Lord, teach me to be generous;teach me to serve you as you deserve;

to give and not to count the cost;to fight and not to heed the wounds;

to toil and not to seek for rest;to labor and not to ask for reward;

save that of knowing that I am doing your will.A Prayer for Generosity St. Ignatius of Loyola

Degree Conferral Creighton University confers degrees three times per year: August, December and May. Annual University commencement ceremonies are held in May. Students who complete their degree programs in August or December may attend the May commencement ceremony following completion, or with approval of the Office of the Dean, in the preceding May. Participation in a commencement ceremony does not guarantee a degree is officially earned. A degree is conferred only after the dean verifies all academic requirements are met and the degree is posted on the student’s transcript by the Office of the Registrar.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD President, Creighton University

Dear Creighton University Graduate,

On behalf of the entire Creighton University community, my heartfelt congratulations to you on this momentous occasion.

Commencement is a joyous celebration, a culmination of an enormous amount of hard work and dedication, and a launching pad for the realization of your hopes and dreams. Today also brings happiness and pride to so many others—your parents and other family members, friends, professors, mentors, and more.

Four years ago, many of you and I began our time at Creighton together. We knew not what lay ahead, but we were ready for the challenge. I am so grateful that you brought your life experiences, your plans, your energy to Creighton University, because you have left your mark, and the University is a better place for it.

Nelson Mandela famously once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” I emphatically agree, and I urge you to take what you have learned at Creighton—through your classes, clinics, growth in faith, service to others, friendships, work, and play—and influence our world for good.

Take the best of what your Jesuit, Catholic education offers—inquiry, imagination, and inspiration—and set the world on fire.

Welcome to the family of Creighton alumni—more than 70,000 strong—and enjoy this milestone day in your life.

Sincerely,

Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD

The Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD,

was inaugurated as Creighton’s 25th

president in the fall of 2015, ushering

in a new chapter for the University—

and for the Class of 2019 starting their

own Creighton experience. His opening

words to the students, “We do not step

lightly into the future,” shine brightly

through the graduates today.

DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS, honoris causa

Kyle Korver, BA’03 Professional Basketball Player, Utah Jazz

Over 16 professional seasons, Creighton alumnus Kyle Korver, BA’03, has etched his name among the NBA’s top 3-point shooters. In 2017, Korver became only the seventh player in NBA history to make 2,000 3-point shots, and he currently ranks fourth all-time with 2,351 3-point field goals.

Korver, named an NBA All-Star in 2015, has played in two NBA Finals, both with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and returned to the playoffs again this year with the Utah Jazz.

The Pella (Iowa) High School graduate majored in journalism at Creighton and starred as a student-athlete from 1999 to 2003, leading the Bluejays to NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his four seasons. He was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) regular-season and tournament MVP and was inducted in the MVC Hall of Fame in 2010.

A consensus All-American his senior year, Korver still holds the Creighton and MVC records for career 3-pointers, with 371. He was inducted into the Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018, and his No. 25 jersey was retired.

Selected in the second round of the 2003 NBA Draft, Korver has played with five NBA teams—the Philadelphia 76ers, Utah Jazz, Chicago Bulls, Atlanta Hawks and Cleveland Cavaliers. At each stop,

he has actively supported the community through the Kyle Korver Foundation.

Among numerous charitable pursuits, he partnered with local agencies to collect winter coats for children in need in Chicago and Philadelphia and initiated an

annual sock drive in Atlanta for a homeless shelter. His foundation has built wheelchair ramps

for families, hosted a golf tournament to raise funds for the Boys & Girls Club of Omaha, and supports at-risk youth at the Helping Hands Rescue Mission in Philadelphia, where he began his NBA career.

His philanthropy extends to his alma mater, where

the Championship Center practice facility is home to the Kyle Korver Courts.

In 2014, the Atlanta Hawks presented Korver with the Jason Collier Memorial Trophy for community service, and in 2015 he received the NBA Sportsmanship Award. Korver is a four-time

participant in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders

outreach program, traveling to China, India, South Africa and Brazil.

In April, Korver addressed issues of race and white privilege in an essay in The Players’ Tribune, earning praise from many, including former teammate LeBron James and other players.

DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS, honoris causa

In 1869, when the Catholic bishop of Omaha asked the Sisters of Mercy to open a hospital for the rugged frontier town, two nuns with the religious order stepped forward—drawing up plans, estimating costs and setting about raising $12,000 to open St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital at 12th and Mason streets on Sept. 24, 1870.

As Omaha grew, so did the hospital. Even after a change in sponsorship to a group of Franciscan sisters in 1880, the beautiful new Creighton Memorial St. Joseph Hospital that opened in 1892 at the corner of 10th and Castelar streets proclaimed on its cornerstone, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall be shown mercy.” It was in that very hospital, many decades later, that Sr. Maurita Soukup, then a young Mercy nurse, would continue her order’s mission of care through her deep commitment to clinical excellence and leadership.

