Of those who will take part in Vet-eran’s Day observances this year, stu-dents and youth of our communityshould not be overlooked. The les-sons they have to learn from the sac-rifices of men and women who camebefore them are tooimportant to skip.Every year, the

spirit of service andsacrifice that hasdriven so manyyoung men andwomen into the mili-tary are gettingmore clouded. The mistakes of therecent past have colored the percep-tion of military service for some, overshadowing the great legacy leftbehind by prior generations’ sacri-fices.The greatest way to involve the

young is to teach them. And it goesfurther than the historical facts oftwo intense World Wars, action inKorea, the quagmire of Vietnam orthe conflicts more likely to be partsof their lives — Iraq andAfghanistan. The students in our local school

systems now represent the next andbest hope for the strength of theAmerican military system. Obvi-ously, the ultimate goal for any civi-lization should be to no longer needdefenders, but that goal is arguablyunattainable. We must continue togird our military forces with fresh, new and ready soldiers who are ableto put the good of others above theirown personal wants and desires. Wemust do this to form a guarantee ofsacrifice and service that will protectour nation in the years to come. And youth who chose not to be a

part of the military must still appre-ciate the role soldiers have playedand continue to play in our Americanfreedoms. With that in mind, making sure

our children know, for example, theimportance of Veteran’s Day, how it’sdifferent than Memorial Day, andmost importantly why we take thetime to honor our military men andwomen, is very important.Honoring veterans throughout the

day and the month of Novemberhelps us to all touch on the deep grat-itude we feel for the sacrifices madeby military men and women.Find a veteran this weekend and

thank them, and find a student todayand teach them.

The nation this month is preoc-cupied with memory: The shots inDallas. The frantic drive to Park-land Hospital. The agonizing mo-ments of uncertainty, followed bythe lingering feelingofincredulity. The sceneon Air Force One. Thearrest and then theslaying of the accusedkiller.Thecoffin in theCapitol. But it isn’t only

memory that hauntsus in the run-up to the50th anniversary ofthe assassination ofJohn F. Kennedy. Weare haunted almost asmuch by what mighthave been as by what happened. What would have occurred in theremainderof thepresident’s term?In the 1964 election? In a secondterm, presuming Kennedy was re-elected?This ismore thanaparlorgame,

thoughithasdominatedmorethanone dinner from Georgetown toMoscow. It prompts us to examinehowourhistoryunfolded, whetherthere was an alternative course, whether the upheaval of the 1960s,the eventual election of RichardNixon, evenWatergate, might havebeenavoidedhadthebulletsmissedtheir mark, had the president sur-vived,hadthedayinDallasdawnedrainy and not brilliantly bright, prompting the president to ride inacovered1961PresidentialLincolnrather than theopenvehicle that isseared into our historicalmemory.By definition there is no such

thingasalternativehistory.WecannomoreturnaroundthecaratDal-las in 1963 as we could at Sarajevo, whereamerediversionintherouteof the Austrian archduke in 1914might have prevented the waste of9 million lives and, it is possible, avoidedtheRussianRevolution, theHolocaustandtheColdWar.Butanexaminationof thisquestionhelpsus understand history, and under-lines how helpless we sometimesare in itsmarch. There are myriad elements to

the intersectionof historical forcesthat collided as PresidentKennedy’s motorcade approachedthe intersection of Houston andElm Streets a half-century ago. These are three of the most in-triguing, troubling — and illumi-nating:

The Vietnam WarFew subjects have transfixed

scholars, commentators and diplo-mats as deeply and as persistentlyas the question of whether theUnited States would have commit-ted a half million troops (and sent58,000Americansto theirdeaths) in

Vietnam had Kennedy won a sec-ond term. There is conflicting evidence,

supporting both the notion thatKennedy would have plunged

deeper into SoutheastAsia and the idea thathe would have with-drawn shortly afterbeing re-elected. Botharguments point to anelemental cynicism:that the president‘sfear of being blamedfor losing Vietnamwould have propelledhim intowidening theconflict, or that hewould risk Americanlives in a half-hearted

cause to preserve his politicalprospects and then remove troopsonce his own future had been se-cured.Overall the better claim goes to

the argument that Kennedy wouldhave limited or ended the U.S. rolein Vietnam. He and Robert F.Kennedy had visited Indochina adecade earlier and breathed theanti-colonial stench created by theFrench, who fled in defeat in 1954.Thatveryyear,KennedysaidontheSenate floor that “to pour money, material and men into the junglesof Indochina without at least a re-mote prospect of victory would bedangerously futileandself-destruc-tive.”Though a devout Cold Warrior,

