I-AREA, HOUSES AND POPULATION
. 1. This table sh9ws for each district its area, the number of towns and villages, the number of occupie<l houses and the total urban and rural population, male and female in the province. Similar figures are jVVen for 9 states of the Chhattisgarh States Agency and one state of the Bhopal Agency. The remaining 6 statl>s ()[the· Chhattisgarh States Agency which were hitherto included in the C. P. and Berar Census Ht~ports were allotted thilf time to Bihar for the pnrpose of enumeration anQ. tabulation and their statilltics will appear in the Bihar tables. The difference between some of the areas shown here and those in the corresponding table of 1931 is due to transfers to Orissa and adjustments within the province as woll as recalculation of areas as explained in the flyleaf of table II.
2. The area given in this table and Provincial Table I in some cases differ because the figures given in this table were adopted from .the district figures ~ven by the Survey of India while in Provincial '!'able I,
. the tehsil figures furnished by the Deputy CommiSsioners were adopted according to the instructions from · the Census Commissioner for India.
3. The urban population is 2,189,805. Excluding towns which have less than 5,000 population tho urban population is 2,152,406 and the urban/rural ratio 10: 75. '

ll-VARiA.TION iN POPULATION DURING FIFTY YEARS
· This table compares the population as ascertained at the census of 1941, of each district in the Central Provinces and Berar and the States of the Chhattisgarh and Bhopal A~encies (nine of ChhattiRgarh and ono .QfBhopal) with that of the 5 previous censuses. The figures of the previous censuaes differ from those shown in the previous census reports owing to subsequent transfers of territory from one district or stafjj to ;another, wi~hin and wi~ho~t the province and also to the recalculation of area. The effec~ of these changes on ;the populat:on of the districts or states concerned has been calculated and tbe figures adJusted accordingly.
' . . The following are the districts and states' for which transfers of territory have taken plao.e :-
Between 1881 and 1891.-Mandla, Balaghat and Seoni. Between 1891 and 1901.~Nagpur, Seoni, Hoshangabad, Nimar, Betul, 1\landla and Balllghnt. Between 1901.and 1911.-Saugor, Na.rsingpur, Mandla, Balaghat, Hoshangabad, Nimnr, Betu),
; Chhindwara, Chanda, Drug, Raipur, Bilaspur, Amraoti, Akola, Buldana. and Yeotmal.
Between 1911 and 1921.-Da.moh, Seoni, Hoshangabad, Chhindwara, Wardha, Nag~ur, Bh;ndara, - Balaghat, Raipur, Amraoti, Akola, Buldana, Yeotmal and Kanker State.
Between 1921 and 1931.-Drug, Raipur, Amr.l.oti, A kola, Buldana, and Chhuikhadan State. Between 1931 and 1941.-Raipur, Bilaspur, Saugor, Damoh, Hoshangabad, Narsinghpur, Chhindwara
andSeoni. An area 1 432 square miles from Raipur district and an area of 80 square miles from Bilaspur di11trict
were transferr~d to the new province of Orissa. T~e old districts ~f Damoh, Narsingpur and.l:!.e~ni weru amalgamat3d with Saugor, Hoshangabad an~ ~hhu~;dwa.~a. ~espect1vely and the Nerbudda diVIsion WM 3bolished thus reducina the namber of the admm1strative diVISions from five to four.

. The following were the transfers of districts from one administrative division to another due to tho :abolition of the Nerbudda division. ·