Today, Sr. Maurita serves as a health trustee for several Iowa hospitals and two regional health care systems in Iowa and Nebraska, including CHI Health—Creighton’s clinical partner in Nebraska and western Iowa. She brings extensive clinical experience to the CHI Health board, along with working knowledge of the best practices of health care systems across the region. Through her deep understanding of what it means to be a faith-based academic health system, Sr. Maurita

Sr. Maurita Soukup, RSM, RN, PhD Health Trustee and Nurse Consultant/Researcher

blesses Creighton University and its health sciences students by helping shape the health system in which they receive much of their training.

Her experience working at hospitals throughout the Midwest and East Coast—first as a bedside RN, then as a cardiovascular clinical nurse specialist and later as a hospital executive—informs a unique perspective that allows her to link quality with fiscal stewardship and improved patient outcomes.

She considers her nursing vocation, which has included caring for those critically ill, an extension of her ministry, and she remains fully involved in her profession—serving as the lead reviewer for the American Nurses Credentialing Center Pathway to Excellence Program.

Sr. Maurita continues to be inspired and guided by the vision of Catherine McAuley, foundress of

the Sisters of Mercy, who encouraged those around her to reach out and serve “God’s dear poor.”

“I am blessed and filled with gratitude,” Sr. Maurita says, “for the many wondrous ways the gift of mercy inspires students, families, colleagues, religious and leaders to carry forth mercy as a sacred ministry in serving unmet needs of humanity, locally and globally.”

ROBERT F. KENNEDY MEMORIAL AWARD FOR TEACHING ACHIEVEMENT

The Creighton Students Union has the privilege of recognizing the achievements of students, staff and faculty through various awards throughout the year. However, the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award for Teaching Achievement is a recognition that stands above the rest. Each year, students from all nine colleges and schools nominate professors who embody the outstanding compassion and ability of an exemplary educator. Nominees must demonstrate a high level of competence in their field and must be able to present subject matter in interesting and effective ways. Beyond pure teaching aptitude, nominees must also inspire and serve students, taking considerable interest in and concern for students as individuals.

The Creighton Students Union is honored to recognize Annemarie Shibata, PhD, associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, as the recipient of the 2019 Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award for Teaching Achievement.

Shibata has served on the biology faculty as an associate professor of cellular neuroscience at Creighton since 2006. She has been a resource, mentor and advocate for students, even beyond their undergraduate years.

Annemarie Shibata, PhD, BS’92 Associate Professor, Department of Biology

One student remarks, “What sets Dr. Shibata apart from other professors is the time she spends preparing for each lecture, creating the highest quality experience so that her students receive and participate in the best possible learning opportunity every class.”

Shibata is a dedicated researcher and has received numerous grants, including from the National Institutes of Health. She shares that passion for research with students, for which she was honored with the Dr. and Mrs. Randolph Ferlic Undergraduate Research Mentor Award. As one student says, “Together, her ability to teach and conduct research at the highest level serves as an inspiration to all her students, and particularly, sets an example for the next generation of women in science.”

Shibata’s mentorship goes beyond the confines of the Creighton classroom, into the greater community, where she

brings students from her undergraduate lab to local schools to teach students about neurobiology.

For her outstanding aptitude for teaching, contributions to the field of research and commitment to students and Creighton University, the Creighton Students Union is proud to recognize Dr. Annemarie Shibata of the Creighton University College of Arts and Sciences as the 49th recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award for Teaching Achievement.

DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS, honoris causa

When Dan Semrad, a native of Fremont, Nebraska, graduated from Creighton University in 1971 with his business degree, he set off on a path that led to four decades of work in asset management and financial consulting. He began his career with Kirkpatrick, Pettis, Smith, Polian Inc., later joining A.G. Edwards in 1983 before moving on to the investment firm Smith Hayes in 2009. Currently, Semrad is a financial advisor in Lincoln, Nebraska.

His love of learning and thirst for knowledge led him back to Creighton, where he went on to receive a master’s degree in liberal studies in 2009 and in December completed another master’s in East-West studies.

Semrad is a passionate supporter of education and of Creighton University and its students.

Creighton’s new Kingfisher Institute is one beneficiary. The institute, a unique initiative inspired by Creighton President the Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD, seeks to foster innovative approaches to education, research and community engagement by yoking the liberal arts and humanities to health and other professions. It takes its name from the Gerard Manley Hopkins poem “As Kingfishers Catch Fire.”

Dan Semrad, BSBA’71, MA’09, MA’18 Financial Advisor

Through his support, Creighton established the Semrad Lecture Series in Non-Western Thought, and his philanthropy extends to Creighton initiatives in leadership, East-West studies, business and faculty development, as well as the Kenefick Chair

in the Humanities.

A man of Jesuit ideals, Semrad has taken a markedly different approach to his field of investment counseling by incorporating into his practice a concern for issues of sustainability and conservation. Over the years, he has developed a large investment portfolio of clients who share his interest in trading globally conscious stocks, investing in companies concerned with social issues and working hard to protect the world’s environment.

