Welcome, Family and Friends

T he University of Louisiana at Lafayette welcomes you, the families and friends of our distinguished graduates. UL Lafayette isn’t just a university. It is a community and you are an important part of it.

Since its founding in 1898, the University has been dedicated to improving the lives of its students. We join you in honoring our graduates and celebrating their accomplishments as they begin a new chapter in their lives.

Walk of Honor

v isitors to the UL Lafayette campus enjoy looking for graduates’ names on the Walk of Honor. The walkway, which begins near Martin Hall and surrounds the Quad, is paved with bricks engraved with graduates’ names, arranged alphabetically by year.

The Walk of Honor began with an idea from 1987 Alumni Association President Kenneth Ardoin. A groundbreaking was held in 1991. About 2,500 students are graduated each academic year.

Welcome

The academic procession at the Southwestern Louisiana Institute Commencement ceremony on August 4, 1938. It was the University's first summer Commencement. Dean F.M. Hamilton led the procession followed by (left to right): SLI President L.E. Frazar, and United States Senator Allen J. Ellender. The ceremony was held at Cypress Grove, which, at the time, was solid ground before it was transformed into Cypress Lake in the early 1940s.

Today, you are surrounded by family, students, and teachers who have shared your journey and have come to celebrate your success. On behalf of your entire University of Louisiana at Lafayette community, I congratulate you.

You have achieved one of the most important milestones of a lifetime. Your dedication and hard work during your time at the University have not only prepared you for a career. You have learned how to think critically and apply knowledge to solve problems.

The world needs your knowledge and passion.

I am confident that your education and experiences at UL Lafayette have prepared you to become strong contributors, each in your own way, to your global community. You are well on your way.

I was taught, and began to believe at an early age, that each of us has a responsibility to the greater good and that we ought to use whatever talents that we have to contribute to the greater good in some fashion. I encourage you to consider how you will use your abilities to serve others. Within this University’s culture of service, you’ve gotten a vigorous start.

Wherever life takes you, remember the joie de vivre of the Cajun and Creole cultures that you experienced here. It will keep you vital and enjoying life fully and deeply no matter where you go.

Members of the Class of 2015, welcome to the ranks of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s alumni. We will look for you to return home to the University and remain a vital participant in the life of your alma mater. Go forth, do good work, and send us news of your accomplishments.

All best wishes on your unfolding success.

In 1903, the first graduating class of the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute organized the Alumni Association. Those 18 graduates began a tradition of pride and support for their alma mater and maintaining connections with one another.

Those connections continue with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette graduating class of Fall 2015. Your experience with the Alumni Association begins upon graduation and stays with you throughout your life. Your Alumni Association membership is complimentary for one year following your graduation. Other alumni may also join the Alumni Association by contributing to the Alumni Loyalty Fund. The Loyalty Fund supports academic and student programs, as well as alumni programs. The Alumni Association also serves the University in many ways; by recruiting students and investing in endowed scholarships.

So whether you choose to stay local or relocate afar, there are alumni clubs and chapters in almost every state. What better way to network with fellow alums and meet fellow Ragin’ Cajuns than by attending a club or chapter event in your area. UL Lafayette alumni are ambassadors of our institution, its values and its spirit.

Please stay informed about what’s happening on campus or in your area! Throughout the year, the Alumni Association disseminates information about news and events. Stay current with us, so we may keep you current about your almamater! (You may do so by logging on to our website at LOUISIANAalumni.org)

Alumni and friends contribute to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for many valid reasons. They believe in lifelonglearning. They believe in the hope of the future, which a quality education provides. So many contributions are made for the betterment of our University. Whether it be attending a University function or showing your pride by wearing red andwhite, you are the key to the University’s progress. Remember...you are the past, present, and future of UL Lafayette.

fAll 2015 oUTsTAnding grAdUATes Each semester, the UL Lafayette Alumni Association honors the University’s outstanding Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette has a reputation for academic excellence, community service and its Ragin’ Cajun spirit. Established in 1898, it is the second-largest university in the state. It has one of the highest graduation rates among Louisiana's public universities. More than 18,000 students choose UL Lafayette each year. To ensure them a strong academic foundation and the best opportunities to compete in the global job market, University officials regularly review curricula to offer contemporary degrees. UL Lafayette has been ranked among the best universities in the nation by U.S. News Media Group, which includes U.S. News and World Report, and by The Princeton Review. It is also the most affordable university in Louisiana and among the top 10 percent of most affordable four-year colleges in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The University regularly receives support from the National Science Foundation, which funds only the most innovative research. In addition, four faculty have earned the NSF’s Early Career Award, given to outstanding scientists and engineers who have potential for leadership in their fields.

