T he NFDC presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to David Sinclair at

its 2015 Annual General Meeting, held at the Dorchester Hotel in London, on Friday 13 March, in recognition of a lifetime serving the demolition in a number of official capacities on both sides of the Atlantic.

This is only the third such award to be presented by the NFDC in its almost 75 years of existence, with the other two having gone to Claude Brown and Sidney Hunt respectively.

NFDC chief executive Howard Button said: “I’ve known David throughout my career in the demolition industry. He was there when I first joined the national Council and he just retired from the Council yesterday. He has given exemplary service to the

Federation throughout his whole career. He is a past president of the EDA and past president of the NFDC, of course. He has attended 67 meetings of the National Council – no mean feat alone. He is an ambassador for our industry and worked with the UN during the recovery work in Haiti following the earthquake

Baltem AS, a Sumitomo Corp subsidiary company and main Komatsu dealer for Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia, has been appointed by Sandvik Construction as a distributor of the latter’s range of mobile crushers and screens, in addition to providing full aftermarket care, spare parts and customer service. Headquartered in Talinnin, Estonia, Baltem was established in 1999 and now has offices, workshops and service engineers throughout this Baltic region.

Sandvik Construction’s distributor manager Kauko Juuri said of the appointment: “We are sure that the combination of Sandvik equipment and global aftermarket support, together with Baltem’s local knowledge, customer and industry expertise, will enable our customers throughout the area to benefit from a winning combination.”

CDE extends sales networkCDE Global has added a new US distributor to its sales network in the shape of McCourt & Sons Equipment, based in La Grange, Texas. With over 65 years’ experience in the supply of aggregate and sand processing equipment, McCourt also covers Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Wisconsin and

Minnesota. McCourt will represent the full line of washing and classification equipment offered by CDE.

Joel Prince, CDE regional manager in North America, said: “McCourt & Sons is a name associated with quality equipment, excellent customer service and above all a capability to work with

customers to identify issues with their existing processing plant and develop a system that improves efficiency. This matches our own approach to the design and execution of successful materials washing projects and we are very excited about the opportunities that will present themselves as a result of our new partnership.”

Over the last 12 months the two companies have been working together in North America on a number of projects and there are currently five in production. This follows the debut for CDE at ConExpo, Las Vegas, in March 2014. “We expect 2015 to be a very significant year for CDE in North America” explained Joel. “The work we have done over the last 12 months has seen us win a number of new projects and these will all become operational over the next two to three months. This will give us significant coverage across the USA and will be the catalyst that will allow us to maximise the opportunity that exists for our equipment in North America.” ■

DIARY DATES

New board directors at KeltbrayVince Corrigan, a newcomer to the company, and Paul Deacy have been appointed as group executive members of Keltbray’s board of directors.

Vince Corrigan joins the company from contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, with whom he has spent more than 30 years, most recently in the position of director and regional manager of the firm’s London and South-East business. Vince said of his move: “I was hugely attracted to the numerous specialist streams Keltbray operates in. These provide plenty of scope for carefully managed further development and positioning within existing as well as new market areas. I also have a passion for driving improvement and innovation programmes, and nurturing high potential staff. I see these qualities as being a good match for Keltbray’s own best practice reputation and track record in attracting and developing record numbers of people through apprenticeships, internships and other training opportunities.”

Paul Deacy is currently managing director of Keltbray Demolition & Civil engineering. Keltbray Group managing director John Price said of his elevation: “Paul has risen through our ranks over the last decade and assumed his current role in December 2013. He has since demonstrated his strong leadership and creativity in driving the continued growth in our core business markets, and we welcome Paul’s continued positive contribution to the performance of the Group,”

but would also help reduce any unnecessary disturbance to the hospital patients.

The jacking and skidding proposal would take three months to carry out and would be the first time a project of this type had been tried in Saudi Arabia. Engineering for the operation was done by Mammoet and subcontractor Techniek en Methode, part of the Bresser Group.

The first stage of the project began with the removal of the

minaret using a crane. Next, the ground underneath the mosque was removed and replaced by a supporting concrete base. Skidding equipment, including skid shoes, push and pull units, skid tracks and power packs were then installed. Once all the equipment was set up, the mosque was skidded more than 120 m (395 ft) to its new location, a process that took less than 48 hours.

See http://bit.ly/1MUmmvn for a video of the move. ■

Mammoet’s proposal for the move was to jack up and slide the entire mosque to the new location using a jacking and skidding system

International heavy lift and specialised transport company Mammoet helped move a 2,400 tonne mosque in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to make room for a new hospital.

Originally the mosque was going to be demolished and rebuilt at a new location, work that would take around 10 months to complete. To save time and to save the mosque from demolition, Nesma called on Mammoet to help move the entire building instead.

Mammoet’s proposal for the move was to jack up and slide the building to the new location using a jacking and skidding system. This plan would not only help keep the mosque intact, allowing visitors to continue their prayers,

■ UK contractor Masterton Demolition, a division of the Blackwell Group, has been forced into administration. Headquartered in Grangemouth in Scotland, the company employed 140 at peak, specialising in industrial dismantling and decommissioning. It saw strong growth in 2012, but unfortunately despite a strong forward order book, the contracts it had entered into were not as profitable as expected. A small number of staff have been retained by the administrator PwC to service remaining contracts.

■ UK contractor DSM has demolished one of that country’s most unloved structures, the Greyfriars bus station in Northampton Dubbed the ‘mouth of hell’, in 2005 it came third in a ranking of 12 UK buildings that should be demolished as voted for by viewers of Channel 4 TV series Demolition. An example of 1970s brutalist architecture, the structure was imploded in just a few seconds.

DEMOLITION BITS

Speakers line up for Summit conferenceLeading industry figure David Sinclair will be keynote speaker at the 2015 World Demolition Summit being held in Amsterdam on November 6, 2015.

As one of the founding fathers of the UK’s NFDC, an EDA past president and an NDA board member, David is among the best known ‘elder statesman’ of the industry on both sides of the Atlantic.

In Amsterdam, he will take as his topic A Life in Demolition, during which he will touch on some of the more momentous developments and incidents that the industry has seen in his years of active involvement and take a stab at predicting the future for the industry.

Also taking to the stage will be Awards judge Henrik Bonneson, who will report on the findings of a recent study in his native Denmark entitled National investigation of PCB sources

in Danish Buildings. This was a study carried out by COWI in conjunction with Grontmij on behalf of the Danish Energy Agency. Henrik will outline the potential impact of the results on demolition projects.

Waste recycling will be a topic for CDE Global’s Peter Craven, who will outline his view that European construction and demolition recycling targets are actually misleading and not fit for purpose. He believes that targets should drive improvements, increase efficiency and encourage

innovation but the 70% recycling target laid down in the European Waste Framework Directive does none of these things in its current form.

Australia’s Liberty Industrial, in the shape of Clinton Dick, will return to Amsterdam to report on one of its industrial demolition projects, this time an innovative approach to the deconstruction of the historic Hammerhead Crane located at the Garden Island Naval Base in Sydney harbour for the Australian Department of Defence. ■

Metso’s exclusive Irish distributorMcHale Plant Sales has been appointed by Metso as exclusive agent in the Republic and Northern Ireland for the latter’s ranges of mobile crushing and screening product ranges.

Under the new arrangement, the Birdhill-based company will commence selling Metso products with immediate effect, with a primary focus on the Lokotrack mobile crushing and screening plants, equipment that McHale believes will have significant appeal for Irish customers.

The appointment sees McHale return to the crushing and screening market – one in which the company previously enjoyed success. Noting the strong foothold that the company has within the quarrying, construction and civil works sectors – due principally to its work as Komatsu distributors

– its new role allows McHale to plan for future growth built on its considerable experience and knowledge of the crushing and screening market.

Describing their appointment as one that “rekindles our long-standing involvement in the crushing and screening market”, McHale managing director Michael McHale said: “the Metso product line gives us a product offering that fits perfectly into our operation and adds to the value we can bring to customers.”

The expertise that McHale Plant Sales has within the sector is seen by Metso as a feature that should advance its market position in Ireland. The Irish economy is showing strong signs of recovery with some very significant infrastructural projects currently in the pipeline. ■

Atlas Copco exits compact crushing businessAtlas Copco has decided to end production of its Austria-produced Powercrusher compact crushing and screening equipment during 2015. The equipment, originally developed under the Hartl name, is manufactured at St Valentin, Austria, where some 70 personnel are employed. In 2014, the business had a turnover of Euro 28 million (US$31.2 million).

