De-Snaring Report for September, 2012
Ziwani Team
Monthly Summary
The team resumed from its September time off and relocated to Maktau base where patrols targeted the Ziwani team’s areas.
Surprisingly the poachers have shifted their activities from the park to the community sanctuaries and ranches where the team managed to lift more than 15 cables snares targeting big game and destroyed three shooting platforms for elephant poaching.
The current drought in Tsavo has not spared any living being, and there are clear evidence of the effect of prolonged drought. The Team saw many wild animals in very poor condition and found two young buffalo carcasses at Taita sanctuary, both succumbed to the drought. Thankfully the team managed to save a life, and rescued a buffalo trapped in mud, having gotten trapped desperately searching for some water. The team is optimistic that come October the rainy season will set in; giving Tsavo and the wildlife which inhabit this ecosystem much needed relief.
Report by Paul Kamau-Ziwani-Burra acting team leader.