Community service is a hallmark of the university experience at UL Lafayette. It is a course requirement for all first-time freshmen, for example. Each academic year, students contribute about 150,000 hours of service as part of University courses. That service has an estimated value of about $3 million. Some students also participate in UL Lafayette’s AmeriCorps Community Service Program. Established in 1995, it is the only campus-based program in the state and is one of the oldest in the nation. Louisiana’s Cajun and Creole cultures are reflected in the University’s academics. For example, the archives of the Center for Louisiana Studies include one-of-a-kind recordings of Cajun and Creole music, oral histories and storytelling. UL Press specializes in books related to Louisiana, producing award-winning academic titles as well as best-selling general interest books. UL Lafayette’s Francophone studies doctoral degree program is the only one of its kind in the state. And, students may study Louisiana music to earn a bachelor’s degree in traditional music, one of only a handful of such programs nationwide. The University also has a beautiful, vibrant campus. Cypress Lake, a managed wetland, is shaded by its namesake trees and is home to native Louisiana wildlife, including herons, egrets and alligators. Residence halls offer living-learning communities, where students with similar interests live, study and socialize.

University Seal The seal was adopted May 11, 1926, when UL Lafayette was still known as Southwestern Louisiana Institute. Dr. Edwin Stephens, the University’s first president, helped design it, along with Ellsworth Woodward, director of the Newcomb College art school, and John McBryde, a professor at Tulane University. Elements of the seal reflect Louisiana’s history as both a French and Spanish colony. The three fleurs-de-lis refer to France, while the castle denotes Louisiana’s connection to Spain. The pelican is symbolic of Louisiana. Oak leaves represent the strength and endurance of the oak tree. The seal includes the Latin motto “Fortier, Feliciter, Fideliter,” which means “bravely, happily, faithfully.” The institution’s name was updated in 1960, when it was recognized as a university and became the University of Southwestern Louisiana. In 1999, USL’s name was changed to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette to better reflect its stature as the state’s second-largest university and an institution with statewide and national — rather than regional — influence. In that same year, the seal was modified to include elements of the Acadian and Creole flags to reflect the University’s cultural diversity. The gold star on a white background symbolizes Acadian culture; the red, gold and green stripes represent West African heritage.

Academic Dress and Heraldry The academic dress worn by the faculty and administration in the procession today originated in the medieval universities of Europe, where instructors were priests and members of religious orders. Students were clerks in holy orders, monks or priests themselves. In the unheated buildings, they wore habits with cowls, or hoods, that could be pulled over their heads for warmth. In 1894, a commission of American educators met at Columbia College with the leading supplier of academic robes. They created a dress code that was eventually accepted by almost all universities and colleges in the United States. The code was modified slightly in 1932 and remains in use today. Typically, degree candidates wear black gowns. At UL Lafayette, bachelor’s gowns and doctor’s gowns are vermilion; master’s gowns are black. The University’s distinctive fleur-de-lis is incorporated in the design of its graduation gowns. Bachelor’s gowns have pleated fronts, semi-stiff yokes and pointed sleeves. They are worn closed. The master’s gown is worn open, with the forearm protruding through an opening in the long sleeve. The doctor’s gown, also worn open, is more formal, with velvet panels around the neck that extend down the front edges. Three horizontal velvet bars are placed on the upper arm of a squared sleeve. The velvet is usually black, but may instead be a color that reflects the academic discipline related to the degree. The mortarboard is the usual headwear. The most notable feature of academic dress is the hood, reminiscent of the monks’ head coverings. The colors of the lining, folded so that they are exposed in the back, are the official colors and pattern of the university from which the individual received a degree. For those who have received a degree from UL Lafayette, for example, the hood is lined in vermilion with a white chevron. The master’s hood is three and one half feet long, the doctor’s hood, four feet. The color of the velvet border on the hood indicates the academic discipline of the individual’s degree. For example, the Ph.D., or doctor of philosophy degree, is identified by a blue border. You will see that the colors worn by members of the procession at UL Lafayette reflect its academic diversity; faculty have earned advanced degrees from institutions across the United States, as well as abroad.