According to a spokesman, the closure will take effect in mid-2015 and there are no plans to try to sell the business as a going concern or relocate production-related employees elsewhere in the Atlas Copco organisation. Service and support personnel will continue in their roles following the closure although it is possible that this function in time may be taken over by a third party, to whom these personnel will then be transferred.

Johan Halling, president of Atlas Copco’s Mining and Rock Excavation Technique business sector, said: “We are discontinuing this business as it does not fit strategically for us. We will ensure existing Powercrusher customers will continue to have their equipment serviced in the best way.”

INTERVIEW

D&Ri has interviewed the last three presidents of the IDE upon their

accession to the office, and like his predecessors, IDE president Duncan Rudall has some firm

goals in mind for his term of office. Talking at the recent IDE Spring

Seminar at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, he said: “The main aim that I have for the next two years is to see the status of the Institute raised to a higher level within the industry, but also within the general construction industry as well. In addition, I want to see the entrance criteria elevated to provide a good grounding of qualification and back-up to ensure that the skills of our members are recognised.”

“It is fair to say that the demolition sector has been viewed by the general construction industry as being at the lower end, maybe less well educated in a more demanding sector. I think we have flipped that on its head over recent years – we have become a very well educated workforce as well as being very

well qualified. We need to get this message out to a wider audience that there is an

engineering institute in place for the demolition sector whose membership is made up of a fully qualified and experienced engineering fraternity.”

In recent years, the IDE has made efforts to internationalise its membership. However, these efforts have to a large extent failed to generate a large

up-take from demolition specialists from outside the UK. Duncan said of this effort: “It was a great idea and we do really want this to happen – the issue is managing the examination process overseas. Obviously, we now have some European members and that is slightly easier, with contact possible at the various demolition events that take

place, such as your Summit.” “The new membership grade that was

announced at our recent AGM, TechIDE, should help in this regard. This grade is aimed at management level individuals who, for whatever reason, are not able to sit the examinations but are more than capable of doing the work. We believe that this would be more fitting for overseas individuals who wish to join the Institute since there is a lesser requirement for gaining formal Continuous Professional Dev elopment (CPD) points as is laid down for the other membership grades.”

The announcement of this new grade was such that it was intended to be a membership grade for at lower level demolition personnel within the UK who did not suit the existing grades so D&Ri asked Duncan how this would work. He answered by saying: “That is perhaps an impression we did not really intend to give. While it is true there is much less of an examination framework involved with the TechIDE grade and it is aimed at the lower end of the site-based people, there are still a lot of individuals out there who have the skills to ‘tear a building down with their eyes shut’ but sitting an examination would not be their forte or for other reasons. Because of this criteria for maintaining a membership, it fits well for potential members overseas.”

Duncan went on to say that he believes that the more individuals from outside the UK industry take up this membership grade, the better it will be for both the industry globally and the UK industry itself. “I think the UK is already streets ahead of the majority of the world in terms of best practice, and especially where the qualification path is concerned, something I believe has been recognised for quite some time. Trying to administer what we want to administer in regions where perhaps the working practises have not quite caught up with the way we work – I would not say not in the same league but more not in the same sort of controlled environment – that will be harder. However, to try and capture these people, perhaps the TechIDE is the only way can do it. But no matter what we do, it will

INTERVIEW

have to be well managed as we do not want to dilute what we have as a basis to work from.”

An IDE president’s term of office of just two years is not a long time to establish such an initiative, so support from the rest of the association, its committees and members, would seem essential if this initiative is to be successful. “The committees are buying into it,” said Duncan. “It has been a long time in the planning – there has always been a grey area as to where we were with certain grades, with recognition and access levels set quite high and there was a recognition of this gap. Since we are moving towards becoming a bigger part of the construction industry in terms of possible Chartered status and being members of the Engineering Council, then we have to have different layers of membership to maintain that.”

Occupying the position of president is obviously a double-edged sword, in that considerable time and effort is required to fulfil the role effectively. This in turn will to have the potential for an impact on the office-bearer’s ‘day job’. Duncan said of this: “It already has – I have been on the Council for nearly eight years and I was prepared for the impact that would have. As vice president, I lost 22 days a year and as president I expect to easily commit around a month to the role, and I would say I have had to adjust the way I live to accommodate that. It is going to be a heavy impact during the two years. I feel very passionately about the industry and am

prepared to accept this as a result. It is one of those industries where once you start doing it, you cannot get away from it. I would say you come into demolition to enjoy it and not for financial gain. It is definitely worth the two year commitment!”

Duncan will be succeeded in turn by new current vice president David Darcey, who is a past president of the UK’s NFDC, who will take over carrying the torch of further developing the standing of the IDE, but Duncan was firm that there two goals he would like to see achieved during his tenure. “I would like to see the IDE achieve Chartered

stature by the end of my term and add to that a doubling in the number of IDE members from where it currently stands,” he said.

“That would take us to at least 1,000 members UK-wide and then also potentially more internationally. That would put us in a good position. If you look at the other Chartered professional associations, they have thousands of members both worldwide and in the UK. The IDE estimates that there are approaching 14,000 individuals working in the demolition industry in the UK, so achieving that membership level will not happen overnight but it should be possible.” ■

SCREENING EQUIPMENT

L ast year saw the news that Sandvik would cease production of mobile crushing and screening equipment in

Swadlincote, UK and centre its manufacturing effort at its factory in Ballygawley in Northern Ireland.

Functions such as product support, marketing and research & development are still carried out in Swadlincote, but production is now in Ballygawley and it was here that Sandvik chose to launch two new screening products at the start of this year.

As Anders Kjellberg, Sandvik’s vice president for crushing & screening, said: “Ultimately it’s about creating a centre of excellence, but we will also have satellites around the world. It has also improved our cost base and made it leaner.”

He added that when Sandvik acquired the Extec and Fintec businesses in May 2007, which brought the Swadlincote and Ballygawley sites into the company, it had five

factories around the world making mobile crushers and screens.

Many of the ideas that were distinct features of the Extec range are being carried over into new generations of the company’s equipment. A good example is the QA335 Doublescreen – the ‘Doublescreen’ was a patented feature of the Extec range, with two independent screens in the same box, effectively performing two processes on one plant. Sandvik says this system still outperforms a similarly sized single screen by about 30%. Eugene Lyons, vice president for sales and marketing of mobile crushers and screens at Sandvik, said: “The Doublescreen is a massive advantage over our flat and single-box competitors.”

Described as a mid-sized unit, the QA335 features a 75 kW (100 hp) Cat engine and

has a simple to use sequential start-up system on-board, which allows it to be set

up and put into operation at the push of five numbered and colour-coded buttons.

The standard machine weighs in at just over 27 tonnes and the transport dimensions

are 15.3 m (50.2 ft) long x 3.4 m (11.2 ft) wide x 3.0 m wide.

Also new is the QE441 scalping screen. “This is a machine that has been designed and

built to take heavy-duty work,” said Eugene. This flagship machine replaces the QE440 at the top of the range and changes include updates to the screen box, screen drive and screen media, as well as improvements to the apron plate feeder, wear resistant hopper and radio remote controls, all of which are fitted as standard.

New trommel from EdgeEdge Innovate hosted its first ever dealer open day with 80 delegates attending from over 20 different countries worldwide and used the event to introduce its newest product, the TRM516 mobile trommel that is suitable for use in a wide range of applications, such as aggregates, skip waste, industrial and demolition waste recycling.

The machine features a 4.9 m (16 ft) drum that permits it to produce high quality materials such as compost, gravel, sand and topsoil with ease, said Edge, and also achieves enhanced screening results as result of the greater length of time that material remains in the drum. This, claimed the company, results in a machine that can process many material types that only larger trommels previously could.

Other features on the machine include an overload sensing system where the drum and feeder work together to prevent overloading using pressure transducer technology. Hydraulic pressure used to drive the drum is continuously monitored – should the pressure rise too high, the drum slows down and should it remain too high the feeder will slow down to an eventual stop. Once the pressure drops the drum speeds up again.