Semrad’s previous community and nonprofit volunteer work includes service on the advisory boards of the Nebraska Appleseed Foundation and

the Madonna Foundation, as well as on the board of directors of the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center and Art Farm Nebraska. He currently serves on three University boards: the National Alumni Board, the College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Board and the Graduate School Alumni Board. He was honored with the University’s Alumni Merit Award from the Graduate School in 2011. A steadfast friend of Creighton, Semrad continues to support developing students as leaders and enabling learning for others.

Traditions of Creighton

Creighton Crest The Creighton University crest includes elements representing the Creighton family, Creighton’s Jesuit tradition and the Omaha Archdiocese.

The gold stripes on the red field, in the upper left-hand quadrant of the shield, come from the family coat of arms of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The lion rampant comes from the Creighton family coat of arms, and the three seashells on a field of white and red sable come from the Wareham family coat of arms—paying homage to Creighton University’s founding families. The design for the shield’s final quadrant, in the lower left, comes from the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Omaha. The starburst behind the shield comes from the seal of the Society of Jesus.

Ceremonial Mace In the Middle Ages, the mace was a club used in battle and carried by a bodyguard to defend a person of authority. Over the years, it began to lose its warlike image and became a symbol of peaceful leadership.

At an academic institution, the mace is the symbol of the legal and chartered authority of the leadership to whom the board of trustees has delegated authority. When the ceremonial mace is present, the authority of the University is present. Use of the mace is reserved for occasions of outstanding importance, and it is an honor to bear the mace. Carrying it today is the president of the University faculty.

The Creighton University mace was designed and fashioned by Brian K. Besack, operations supervisor of the University’s carpenter shop, at the invitation of then president, the Rev. John P. Schlegel, SJ, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the University.

Using a cherry wood baluster from a long-abandoned staircase in the attic of Creighton Hall, the oldest building on Creighton’s campus, Besack designed and fashioned the shaft, head and foot of the mace. Each facet of the nine-sided head displays a bronze, gold-plated medallion bearing the name and founding date of the University’s schools and colleges. Its foot is sheathed in gold-plated brass, and cradled in its shaft rests the official seal of the University. At its top, the mace is crowned with a three-dimensional blue and gold medallion symbol of the Society of Jesus.

Graduation Honors Students may graduate with honors. Criteria for graduation honors can be found in the Creighton University catalogs. Students who have completed their degree requirements and meet the honors criteria at the time of print have their honors listed in this program, as well as on their diploma and transcript. Students who meet their degree requirements at a later date and meet the honors criteria may receive graduation honors that will be listed on their diploma and transcript.

Academic AttireThe history of academic dress reaches far back into the early days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required that all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the University of Coimbra wear gowns. In England, in the second half of the 14th century, the statutes of certain colleges forbade “excess in apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown. While European institutions continue to show great diversity in their specifications of academic dress, American colleges and universities generally have adopted the Intercollegiate Code for Academic Costumes. This code specifies design characteristics of gowns, hoods, caps and tassels, including pattern, material, color and trimmings.

For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctors’ gowns, edging of hoods and tassels of caps, the colors associated with the different subjects are as follows:

Edward and Mary Lucretia Creighton, along with Edward’s brother, John, settled in Omaha in the mid-1850s. John married Mary Lucretia’s sister, Sarah Emily Wareham, in 1868, and the four are considered the founders of Creighton University. Edward’s work with the transcontinental telegraph and freighting, ranching, railroading and banking became a major force in the city’s economic development. The two brothers were widely known for their business enterprises, and the two couples were also widely regarded for their philanthropy.

Edward died in 1874, and his widow included $100,000 in her will to establish Creighton College in memory of her husband. Mary Lucretia died in 1876, and her executors, who included her brother-in-law John, purchased 6.2 acres of land at the northwest corner of what is currently 24th and California streets. They began to build a school and transferred the land, building and additional securities to Bishop James O’Connor of Omaha.

The bishop asked the Jesuits to operate the school and the first president, Roman A. Shaffel, SJ, arrived in Omaha in late 1877; the school opened on Sept. 2, 1878. One priest, three scholastics, a layman and a laywoman formed the faculty. The school began with 120 students ranging in age from 6 to 30. On Aug. 14, 1879, Bishop O’Connor surrendered his trust to the Jesuits, who incorporated “The Creighton University” under Nebraska law. Much of the initial teaching was secondary-level; in 1891, the first baccalaureate degree was awarded.

Edward and Mary Lucretia’s generosity is credited with establishing Creighton College, while John and Sarah Emily’s philanthropy enlarged it to a five-school university. Today, Creighton University consists of nine schools and colleges:

• College of Arts and Sciences (1878) • School of Medicine (1892) • School of Law (1904) • School of Dentistry (1905) • School of Pharmacy and Health Professions (1905) • Heider College of Business (1920) • Graduate School (1926) • College of Nursing (1971; four-year bachelor’s degree program began in 1958) • College of Professional Studies (1983)
