Welcome to Colorado Springs KIDS Magazine!

I t may be hard to believe, but summer is winding down & the kids will be heading back to school. The nights will soon get a little cooler and we’ll be trading in the shorts and t-shirts for jeans and sweatshirts. It seems like summer always goes too fast.

Are your kids dreading going back to school? There’s a lot of pressure these days to fit in. If your kids lack confidence, be sure to check out our article this month by Mae Reaves on page 4. She shares with us some tips to send your kids back to school with confidence.

One of the back to school rituals is packing a backpack for your kids. In this month’s Health Notes column, Pediatrician David Koukol with Colorado Springs Health Partners offers some great advice on picking and packing their backpacks. Check it out on page 15.

We hope your summer was great and you and your kids have an amazing school year! Scott Winkleman Publisher/Editor

Send Your Kids Back to School with Confidence

By Mae Reaves

B ack-to-school can be hard. The pressure to fit in and impress some-times stresses out our kids. But we, as parents, can make it easier on them by encouraging their self-expression in both attitude and

dress. As counter-intuitive as it may seem, the surest way to fit in is to be confidently true to oneself! How do we help our children to under-stand this and put it into practice? Here are some simple methods with which you can help boost your kids' confidence levels: 1. Positive reinforcement: It seems like common sense, but sometimes

we forget how much a small word of praise can mean to our children. We are their guardians and guides in this world, and our approval tells them they're on the right track, making us proud. Be careful not to overdo it, lest your praise loses some of its weight, but next time your child does something that impresses you, say so! Specifics help. In-stead of, "Good job," try, "Great work setting the table, Aidan."

2. Listen: Take time out of your busy day to address a question your child asks. Make eye contact; make conversation. Engagement like this lets a child know he or she is worth your time and attention. It won't hurt you to set aside your iPhone or magazine for a few mo-ments, and the impact your affirmation of your child's value has is worth it. Affirm your child's feelings without offering judgment ("I understand you must be sad because you can't go to the sleepover. We all get sad sometimes."). This lets them know that their emotions are normal and healthy. In addition, share your own feelings in a calm statement of fact ("I'm feeling sad because grandma is sick."). Our kids learn by example, and teaching them how to effectively express themselves is key to their future success and fulfillment.

3. Set limits: Make your expectations of your child very clear and follow them through. Make sure you are consistent and that your child knows the consequences of breaking rules before they're broken. ("If you don't wear your helmet while riding your bike, you'll lose the privilege to ride it.") Don't buy into parenting philosophies that decry rules. Children thrive on structure. Avoid being overbearing, but know that clear, established boundaries help a child feel safe, secure, and loved.

4. Encourage self-expression: Give your child ample opportunities to express themselves in every aspect of their lives. Encourage them to write, draw, sing, dance, run, play, and imagine. Guide them in what is appropriate, but let them define their own style. When a child is shown that his or her opinion matters and that he has the power to make choices, this notion instills a sense of self-worth. Let your child choose an entire outfit for the first day of school in which they feel fantastic. Go so far as to spend some time with your child designing custom, original school gear, so he feels he's really created something special.

Growing up can be hard, but it doesn't have to be. A little boost of confi-dence from a respected adult figure can go a long way. Spend time with your children and let them know you value their opinions. Let them build self-confidence by making minor decisions for themselves like what to wear, what to read, and/or where to go to dinner once in a while. Prepare them for the school year with lots of love and encouragement and remember: confidence starts at home! Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Mae_Reaves

Quick & Easy School Day Breakfasts

A s we head back to school this month, sometimes getting a healthy break-fast into your kids in the morning is the hardest part of the routine. It does-n't have to be time-consuming. Check out

these quick ways to start the day off right!