By engineering a very compact end conveyor machine, Edge said it has kept the advantage of a side conveyor product with all the advantages of the end conveyor offering, ultimately giving the customer the best of both worlds. For those that require a 90° output conveyor, the radial conveyor can of course be set to that position either left or right to offer this feature. Optional oversize and radial fines conveyors are also available for higher stockpiling requirements.

The fact that machines like the QE441 can either be used to feed crushers or operate as sizing screens is increasing their popularity according to Eugene. “Scalping screens have become very big in the market so we are expanding the range. Customers are looking for machines that will do more than one application. A scalping screen will do the job of a scalper or a sizing screen,” he said.

The QE441 has a maximum capacity of 900 tonnes per hour and the maximum feed size is 800 mm. Power comes from a 96 kW (129 hp) Cat engine and the weight of the standard model is just over 37 tonnes.

According to Sandvik, the market in general for this type of machine remains flat. However, it said that being a major player that is able to offer financing, buy-backs and other soft products was appreciated by customers. Sandvik Construction’s vice president for global markets, Greg Albert said: “Financing and buy-back are a big competitive advantage for us. In emerging markets financing never used to be needed, but now it is being asked for and it is a big opportunity.”

The first signs of Chinese manufacturers entering the sector are beginning to appear with the first of these being construction equipment manufacturer XCMG who has launched a mobile screening unit that the company developed with its German

New Cedarapids mobile screenTerex Mineral Processing Systems has expanded its CR Series mobile plant line with the addition of the Cedarapids CRS620S screen, which offers increased productivity with greater capacity, said the company. Terex MPS went on to say that the new unit can be used in applications where traditional horizontal screens cannot because of the combination of its EL-Jay high g-force stroke motion combined with adjustable slope operation, which allow it to handle larger deck loads and larger screen openings. The screen slope can be hydraulically adjusted in 2.5° increments up to a maximum of 7.5° to allow the screen to be tailored to the application.

Screen openings up to 152 mm (6 inch) are possible and patent pending “slant spring” screen suspension provides stability at all slopes. The plant features large capacity conveyors to handle the high production capabilities of the new LJ-TSV screen. The 1.2 m (3.4 ft) wide fines conveyor with elevated discharge and the two 0.8 m (2.5 ft) wide reversible cross conveyors that extend up to 1 m (3.3 ft) beyond the main frame easily feed off-plant conveyors. Roll-away blending chutes and extended walkways allow easy access to screen cloth. The patented low-maintenance flex shaft screen drive eliminates drive belt influence on the screen motion, belt whip, belt slippage, and spring loaded belt tensioners. There are no drive adjustments necessary when the screen slope is altered. In addition, the new flex shaft drive folds for travel, without shaft disassembly, to minimise plant transport width.

subsidiary Schwing and the Beijing University of Technology. The result is the 38 tonne tracked two deck MSP1561that is claimed to offer a throughput of 600 tonnes per hour. According to the company, the new screen should find application in recycling, mining and general construction.

With a 6.1 x 1.5 m (20 x 5 ft) screen box, it has a ground clearance of 343 mm (13.8 inch), can climb 9° inclines and features hydraulically extending/retracting conveyors to cut down on set-up time. Power comes from a 97 kW (130 hp) Cummins engine and transport dimensions are 18 x 3.3 x 3.5 m (59 x 10.9 x 11.5 ft). A smaller 300 tonnes per hour unit is also available. XCMG says the MSP1561 will be available to international markets shortly and is already on sale in China. ■

Hartl sees doubleHartl Crusher has launched its new HSP 3300, which it claims is a highly mobile compact two deck screening plant with a maximum throughput of 90 m3/hour (3,180 ft3/hour). According to the company, it will find use in natural stone processing as well as in the classification and refinement of recycled materials. The screener is also perfect for use in road construction and earthworks as well as forest road construction and excavations.

Georg Haberfellner, chief designer at Hartl Crusher, said: “The main advantage lies in the screen box’s electro-hydraulic drive which provides more power than comparable pure electric drives and is also much more robust and durable. At the same time, with this drive system the speed of the screen’s rotation is continuously variable and a reversal of rotation direction is also possible.”

He went on: “The screen box is spring mounted and thus provides the best power transfer for both screen decks. All components are high quality and are designed with component protection in mind."

Hartl offers HCB conveyor belts to go with the screen box that are electrically driven and have a maximum discharge height of 2.5 m (8.2 ft), with a folding mechanism that provides easy belt changing as well as reducing transport dimensions to a minimum. When

directly fed by a bucket crusher, up to three categories of material can be produced

parent company Doosan’s stand, with the highlight being the launch of the high performance T450 tracked loader. This new machine fills the gap between the T100 and T590 once occupied by the T140, production of which has been discontinued.

The T450 is powered by a Bobcat D24 45.5 kW (61 hp) turbocharged diesel engine that provides 25% more power than the T140 model and meets the current Stage IIIB emission requirements through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) after-treatment technologies, with no diesel particulate filter (DPF).

High productivity results from the increased pressure of the hydraulic system that provides increased attachment performance – the T450 can be matched with over 80 different attachments and there are rear hydraulic auxiliary and 7-pin ACD connector options available. It is equipped as standard with the quick-change Bob-Tach attachment mounting frame. However, customers can choose the optional Power Bob-Tach system to change non-hydraulic attachments simply by flipping a switch inside the cab.

Equipped with radial lift boom arms, the rated operating capacity of the T450 has also increased from 642 kg (1,412.5 lb) to 665 kg (1,463 lb), while the operating weight has been reduced from 2,990 kg (6,578 lb) to 2789 kg (6,135.8 lb). Thanks to its compact dimensions and lower weight, the T450 is even easier to transport on a trailer towed by a light truck, 4 x 4 or all-terrain vehicle.

Also new will be the TL358 6 m (19.7 ft) compact telehandler with a width of just 2.1 m (6.9 ft) to allow it to access confined sites and buildings. The new machine features a 74.5 kW (64 hp) diesel and can be supplied with an elevated cab to provide increased operator visibility.

Finally, two new telescopic handlers aimed firmly at the rental sector, the 13 m (42.7 ft) T35130S and 14 m (45.9 ft) T35140S,

Mecalac said it would have its new 12MTX on show –a versatile 9.7 tonne machine can act as an excavator, a loader, a forklift and a tool carrier

26/30/42/50-2 forklift truck with optional hydrostatic drive – a 5 tonne capacity machine designed for rough terrain handling – as well as the MI 50G industrial forklift, a 5 tonne capacity gas-powered machine. Manitou’s MT 625 Easy telescopic handler, which has a maximum 2.5 tonne lifting capacity and hydrostatic transmission, will also be on show, together with its latest rotating telescopic handler, the MRT 3255. This machine has a 5.5 tonne capacity and a maximum lifting height of 31.6 m (103.7 ft). Machines from Manitou’s sister brand Mustang will also be on the stand, including three new mid-sized skid steers – the 1350R, 1500R & 1650R, with operating capacities ranging from 600 to 800 kg (1,320 to 1,760 lb).

Meanwhile, Mecalac said it would have its new 12MTX on show – an articulated 9.7 tonne machine that can act as an excavator, a loader, a forklift or a tool carrier thanks to its innovative boom and hydraulic quick coupler. It will also present its new AS 1600 swing loader at the show, which is an 11 tonne class machine with four-wheel steering that can load to a height of 3.4 m (11.2 ft) with a turning radius of 4.4 m (14.5 ft). Several bucket

will be on show. The former has a maximum lift height of 12.6 m (41.4 ft) and a maximum forward reach of 8.6 m (28.2 ft and the latter has a maximum lift height of 13.6 m (44.6 ft) and a maximum forward reach of 9.8 m (32.2 ft).

Despite their simpler design to meet rental needs, Bobcat said that they still offer many of the advantages of the new generation handlers from the company, including protected sensitive parts, and safe and intuitive

Production started this year on the Stage IV-compliant Bell B30E ADTs, which will be on show at Intermat

machine, according to the company. The new 10 tonne EW100 excavator will

also be on the stand, featuring a new ECO operating mode, while visitors can also view its 803 dual power mini excavator – which couples with an external electro-hydraulic power unit as an alternative to the standard diesel engine.

