COUNTRY PROGRAMME SUMMARIES

This report contains a review of the Agency"s technicalco-operation activities in Mexico carried out during 1986 -1996. In terms of coverage and analytical depth, countryprogramme summaries stand somewhere midway between in-depth country programme evaluations and individual projectevaluations. They attempt to provide a comprehensive, descriptive picture of the Agency's co-operation with aMember State in a manner that will be particularly useful forprogramming decisions. The attempt is very much todescribe ~ largely through statistical data -- not to provideindependent analysis and evaluation.

INTRODUCTION

The country programme summary reported on here is one in the seriesof such studies being undertaken of the Agency's TC programme withMember States. With over $11.7 million of Agency support received, Mexicoranks 16 * among all recipients of technical assistance during the period1958 through 1995.

More than one half of the assistance received by Nigeria during thepast ten years has been provided in the form of equipment (53%),complemented by expert services (28%) and training (19%). Over two-thirdsof the resources were provided by the Technical Co-operation Fund (68%),the rest was made available through extrabudgetary contributions (26%)and through assistance in kind (6%).

With regard to total disbursements under those projects that werecompleted between 1986 and July 1996, or are still operational, the twomajor sectors were nuclear engineering and technology (27%) and nuclearsafety (24%). Smaller shares went to agriculture (15%), nuclear physics andchemistry (12%), industry and hydrology (10%) and general atomic energydevelopment (7%).

Since 1986, scientists from Mexico have completed 251 assignmentsas Agency experts and training course lecturers or as participants inresearch co-ordination meetings. During the same period, Mexico hashosted 190 fellowships and scientific visits, as well as 38 national, regionaland interregional training courses, workshops, seminars and meetings for atotal of 466 participants from outside the country.
