processes

Thank you for the lesson on process building 101 . Why should I care ?

• All companies have and run business process.

• To have a leading edge and be competitive in todays market, a company

needs to continuously improve its processes.

• As processes are intangible, we need some way to work with it.

• It will serve as a communication medium across different stakeholders.

• As such it will need to be in a standard format that promotes

interoperability and collaboration.

Introduction to Processes and BPMN

BPMN 2.0

What is BPMN ?

• It is an acronym for Business Process Modelling Notation.

• Business Process is a collection of related activities or tasks that

creates something of specific value to a customer or provides a

specific service.

• Modeling defines the visual representation

• Notation is the language (set of elements ,rules and execution

semantics) to represent the process in the model.

• It was created by BPMI(Business Process Management Institute) and

is maintained by the OMG Consortium.

• Graphical notation for drawing business process.

• Current version is 2.0.2 released in Jan 2014.

Why BPMN ?

• It’s the de-facto standard in process modeling.

• Easily understandable by different stakeholders.

• Mitigates the communication gap between process design and process

implementation.

• Executable.

• Interoperable.

• Vendor neutral.

Types of modelling supported

Orchestration diagrams

• Describes a sequence of activities that produce a specific outcome or service.

Collaboration diagrams

• Describes the interactions between two or participants (pools)

• The focus is how on message flow.

Choreography diagrams

• Describes the interactions between two or participants (pools).

• The focus is on the exchange format

Conversation diagrams

• Describes the interaction between participants (pool)

• Birds eye view of the different exchange of information between the participants

Basic BPMN elements

Introduction to Processes and BPMN

Events

• Events are notification that occur during the process modeling

• They are represented by circles

• There are 3 types of events

• Start Event

• End Event

• Boundary Event

Introduction to Processes and BPMN

Activity

• Generic term to describe the steps the company performs within a process

• There are 2 types

• Tasks

• Sub Tasks

• Reusable components

• Can be collapsed to hide details

Message flows are used to exchange data and coordinate work between

participants

Introduction to Processes and BPMN

Swim lanes

• There are 3 kinds of Pools

• It may be empty

• It could be a black box

• It represents a process

• Lanes are elements composed within pools

• they organize the flow of activities within a pool

• they don’t have any bearing on the process

Introduction to Processes and BPMN

Gateways

Gateways are used in diagrams both to separate flows and to recombine them.