Wacker Neuson sister company Kramer also plans to present new compact machines, including new 5085 and 5085T wheeled and tele loaders from its basic series, with a bucket capacity of 0.9 m3 (31.8 ft3). The 0.4 m3 (14.2 ft3) bucket capacity 5035 wheeled loader will also be on show – the smallest basic line model that the company produces.

Machines from the 8-Series wheeled loaders, which is the premium line of products from Kramer, will also be on display, including the 8095 and 8115 models, which have bucket capacities of 1 and 1.2 m3 (35.3 and 42.4 ft3) respectively.

New on the Yanmar stand will be the C08, a new 800 kg capacity mini-carrier designed for landscaping and gardening work. The C08 comes in four versions, as either standard or high-tip (the latter offering an elevating skip), and an optional self-loading system (available for both standard and high-tip models).

New mini excavators will also be on show in the form of a fresh range of 1.5 to 2.5 tonne machines – the SV16, SV18 and SV 22 short-tail models. Designed for easy transport on small trailers or light trucks, Yanmar said the machines could be operated in very narrow sites and are ideal for working in urban areas and for landscape work. The SV26 will also be on show and is a new 2.6 tonne machine designed for European customers.

HEAVY METALThe latest engine emissions will be the dominant theme at Intermat, with a large number of Stage IV-compliant engined machines taking centre stage. D&Ri understands that there will be at least two

Shantui will launch two hydrostatic drive dozers at Intermat. Pictured is the SD10YE, which competes in the D5 class

machines on show of note for demolition contractors. The first is the Komatsu demolition excavator reported on the last issue, the PC490LC-10, that will be on show in its medium reach configuration, with a boom extension fitted between the standard dig boom and the boom foot, with the machine weighing in at 66 tonnes. It can reach to 17.4 m (57 ft) and can carry a 5 tonne tool to that

height. With its fully dedicated high reach boom mounted to the boom

foot, the machine will weigh in at 65 tonnes, reach to 28 m (92

ft) and carry a tool weight of 3.5 tonnes (including

any quick coupler system). The model that will be seen in Paris will in fact be powered by a Stage IIIB/Tier 4 Interim diesel but D&Ri understands that in the future Stage IV versions will be available.

Another demolition special will be on the Liebherr stand, but details are currently not available and Liebherr stayed close-mouthed when tackled about the machine at the recent Demolition Conference in Berlin – it is definitely a case of going to the show to see it. Nevertheless, the company did confirm that the new machine will share one feature common to all Liebherr demolition excavators – the ability to safely work 360° around the tracks and will offer extended reach as well as high reach. This does suggest boom configuration options similar to that of Komatsu’s new PC490LC-10.

New machines on the Case Construction Equipment stand will include a new generation of Tier 4 Final-compliant crawler excavators in the form of the D series, with four new models ranging from 25 to 40 tonnes.

The company’s new Tier 4 Final F Series wheeled loaders will also be making their first public appearance, while the first Case grader will be making its debut as well – another Tier 4 Final-compliant machine.

Also on the stand will be the F Series compact wheeled loaders that Case launched in September 2014. This is a four model line-up, ranging from 4.4 to 6.2 tonnes. The company also said it planned to extend and upgrade its skid steer and compact tracked loader line-up with five new models, also featuring Tier 4 Final engines, although it was keeping tight-lipped on further details.

Stage IV is the name of the game for Doosan, with its stand at the show occupied by a total of 11 new excavators that meet the regulations. These consist of two wheeled machines, the 17 tonne. 113.3 kW (152 hp) DX170W-5 and the 21 tonne, 141.2 kW (189 hp) DX210W-5 that will be joined by two tracked machines designed for confined work sites in the shape of the 24 tonne 141 kW (189 hp) reduced radius DX235LCR-5

Across the board, Doosan claims reduced fuel consumption and productivity gains for the new machines, allied to lower cost of ownership.

Kobleco’s return to Intermat will see it launch a new version of its 5.5 tonne excavator which now features the company’s INDR low noise cooling system. In more general terms, Intermat will see the company launch its ‘Generation 10’ excavators in Europe, which have been updated from the previous series with Stage IV-compliant engines. Kobelco says it has reduced operating costs for these machines compared to the Generation 9 models with improved fuel efficiency. For

example, the 21 tonne class SK210LC-10 is said to

offer 6.7% more production

in heavy mode at

the same fuel consumption levels as its Generation 9 equivalent. Kobelco added that fuel consumption is reduced in Normal and Eco modes.

The company has also looked to improve serviceability, with easy-to-replace canister-type hydraulic oil return filters and a new specification air cleaner inner element. New operator accessible diagnostics on the in-cab monitor have also been added, as have audible warnings for issues such as high hydraulic oil temperatures and clogged oil filters.

Kobelco’s Intermat stand will also feature an interesting variant on the standard SK210LC-10. The SK210D has been

designed specifically for the task of dismantling old cars. The key

elements of this are a multi-purpose rotating crusher

attachment on the boom and a two-way clamp arm on the front of the carrier, which holds the car chassis steady as

it is being dismantled.Komatsu will introduce the third generation

of its hybrid excavators at Intermat in the form of the 22.6 tonne HB215LC-2. Since introducing hybrids in 2008, Komatsu says

it has sold 2,500 such machines worldwide, and that average fuel savings come in at 25% compared to a traditional machine.

The new hybrid features a Stage IIIB engine and updated hybrid technology, which Komatsu says translates into better fuel economy, particularly when using the excavator with hydraulic attachments.

In a different technology area, Komatsu will use the show to introduce its new PC210LCi-10 intelligent machine control excavator, which is designed to improve efficiency by preventing the operator from digging too deep or damaging the target surface.

Operating weights range from 22.6 to 23.5 tonnes, depending on the configuration, and other specifications are identical to those for the standard PC210LC-10.

More traditional new models on show will include the Stage IV-compliant 24 tonne class PC240LC-11 tracked excavator, which the company says offers 6% better fuel efficiency than the previous model. All Komatsu Stage IV machines come with Komatsu CARE, a complimentary maintenance programme covering the first three years or 2,000 hours for factory-scheduled maintenance, performed by Komatsu-trained technicians and genuine parts. It also includes a maximum of two complimentary diesel particulate filter (DPF) changes and a warranty on these parts for the first five years or 9,000 hours. There is also a five year/9,000 hours warranty on the SCR body.

Further down the weight classes is the

new 8.5 tonne class PC88MR-10 tight tail swing crawler excavator, which Komatsu said provides improved efficiency, lower fuel consumption, improved operator comfort and enhanced serviceability. It offers a maximum digging depth of 4.6 m (15.1 ft) and a maximum reach of 7.1 m (23.3 ft). A swing boom allows the PC88MR-10 to work in confined spaces so the operator can focus on the work in front of the machine and worry less about rear swing impact in confined areas.

New in Komatsu’s dozer range at Intermat will be the D65-18, which is available in three undercarriage variants – standard (EX), low ground pressure (PX) and wide (WX). The unit

weighs in at 20.5 to 24.9 tonnes depending on configuration, and power comes from a Stage IV 162 kW (217 hp) Komatsu engine. The new transmission features a lock-up torque converter that the company said can reduce fuel consumption by 10%, and this can be set to either automatic or manual mode.

The standard blade is Komatsu’s sigmadozer design, which is said to improve performance and productivity by up to 15% compared to conventional designs. A six-way Power Angle

Tilt (PAT) blade is available as an option.Further up the weight range is the new 264

kW (354 hp) Stage IV-engined D155AX-8 dozer, which weights 38 to 43 tonnes, depending on configuration. Again, the sigmadozer blade is standard for up to 15% more production over conventional blades and the transmission also features the fuel-saving lock-up torque converter.

INTERMATSHOWGUIDE

Intermat will see the launch of Volvo’s Stage IV-compliant 16 tonne class EW160E and 18 tonne EW180E. Customisation is a key selling feature, with the company making the machines available with 12 different tyre configurations and a range of boom options and hydraulic functions, depending on the attachments to be used.

Both models are approved for road use and can be fitted with a trailer hitch that can pull up to 8 tonnes with dry run breaks and three tonnes without brakes. Operators can also bring all their tools along with them in a new 120 kg capacity drawer-type tool box that slides out from the undercarriage.

The company’s latest wheeled loaders meanwhile are the L60H, L70H and L90H, which cover the 1.6 m3 to 2.1 m3 standard bucket classes with 123, 127 and 137 kW (165, 171 and 184 hp) Stage IV-compliant engines respectively.