Oatmeal Mash-up • 1/4 oats • 1/4 milk of your choice-almond,

skim, 2%, soy, rice • 1/4 water

Mix together and microwave for 2 minutes. Add 1/2 banana and mash with a fork. Add 1 Tbsp nut butter (almond, peanut, cashew, sun-flower seed butter are all great, too!) Mix well. Add 1/4 cup fresh berries, or 2 tbsp dried cranberries, raisins, or other dried fruit.

Overnight Oats-this is great to get started the night before! Combine equal part oats, yogurt, and milk. Try 1/4 c oats, vanilla yogurt, and almond milk! Soak in a container in the fridge overnight. In the morning, stir well and heat in microwave if desired. Add in fresh or dried fruit, nuts, and brown sugar, if desired.

Breakfast Cookie, adapted from The Fitnessista

• 1/4 c oatmeal • 1 Tbsp almond butter, peanut butter, cashew butter, or sunflower

seed butter • Protein powder, if desired

Add a few tablespoons of milk, or thinned yogurt, and stir well. Add 1/2 mashed banana, applesauce, dried fruits, packed pumpkin, any-thing you'd like! Stir together until thoroughly mixed. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, or any other spice you'd like, if desired. Flatten onto a small plate and refrigerate overnight. Eat with a spoon!

Smoothies A favorite: 1/2 banana, 1 peach, 2 cups mixed frozen berries, 1/2 or-ange juice, 1 cup ice, vanilla or strawberry protein powder. Makes 2 servings. Blend and enjoy on the go!

Ways to save time on other breakfast favorites

• Scramble eggs and precook in skillet, pouring egg into large round cookie cutter. These egg "discs" are great to pull out of the fridge and throw on an English muffin.

• Pre-make larger quantities of pancakes or waffles and add protein powder to the batter. Freeze in single-serve bags and then reheat in the toaster.

• Make waffle sandwiches: spread peanut butter and sliced bananas in between two waffles for a quick, portable breakfast.

3 Year Old Autistic Painter Shocks the World!

T here is a new artist whose work is creating a huge buzz in the art world. A solo exhibition is being planned

and paintings are going for big money. But who is this emerging talent whose work is being compared to Monet's Waterlilies? Three year old Iris Halmshaw, whose painting talent was discovered by her parents when they were trying to find an outlet for her au-tism, is the new talent the world is watching. Her parents were desperate to find something their child loved, after struggling with autism and its hold it had on their daughter. Iris found focus, solace, and happiness with paint! Do you know any outlets for children with autism that surprise you?

Easy End of Summer Imaginative Activities

A s the summer winds down you might be grasping at straws to fend off bore-

dom before the routine of school begins. Turn off the TV; opt instead for a month of outdoor activities and imaginative play with your kids. Children and teens should get around 60 minutes of physical activity every day, notes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Try a few of these fun activities to galvanize the lazy days of summer. 1. Stage a Scavenger Hunt - Put together a list of items to be

found around the house. Give each child a paper lunch bag with their name on it. First person to find all the items wins.

2. Play What’s in the Bag - Place an item of unusual shape and texture inside a sealed paper lunch bag. Using only their sense of touch, the children must guess what’s inside and write it on a folded piece of paper. You might use an ugly tomato, a piece of dry cat food, an oven baster, or other objects with stimulat-ing tactile sensations.

3. Have a Summer Snow Day - For younger children keeping you company in the kitchen, try this. Sprinkle a thin layer of flour on a large rimmed baking sheet. Let them sit at the table and make roads in the “snow” with their Matchbox cars.

4. Create a World - Creative play is an integral part of a child’s development. Initiate the creative process by reusing found objects around the house and outdoors to create a fairy garden outside. Help your child create a whole world for the magical fairies and watch in wonder as their imagination takes flight. Try using moss, sticks, leaves, coconut shells, seashells, and palm leaves.

5. Paint the Fence - Equip your youngster with a wide paint-brush and a bucket of watered-down watercolor paint in a vi-brant hue. Let them paint the fence or the side of the house. Hose off with water the next day.

