In 2011 the three flower markets of Delhi, CP, Mehrauli, Fatehpuri, were shifted to
Ghazipur, East Delhi. The promised multi-storeyed and air-conditioned premise for the
same is not even remotely operational. The scenario is dissatisfactory due to absence of
good infrastructure and basic utilities.
We as Design students have in this project tried to understand few basic requirements,
identify areas for design interventions and provide solutions to enhance and improve
the current situation.
Each group was given a study area from space, services, display, and branding.
Besides the specified area of study, all groups have also worked on creating display
systems.
A synopsis is given to provide a summary of project for each topic.

OVERVIEW
Research on the problem areas in the Ghazipur Flower Trade Centre; Work on
providing simple, cost-effective solutions to improvise the overall surroundings of the
market through design intervention. The emphasis to be on the practicality and
implementation of proposed design solutions to increase efficiency and decrease losses
of the merchants.
Make the flower market look every bit like its product, fresh, radiant and beautiful; and
build upon the idea of making the place a convenient, pleasant experience for both the
vendors and the customers.

METHODOLOGY
SYNOPSIS (Space)
10
The spatial plan was studied and the space was categorized into private, public; business
and services sector. The solutions aim at betterment for existing area and a design
strategy has been prepared for the same. Provisions for better circulation between the
different selling areas, new display systems suited for sellers and selling areas, better
storage area using bamboo paneled framing systems etc. are suggested solutions.
11
The problems identified and need attention, as per the studies are:
Selling area space partitions
Window space for the vendors
Storage spaces inside existing selling area
Proper roofing
Proper public circulation paths
Display racks
AREAS OF INTERVENTION
13
DESIGN BRIEF
(Spaces)
Phool mandi
To provide solutions for selling area re-design, renovation of the existing space, new
display methods, proper alignment of paths, shading, ventilation, storage etc.
Renovation
The existing structures needs to be polished and redesigned in a more flexible and
aesthetically appealing manner.
Display
Priority on design, space utilization, organisation, and industrial design.
14
Alignment
New design concept for the display stands with multifunctional alignment,
redefinition of working space inside the module, reduction of pathway size in
between thus controlling the unauthorized occupation of the pathways.
Covers, roof
Use of locally available material with least maintenance
Storage
Proper design of storage with local and ecofriendly materials for better space
utilization and aesthetics
15
Remodelling the stalls with proper exhibition space , storage, humidifiers, and a
proper access to the parking.
A design can be conceptualized for a single module of 24mx8m, and can be
prototyped to check the feasibility .
VARIOUS OPTIONS IN DESIGN
20 modular stalls available for business at present, out of which 5-6 are vacant, but
allocated for vendors.
Vendors spend approximately Rs. 25,000 (Rs. 50-60,000 for stalls with upper storage
partitions) for a module of 8mx4m to make their selling space.
Estimated property worth approx. Rs. 60 – 65 lakhs (Rs. 40-45 lakhs for the framed
structure including masonry and cemented base)
SELLING STALL RE- DESIGN
CONCEPTS
New roof with aesthetic appeal
Existing polycarbonate roofing to be removed and new arch roofing preferbly opaque organic material , thus more energy efficiency
Better partitioning for the shops
Level variations in selling area giving better Space definitions Higher level for selling/display, and the lower level for storage or surplus, thus making the spaces defined for the vendors
16
Pathways to be covered
Reducing the size of pathways , inclusion of shades in between the selling areas will help in a
better circulation of public, also preventing the vendors using the path as their display space.

