter whilemaintaining a 4.5-inch barrel sufficient for opti-mal performance of the classic .32 ACP cartridgewith a 71-Gr. fully jacketed bullet. The chartshows both the velocities of several popular car-tridges and illustrates that this vintage designdoes not work well with exotic ammunition. Onthe plus side, it’s been 100-percent reliable withstandard ammo.

The pistol comes with a decent 4 lb. trigger.Accuracy is determined mostly by the short sightradius and the steadiness of the hold. Kneeling, Igot palm-sized groups at 35 yards, which is per-fectly reasonable for the PWD role. The factoryrear sight markings of 75m (80 yards) and 150mare wildly optimistic, and the white numbers de-grade the sight picture contrast. Recoil is nonex-istent, muzzle blast is minimal, and the entire

Unfortunately, the 3D-printed rail gotleveraged out of alignment when braced, causingthe point of impact to wander significantly.Hopefully, the more current, denser parts that arebecoming available now would work better.

The light weight and minimal recoil make vz.61an excellent defensive tool for people who aren’table to handle something larger. It can also bewielded competently with one hand, making it areasonable weapon for confined spaces. The lim-ited power of .32 ACP rounds make it more of afun, quiet plinker than a front-line weapon, but it’sfar more reliable than rimfire and delivers greaterterminal effect. Even with the 9mm bore openingof the suppressor being loose for the 7.65mm bul-let, the extra tube volume more than compensatesfor that inefficiency. For rural shooters who canplink in their own backyards, this offers a fun expe-rience without disturbing neighbors.
