Local merchants were threatening to withhold their taxes and pay them into a trust fund if something was not done about the crime in the Carletonville CBD. The businessfolk, under the aegis of Business Merchants of Carletonville, were fed up with the lack of response to

previous discussions with, and petitions to, the TLC and the CPF. As a result, they were giving the council a deadline – 15 March 1998 – to get its act together. After that, the taxes would go into a trust fund ‘until such time as the area is safe and normal business can take place’.

They were complaining that crime was rampant in the Gateway Mall area and the CBD and that nothing was being done about it.

Residents in some areas of Carle-tonville will be without water on Saturday, when the municipality will be working on the main water supply to Carletonville.

The Merafong City Local Munici-pality told the Herald on Tuesday that the water interruption on 10 February will last from 05:00 to 12:00.

The central business district (CBD) and the area of the 007 shop-ping complex will be affected.

The Welverdiend area is soon going to become a hive of activity with two big new housing projects taking place in the area.

Residents driving on the road from Welverdiend to the R501 have recently noticed that a new project has been started in the area. According to the Merafong City Local Municipality, the project is called Varkenslaagte Mega Project. It is funded by the Department

of Human Settlements and executed by the Housing Development Agency. A total of 12 491 housing opportuni-ties will be created, some of which will be walk-ups or flats.

In the meantime, the launch of ano-ther project, the Elijah Barayi Village Mega City, is also scheduled to take place on 13 February.

According to the Merafong City Lo-cal Municipality, the Elijah Barayi Vil-lage is a Greenfield, mixed housing de-velopment situated in Welverdiend.

The project will also have amenities that include a shop-ping centre, business facility sites, an FET College, primary and secondary schools, cli-nics, a library and a police sta-tion.

‘It is estimated that the con-struction activities in the de-velopment would generate job opportunities ranging from general labour to senior ma-nagement and the creation of SMMEs. Long term job oppor-tunities will also be created from the development delive-rables after the construction,’ the municipality says.

The MEC for Cogta (Coope-rative Governance and Traditional Af-fairs) and Human Settlement, Mr Paul Mashatile and the Merafong City Local

Municipality’s executive mayor, Ms Maphefo Mogale-Letsie, will head the official project launch.

Plans for new activities at Blyvoor Gold Mine are gathering momentum.

In an advert placed in last week’s He-rald, the environmental consultancy firm, Digby Wells announced that the draft scoping report had been released and will be available at the Carletonville and Fochville libraries. Blyvoor Gold plans to resume activities at the mine.

The company is planning to conduct underground mining activities at the old Blyvoor 5 Shaft and recover gold through a metallurgical plant on its pre-vious site.

It is estimated that work at the Bly-voor underground workings will conti-nue for more than 30 years, during which the tailings reclamation will be staggered.

According to the company’s plans, the old Blyvoor 7 tailings facility will be mined over the first eight years and those at the No. 6 tailings facility over the next seven years. The three tailings dams at Doornfontein will be mined from year 15 to the end of the mine.

Blyvoor Gold is currently applying for an air emissions licence for the ope-rations on the two proposed metallurgi-cal plants.

In the meantime, the well-known en-vironmentalist and CEO of the Federa-tion for a Sustainable Environment (FSE), Ms Mariette Liefferink said on Tuesday that she was not happy with the processes that have been followed.

‘I am very upset because it has emerged that the environmental plan for the new project was already ap-proved last year, without noting our

previous concerns. ‘We officially complained to the

Minister of Environmental Affairs about this because we believe the public participation process was already flawed and that everything would have to be redone. I communicated this to Blyvoor Gold but I have not yet received a response.

‘As the FSE is currently involved in a court case over Blyvoor’s pollution of the environment – headed by the Green Scorpions – Blyvoor Gold also knows very well that, as an affected party in the proceedings, we cannot just be ignored,’ Liefferink told the Herald.

She says the FSE regards the air pol-lution from tailings dam No. 6 as a much bigger environmental concern than the emissions from the two planned recovery plants (for which the

air emissions licence has been sought). The former is so bad that it often clouds the road between Elandsridge and Bly-voor completely.

The draft scoping report is available for public comment from 2 February to 6 March. For more information on the public participation process, contact Ms Nondumiso Gwala at 011 789 9495.

‘Jobs will be created and Blyvoor will pay Rand Water for the consumption, which will take pressure off the munici-pality. The existing infrastructure (in-cluding bulk services) will be refur-bished and upgraded. The crime (ille-gal miners) and the absolute decay at Blyvoor will be addressed and, therefo-re, this matter can only be seen as posi-tive,’ a spokesperson for the Merafong City Local Municipality replied when asked for their view on this matter.

The possibility that the lion that scared the residents of the Fochville area might have moved closer to Carletonville surfaced this week.

According to Mr Frank Mogolane, a ward committee member at the Moha-leshoek informal housing area next to the R501road between Carletonville and Fochville, another resident phoned him at around 09:30 on Sa-turday morning with some unusual news. ‘He said he had seen a tiger cross the main road towards our side on the hill after Vaal Maseru,’ he told the Herald on Monday morning.

Mogolane phoned the police and the area’s ward councillor, Ms Annett Ven-ter, and started asking if anyone else had seen or heard anything unusual.

Several residents came forward, claiming that, towards the end of last week and over the past weekend, they had heard something roaring at night.

On Monday, the Herald and Mogo-

lane went to the area where the roaring was heard, together with Ms Lomile Tsolvane, a resident who says she had heard them, and a friend. This area, situated just over the road between Carletonville and Fochville, is rocky with lots of trees and there are several kraals where residents keep cattle, goats and horses.

