Excellent Healthcare. Impeccable Standards.

ForewordWelcome to our Autumn-Winter 2021/2022 Consultant & Service Directory. As we reflect on another challenging year, I would like to personally thank each and every member of staff, clinician and referring partner for helping us to continue providing excellent healthcare. For the past two years, we have consistently achieved 100% patient satisfaction with the quality of care that we provide.

Every referral we receive from our community of GPs and Allied Health Professionals allows us to continue supporting our on-site Hospice, St John’s.

St John’s Hospice provides free, palliative care to over 4,500 terminally ill patients and their families each year, who are referred to us via the NHS across seven local boroughs.

We have recently unveiled the first phase of our £35m new wing, which boasts four state-of-the-art theatres and a cutting-edge ‘O-Arm’, which will enable us to treat the most complex of spinal cases. We are in the process of upgrading our entire Imaging Suite, designed to be as comfortable as possible, especially for bariatric and claustrophobic patients.

We are also expanding our Urgent Care Clinic to double its capacity, introducing a further two theatres, refurbished waiting areas and new amenities for patients.

Upon the conclusion of our project, we will be one of the most advanced hospitals in the country. Coupling the latest in medical technology with our already best-in-class Consultant specialists, we look forward to continue bringing medical and surgical excellence into the heart of St John’s Wood.

Thank you all again for supporting our charitable Hospital. I sincerely hope you find this Consultant & Service Directory both informative and helpful.

With my best wishes,

Caroline Fox, CEO

A brief history

About us

Founded in 1856 under the care of the Sisters of Mercy, an order of nuns who worked with Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War, our Hospital pioneered the use of advanced nursing techniques to help the sick, the dying and the needy in the local community.

Now, over 165 years later, the Hospital is no longer run by nuns, but their ethos remains at the heart of what is regarded as a unique London hospital. Although we are an innovative private hospital, we are also a registered charity. Nowhere else does the work of a private hospital invest in supporting charitable services in the way that St John & St Elizabeth Hospital does.

The UK’s leading independent hospitalBoth the Hospital and the Hospice take great pride in their heritage, and especially in the Catholic ethos upon which they were founded, which assures patients of a commitment to care and compassion in the delivery of their healthcare.

St John’s Hospice is the main beneficiary of St John & St Elizabeth Hospital. In addition to providing financial support, our relationship with the Hospice is crucial to the unique model of care the Hospice is able to provide to patients. All X-rays, Pathology, and Pharmacy are delivered on-site, enabling us to offer a less stressful experience for our patients and an immediacy of care that could not happen in most other hospices. The aim of both is the same now as it was over 165 years ago – to provide the highest quality care for those who need it most.

St John’s Hospice is part of the charitable St John & St Elizabeth Hospital. For the last 35 years we have been providing quality palliative care, free of charge, to over 4,500 terminally ill patients and their families, living in and around Central and North London every year.

We believe in a holistic approach to care, ensuring that not only the patient, but their carers and families are looked after throughout their illness. Each patient is given help and support to ensure they live their life to the fullest for as long as possible.

Inpatient Unit Our 17 bed ward provides 24-hour care from an experienced team of specialist palliative care consultants, nurses, occupational therapists, dietitians, volunteers, physiotherapists, complementary therapists and social workers. In 2020, we completed renovations on our unit to provide the very best environment for our patients, by including an additional communal space for socialising and better access to our Hospice garden.

Hospice@Home Hospice@Home empowers people to take ownership of their health and care planning. We are one of only two hospices in the country that provide one-to-one 24-hour care delivered in the home by trained and dedicated professionals.

Day Care CentreThe Day Care Centre provides specialist palliative care, a complementary therapy programme, a range of health related outlets and resources, as well as creative activities and the chance to spend time and have a meal with friends. Transport via our unique Palliative Care Ambulance Service is provided for people who would otherwise be unable to leave their homes. We do not limit patients to a 12 week support programme; we are here for as long as we are needed.

