INTRODUCTION Ufone GSM is a Pakistani GSM cellular service

provider. It is one of the six GSM mobile companiesin Pakistan and it is a subsidiary of PakistanTelecommunication Company Limited. It has asubscriber base of 20 millions of June 2009.

The company commenced its operation under thebrand name of Ufone from Islamabad in January 292001.

During the years, Ufone continued on thepath to success; the company has network coveragein more than 5885 locations and across all majorhighways of the country.

Ufone has some exciting and energetic SMS packagesthat made SMS almost free.

They are offering Rs. 25, Rs.50, Rs.100, Rs. 150 SMSpackages which its subscribers are really loving it.

Ufone increased its focus on the youth segment (whichcomprises 50% of the population), with the Prepaybrand.

It has the post paid service that is normally to attractthe Business class people.

Most of the business and elite class people use postpaid and other services offered by the Ufone.

many people towards Ufone.

Ufone post paid is also offering black berry set that isuseful and tempting for the Business class.

This is Ufone’s biggest weakness; company is unable tomeet the demands.

market Mobilink was already prevailing in the marketand it was all Mobilink monopoly that time.

Though with the passage of time Ufone took manycustomers of Mobilink but still Mobilink has largenumber of users because it was first to Pakistan’scellular market and this is the competitive disadvantageto Ufone.

• INTERNAL PROBLEMS Ufone is plagued with some internal problems

like when it is privatized to ETISALAT being thepart of the PTCL many employees were nothappy with the pay scale that they were offering.

Being the part of PTCL it has to face manyproblems like strike by employees etc.

Its customers service staff need trainingbecause at many franchises their employeesare have been complained about behavingrudely.

Contd… Ufone does not have the proper lists of its customers. It

has the list but this list is not authentic which isincreasing the unauthorized use of its SIM specially prepay.

Ufone have to take serious steps to properly list itscustomers to ensure that there is no misuse.

DEVELOP FRANCHISE IN REMOTEAREAS

Ufone should develop some new franchises inremote areas so that people will get more and morebenefit from it and it will help to increase theircustomers.

Ufone should extend its network coverage area toNorthern part of the country as well because in thatpart not too many companies are giving services andif Ufone give its service there then it will definitelyattract people and its number of customers will shootlike a rocket.

Some others are… In “ Ufone ghanta” package time of the package should

be extend two more hours so that more & more peoplewill use this service and causing Ufone to generatemore revenues.

It should also introduce some packages for internetusers on mobile if it do so then many people will switchfrom other networks towards it.

It should introduced International SMS packages likelocal SMS.

Already Ufone is offering lowest International SMSrates but if they introduce some package like this it willget lots and lots of success.

Threats are……

• GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCEGovernment interference in terms of taxes will alwaysbe treated as a threat.

• PTCL CELLULAR LICENSEUfone is nothing just a cellular license to PTCL, PTCLshould provide more financial support to enhanceprofitability of its subsidiary company.

• PENSION PAYOUTS

Part of this threat is their own doing and other issimply unavoidable.

Fine is responsible for providing generous pensionbenefits to its employees, which at time seems like agreat idea, however they are now experiencingproblems as more and more people begin to collect.

• INCREASED HEALTH CARE COSTSUfone, like many large companies with qualityemployees’ health care benefits, is experiencing a largefinancial hit that only get worse as time continues ascompare to other cellular firms.

• TOUGH COMPETETIONAs Ufone is cellular company and there is cut throatcompetition among cellular companies in Pakistan.There are six other companies also working in Pakistanso Ufone would have to face some growing competitivepressures.

• PRESSURE GROUPSome pressure groups are protesting on the towersthat are installed in residential areas. Their opinion isthat it is not good for health of people to have suchtowers near their homes that cause radiations.

• ECONOMIC PROBLEMSPakistan is facing some serious economic problemsnow days so that would also affect Ufone. Thecurrent recession in market is not good for any kindof business including telecommunication.

Some others are… In Baluchistan and FATA where Ufone already has

network coverage is in danger because of criticalsituation and operation being held there. Investmentof Ufone is in danger.

Ufone penetrated in the market from 2005 to 2006quite rapidly but since then it is experiencing a bitslower growth.

There are some rumors about the shares of PTCL inthe market. Being the Subsidiary company of PTCL,Ufone will also be affected by that.

legal and authorized. Because now the Governmenthas warn to take strict action if any company would notkeep such record.

Comparison with others…

By the arrival of China Mobile Company (Zong) in cellularindustry of Pakistan, the Ufone and other companiesnow have to face the severe competition.

As Zong is introducing some various attractive packagesof both SMS and calls to attract customers.

Ufone have to develop strategies to counter theirstrategy and to survive in the market.