Mom's Top Kitchen Tricks!

W e all could use new short cuts - espe-cially in the kitchen! Here are a few tips and tricks to save you precious time in

the kitchen: 1. Worried about mold? Once you discover

mold in bendy straws and sippy cups, you spend so much extra time scrubbing and wor-rying over your kids’ favorite cup. Try putting dish detergent on a pipe cleaner and using that to get up into all the nooks and cran-nies and rinse well. If you are worried that the water doesn't wash out the mold, try a drop of rubbing alcohol to dry it all up. Then rinse with warm water one last time right before using.

2. Use a pizza cutter for more than pizza! Don't hold out on that slicer for just pizza! Use it on sticky breakfast items like pancakes, waffles, sticky bun cake, or even desserts for an easy slice!

3. Freeze Juice Boxes to use to keep lunches cold. I often freeze yogurt tubes, but to keep the whole lunch box cold for hours, freeze a juice box or water bottle overnight and add to the lunch the next morning.

4. Clean with olive oil. Put some olive oil on a soft cloth and just polish up all of your stainless steel appliances with it. Baby oil does the job well, too!

5. Smell like garlic? For cleaning smelly hands after chopping onions or garlic, just rub them on a stainless steel spoon. The steel is supposed to absorb the odor. Also- try fresh coffee beans in your hands to absorb!

5 Year Old Dies after Playing with Brother

T his is such a tragic story reported out of Louisiana.

Allegedly a 13 year old brother who was babysitting his 5 year old sis-ter was wrestling with her using moves he said he saw on World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and she passed away from injuries.

The little girl suffered broken ribs, internal bleeding, and liver lacera-tions from the brutal bashing at home in Louisiana.

The two were apparently wrestling on a bed and he reportedly slammed her into the bed repeatedly, punched her in the stomach, jumped on her back and elbow-dropped her.

Later, the little girl said she wasn't feeling well and went to go brush her teeth. A half an hour later, brother found her in pain on the floor.

He called 911, but unfortunately it was too late.

The little girl had no outward injury that was visible and the brother confessed to carrying out the moves.

He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Do you think 13 is too young to babysit a 5 year old? Do you think kids understand some of the things like WWE that they see on TV?

W ith the new school year around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about the back-to-school shopping list, and a new backpack

may be one of the many items on the list.

You may search several different stores for the “perfect” backpack. Perfect is relative - your child may “have to have” a favorite cartoon character, color or style, while your choice depends on price and durability. However, when shopping or using a backpack, another important consideration is your child’s health, namely stress on their back, neck, and shoulders.

Backpacks should be designed to distribute the weight of the load among some of the body’s strongest muscles. Regardless of how well a back-pack is constructed or padded, those that are too heavy or are worn incor-rectly can cause possible problems for children and teenagers. Backpacks not used as they are meant to be may injure muscles and joints. This can lead to back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as posture problems. Fol-low these simple tips when you and your child are choosing a backpack:

• Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a pad-ded back.

• Pack light. Organize the backpack to use all of its compartments. Pack heavier items closest to the center of the back. The backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of your child’s body weight.

• Always use both shoulder straps. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can strain muscles.

• If your school allows, consider a rolling backpack. This type of backpack may be a good choice for students who must tote a heavy load. Remember that rolling backpacks still must be carried up stairs, and they may be difficult to roll in bad weather or across uneven ground in the schoolyard.

If you have questions or concerns about your child’s posture or current back, neck, or shoulder issues, consult your pediatrician and be sure to mention their current backpack and other loads your children may carry. With a few adjustments, you can help your child manage carrying their workload– no matter how much homework they have to take with them. Happy shopping!

A fter two children, my schedule expanded along with my feet. And after divorce, my once perfect-fit Cinderella routine squeezed into two-sizes-too-small Gucci slides purchased for a pittance on e-Bay.

