SermonOutline

Focus: In a world of conflict and divisiveness, followers of Jesus are provided a path of forgiveness which leads to the hope for restoration. The failure to embrace this path of forgiveness and restoration harms the witness of our faith and diminishes the power to connect with God.

I) Lawsuits among families of faith: An ugly witness to a sin sick world Painful reminders of our vulnerability and a need for accountability John Wesley: “Though we can’t think alike, may we not love alike? May we not be of one heart, though we are not of one opinion? Without all doubt, we may.”

II) A Congregation in Corinth ripped apart by lawsuits (1 Corinthians 6) The surrounding Greek culture invited and was entertained by judicial lawsuits Paul: understood the need for judicial system, but not for petty issues among believers

III) Hope for Restored Relationships Forgiveness functions only with frankness Tangling with the toxic Looking to the future and the past In the Day of the Lord, Jesus will stand as judge of the world At the cross and resurrection, Jesus forgave us, we should forgive others

IV) Practical ways on how followers of Jesus handle conflict (Matthew 18:15-22) Evaluate if major or minor issue Is God being dishonored or others being hurt? Start by talking to offender privately and lovingly about the situation Pray for humility and wisdom Choose the right time and place (talk in person whenever possible) Listen carefully (Proverbs 18:13) Speak only to build others up (Ephesians 4:29) Ask for feedback from the other person If private conversation does not bring resolution, seek intervention from mature believers Called to ambassadors of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:11ff)