A new fuel-saving feature is the Eco-pedal that has a push-back mechanism that engages when engine rpm is about to exceed the most economic operating range. The operator senses the resistance and reduces pressure on the accelerator to continue within this range. If full engine speed is needed, the push-back mechanism can be overridden.

The front end of each machine features Volvo’s Torque Parallel (TP), which the company says combines the benefits of the Z-bar and parallel linkage to deliver high breakout torque and parallel movement throughout the lifting range. The machines are equipped with a 100% differential lock on the front axle, which provides traction and rimpull on soft and slippery ground.

CRUSHING AND SCREENINGDespite the absence of two of the heavy hitters in the crushing and screening sector, namely Sandvik and Metso, there still will be plenty new to see at the Villepinte showground where crushing and screening equipment is concerned.

Visitors to Intermat that call by the Wirtgen Group stand will see tailored solutions from the Road and Mineral Technologies business sectors, including world premieres from

Wirtgen, Vögele, Hamm and Benninghoven, the latest generation of track-mounted jaw and cone crushers from Kleemann and a selection from the Group’s extensive service range.

Of particular interest to our industry, Kleemann will be displaying its new 30 tonne Mobicone MCO 9 EVO cone crusher for the first time in Paris, where it will be joined by the MC 100 Z EVO mobile jaw crusher.

Trimble will put an emphasis on

technology around its connected site

initiative

Topcon will present an intuitive new device for staking-out work

33d&ri MARCH-APRIL 2015

According to the company, the MCO 9 ECO closes one of the final gaps in the company’s range of machines and has been designed with the needs of customers in the contractor sector of the market. Its direct crusher drive allied to electric drives for the conveyors provides efficient operation.

Pride of place on Terex Finlay’s stand at the show will be occupied by its new J-1170 primary tracked jaw crusher with its key feature being an on-board detachable sizing screen. It can be ordered with either a Tier 3/Stage IIIA Cat C9 diesel delivering 261 kW (350 hp) or a Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB Scania unit delivering 257 kW (345 hp). Hydrostatic transmission of the jaw chamber offers operators reversible operation in the event of a blockage. The hydrostatic system also provides variable chamber speed to suit given applications. The crusher features hydraulic assist Chamber CSS (Closed Side Setting) adjustment, and can be changed in a matter of minutes.

The machine has a heavy duty variable speed vibrating grizzly feeder (VGF) with integrated pre-screen, providing an aggressive action to separate fines material efficiently. The variable speed VGF ensures continuous choke feeding of the crushing chamber for optimal productivity. Material from the pre-screen can be diverted to a stock pile via the on board by-pass conveyor, or join the crushed product on the main belt.

INTERMAT SHOWGUIDE

displaying its new compact heavy duty Warrior 600 tracked screen on its stand, which it says now gives it a range of six Warrior screens that together allow it to find a screening solution for customers with a wide range of requirements.

The Warrior 600 screen is highly versatile with its simple conversion from 3-Way Split to 2-Way Split mode that can be completed in minutes. It has been specifically designed for operators for whom versatility, manoeuverability and transportation are of key importance. The Warrior 600 also features a highly aggressive 2.5 x 1.2 m (8 x 4 ft) screenbox capable of 6g of acceleration. The high-strength, high amplitude, two-bearing screenbox promotes easy handling and separation of large items from material fines in recycling tasks, such as soils from tree stumps and logs, and fines and rock from overburden and blasted rock. User benefits include rapid set-up time and ease of operation aided by hydraulic folding side conveyors, rigid feed hopper sides and two speed tracks.

Commenting on it forthcoming launch, Colin Clements, Powerscreen brand leader said: “We are excited to launch our new Warrior 600 screen at Intermat 2015. At this important exhibition we will showcase some of the machine’s key features including its compact size which allows it to be transported in a shipping container and makes it easy to move between job sites at minimal cost. This machine demonstrates how we can meet the needs of the aggregates and recycling segments not just in France but across the world.”

ATTACHMENTSThe highlight on the Geith stand will be products from the company’s coupler range. These will be a new mechanical coupler for 2-4 tonne compact excavators that allows an attachment to be picked up and secured in a single movement, with an audio and two visual alerts confirming safe connection. Release is simple using the mechanism provided. Geith said the two further models will follow during 2015 for 1-2 tonne and 2-6 tonne machines.

Also on show will be a new coupler control system that features a simple and safe operating sequence. The IP65 and CE compliant device satisfies the present and developing safety requirements (ISO 13031).

The new compact design is complete with

a wiring harness for plug and play installation to save time and money. The new control box, mounting bracket and wiring harness will be supplied as standard in all full hydraulic hose kits.

A new range of compact tilt buckets that is available in a range of widths and capacities for 1.5 to 9 tonne carriers will also be on the stand. Features and benefits include an optimum pivotal design providing a 90° tilt (45° in either direction) and a single hydraulic cylinder with mud guard protection to protect the cylinder rod and hose fittings. Reversible bolt-on cutting edges and side cutters provide maximum wear resistance. High tensile pivot pins and web plate ensure low maintenance and reinforced bucket strength ,therefore maximising lifetime performance,

The final new product will be a new tilting coupler that combines Geith’s coupler with Helac’s PowerTilt suitable for carriers from 6

to 25 tonnes. The operator can safely change attachments from the cab and can increase productivity thanks to the tilting feature up to 180°. Less repositioning of the excavator is required when the machine is equipped with such a tool. The coupler provides both a front and rear safety locking mechanism to secure both attachment pins and a powerful spring activated safety lock system works in all types of severe environments.

Montabert will use Intermat to introduce a new multi-purpose hydraulic drifter, the HC95. The HC95 LA has been designed to replace another drifter already installed on a drilling rig to optimise performance, while the HC95 LM has been designed for underground drilling operations, with hammering together

D idcot A Power Station is a coal and gas-fired power station that ceased operation in early 2013. Designed

by architect Frederick Gibberd, construction of the power station, with its four 500 MWe generating units, was completed in 1968. Located on a 1.2 km2 (0.5 mile2) site, the main chimney is 200 m (650 ft) tall, with six cooling towers standing in two groups of three on the site at 114 m (375 ft) each tall.

Coleman has been involved in the decommissioning of Didcot A for approaching four years by the time D&Ri visited the site.

As the awarding of the contract for the demolition drew close, Coleman recognised that it needed to invest in equipment to carry out the work and required additional machines to carry out this heavy industrial project. The company went through a process of tendering against a specification it had prepared with four recognised suppliers of

demolition equipment. With the need for six machines identified, Coleman wanted maximum versatility and a class that could carry specific tool weights. Liebherr emerged as the supplier of choice, according to managing director Mark Coleman: “because it was able to supply the full fleet, the way we wanted it within a timescale we wanted, all under the Liebherr banner from cradle to grave, with every aspect of it covered, from delivery through to service and support” Three 956s, two 954s and a 974 (see box story) made up the final order that was placed.

Liebherr’s Darren Bennett said of the order: “The challenge we were given by Coleman was to supply them with machines that were a lot more versatile than just one machine for one tool, so we came up with a range of adaptations to allow us to take certain shears at certain heights and certain weights with the same connections that permits them to be used across the 956s, the 954s and also the 974. The maximum tool weight that can be used is the Labounty 7500 with a weight of around 14 tonnes. This can be used stick mounted or third member mounted on the 974, but it also has the versatility of being able to be used boom mounted on the 954s and 956s.”

By the time of D&Ri’s visit to the site, all six machines had been delivered with the last, the 974, arriving on site in early January 2015, and they are now at work to help Coleman to continue clearing the site.

ON SITEThe three southern cooling towers of Didcot A were demolished by explosives on 27 July 2014, with the implosion subcontracted out by Coleman to Robinson & Birdsell. Coleman wanted the demolition to take place between

03.00 and 05.00 am and the towers were eventually demolished at 05.01am. Despite the early hour of the implosion, the event proved a major draw for the local population, with several thousand turning up to view the removal of what had been major features of the local skyline.