My never-ending To-Do list felt like a too-tight shoe, no longer fitting into the life I wore. Every day shrank an entire size before noon. I was no longer a matching pair. Yet, every day I forced myself to put on that To-Do list and perform the New Shoe Hobble Tango. As a single parent, how can you adapt when you dread stuffing your life into too-tight shoes? When your feet hurt . . . everything hurts. Checking off every responsibil-ity on my daily To-Do list was more difficult than searching for a pair of discontinued high heels unavailable anywhere in my size. Instead of taking off my too-small shoe, I grinned and bore the pain. The other shoe I lost left me to cope as best I could and I was no longer living up to my expectations. The inability to complete every item on my list at the end of the day or week left me depressed and shamed. I tortured myself on five-inch spikes, tripping here and falling there. My To-Do list needed another column — a To-Don’t list. Walk around until your shoes stretch. My shoes were too small to accom-modate the single-parenting responsibilities that were too large. How would I find the right shoe to master the New Shoe Hobble Tango? I tried on many brands, styles, and colors. A shoe that felt comfortable in the store didn’t after a few wearings. My To-Do and To-Don’t lists teeter-tottered every day. Some days I pushed extra hard and caught up on my To-Do list. Other days exhaustion or emergencies moved everything down to the To-Don’t list. Even though single parenting never felt like a perfect fit, over time I stretched into parenting alone. My single-parenting shoes became more comfortable as I accepted what I could and couldn’t accomplish. Find a comfortable shoe. When mourning the loss of life as we knew it or wanted it to be, be kind to yourself. Grieving drains energy to function. At the end of every week, the undone To-Do’s nagged at me, filling me with shame and guilt that I wasn’t strong enough, smart enough, organized enough, motivated enough. Each Saturday, every To-Do moved to the To-Don’t column. I tossed off my achy-breaky shoes and soaked for hours in a hot bath with a good book, dark chocolate, and hot tea. Shriveled, prune-like fingers and toes revitalized my body and spirit. Your feet change over the years. Shoes I once loved littered my closet and were no longer wearable. Instead of moving items to the To-Don’t list, I decluttered my To-Do lists. In another life, I scheduled large blocks of time each week to organize and clean my house. As a single mom, I worked several jobs leeching time to maintain an immaculate home. Fifteen minutes each day to clean sufficed. If the shoe fits . . . Overworked? Overwhelmed? Overintense? When your To-Do list swells, engage in a creative sanity saver. When I sewed new curtains, upholstered a chair or painted a room, I left the laundry, dishes, dust, and piles to breed. If your shoe is too tight, fling it off. Slip on the To-Do or To-Don’t lists that fit you best. Propelled into single parenthood with a four-year-old son and a nine-month

-old son, a proud Gold Star mom, Scoti helps solo parents face their fears

with courage and embrace new life. She’s been published in The New York

C ould you turn the fan on, now close the window, no turn the heat on, now open the window. It’s a constant battle maintaining

a suitable temperature for everyone in the home. When in the end, it’s really a personal preference. But one thing that we can both agree on is how we love getting into the hot tub! It’s not so much the heat, but the relaxa-tion that comes with immersing in a soothing

pool of bubbles with a glass of wine and chocolate covered straw-berries on the side. But of late, we’ve wanted to extend this comfort indoors with the purchase of an infrared sauna. I’ve been researching this for some time and would like a 3-5 person sauna with open and space-saving amenities. You see, I’m extremely claustrophobic and space con-scious in regards to placement of the sauna. So I’ve determined a corner sauna would provide the size I need and lots of windows would avoid claustrophobic tendencies. I’ve looked at those boxy saunas, even those with windows, and they just don’t work for me, especially once you see a corner one. Oh, and it needs to be made out of red cedar…I love the smell of cedar! Well luck has it that the ‘sauna Santa’ must have gotten a hold of my wish list, because I found exactly what I wanted at the wholesale cost of $2839! It even includes a CD player and so much more! This sauna is called the “Victorian 4-5 person corner,

infrared carbon sauna in red cedar”. Saferwholesale.com carries both indoor and outdoor saunas. Their products vary in size, wood selections, accessories, and price. They also carry steam showers, which is something to consider when remodeling the bathroom. Upon visiting their site you will be amazed at the wholesale pricing of their saunas. So if you’re looking for a way to take the stress off and simply relax, visit http://www.saferwholesale.com/category-s/45.htm or give them a call at 1-866-606-3991. Stress Buster Savings

