Speech Title: Promoting the Institutional Adoption ofLearning Analytics
Abstract:
The increasing role of technology to mediate learning experiences translates into an unprecedented
amount of data about how learners engage with content, peers and instructors. This wealth of data is
available to educational institutions and has the potential to provide valuable insights about the student
journey, and more importantly, about how to rationalize the allocation of support actions. However, the
deployment of effective structures, governance and processes is proving to be challenging. In this talk we
will present our findings about the structures that are emerging in various institutions and the elements
that would facilitate effective institutional adoption of learning analytics techniques.
Biography:
Abelardo Pardo is Professor and Dean ofPrograms (Engineering), UniSA.
STEM at the University of South Australia. His research interests include the design and deployment of
technology to increase the understanding and improve digital learning experiences. More specifically, his
work examines the areas of learning analytics, personalized active learning, and technology for student
support.
He is the author of over 150 research papers in scholarly journals and international conferences in the area
of educational technology and engineering education.

Speech Title: How AIED Digital Learning Games Have Made an Impact on Education and HowThey Could Do Much More
Abstract: An important and emergent area ofresearch within the field ofArtificial Intelligencein Education (AIED) is digital learning games. These types of games are aimed at supportinglearning through motivating and engaging students in computer-based gameplay, capitalizingon what Czikszentmihalyi has called "flow", a state of optimal sensory experience in whichstudents are so engaged they lose track of time and other activities. A variety of digital learninggames have led to educational benefits in a range of domains (e.g., math, science, reading). However, AIED work with digital learning games is still nascent because, while a substantialamount of AIED research has been conducted with digital games to support learning, forinstance, with games such as Battleship Numberline, Betty's Brain, Crystal Island, DecimalPoint, iSTART-2, MathSpring, Policy World, Prime Climb, Physics Playground, and SquaresFamily, there are still many more ways that AI could be applied to learning games. This talkwill discuss the progress thus far with AIED digital learning games, highlighting andcategorizing the most important and noteworthy games in the field, as well as suggesting newdirections, such as creating more compelling and interactive non-player characters and creatingmore equity and inclusion within learning games. With a multi-disciplinary approach, tappingthe expertise of learning scientists, educational technologists, game designers, human-computer interaction designers, and AI experts, I propose that these new directions can beachieved, leading to more engagement and learning with digital learning games
Biography: Prof. Bruce M. McLaren is an Associate Research Professor at Carnegie MellonUniversity and past President of the International Artificial Intelligence in Education Society(2017-2019)McLaren is passionate about how technology can support education and has dedicated his workand research to projects that explore how students can learn with digital learning games (alsocalled educational games), intelligent tutoring systems, e-learning principles, and collaborativelearning. McLaren's research with digital learning games, for instance, has shown that studentscan learn about decimals and decimal operations better by playing a game than by using moreconventional technology. McLaren's research with digital learning games has also uncovereda gender effect, in which females are more engaged and learn more from his Decimal Pointlearning game. Prof. McLaren holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Intelligent Systems from theUniversity ofPittsburgh, an M.S. in Computer Science from the University ofPittsburgh, anda B.S. in Computer Science (cum laude) from Millersville University. During his career, hehas over 175 publications (35 journal articles) spanning peer-reviewed journals, conferences, workshops, symposiums, and book chapters. In addition to his research background, Prof.McLaren has over 20 years experience in the commercial sector, applying research ideas topractical problems using Artificial Intelligence techniques.

Speech Title: Academic Dishonesty Then and Now – and Reducingit in the Future
Abstract:
I'll review the literature on academic dishonesty up to the beginning ofthe age of online education. Then
I'll discuss our studies of copying of online homework in for-credit on-campus courses, as well as its
surprising prevalence in not-for-credit online MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses). After presenting
data that academic dishonesty has increased since COVID, I'll suggest some ways to reduce it in the
future.
Biography:
Professor Pritchard received his B.S. from California Institute ofTechnology and his Ph.D. from Harvard,
working with Professor Daniel Kleppner, who soon there after came to MIT, bringing Pritchard with him
as a postdoctoral fellow. Pritchard joined the faculty ofthe Department ofPhysics in 1970. He has many
honors, including the Broida Prize of the American Physical Society. He is a member of the National
Academy ofSciences and is a Fellow of the American Academy ofArts and Sciences. Professor Pritchard
is also a dedicated teacher. During the past few years he has developed a computer-based tutorial for
elementary mechanics called Cybertutor, which has been used successfully in versions of 8.01: Physics I.

Speech Title: Building a Collaborative Education Ecosystem -
Innovation and Practices
Abstract:
The rapid development of digital economy in China raises a huge demand for digital talents (digitalent).
Huike, a more than ten year's start-up company with mission to tackle the digitalent challenge, is building
a deep industry-univeristy collaboration ecosystem for bridging the gap between talent supply and
demand. The talk presents the innovative four-tier HOPE (Huike Open Platform for Education) model
integrating Huike's education philosophy, methodology, best practices and resources. A case study is
introduced to demonstrate how it establishes an novel education paradigm for university to both improve
the outcome-based education and capture the digital opportunities. Besides empowering university, the
model is now being extended to HOPE+ to support the nation's lifelong learning transformation. Kaikeba,
a pure online learning platform for kinds of professional technologies and skills, was incubated from
Huike years ago to support the strategical initiative. Current Kaikeba is a pioneer platform in China with
more than five million learners and together with Huike, building an effective and efficient learning
ecosystem for every learners.
Biography:
Ying Chen is Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) of Huike Group and president of Huike Research, China,
where he is in charge ofgroup R&D innovation developmen.
He is an expert and pioneer practitioner in industry-university collaboration. He has been guest professor