Community SupportThe community team is made up not only of nurse specialists, but also therapists, consultants, and social workers, all of which visit and see people at home to ensure that everyone has access to our holistic care. Our patients have access to services from the moment they are diagnosed to the end of their lives.

All donations received help us to reach as many people in need as possible, ensuring they can receive the highest quality of care for as long as they need it.

Our executive Chef, Lee Szukalski has fostered a unique atmosphere amongst his team. Not only is the kitchen immaculate and the food of high quality, Lee and his team always go above and beyond to inject vibrancy into their food and provide delightful cuisine for our patients. From morale-boosting themed lunches, high-end daily meals, to special requirement meals lovingly created for Hospice patients, our Catering Team encapsulates the spirit of our Hospital and our mantra – putting people first.

All our chefs attend a four-week masterclass on creating excellent pureed food for the needs of dysphagia patients. It also looks just like the real thing! Extra touches like these have an immeasurable impact on those patients for whom eating solids can be a challenge.

Our team has also been featured in publications as examples of excellence in hospital catering and are constantly raising the bar.

An exciting new chapter St John & St Elizabeth Hospital has ushered in the future with the launch of our new £35m wing, featuring cutting-edge technology, and designed with the patient at heart. The new wing is the jewel in our crown and will ensure we can keep delivering the highest quality care and impeccable standards to the community of St John’s Wood.

About usAbout us

The launch of the new wing means that not only will people have access to the finest Consultants, at the forefront of their field; they will also have the benefit of the latest surgical equipment, a seamless patient journey; and calm, comfortable surroundings. People can rest easy knowing they are in the safest of hands in our community-centred hospital with a real family feel.

Our hospital, affectionately known to locals as St John and Lizzies, is London’s leading charitable hospital, with a long history of providing excellent care. The launch of the new wing has been the perfect way to celebrate the hospital’s rich heritage and connection to the St John’s Wood community, as well as look to the future and usher in an exciting new chapter.

We are opening the new wing in three phases, with the opening of the first floor having taken place this October 2021, and the remaining two floors planned to open by early 2022.

The first floor boasts: four large integrated operating theatres; a six-bay recovery area; new orthopaedic facilities; and wide pathways with natural light designed specifically to create a calm, stress-free environment.

Our new wing is the embodiment of staff efforts, our surgeons and our design team to create an environment that will provide the highest standards of care for our patients.

They have worked against all odds, particularly having to navigate COVID-19 restrictions, to produce a beautiful addition to this historic hospital, and one which will go on to serve the community of St John’s Wood for many years to come.

The new wing will provide state-of-the-art facilities, enabling us to expand our capacity to treat patients in superb surroundings as well as help our Hospice to continue providing free specialist palliative care to more than 4,500 patients and their families each year.

Over our 165 years of operation, excellence of care has been at the core of the hospital’s ethos since it opened in 1856 under the care of the Sisters of Mercy, an order of nuns who worked with Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War. In 1899, the hospital was moved, brick by brick, to its current location in the heart of St John’s Wood, including the careful relocation of its exquisite chapel.

Work began on the new wing in 2019, and since January this year, Kerry Barham, a former chief nurse, has been leading on the design and furnishing of the interior.

We have held workshops with heads of department and involved staff and former patients in discussions. The result is a calm, bright interior which has a feeling of space, with wide corridors, neutral colours and plenty of natural light. The patient rooms are en-suite, each with a wet-room and large windows overlooking the local tree-lined roads. Our surgeons also love the floor to ceiling windows in some of the theatres.

We’ve all worked together to ensure that patients coming in for an operation can access everything easily. For example, the orthopaedic clinic is close to the reception area which is next door to X-Ray – everything in one place which has greatly improved the pathway for patients.

St John & St Elizabeth Hospital is truly unique and has stayed true to the aim it set over 165 years ago – to provide the highest quality healthcare to all those who seek it.

Our new wing is the embodiment of staff efforts, our surgeons and our design team to create an environment

that will provide the highest standards of care for our patientsCaroline Fox, CEO