H ere is a great and creative way to celebrate the back-to-school season! Plus, it uses recycled items! You could also pass out these pencil cans filled with treats as favors at a birthday party.

Materials

• 8 1/2" X 11" sheets of cardstock in pink, gray,

yellow and tan

• Clean and empty cardboard tube (we used a Pringles can)

• Double-sided tape or glue stick

• Scissors

• Hot glue gun (for adult use only) Instructions

1. Trim the gray cardstock to a strip 1/2" by 10", the yellow cardstock to a strip 8" by 10", the pink cardstock to 2 1/2" by 10" and the tan to a half circle with a 7 1/4" diameter.

2. Adhere the yellow cardstock to the outside of the cardboard tube with a glue stick or double-sided tape.

3. Adhere the pink cardstock around the base of the tube for the eraser end of the pencil; it will overlap the yellow, and that's fine.

4. Adhere the gray strip over the seam made by the yellow and pink cardstock.

5. Curl the tan half circle into a cone and hot glue onto the can's lid. 6. Color in the "lead" with a black marker.

That's it! Now you can fill it up with whatever goodies your heart desires. Happy back to school season!

U se books to help start word games or conversations with your children. When you talk with your children, and especially when they talk to you, they learn so much about how sentences

are constructed or how stories have a beginning, middle, and end. Here are some books to get the chattering started.

Night Light by Nicholas Blechman is a unique counting book about vehicle lights. Each number is contained in a question on a pitch black die cut page with only the num-ber of lights showing through. When the page is turned, it reveals the vehicle lights. The book could be used as a great guessing game to help children figure out what might be on the next page. This clever addition to the multitude of counting books is sure to be a winner with vehicle lovers of all ages.

In the wordless picture book, Chalk by Bill Thompson, three children discover a bag of chalk on the playground. When they use it to draw pictures on the asphalt, their pic-tures magically come to life. They realize this too late when the dinosaur they drew looms over the playground. Have your children tell you the story. What they come up with will surprise you!

Making up stories is so fun! Leo finds out how much fun it can be when he throws his ball and knocks Mr. Zinger’s hat right off his head. Mr. Zinger sits down with Leo and proceeds to tell a fantastic tale, with Leo’s help of course. When Leo goes back to playing with his ball, he discovers a new friend and new stories to tell. Read Mr.

Zinger’s Hat by Cary Fagan to start some new storytelling of your own! Nelly May Has Her Say by Cynthia De-Felice is a whacky read aloud for children 5-8 years old. Spunky Nelly May goes to work for a man who uses silly names for normal everyday things, like long-legged limberjohns for pants or stompinwhackers for boots. This causes a lot of hilarious trouble when she tries to communicate with him. This would be a great book for families to use as a kicking-off point for playing with words at home. Non-fiction books are great books to explore as a family. The Eyewitness book Spy by Richard Platt is a great book to read together. Spy – Just saying the word out loud gives you a feeling of excitement and suspense. Who are they? How do you become a spy? What is a mole? What kinds of exciting gadgets do spies use in their work? This Eyewitness book is full of amazing photographs of spies and their gadgets, real secret weapons and famous spies from history. Visit the useful spy websites found in the back of the book. You never know where a spy will turn up next. School is starting soon! Our librarians have put together an amazing website just for you! Visit the Kids’ Web at www.ppld.org to find links for help with school work like: Homework Help, Find a Good

Book and Colorado History. Explore it and if you have any ques-tions, the PPLD librarians are just a click or phone call away. Ask us! We’d be glad to help!