Fleur-de-lis UL Lafayette’s fleur-de-lis is a federally registered symbol. Historically, the fleur-de-lis has been associated with the French monarchy, and used in other political and religious contexts. The University has used a fleur-de-lis as part of its identity since 1926, when three fleurs-de-lis were introduced in its seal.

Presidential Regalia The University president wears a handcrafted medallion, a miniature of the University seal, during Commencement and other formal events. Its chain includes small plates engraved with the names of the institution’s presidents.

UL Lafayette President Dr. E. Joseph Savoie also wears a lapel pin that once belonged to Dr. Edwin Stephens, the University’s first president, who served from 1900 to 1938. The pin’s design features the letters, “SLII,” which stand for Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute. Stephens gave the pin to Dr. Joel Fletcher, the institution’s third president, who served from 1941 to 1966. Fletcher passed it down to his grandson, who gave it to Savoie as an inauguration gift in 2009.

University Ring UL Lafayette’s ring signifies the bond between the University’s graduates and their alma mater. The red stone represents the University’s primary color,

vermilion, and also features its fleur-de-lis. The design incorporates other elements and images of campus life, including cypress and oak trees, the University’s seal, and Martin Hall, the main administrative building. Inside each ring is the inscription, “heart and hand” — the final three words of the University’s Alma Mater.

Retired NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Jake Delhomme had a football career built on hard work and perseverance. Jake played at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, currently named the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, from 1993-1997. He was the only true freshman quarterback to start for a Division I school in 1993. During his time at USL, Jake was a two-time Big West Conference Champion and finished his college career as the school’s all-time leader in passing yards & touchdowns. In 2006, Jake was inducted into the University‘s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Jake signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent after the 1997 NFL Draft. Beginning his career on the practice squad for the first two seasons, Delhomme found himself a spot in the NFL Europe with the Amsterdam Admirals and Frankfurt Galaxy during the NFL offseason for two seasons. He led the Frankfurt Galaxy to a World Bowl Championship in 1999.

In 1999, Jake played in his first career NFL game as a Saint, where he threw two touchdowns en route to a Saints victory. In 2003, Jake signed with the Carolina Panthers where he would be the starting quarterback from 2003 to 2009. Delhomme’s career ultimately took off while in Carolina. He holds most of Carolina’s records and led the Panther’s to a Super Bowl. He led the Panthers on eight game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime in the 2003 season, which were the most winning drives any quarterback has ever had in a single season. Jake appeared in Super Bowl XXXVIII in his first season as a Panther, where he holds the record for longest pass in a Super Bowl with his 85-yard pass to Muhsin Muhammad. During his time in Carolina, Delhomme led the Panthers to 2 NFC Championships and was the all-time Carolina passing leader with 19,258 yards.

In 2010, Jake went on to play for the Cleveland Browns where he would be named as the starting quarterback, but was unfortunately set back due to injury. Delhomme’s final step in his career would be with the Houston Texans in 2011, where he was a veteran backup quarterback.

Jake and his wife, Keri, reside in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana with their two daughters, Lauren and Lindsey. Along with his brother and father, Jake currently spends his retirement from the NFL raising and training thoroughbred race horses. Jake currently holds a seat on the Board of Directors for Mid-South Bank, on the Founders Advisory Board of LHC, and is the Vice President of the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association. He is also a member of the RCAF Capital Campaign Committee.

Alma Mater

Alma mater, beloved old Southwestern,

Pride of our Southland so fair!

Oaks and pines and sweet magnolia’s beauty,

Show forth thy charms so rare,

Alma mater, for honor, truth and wisdom

Thy halls for aye shall stand

Loyal sons and daughters sing

Proclaiming here’s my heart and hand.
