President’s Corner

Dear King’s Daughters,

I hope all of you that attended the Annual Recognition dinner had a wonderful time!

We had a wonderful and entertaining presentation from Michael Strunc, MD on the

CHKD Sleep Medicine Program and how dysfunctional sleep affects a child and its

entire family. Who knew that sleep could be so interesting! We also presented the

KD Award of Excellence to Fink’s Jewelers who have been such a good and sup-

portive friend to The King’s Daughters!

In the next month we will have two of our major projects: Breakfast with Santa and Moonlight &

Mistletoe. Breakfast with Santa is a wonderful morning where you can bring your children and

grandchildren to meet Santa and start enjoying the holiday season! Moonlight & Mistletoe is our

holiday gala, but this year it is going to be a cocktail party at The Cavalier Hotel, with silent and live

auctions! I hope you can enjoy one or both of these events that our fellow King’s Daughters and

staff have worked so hard on.

We are now accepting nominations for the KD Board of Directors. Please look over the criteria in this

Circular and see if you or someone you know would be a good candidate for our board. You can

nominate yourself or someone else.

We have included the Volunteer Hours report in this Circular instead of the Annual Report that was

distributed at the Annual Recognition Dinner so everyone will receive a copy. This is an impressive

testament to all of our hard work as King’s Daughters! You should be very proud of yourselves!

I want to ask you to look at other Circle’s events listed in this Circular and try to support other King’s

Daughters! We all have the same goal, Raising Funds, Friends, & Awareness for CHKD! As always,

thank you so much for all that you do as King’s Daughters!

Raising funds, friends & awareness for CHKD

Mental Health Initiative CHKD to Launch Construction of $224 Million Mental Health Hospital Governor Ralph Northam joined state and local legislators, community leaders, and CHKD officials at the groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday, September 17, to launch a $224 million mental health hospital expected to transform mental health care for children across the state. The 14-story building on Gresham Drive will be the centerpiece of a bold new initiative that will provide a full spectrum of mental health care for children, filling a critical gap in a statewide shortage of pediatric mental health services. The 60-bed facility will offer a new level of care, standing out among the nation’s top pediatric mental health hospitals, with innovative patient- and family-centered design, research-based treatments, academic training programs for the next generation of child psychiatrists, and unparalleled support and community involvement. All inpatient rooms will be private, with sleeping accommodations for a parent. Other facility highlights include an outdoor recreation area, an indoor gym, a music room and recording studio, a rooftop garden, a soothing multi-sensory room and family lounge areas. The facility, scheduled to open in 2022, will also provide outpatient therapy and a “partial hospitalization” program that provides intensive care to children who will spend most of the day at the hospital, but still reside at home. Nationally, 20 percent of children have a diagnosable mental health condition. At CHKD, the number of outpatient therapy visits and mental health consultations increased by 300 percent over a recent three-year period. Virginia's only state mental health hospital for children, Commonwealth Center for Children & Adolescents in Staunton, has seen an alarming increase in demand. An increasing number of children who turned to CHKD for care waited days for a bed or even left the state to find care. CHKD will focus programming on children who have the hardest time finding treatment, including children with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders as well as children with eating disorders, chronic medical and co-occurring mental illness, and children ages 2 to 5.

CHKD has a long history of stepping in to close gaps in the care of children in this community. The mental health crisis facing our community is no different. As daunting as it is to create a new system of care for these children in need, CHKD is committed to lighting the way toward healing, not just in our community, but for children everywhere. Norfolk City Union of The King’s Daughters: The First Few Years Miss Margaret Roper called a meeting on April 17, 1896, and those present formally organized as The Norfolk City Union of The King’s Daughters, with 13 Circles in the first year. The first annual report stated, “The Object of the Union is to give the poor and those of moderate means the best home nursing possible under existing circumstances.” As Chairman, Miss Roper wrote “Our work is among the sick, poor, and our list of patients are many chronic invalids, some entirely alone in the world, for whom the visit of The King’s Daughters nurse is the brightest part of the day. Our reports are full, but he reads best who can read between the lines and can picture what it must be to these neglected ones to learn that someone really cares for them”. In January 1897, the Union hired Edith Nason, graduate of St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago and district nurse of Church of Ascension, Chicago. During her first 9 ½ months, she visited 127 persons 1,771 times. The patients were American, English, Irish and Syrian. 5 were sent to the hospital, 19 improved, 62 recovered and 12 died. Records note those who passed had been extremely ill prior to Miss Nason’s care. Only 1 of the 127 patients could afford to pay the suggested 10 cent fee for her services. The Union’s first year donations totaled $826.95, with expens-es of $602.06. Miss Nason was paid $237.60 and $75 for her board at the YWCA. The report concluded with a “wish list”:

That all King’s Daughters should unite for the Union More subscribers A milk fund – so much is needed for the sick A bicycle for the Nurse A diet kitchen Supplies such as gowns for women and children, sheets, pillowcases, clothing for infants and children, old linens and soap.

During the 1897-1898 year, the Union purchased the bicycle for Miss Nason, helping her visits reach 2,015 to 150 patients! The Union formed the diet kitchen to prepare broths and custards for the sick. They rented a small house at 452 Bute Street for headquarters and Miss Nason’s housing. The first fundraiser, a Musical Tea, raised $61.03 (today, $1,856.09). Donors included 30 men and 7 companies, and 235 members made up 15 Circles. During 1898-1899, the Union moved to 251 Fenchurch Street for more space, and a Persian Garden fundraiser netted $186.90 ($5,781.72 today). Small pox, a dislocated elbow, and strep throat kept Miss Nason from work for over 3 months, so the Union hired a second nurse and a substitute nurse. Though the second nurse resigned in 1900, she and Miss Nason managed an impressive 1,849 visits during her tenure. “Some publically spirited men” led the Free Ice Program and 1,400 pounds were distributed. The Union entered the 20th century with a robust 13 Circles and 217 members.

Signature Project Kickoff

The KD Signature Project Committee kicked off a brand new year in September with a dinner catered by Hangry’s at Kristi Jones’ home. 15 KD members, who represent 74 of the 120 canisters in businesses, gathered to celebrate their partnership, share anecdotes, and chat with President, Julie Beck, who participates in her own Circle’s canister management. This year the Signature Project Committee and Circle members who service canisters aim to place more canisters in local businesses. To exceed last year’s 22 new canisters, they need your help. If you see an establishment along your daily drive that might look promising for canister placement, give Hallie Edwards a call in the KD office. Someone from the Committee will stop by there and try to place one for you. If you’d rather do it yourself, Hallie can provide you with a canister and our brand new flyer. It makes the introduction easy. Thank you! We need everyone’s ideas to grow KD’s oldest community project. Small change makes a BIG difference.