Kennedywaschastenedby theBayof Pigs and less vulnerable, as heput it, “to plunge into an irrespon-sibleaction justbecausea fanaticalfringe inthiscountryputsso-callednational pride above national rea-son.”InhisJFK’sLastHundredDays,

published this autumn, ThurstonClarkerepeatedlycitesexamplesofKennedy resisting entreaties to in-crease the American commitmenttoVietnam, where, JFK told his re-porter friend Charles Bartlett, thenationdidn’t “haveaprayerof pre-vailing.”

RaceKennedy’s evolution on civil

rights outpaced the nation’s, butlaggedthatof his IvyLeaguecircle.Well into his administration, hewas logically but not emotionallycommitted toequal rightsand inte-gration. But as he employed therhetoric of “freedom”while prose-cuting aColdWar abroad, he cameto see the incongruity andhypocrisy in the nation’s domesticlife. Eventually the sight of Ameri-can authorities clashing withAmerican citizens at lunch coun-ters, schoolhouse doors, bus sta-tions and in the streets was morethanhe could bear.

Some of that transition oc-curred during his struggle withGov. George C. Wallace of Ala-bama, which prompted his racespeech in June 1963. But some of ithappened two months later, afterthe March on Washington. Theprincipal organizers visitedKennedy in the White House theevening of the march. “I have adream,” Kennedy told King in thatsetting, at that moment enlistingfully inKing’s cause. Therewas noturning back.

The youth rebellionThe Port Huron Statement, the

Students for a Democratic Societymanifesto written by Tom Haydenin 1962, sometimes is regarded asthe clarion of 1960s upheaval, butmuch of the decade’s social, politi-calandcultural tumultgrewoutofopposition to theVietnamWarandimpatience on civil rights. So it ispossible to posit that a withdrawalfromVietnamanda frontal assaulton segregation might have pre-ventedorameliorated therebellionof the 1960s.Kennedy was a hero to Ameri-

can youth — but he had more incommon with the Rat Pack thanwith the counter-culture. He was alibertine, butdidnot flaunthis sex-ual adventurism;heacknowledgedhewasacombinationof promiscu-ity andPuritanism.Even his language was anti-

quarian; he spoke of “dames,” not“chicks.”Hewasadrugabuser, buthis drugs were prescription med-icationsmeant to easehispain, notto provide a sense of ease or ele-vated consciousness.Kennedy had an inherent suspi-

cion of big business — he took onthesteelbarons inacelebrated1962confrontation — but believed incapitalism. His heroes were establishment

If John F. Kennedy had lived

When my old friend Rob callsus from New York City, he alwaysasks, “But what do you do outthere?” As if everyone who does-n’t live in Manhattan lives on afarm in the middle offlyover countrywhereyou have to pumpyour water by handand use an outhouse.Living ina small townwould be his worstnightmare, becausewhat he really meansby “What do you doout there?” is “Wheredo you shop?”“Doing some-

thing,” to me, meansmowing the lawn, rak-ing the leaves, stack-ing the wood, tending the garden, fixing the house, cleaning the gut-ters, getting the storm windowsready, jawing with the neighborsabout how strange the weatherhas been. To Rob it means buyingthings. While Rob has tens of thou-

sands more neighbors than I do,he doesn’t know any of them andyou wouldn’t need your toes tocounthis friends. He lives ina tiny, wildly expensive apartment in anelevator buildingwith adoorman. His cleaning person comes ineveryTuesday. His onlyhouseholdchore is writing a check for therent once a month. When he’s notworking, he’s shopping. His clos-ets are full of expensive suits andties from fancy haberdashers. Hewould be appalled by the 10-year-olddark suit fromJ.C.Penney thatI wear to weddings and funerals.