Demolition then began on the core plant (coal plant, turbine hall, boilers and precipitators) in December 2014, and by the

time of D&Ri’s visit, the turbine hall had been almost completely cleared of plant. According to site manager John Foster, the initial work was external to the main plant. “With just three machines, we dismantled all the conveyor belts and removed the entire coal plant from the owner’s land. In addition, anything at height had to be removed before the nesting season started to ensure there were no delays caused to the demolition. The actual demolition really began in April 2014.”

John was relaxed about the challenge Coleman faces in carrying out the work, having been involved with pwer stations all

of his working life – first in their construction and now their demolition, but he went on: “One of the challenges we face is finding capable local operatives. Currently there are around 120 workers on site, with 55 of these being

our employees and the remainder working for our asbestos remediation sub-contractor OCS. At peak, there were 175 personnel on site, with most of the additional workers also working for OCS. We are currently operating 13 machines, including the new Liebherrs, although the job is such that we could just use 11. The additional ones give us cover in the event of machine downtime and should Coleman get busier and the machines be required on other sites, then we will transfer them across,” said John.

The scale of the demolition is impressive, with a substantial tonnage of metal to be processed and recycled. All arisings are cleaned and separated in the various

Heavy duty metal The flagship of the six Liebherr excavators delivered to Coleman & Company as a result of the company commencing work on the Didcot A power station demolition is this R974. The machine has been modified to carry a 14 tonne Stanley LaBounty MSD 7500R-SL demolition shear. To achieve this, Liebherr added a 6 m (19.7 ft) extension to the main boom and a 2.9 m (9.5 ft) stick fitted with a heavy duty super mass excavation cylinder. In addition, the machine sports uprated hydraulics and a special by-pass valve has been fitted on the shear to generate less back pressure and thereby improve fuel economy. The machine carries the same counterweight as used on the 43 m (141 ft) high reach version of the 974, giving an overall machine weight of 130 tonnes. Liebherr has rated the machine for full 360° operation, as is the case with all its demolition excavators. Similar modifed 974s have been supplied to French contractors Cardem and Brunel. The new machine now gives Coleman the capability to process heavy duty steel scrap from Didcot and other future industrial demolition projects.

Some 70,000 tonnes of boilers, flues, ducting and other elements will be removed by the time demolition is completed

waste streams. Non-ferrous materials are transported to a specialist recycler in Birmingham, with ferrous scrap similarly transported to Southampton. John said: “The copper, all non-ferrous metals currently go to Birmingham but it all depends who is paying the highest price for the scrap”.

In terms of concrete, the initial cooling tower implosions generated an estimated 30,000 tonnes and this has all been crushed on site and is now awaiting reuse. John said: “It is all now Type I – clean – and it will be used to make the site good during the redevelopment work”. It is currently understood that the site will be used for industrial units, although at one time there were reports that it might end up as a freight facility because of its adjacent rail links.

“Every element of the contract is challenging”, said John, “but with the team in here, sitting down, planning it, going out there, looking at it again – four people looking at is better than one – it almost routine. I have been involved with a lot of power stations but every time you walk into it, you see something different. You can get to the point where you are looking and not seeing the challenge but if you have someone else with you the

greater is the chance you have of finding the right solution. The problem is that it is all big stuff – the turbine hall contained four turbines with the generator at the end alone weighed 750 tonnes and we got that down from its support structure using a cut and pull technique where we cut the legs of the steel structure supporting it at the bottom. It’s not hard but it’s big and it’'s awkward. If you make a mistake, you can imagine the consequences. You have to take your time and it has to be planned right.”

In terms of accidents or incidents, the record on site has been excellent. John said: “The Coleman policy is that you go home from the work in the same condition that you arrived that morning. Considering the scale of the job, the number of incidents have been minimal.”

SITE REPORT

He went on: “the boiler house has to come down before we can blow the chimney since the plan is for the latter to fall across the site of the core plant. The clearance and demolition of the turbine hall is now completed, more or less. The roof is next then we prepare the bunker bays by preweakening them and taking the steel out and we will then pull them into the turbine hall. We will then clear the estimated 15,000 tonnes of steel and

at the same time prepare the boiler house, which will end up in the same place. By then, the precipitators should also have gone.”

The north set of cooling tower will pose a major challenge. They are scheduled to be imploded once the core plant has been cleared. Coleman faces two main complicating factors in successfully completing this phase of the project. Access to one side of the towers is restricted due to the presence of great

crested newts, a protected species in the UK, and in addition, they are in close proximity to an electricity sub-station. As a result, their implosion has to be timed within a 30 day period in 2016 when the substation will be shut down for routine maintenance.

In terms of completion of the full project, John told D&Ri: “In a perfect world it would have been nice to finish by the middle of 2016 but in reality it will be the end of that year. The challenges we face with the north set of towers are such that we can prepare them for blasting this year but access restrictions mean that it will be next year before they can be blown. And then there is the chimney [the tallest structure on the site] that will also have to come down.”

As discussed above, the implosion of the south towers proved a major draw for the local population, but John believes the north set will be less so. “The towers are so far into the site that you will not really see anything from the public roads – they will however see the boilerhouse when we do that. When we do the 200 m chimney – that will be the big one in terms of a spectator draw. It can be seen from far around, from the M40 motorway and the A32 road, so people are bound to gather for its implosion.”

What was obvious throughout was the quiet confidence of the entire Coleman team that they would successfully complete the demolition with relative ease, despite the challenges that the large and awkward plant and structures have thrown at them. ■

Coleman still has a considerable volume of power station plant and ancillaries to be removed

Goody opts for Volvo duoKent, UK, based contractor Goody

Demolition has taken delivery of two new Volvo demolition excavators that

both meet the latest Stage IV engine emission regulations.

The first machine, a 25 tonne class EC250E, has been specified for secondary demolition applications and has been supplied with the standard backhoe boom configuration, while the larger 30 tonne class EC300E has been modified by Kocurek Excavators to feature a modular boom joint and 22 m (72.2 ft) three piece high reach boom as well as a straight boom.

It also now features a titling cab with full FOGS protection and additional ‘cassette’ counterweight to ensure stability when operating at full height with a 2.5 tonne tool.

Both machines have been supplied with twin lock quick hitches, full guarding around the superstructures and additional hydraulic circuits to facilitate grab rotation for the wide range of demolition attachments used by Goody Demolition that includes shears, grapples and pulverisers. Power comes from a Volvo eight litre diesel that delivers 159 kW (213 hp) on the EC250E and 179 kW (240 hp) on the EC300E. ■

Cat has introduced four new hydraulic breakers in the E Series to replace their D Series predecessors. The 130 kg (286 lb) H35E, 250 kg (550 lb) H45E, 340 kg (748 lb) H55E and 380 kg (836 lb) H65E are available in two mounting configurations for installation on both Caterpillar and other carrier brands. All four are also available as silenced versions (with the ‘s’ designation following the model number) that use a fully enclosed housing to suppress noise.

They match auxiliary flows and pressures of Cat machines. Flat-top models allow versatility for installation on equipment made by other manufacturers. Pin-on models are available for the H55E and H65E in applications that require a dedicated hammer-equipped Cat machine.

The suspension system on the silenced models include buffers to absorb forces and isolate them from the machine and a suspension jack dampens vibration and sound. The result is quiet, reliable operation and reduced operator fatigue.

McCloskey teams up with Volvo PentaMobile crushing and screening producer McCloskey will now make use of Volvo Penta engines in its product ranges after a two year development process. Volvo Penta’s D8, D11 and D13 engines will be fitted to McCloskey’s impact and jaw crushers, with the D6 unit going into its screens and trommels.

These engines comply with Tier 4 Final/Stage 4 regulations without the need for either DPF or DOC.Over the last two years, regular meetings were held between the two companies with constant contact being maintained not only with

Volvo sales managers and engineers but also a business development manager.“That, for us, was one of Volvo Penta’s key selling points,” said John O’Neill, vice president of sales and marketing for McCloskey.

“We work closely with our customers in the research and development stages of all our products, and Volvo Penta showed the same commitment to listening to our requirements and delivering the right solution.”

Volvo Penta’s team of engineers also worked closely with McCloskey’s engineering department to ensure that an engine package was produced that fits McCloskey’s unique needs, with engine assemblies, including heavy-duty cooling packages, being customised for a perfect fit.

To further demonstrate its versatility and dedication, Volvo Penta mounted a skid to the bottom of the engine and heavy-duty cooling package so that the engine would slip right into the machine.

