The Star-Spangled BannerAmerican National Anthem by Francis Scott Key, 1814

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,

O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Aly RichardsDoctor of Public Service, Honoris Causa

Aly Richards is the CEO of Let’s Grow Kids, a statewide organization leading the campaign to solve Vermont’s childcare crisis by 2025.

Let’s Grow Kids has created a movement, mobilizing support from more than 35,000 Vermonters as well as businesses, early childhood educators, community-based organizations, and the state’s Governor and tri-partisan legislature, which passed landmark legislation in 2021 that put Vermont on a path to transform its childcare system.

Prior to her current role, Richards served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin, where she led the effort to pass Vermont’s universal Pre-Kindergarten legislation, which established Vermont as a leader in early childhood education policy and significantly increased access to early childhood education opportunities for Vermont’s youngest learners.

Her commitment to education dates back to 2001, when Governor Howard Dean appointed her as the youngest person to serve as a student member on the Vermont State Board of Education. Richards also served on the 2008 Obama Campaign after graduating with honors in International Relations from Brown University.

For her leadership, Richards was honored in 2013 as a Toll Fellow by the Council of State Governments; in 2014 as the Vermont Champion for Education by the New England Secondary School Consortium; and in 2019 as a Changemaker for Children by Save the Children.

Richards is also actively engaged in her community, serving as a Trustee of the University of Vermont Medical Center and Vice-Chair of the Board of the Vermont Council on Rural Development, and she is a former Trustee of the Vermont State Colleges.

Richards, her husband James Pepper, their identical twin toddlers, Beau and Wesley, and two dogs, Bella and Ellie, live in Montpelier, Vermont, and can often be found at a local creek searching for the perfect skipping rock, sampling apple cider donuts and maple creemees across the state, and partaking in the many adventures of the Green Mountains, from VINS to the Burlington Bike Path.

SpyglassIn 2009, a statue of Samuel de Champlain, the founder of New France and Champlain College’s namesake, was placed between the IDX Student Life Center and Alumni Auditorium. For the past ten years, students and families have passed the statue of de Champlain looking through a spyglass toward the lake.

After each student receives their diploma from the President, the graduate will be handed a replica of a spyglass. Inscribed on the spyglass is Champlain’s Latin motto, “Audeamus,” or “Let Us Dare.” We hope that the spyglass will be a token of each student’s college achievements that they can display in their workplace. The spyglass will also serve as a way for others to recognize a Champlain alumnus or alumna in the community outside the College.

ClearLake Furniture in Ludlow, Vermont, designed the cherry spyglass, which the Student Government Association funded for the Class of 2022.

Garrett M. GraffDoctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa

Garrett M. Graff is recognized as one of the nation’s most prolific and wide-ranging journalists and historians. He has spent nearly two decades covering politics, technology, and national security, and his award-winning work—including a half-dozen books on topics ranging from presidential history and the Cold War to 9/11 and cybersecurity, as well as dozens of magazine articles, essays, podcasts, and documentaries—uses history to explain the story of today, illuminating where we’ve been as a country and where we’re headed as a world.

A current contributor to WIRED and CNN and director of the cyber initiatives at The Aspen Institute, he has written for publications from Esquire to Rolling Stone to the New York Times, and served as the editor of two of Washington’s most prestigious magazines, Washingtonian (2009-2014) and POLITICO Magazine (2014-2015), which he helped lead to its first National Magazine Award, the industry’s highest honor.

Graff’s books include The Threat Matrix: Inside Robert Mueller’s FBI and Raven Rock, about the government’s Cold War Doomsday plans, and he co-authored Dawn of the Code War, tracing the global cybersecurity threat. Douglas Brinkley called his most recent book, Watergate: A New History, “dazzling” in the New York Times Book Review. Graff’s previous book, The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11, compiling the voices of 500 Americans as they experienced that tragic day, was a #1 national bestseller and was named the 2020 Audiobook of the Year.

A regular voice and analyst on NPR, PBS NewsHour, the History Channel, and elsewhere, he hosted “Long Shadow,” a podcast series about the lingering questions of 9/11—a #1 Apple History podcast—and served as executive producer of While the Rest of Us Die, a VICE TV series based on his book Raven Rock, among other multimedia, TV, and film projects.

Graff is the founding director of the Aspen Institute’s cybersecurity and technology program, where he helped start the prestigious Aspen Cybersecurity Group, and has a long history as a new media pioneer. As the founding editor of Mediabistro’s FishbowlDC, he was the first blogger admitted to cover a White House press briefing in 2005. A Vermont native and graduate of Harvard, he served as deputy press secretary on Howard Dean’s presidential campaign and, beginning in 1997, was then Governor Dean’s first webmaster.

He taught at Georgetown University for seven years, including courses on journalism and technology, and has served on the boards of the Burlington Housing Authority, Vermont Public Radio, and the National Conference on Citizenship, a congressionally chartered civic engagement group founded by Dwight Eisenhower and Harry Truman.

Graff lives in Vermont with his wife, Katherine, and their two children.

Champlain College Then & NowChamplain College began in downtown Burlington in 1878 as the Burlington Collegiate Institute, a for-profit commercial college founded by educator George W. Thompson. During the next eighty years, the school changed ownership and names several times, becoming Champlain College in 1958.

In the late 1950s and 1960s, Champlain transitioned to a nonprofit junior college offering associate degrees in Business, Accounting, and Secretarial Science, as well as adult continuing education programs. The College moved to the Hill Section in 1958, purchasing the Victorian-era Freeman Hall to serve as its new academic and administrative headquarters.

