Biographical Profile
Cal Alley became a monument in Memphis and Tennessee; throughout his life, he
became the image of witticisms and quirky thoughts about politics and everyday life. Born in
1915 and foreshadowing his future career ambitions, Cal Alley was the son of James Pinckney
Alley, creator of the syndicated cartoon panel, “Hambone’s Meditations” and the first editorial
cartoonist at The Commercial Appeal beginning in 1916. After their father’s death, in 1934, Cal
and his brother James continued drawing “Hambone’s Meditations,” which depicted the thoughts
of an African American man, often in crude dialect, until 1968, when the cartoon ended under
pressure from civil rights groups.
In 1939, Cal Alley married Miss Geraldine Jehl and began his career in Missouri at the
Kansas City Journal. But after the Journal folded and Alley was laid-off, he then turned back to
his home state of Tennessee in 1942 and continued his career in Nashville at the Nashville
Banner. During his time at the Nashville Banner, Alley created countless cartoons, often
capturing popular attitudes about the horrors of World War II. Moreover, during Alley’s time in
this capital city, he depicted wars going on within his own purview, including the political and
social battles happening in the wake of one of the largest and deadliest wars in history. In 1945,
Alley decided to move back to the city of his birth, Memphis, to become a cartoon pundit. He
continued to boldly chronicle wars and social upheaval while becoming a highly respected and
revered cartoonist. Cal Alley passed away in 1970 at age 54, and lives on today through his
drawings and the significant contributions he made in the fields of journalism and cartooning.