Everything else I own comes fromwhat Sue calls “TheGutter Clean-ing Collection.”“What is there to do?” I answer

him. “Plenty. We go into town andwatch them put themail in the boxes.‘Course we’d have toget there before 10.What time do you getup nowadays?Around noon? They’re having a saleon sumppumps downat the Feed and Seed, and we don’t want tomiss that. Doug’s hav-ing his septic systempumped on Saturday. That’ll be somethingto see. Then we all

stand around and wait for thelastest news fromNewYorkon thenoon stage.” I could almost hearhim roll his eyes.“Well, what did you do last

night?” I asked him.“StayedhomeandwatchedTV.”“And like 85 percent of Amer-

ica, so did we,” I said. “The other15 percent were on Facebook. Youwant to know the difference be-tween watching TV at our houseand watching TV in your apart-ment?”“What?”“Thirty-five hundred dollars a

month, plus utilities. If you weregoing toBroadwaymusicals everynight, and eating at the hottestrestaurants and then nightclub-bingwithB-list celebrities, I couldsee living in Manhattan. But ifyou’re staying home most nightswatching TV, you could do that

anywhere. Sure, you make Man-hattan money, but you’ll spendmore than youmake.“On my way to work in Man-

hattan,” I continued, “I wouldwalk past shops that sold $10,000watches, shops that sold $600shoes, shops that sold $20,000dresses.What dowe do out here? Idon’t know, but I sure don’t need a$600 pair of shoes to do it in.”“Don’t youmiss anythingabout

the city?” Rob asked.“Plenty. I miss the smell of

slightly rotten garbage in themorning, Imiss the soundof jack-hammers, Imiss alternate-side-of-the-street parking, I missgum-paved sidewalks, I miss pan-handlers, I miss dog walkers, Imiss spending 20 minutes tryingto get a taxi in the rain.” I thinkRob had hung up when I got to“parking.”Since we escaped from the big

city, I would love to say I’ve dis-covered that the most beautifulthings in the world are the wild-flowers in the spring, the sight oftiny, spotted fawns crossing ourlawn and the smell of new-mowngrass.But they are not. The most

beautiful thing in the world ishearing that they’re declaring to-morrow another “Gridlock AlertDay” in the city. There’s just some-thing about the mental picture ajunior exec sitting inanew$88,000Mercedes going absolutelynowhere that never fails to cheerme up.

Anderson, 61, never spoke in hisreturn to the same Williamson County courthousewhere he served as a judge for 11 years before resign-ing in September.Sitting behind Anderson in the gallery was

Michael Morton, who was released from prison in2011 after DNA evidence showed he didn't beat hiswife to death in 1986."It's a good day,"Morton said.Anderson entered a plea of no contest to contempt

of court. The charge stemmed from a 1987 exchangewhenAnderson, then theWilliamsonCountydistrictattorney, was asked by a judge whether he had any-thing to offer that was favorable to Morton's defense. He said no.

“We are so proud ofour students and the suc-cess we had in the firstyearof competition,”saidJeannie Spaniel, who co-ordinates UIL Academicsfor EHS. “We’re verypleased that Chaunceywill be carrying our ban-ner at the state meet inJanuary.”

StudentCongress ises-sentially a mock legisla-tive assemblycompetition. Students de-liver formal discourse onthe merits and disadvan-tages of eachpiece of leg-islation, and vote to passor defeat the measuresthey have examined. Par-liamentary proceduresareusedaspartof thedis-course, with students ex-t e m p o r a n e o u s l yresponding to others’ ar-guments over the courseof a session.

Judges evaluate con-testants for theirresearchandanalysisof issues, ar-gumentation, skill in ask-ing and answeringquestions, use of parlia-mentary procedures andclarity of speaking.

“It’s a way for our stu-dents to gain insight intothe issues and problemsthatactually confrontourlawmakers,” Spanieladded.

Local veterans vis-ited Ennis schools lastweek to help studentslearn more about Veter-ans Day and its signifi-cance.

As local veterans’supporter Alex Wen-sowitch put it, the stepis vital for helpingyounger people whomay not have any directties to military servicein their families to un-derstand what the na-tion owes to itsveterans.

“Our veterans bringthe unique perspectiveof a person who knowswhat it takes to be animportant part of anoble effort greaterthan themselves andtranslate that experi-ence into becoming amore complete personthan they otherwisewould have been,” Wen-sowitch said. “That iswhat our veterans offerour community.”

Recognizing Veter-ans Day on Monday iskey in students’ devel-opment.

“Veterans are alwaysdeserving of our re-spect and sincerethanks, but especially atthis time of year, whenVeterans Day is recog-nized nationwide, it al-lows those who did notserve in the military anopportunity to focustheir efforts in recog-nizing the extraordi-nary efforts of therelatively small percent-age of the U.S. popula-tion who made thedecision to put countryabove self.”