“Being attuned to our needs is a key requirement for our partners,” John went on. “Volvo Penta made sure the engines were perfectly suited to working in some of the harshest conditions worldwide, from the Arctic Circle to the heat of the outback in Australia.”

Two new excavators from KomatsuA ccording to Komatsu, its latest 25

tonne class tracked excavator, the Stage IV compliant PC240-11, features

a more environmentally friendly Komatsu engine, up to 6% improved fuel efficiency, an upgraded cab design and enhanced serviceability. Productivity is maximised and operating costs are reduced, said the company.

The Komatsu engine integrates Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) to further reduce NOx emissions using the AdBlue additive. With an advanced electronic control system that manages the air-flow rate, fuel injection, combustion parameters and after treatment functions, the engine optimises performance, reduces emissions, and provides advanced diagnostic capability. Customers benefit from lower fuel consumption with no loss of performance. Komatsu uses a Komatsu Variable Geometry Turbocharger (KVGT) and an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve for precise temperature and air management control and for longer component life.

The hydraulic system on the machine uses a closed centre load sensing hydraulic system that features Variable Speed Matching technology. This allows the engine speed to

adjust based on the hydraulic pump output for both light and heavy-duty applications. Additional enhancements have been made within the hydraulic system to reduce hydraulic loss, resulting in better efficiency.

The second new machine, the 8.5-8.8 tonne PC88MR-10, is a Stage IIIB compliant reduced radius tail swing unit that also features improved efficiency, lower fuel consumption, improved operator comfort and enhanced serviceability. It bridges the gap between compact and full sized excavators and can work in a wide variety of applications. ■

UK contractor Lawson Group has made a substantial fleet investment to assist it in the demolition of the former

GCHQ in Cheltenham to make way for a major residential development. Supplied by UK Cat dealer Finning, the new fleet consists of a Cat 374DL, two Cat 336ELs, a MP30 work tool and the Finning Finsight equipment monitoring service. The Cat 374DL excavator, complete with a heavily modified 3.8 m3 (135 ft3) bucket, is being used to rip apart the vast network of reinforced concrete tunnels and data cabling.

In addition to the new equipment, the business has also opted for a complete engine change out for its existing Cat 365CL excavator. These new and refurbished machines have been joined on the site by two Cat 323DL excavators and a Cat 962H wheel loader.

Commenting on the deal and the GCHQ project, Martin Wilson, managing director of Lawson Group, said: “This is a particularly challenging project, as it was not the above ground buildings we had to worry about, it was what awaited us below the ground. This

is why we opted to add the Cat 374DL to our fleet, as we required a really powerful piece of equipment to cope with this and additional secured work.”

“With our new additions, we have now grown our Caterpillar fleet to 14 units, strengthening our capabilities to offer customers not just demolition services, but complete site remediation, including material re-handling and recycling. We now have an 11 year ongoing relationship with Finning and Caterpillar, and with sustainability now so important in our industry, it is vital that our suppliers become an integral part of our business.”

Previously GCHQ was based at Bletchley Park, the home of the codebreakers who cracked the German military Enigma code. The move to Cheltenham’s Oakley Park site was prompted after GCHQ’s location

Lawson invests in Cats for GCHQ demolition

was picked up at the end of the 1940s and concerns were raised about the security of Bletchley Park.

Cheltenham hosted a range of positive opportunities that contributed to the move. While the current Headquarters is now based at the Benhall Cheltenham site in the building nicknamed “The Doughnut”, their former home has lain vacant since 2004 on the opposite side of town. As the Oakley Site developed it comprised over 30 buildings, with the most recognisable being the “Green Monster” building that is visible from most of the town.  ■

Power to the peopleChicago Pneumatic has launched a new range of generators that it says have been designed to provide a safe and stable power supply for every kind of worksite in the shape of the CPFG range. The new range offers two product lines – the Pro Line and the Standard line.

The former includes Professional, Advanced and Advanced+ models that the company said provides powerful performance for round-the-clock intensive heavy-duty applications with different functionality levels, depending on user requirements. The Standard line, for occasional use, contains a simple, straightforward petrol generator.

CPFG Professional models are designed for continuous usage and available either with a petrol or diesel engine. Users are protected by an optional Earth Leakage Relay (ELR) in both, while Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) is an option for the petrol-engine unit that ensures consistent electrical output.

The CPPG Advanced generator, again in petrol and diesel versions, is built for intensive, all day operation. The generator exhibits more advanced features and additional protection to extend its life expectancy and safety, making it particularly well suited to the rigours of the rental market. Alongside AVR, the CPPG Advanced model protects its users with an isometer protection and thermal protection circuit breaker, as well as incorporating an intuitive instrumentation panel, electric key start and a number of alarm and shutdown options.

The CPPG Advanced+ generator is enclosed and soundproofed for the most demanding, dusty or heavily populated locations, as well as complying with European noise regulations.

With the introduction of the GXT 225, GXT 1555 and GXT 2055 straight and rotator models, Genesis Attachments now offers 18 separate models in its XT mobile shear range designed for 12 to 285 tonne class excavators. The GXT 225 straight model weighs 1,910 kg (4,200 lb) with a minimum carrier weight of 11.4 tonnes, with the rotator weighing 2,228 kg (4,900 lb) for carriers from 13.7 tonnes.

The GXT 1555 straight weighs 10,460 kg (23,000 lb) for 50 tonne carriers and larger, with the rotator weighing 12,160 kg (26,750 lb) for 66 tonne carriers and above. The 2055 straight weighs 14,546 kg (32,000 lb) and is for carriers weighing 66 tonnes or more, with the rotator weighing in at 16,455 kg (36,200 lb) for 80 tonnes and above.

Allied Gator has introduced a new tip system for its MT range of mobile shears in the shape of the patented Stealth Tip, which is designed to provide greater piercing performance while

lowering operational and maintenance costs. The new tip is an assembly designed to

engage and retain a pair of hard-wearing replaceable inserts that

are fully weld-maintainable, allowing them to be resurfaced

and reused many times. The Stealth Tip does not compromise the integrity of the shear knife because it is an independent weld-on component that can quickly be replaced should damage ever occur.

Lawson Group bought this Cat 374DL specifically for the GCHQ contract

Kobelco’s Generation 10With an arrival date in Europe of April 2015, Kobelco’s Generation 10 Stage IV compliant diesels deliver greater performance and efficiency in the working environment when compared to the previous Generation 9 equivalent that they will replace, said Kobelco. In H-mode (heavy work), work volume increases by 6.7% for the same level of fuel consumption. In S (normal work) and Eco-modes, fuel consumption is reduced by 6.1%.

Clean and powerful operating performance with greatly enhanced working hours and total working life of the machine also enhance cost efficiency. Serviceability is further improved with several key updates including the introduction of a new compact and easily replaceable canister-type hydraulic oil return filter and a new specification air cleaner inner

Kobelco’s Stage IV compliant Generation 10 machines are claimed to offer improved performance on reduced fuel consumption

element. New operator accessible diagnostics via the cabin monitor assist to ensure work continuity, such examples are on-screen and audible warnings for hydraulic oil temperature and clogged oil filter.

Generation 10 safety cabs on the 20-35 tonne models have been revised to include control levers with a lighter feel, a new ‘lock’ lever and control lever box. Additional air-

conditioning vents and revised rear storage tray further complement

in-cab comfort. ■

UK contractor Coleman & Company is using a specially developed remote control JCB excavator sporting a 4

tonne multiprocessor to remove reinforced concrete floors during ongoing demolition work at Birmingham New Street Station. The machine is a 21 tonne excavator that combines a JCB JS190 upper structure with a JS220LC undercarriage and rubber track pads that allows it to deploy a 4 tonne multiprocessor without exceeding a gross machine weight of 25 tonnes.

Coleman is now in its fifth year on site and the current phase requires the removal of 6,000 tonnes of mass reinforced concrete during 2014 and 2015. Some beams weigh as much as 90 tonnes and are 2.5 m (8.2 ft) wide and 1.5 m (5 ft) deep. The work is taking place directly beneath the newly constructed, multi million pound atrium steelwork structure that must be protected from any impact from the demolition work. It is also taking place within a live construction site while 140,000 people continue to travel through the station daily.