The services aspect of Ghazipur Phool mandi was studied in the areas of waste disposal, food and water supply and sanitation facilities. The unlicensed flower area was found to be in a worse condition than licensed area in terms of waste disposal. There was no regular cleaning system and waste which included left-over flowers, melted ice water, used newspaper and polybags were disposed in the ground. The food and water supply was also unorganised and found to be unhygienic for consumption. Absence of a central electricity supply and sanitation facilities were another major issues. The waste disposal problem was further explored in detail identifying the key areas where design intervention could be done. Attempts have been made to provide innovative, cost effective and sustainable solutions for the disposed off waste. Concepts on recycling and reuse have been suggested for the same.
SYNOPSIS (Services)
Garbage Disposal & Drainage
Dirty and Unhygienic.
Absence of proper drainage system, water clogging and slush issue.
Random dumping of waste.
Plastic waste generated by food stalls.
Food Stalls
Eateries are very unhygienic. No proper demarcation of stalls or area.
Flowers are dumped close to the food; slush and garbage thrown all around.
AREAS OF INTERVENTION
22
Aim:
Is to improve the service standard and organisation by space management for water,
food, stalls; garbage disposal & utilisation.
Objectives:
To provide a solution for efficient garbage disposal & waste management.
To create awareness about various aspects of waste management and inclusion of local
rag pickers, mostly children.
To organize the food and water stalls in a convenient yet accessible way.
To design a display kiosk for maximization of space & higher visibility.

CONCEPT SUGGESTIONS
• An awareness drive for the better segregation of waste can be implemented. This will result in creating a system amongst the vendors which will help in proper disposal and utilization of waste that is mostly organic, like flowers, leaves and paper. It can be done with concepts like color coding of disposal containers and proper awareness.
• An inclusive employment generating system can be created for the rag pickers, where they will be a part of the system and association. This can be done by creating a system of segregated waste disposal which will be further absorbed in other derivative products like potpourri, holi powder or manure.
• A business system can be introduced for the Phool Mandi Association, that includes the derivative products of waste, for revenue generation, like potpourri, holi colors and manure.

DESIGN BRIEF
(Branding)
Aim:
To develop a branding strategy for the Ghazipur Flower Trade Center that would
popularize the market and attract more customers to the new location
Objectives:
Create an identity for the market by developing logos, signage, hoarding etc.
Incorporate modern day services to reach out to a larger number of people
29
Logo-
‚FTC, New Delhi‛- Ghazipur Flower Trade Center, New Delhi- Create an identity for the
market; people tend to visit a place where there is some degree of ‘familiarity’; develop
signage and hoardings
Branding Concepts
30
Website-
Flower Market- Easier to remember for consumers when seen on a hoarding or a card,
more than remembering a phone number; varieties of flowers available, directions to the
market, events, discounts can also be communicated
Convince vendors of investing in a branding strategy- for example, flower arrangement at
an event where there are a lot of people; smart advertising at such an event would yield
very good results
Justdial-
Any flower query may be directed to vendors of the market
Facebook page- accessible to millions
Visiting Cards-
Logo of market in the front and map on the back; increase level of familiarity.
Annual/ Biannual Prize competitions- a fair like one that used to be held at the Qutub
Minar flower market- if rewards given to vendors, say on the basis of the cleanest stall, it
would give way to a healthy competition where the competition spirit would be converted
into a motivational device for better performance.

SYNOPSIS (Display)
33
After a lot of thought process over the problems of display in the market and the
possible design solutions, a few workable concepts have been proposed. The designed
display units utilize the available space in best possible way. Most designs use bamboo,
and other naturally occurring resources and lightweight materials for easy portability.
The designs are made keeping in mind the form and structure followed by international
flower markets and the constraints of the Ghazipur flower market.
34
The display mostly done in the open area outside the stalls spilling on to the
road.
Current arrangement of display wastes a lot of usable space on the road and in
the allocated stalls. Also generates a lot of waste in form of spoiled and broken
cardboard boxes.
AREAS OF INTERVENTION
To utilize the provided space to display flowers using systematic design (cost
efficient) and to design kiosks for licensed and unlicensed vendors.
To design kiosks for licensed vendors and develop indigenous solutions for
unlicensed vendors keeping in mind financial constraints.