Knowledge is Power! Reading is Fun!

R eflex: Math Fact Fluency is a website that helps kids learn math facts by playing games. It teaches addition and subtraction for numbers 0-10 and multiplication and division for numbers 0-12.

It's best for kids who already understand basic math operations and need practice to improve speed and accuracy. The website helps build math fact fluency, which is essential to success in mathematics. Kids gain fluency by learning "fact families," in which they focus on a set of facts for a group of numbers. Subtraction and addition are paired and taught together. Similarly, multiplication and division facts are taught as a family. This strategy helps kids understand inverse operations and reduces the total number of math facts they have to learn. Reflex is a creative and engaging way to build fluency in all four math operations.

A character named Crabby walks kids through the set-up. Kids then answer a set of questions to determine their starting fluency. Each game starts with Coach Penny teaching them a new math concept. Kids practice that concept by answering math facts to create "Coach Penny’s Picture Puzzle." Then they play a game like "Ninja to the Stars," where they guide a ninja up platforms by getting math facts right. Only by answering math facts quickly do they make it to the stars. Finally, kids take the "Speed Cube Challenge," an assessment game where kids answer math facts to open a cube.

As kids progress, they earn tokens to redeem for online "prizes." Kids track their growth using the Progress Tree, and parents can view individual reports showing usage and fluency gained. The website makes learning math fun and engaging.

D ear Greg,

I can’t believe that the end of summer is already within sight! School will be starting again in a couple of weeks, and (needless to say) my children aren’t entirely happy about the idea of losing their freedom and settling back into the daily grind. Is there anything I can do to help smooth the transi-tion? What would you recommend? Sue

D ear Sue,

Believe it or not, your attitude can be an important factor in this equation. If you can generate a positive atmosphere of anticipation, possibly even of celebration, as the academic year approaches, you may wake up one morning to find that your enthusiasm is actually rubbing off on the kids. The key is to be intentional about giving them reasons to look forward to the back-to-school experience. How do you do that? I suggest you begin by talking it up as much as possi-ble. Initiate conversations with them about the coming school term. Remind them of old friends they’ve missed seeing over the summer. Stir up some excitement about the new friends and new activities they can expect to en-counter this year. Find out everything you can about their teacher or teachers and the subjects they’ll be studying. Come up with a plan to help them start forming positive mental images of what lies ahead. You’d be surprised what a difference your words and your outlook can make. If a child continues to show signs of being overly anxious about school, be sure to listen carefully to his specific concerns and respond reassuringly to his fears by helping him work through ways to address what he’s worried about. Shopping for school supplies also can do wonders when it comes to fostering enthusiasm. New backpacks and school clothes, fresh paper and notebooks,

shiny new pencils and pens – all of this can boost a kid’s morale and bolster his or her self-image in a huge way. If finances are limited in your house-hold, you may be able to tap into local programs that sponsor giveaways of free school supplies. Focus on the Family has participated in drives of this nature on several occasions. In the meantime, if your child attends public school, you may want to gear up by taking steps to get involved in an active way. Find out how you can take part in school functions. If possible, become a classroom volunteer. Join the parent-teacher organization (PTO), introduce yourself to the teachers and administrators, pray for them, and let them know how much you appreciate what they’re doing. Assume that you and the school’s faculty are on the same team unless problems arise that convince you otherwise. A great way to support your child is through a mother’s prayer group such as Moms in Touch International (800-949-MOMS or http://www.momsintouch.org). The whole idea is to show your kids, not only by your words but through your actions, that you care enough to walk beside them as they step back into the classroom this fall. When they see how much their education means to you, I predict they’ll be more enthusiastic and begin to value it more, too.
