HISTORY OF COMPTON COLLEGE

4

The Compton Community College District (CCCD) was

established in 1927 as a component of the Compton Union High

School District. In 1950, voters approved a bond issue separating

the college from the high school district. Construction of the new

college campus was completed on the present site. Classes began on

the new campus in fall 1956.

The Compton Community College District encompasses an area of

about 29 square miles, making educational services and job training

available to more than 300,000 residents of Compton, Lynwood,

Paramount and Willowbrook, as well as portions of Athens,

Bellflower, Carson, Downey, Dominguez, Lakewood, Long Beach

and South Gate. The college offers more than 41 degree programs

and 38 certificate programs, and employs more than 400 full and

part-time faculty and staff.

In June 2017, the Accrediting Commission for Community and

Junior Colleges (ACCJC) granted initial accreditation status to

Compton College.

In July 2017, Compton College was officially named the 114th

California Community College through unanimous vote by the

Board of Governors. In August 2018, Compton College began

operating as an independent college under the authority of the

Compton Community College District Board of Trustees as outlined

in Executive Order 2018-01 issued by California Community

Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley.

Compton College is accredited by the ACCJC of the Western

Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), an institutional

accrediting body recognized by the Commission on Recognition of

Postsecondary Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education.

Ava DuVernay

Compton College is pleased to welcome Ava DuVernay as our 2021

Commencement Ceremony speaker. Ms. DuVernay is a filmmaker

and founder of ARRAY, an independent film distribution and

resource collective comprised of arts advocacy organizations.

Academy Award nominee and Emmy, BAFTA and Peabody

Award winner DuVernay is a writer, director, producer and film

distributor. Her feature directorial work includes the Oscar-

winning civil rights drama Selma, the Oscar-nominated social

justice documentary 13th and the Disney children’s adventure A

Wrinkle in Time, which made her the highest-grossing Black woman

director in American box office history.

In 2019, DuVernay created, wrote, produced and directed the Emmy

Award-winning limited series When They See Us. She is currently

in production on Colin In Black and White for Netflix and Home

Sweet Home for NBC, and in post-production on Queen Sugar for

OWN and DC Comic event series DMZ for HBO Max.

Winner of the 2012 Sundance Best Director award for her

of Black artists, people of color and women of all kinds through

her narrative change collective ARRAY, named one of Forbes Most

Innovative Companies. She currently sits on the Board of Governors

of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Advisory

Board of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and the

Board of the American Film Institute.

STUDENT SPEAKER

7

Enid Jai Wright

Associate degree candidate Enid Jai Wright is honored to be selected as the student speaker for the 2021 Commencement Ceremony at Compton College. Wright is a mother, grandmother and non-traditional student who enrolled in Compton College to create a new career for herself and follow her lifelong dream of attending medical school.

She is a biology and physiological sciences major who plans to transfer to a four-year university to complete her bachelor’s and master’s degrees before moving on to medical school. She hopes to attend either UCLA or Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. Wright is considering a career as a surgeon or emergency room physician. She has worked as a surgical technician for nearly 25 years and is now looking to increase her earning potential while also helping others.

Wright’s message today focuses on prevailing through adversity. Like many in California, even with a job, the cost of living is so high that it is difficult to cover basic needs. Wright has faced many setbacks and barriers in her life, including homelessness, but says she is not ashamed, because it makes her story and destiny that much greater.

Compton College has provided the foundation for Wright to work toward her education and career goals. She chose Compton College for its convenience and location near her family and work. Comprehensive enrollment assistance, financial aid, use of the computer lab, her academic counselor, and regular visits to the Welcome and Transfer Centers were all instrumental in her success at Compton College.

Wright’s advice for all students in college, and in life is: “Keep on going. Use perseverance to achieve your goals despite any challenges you face. It may take longer, but keep pushing for what you want.”