Champlain College broadened and diversified its academic programs in the 1970s and 1980s, rolling out career-oriented associate degrees and certificate programs in Business, Education, Human Services, Hospitality and more for traditional undergraduates and adult learners. As its enrollment increased, the College acquired additional Victorian homes in the Hill Section and constructed two new academic buildings: Joyce Learning Center (1972) and the Hauke Family Campus Center (1989).

The College transformed itself again in the 1990s and 2000s, transitioning to bachelor’s and master’s degrees and distance learning programs. Its new baccalaureate programs included Multimedia and Graphic Design, Website Development and Management, and e-Business and Commerce. Champlain’s Game Studio began in 2004 with a major in Electronic Games & Interactive Development. Its distinctive Core liberal arts curriculum and InSight personal finance and career positioning program, both established in 2008, remain key components of its multidimensional undergraduate education.

In 1993, Champlain launched one of the country’s first online academic programs, offering full distance learning as well as hybrid online and in-person programs for adult students. After years of steady growth, Champlain College Online experienced a dramatic expansion in enrollment in its associate, bachelor’s, graduate, and certificate programs following the 2013 introduction of truED, a pathbreaking education partnership with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

Champlain’s campus has also grown considerably over time. In the 1990s and 2000s, Champlain constructed the Robert E. and Holly D. Miller Information Commons (1998), the S.D. Ireland Family Center for Global Business & Technology (2004), and the IDX Student Life Center (2005). In the 2010s, the College opened The Roger H. Perry Welcome & Admissions Center (2010), Miller Center at Lakeside (2011), Center for Communication & Creative Media (2015), and five new residence halls. Champlain established its study-abroad campuses in Montreal, Canada, and Dublin, Ireland, in 2007 and 2008.

Champlain College now enrolls more than 3,100 undergraduate and 600 graduate students. In the last decade, Champlain has introduced new undergraduate programs, including Cybersecurity, Creative Media, Interaction Design, Filmmaking, and Data Science; launched its Degree Design Lab and Social Impact Scholar program; and established graduate programs in Digital Forensic Science, Healthcare Administration, and Information Technology, among others.

In 2021, Champlain College’s Board of Trustees approved R/Evolutionary Champlain 2030, a strategic plan capitalizing on the College’s strength as a supportive learning community that advances society by delivering uniquely future-focused academic programs, transformative hands-on experiences, and meaningful connections and collaborations that engage the passions of our students to create a better world. Champlain’s size and stature have grown significantly since its inception in 1878, but its central mission of providing a radically pragmatic, career-focused education has remained remarkably consistent.

Academic RegaliaMuch of the regalia in today’s ceremony originated in medieval European universities, such as Oxford. Since most of the professors in that age were church clerics, they wore heavy, rather austere, long robes with hoods. This manner of dress not only reflected their vows of poverty but also kept them warm in the drafty university halls of the period. As time passed, these hooded robes evolved into elaborate vestments that more closely resembled the colorful, symbolic fashions of the royal courts. These vestments were often made of colored silks with heavy embroidery. Different styles of hoods (which were now entirely symbolic and no longer designed to cover the head), mortars (a stylized cap popular at the time), and cassock-like gowns displayed the loyalties, disciplines, and levels of achievement of the wearer.

As early as the 1700s, academic costumes found their way to America at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University (then King’s College), and perhaps at a few other colleges founded in colonial times. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, Gardner Cotrell Leonard, of Albany, New York, undertook the stabilization of the costume’s symbolism after his family’s firm designed special regalia for Williams College in Western Massachusetts. The American Council on Education has updated the academic costume code three times since then, most recently in 1986. For all colleges and universities that adhere to the Intercollegiate Code, the general descriptions are the same, although certain institutions have made slight modifications when permissible.

The color of the gown is commonly black with no trim for the bachelor’s or the master’s degree. The doctor’s gown is faced down the front with velvet, with three bars of the same across the sleeves, and may be worn open or closed. Rarely, the trim of the doctor’s gown can conform to the color code for the edgings of hoods and the tassels of caps. Ordinarily, the velvet is either black or dark blue, since the most common degree title is doctor of philosophy. The color code is the same for all degrees, although the binding or edging of the hood varies in width: two inches, three inches, and five inches for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees, respectively. Similarly, the hoods vary in length. For example, golden-yellow velvet—five inches in width, bound to a black thirty-six inch hood with panels on each side and lined with satin colors—displays a doctorate in a field of science, with the satin lining indicating the colors of the particular college or university that awarded the degree.

The bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves and the gown hangs closed. The hood is optional, although if worn, it should conform strictly to the color and design code. The master’s degree is indicated by an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, with the base hanging and square-cut. The gown may be worn open or closed, according to the design; the hood is thirty inches, without side panels, and is bound with three-inch velvet.

39

Tassels for caps may be black or may conform to the color code, except that gold is most often worn for the doctor’s degree. Members of the governing body of a college or university—and they only, whatever degrees they hold—are entitled to wear doctor’s gowns, but their hoods may be only those of degrees actually held by the wearers or especially designed by the institution. The chief officer and the chief marshal may wear specifically designed costumes as approved by the institution.

International RecognitionChamplain College includes global awareness as one of the core competencies in each of its undergraduate academic programs. To acquaint students with other cultures, the College operates international campuses in Dublin, Ireland, and Montreal, Canada. Flags for both of these countries are represented.

Our curriculum is designed to allow on-campus undergraduate students the opportunity to experience a semester abroad. These students have each been given a small medallion with the Champlain College seal to attach to their gowns.

At Champlain, both on campus and online, we have a number of students from other countries who choose to pursue their higher education with us. The flags you see displayed today around the room represent countries, other than the United States, from which our graduates come. The eleven countries represented are:

Barbados

The Dominican Republic

Germany

India

Ireland

Lebanon

Republic of Moldova

Russia

Saudi Arabia