Coleman & Company technical manager Chris Holland said: “We asked JCB to design a bespoke machine that could carry out specific tasks in high risk and technically challenging environments. The stakes are very high at New Street given we’ll be operating above 12 live train lines carrying thousands of passengers per day.”

The new machine is expected to work on the project for the next nine months. Therafter, it will provide Coleman with a unique tool for use in any future highly complex demolition tasks. ■

Spray in controlA Californian recycler is using a DustBoss DB-45 atomised water mist generator to control dust at its Chula Vista facility, which sees dozens of dump trucks deliver recovered road surfacing and demolition waste every day. Reclaimed Aggregates Inc, formed in 2005 as a subsidiary of Pavement Recycling Systems, added the Chula Vista site to its two other locations in Colton and Lancaster in 2009.

The former is now its largest location, where it processes concrete and asphalt. Material is offloaded onto a 61m (220) square dry earth receiving area and immediately moved by front loader to the crusher or into storage piles, creating a large volume of dust as a result. RAI first tried a sprinkler system to control this dust, which was causing issues for adjacent businesses, but this solution just saturated the material to create mud but dust was still an issue.

RAI then tried the DustBoss DB-45 and found its range well suited to the size of the area requiring dust management. The unit is able to throw its atomised plume 46 m (150 ft) to deliver effective dust control over a 1,115 m2 (12,000 ft2)) area. When equipped with optional 359° oscillation, the design can cover as much as 16,875 m2 (74,000 ft2) from a single location.

A DustBoss DB-45 is providing effective dust control at a concrete and asphalt recycling centre in California, USA

Cologne, Germany, located Max Becker Trading GmbH has recently taken delivery of a new Sennebogen 850R Special Electro, which is being used to charge scrap metal shears as well as for general sorting. The 850 R Special is fitted with a 250 kW (336 hp) electric motor that saves 50% in energy and operating costs compared to the diesel-powered machine it has replaced. The reach of over 20 m (66 ft) covers an area of just under 1,300 m2 (13,994 ft2). Thanks to the crawler undercarriage with a 4.9 m (16 ft) track width, the machine is extremely safe but can also be easily moved over the entire compound. The cab has been raised by 5 m (16.4 ft) through the use of a pylon that, combined with the 1 m rigid cabin elevation, gives clear visibility over the working envelope during shear charging duties.

Remote in controlThe remotely controlled machine developed by JCB for Coleman & Company has a JS190 upper mounted on a larger JS220LC undercarriage to keep the weight, including 4 tonne tool, below 25 tonnes

First ‘Gallowgate Twin’ shrinksDespe’s TopDownWay deconstruction system is proving effective during the demolition of the first of the ‘Gallowgate Twins’ high rise tower blocks, Whitevale Tower. D&Ri originally reported that its ‘twin’, Bluevale Tower, will be brought down using the system in 2016. We now understand that both towers, the highest residential towers in Scotland at 31 floors and 85 m (279 ft) tall, will both come down using the system during 2015.

Progress is currently on schedule, with the structure of Whitevale now reduced by five floors, creating a visible difference in height between the twins.

The project sees two past winners of the World Demolition Awards working together in collaboration to deliver a bespoke demolition solution to a complex project. Scottish tower block expert Safedem and Italian contractor Despe have worked closely together to bring the tech nology to the UK for the first time.

Safedem managing director William Sinclair stated: “the safe and controlled progress on site is an endorsement of our decision to utilise the TopDownWay system. Interest has been high and we have received a number of enquiries from clients across the UK.”

Progress has been good on Whitevale Tower in Glasgow, with Despe’s TopDownWay system being used by Safedem to bring the structure down

German contractor AVG-Nord went for using rotary drum cutters when faced with the challenge of demolishing

a World War II bunker on Hamburg’s Wielandstraße, with the company being contracted to remove the bunker’s ceiling, two walls and parts of the remaining two walls, With dimensions of 48 x 28 x 22 m (157 x 92 x 72 ft), the bunker was one of the largest of its kind and offered shelter to more than 2,000 people at a time during the war.

The first factor complicating the demolition was the physical nature of the structure, which featured a 3.5 m (11.5 ft) thick roof and walls of

the same dimensions, which given the bunker’s nature also were very heavily reinforced with steel rebar. In addition, the bunker’s close proximity to other structures required that the demolition had no physical impact in terms of damage being caused to these. Finally, very strict noise and vibration limits were in force for work in the area, meaning careful selection of the demolition methodology was required.

AVG-Nord selected two Erkat ER 1500 rotary drum cutters mounted on 32 tonne carriers. Demolition started at the top of the bunker where the drum cutters cut their way through the roof and then worked down the inside of the building. AVG did not remove the entire wall but left a thin layer on the outside, removed at the end of the project, that helped to external minimise noise levels as well as containing dust and any debris that might have escaped from the interior.

The drum cutters worked their way through the concrete, achieving an production rate of between 5 to 6 m3/h (177 to 275 ft3/h). ■

Preston, UK, based Bradley Demolition Ltd has taken delivery of its first ever Volvo excavator, a Stage IV compliant 30 tonne EC300E that is powered by a Volvo 8 litre diesel developing 179 kW (240 hp). The machine has been equipped with a heavy duty screen guard and FOGS protection for the operator’s compartment, and the optional x3 hydraulic rotation circuit has been included. Bradley has also added a Lehnhoff Variolock quick coupler that besides attaching the tool to the machine also automatically quick couples the hydraulic services as the hitch is engaged.

The first ever Rockster R900 mobile impact crusher in New Zealand, supplied by dealer Equip2 Processing Solutions, has been purchased by Mulching, Crushing and Screening. The machine is currently working at Winstone Aggregates Whitehall Quarry just outside Cambridge, but the MCS will also be used for the Department of Conservation building access roads, helipads and other infrastructure in remote and difficult to access terrain. In the past, MCS has had to move both a jaw and cone crusher as well a screen to these locations whereas the R900 can be used as a standalone unit, substantially reducing transportation costs.

well attended by delegates and supported by sponsoring suppliers to the industry.

In the IDE’s case, incoming president Duncan Rudall welcomed more than

200 delegates to the conference, after which the day’s programme commenced. One presentation was of particular note to the audience and this was made by Jason Anker

MBE, who is behind the Proud 2b Safe campaign. Paul suffered a major

injury while working on a roofing contract that led him to be confined to a wheelchair for almost 20 years. He recounted frankly and honestly his experiences in dealing with his injury and resulting descent into drug and alcohol mis-use. His stated purpose in doing so is to encourage others to speak out against dangerous working practices they might be asked to follow and to, most importantly, ensure their own safety while at work.

In Germany one week later, the Deutscher Abbruchverband’s event took place in the Hotel Intercontinental. This gathering, largely of the German speaking industry, is in D&Ri’s view the largest single gathering of industry professionals to take place anywhere in the world. This year, more than 750 delegates, excluding partners, (including for the first

of Demolition Engineers holding its traditional Spring Seminar at the Royal Armouries museum in Leeds and the Deutscher Abbruchverband staging the annual Berlin Demolition Conference.

Presidential change at the NFDCThe National Federation of Demolition Contractors held its Annual General Meeting at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Friday March 13. The meeting saw the biannual succession of office bearers, with Martin Wilson taking over the chain of office from William Sinclair. Martin was in turn succeeded as vice president by Andrew Forshaw, with Paul Brown stepping into his post of second vice president.

The event was also the stage for the NFDC to recognise the skills of individual and corporate members, with a number of 2015 Awards bestowed on worthy recipients. Full details are available on the NFDC website, but in brief the winners were as follows. ■ Demolition Operative: John Carpenter of Central Demolition Ltd with a Highly

time one from the USA) and some 95 sponsoring companies were in attendance. The event always features a packed programme and this year was no exception, with 17 technical (in some cases highly technical) presentations being made over the course of the day.

One was of particular note, and that was from EDA general secretary Jose Blanco, who’s topic is one that will impact the industry EU-wide. Jose spoke about the forthcoming requirement for an professional competency card system that will become mandatory for all ‘trades’- the classification the demolition industry falls under according to the Commission - that will allow a citizen of a member state to work as a recognised competent person in any other member country of the EU. There are no doubt going to be major challenges ahead for the industry in Europe to establish a system that will meet the Commission’s requirements while still respecting the differing training and evaluation processes that are already in place in many member states! ■