An old man, only known as ‘Ntate Radintonki’, was looking after the ani-mals at the time of the visit. According to him, he had not personally heard the roars but some of the other cattle owners told him they had.

‘We are very worried about this situ-ation. Because there is not enough wa-ter in Mohaleshoek, many people walk over the road into the veld to go and get some. A lot of them use a tree on the way to Vaal Maseru as a toilet. If there is a wild animal around, as many people are claiming, this puts these people, especially, in great danger,’ Mogolane said.

On Tuesday, Mr James Lang of the South African Predators’ Association (Sapa), who had previously helped the police to try and track down the lion or lions roaming in the Fochville area, said he has not been informed of the latest claims. He said, however, that, since the last sighting last year, the lion that previously roamed Fochville had not been seen again. Lang previously told the Herald that leopards are known to roam in the Gatsrant area. He added though, that leopards do not roar like lions and that, as lions can easily move large distances per day, it is not impossible that the lion that had previously roamed in the Fochville area had now moved.

‘These animals learn how to move around without coming into contact with humans. If anyone spots tracks in another area that can be proven to be those of a lion, we will gladly come and see whether we can help to track it again,’ he told the Herald.

‘The ward councillor needs to sub-

mit the list of needs that have been identified by the community for the purposes of the integrated develop-ment Plan (IDP) and the sourcing of funds. That will include the request for the provision of water and sanita-tion.

‘The water is delivered weekly and the consumers are urged to use water sparingly,’ a spokesperson for the mu-nicipality answered when asked what would be done to address water shor-tages in Mohaleshoek.

Has the Fochville lion found a new place to roam?

Ms Lomile Tsolvane points to where she heard the roars over the weekend.

On Tuesday, Carletonville Hospital de-nied allegations that there was no food in the hospital for the past week.

During the week, members of the pu-blic had been complaining to the He-rald that there was a food shortage at the facility.

‘Today, they handed out porridge to the patients, including those on special diets, in the morning, They went on to serve pancakes and eggs in the after-noon and now, in the evening, they dis-hed up vetkoek with soup.

‘The food is believed to have been a donation,’ complained an upset mem-ber of the public on 30 January.

By Tuesday, 6 February, people were taking to social media to advise mem-bers of the community to take food to their loved ones in the hospital them-selves.

On that day, the Herald asked a spokesperson for this hospital, Mr Ma-thabo Letsoalo, to comment on the alle-gations that there was apparently no food at the hospital.

‘These allegations are not true. The department has had liquidity difficul-

ties and, as a result, some suppliers were not able to deliver certain items. All meals have been provided and conti-nue to be provided although we are not able to adhere to the meal planner at times,’ Letsoalo assured.

When asked how the matter had been sorted out, Letsoalo said the hospital had used a number of mechanisms to ensure that the patients are being provi-ded with meals. These include asking the suppliers to deliver the goods with the understanding that the hospital will liaise directly with central office on their behalf to speed up the payments.

Another intervention was to borrow from other institutions that are able to assist. A third was to use other hospital funds to maintain supplies.

‘Fortunately, there have since been payment runs and we are now in the process of replenishing all stores,’ Let-soalo said on Tuesday evening.

He added that the hospital had not been affected at all by an alleged medici-ne shortage that, according to a press release by the Democratic Alliance, had resulted from a computer failure at the Auckland Park Medical Supplies Depot.

Allegations of patients without food untrue,’ says Carletonville Hospital

A man who recently claimed to have been assaul-ted by police was found guilty on another charge in the Oberholzer Magistrates’ Court.

On 25 January, Jean Paul Smith (33), a resi-dent of Doornfontein, was found guilty of theft and sentenced to a fine of R4 500 or three months’ imprisonment, R1 500 or a month of which is suspended for five years. If he is found guilty of the same offence during this time, the suspended sentence will automatically kick in.

According to Col Wessel Prinsloo of the Carletonville Detective Services, this sentence stems from an incident in November last year in which Smith stole items from vehicles that were being towed in by the towing business in Carletonville where he worked at the time.

During an inspection, his employer noticed that items were missing from the towed vehicles and confronted Smith.

It later emerged that Smith had used his cell phone to inform his wife that he was going to sell the stolen goods, which were later found back. Smith is not a newcomer to trouble. He was found guilty of assault and crimen injuria in 2016 and, in 2008, he was found guilty of be-ing in possession of drugs.

The case of business theft, in which Smith claims members of the police in Carletonville had assaulted him, is also still being heard in court. This assault is currently being investiga-ted by the Independent Complaints Directorate.

At the time of Smith’s alleged assault, a war-rant of arrest had been issued for him because he had failed to show up in court.

aanneemlik is (Rom 12:1).

Só kan jy ‘n Zuma, Malema, Motlante of selfs ‘n “Guptas” bestel.

Jy kan kies of jy wil lag of huil

Hierdie spyskaart teen die muur van ‘n klein winkeltjie, laat ‘n mens nogal glimlag.

Despite millions of rands having been spent on repairing sinkhole damage to its sewerage infrastructure in the past year, residents of Khutsong Ext. 3 are still facing major sewage leaks.

On Monday, sewage was still flo-wing in several places in this residen-tial area. In some places, sewage was spewing from manholes in yards and streets while in others, the toilets of adjacent houses were overflowing. The addresses of some of the affected houses were numbers 2930, 2321, 6039, 5964, 5961, 6501, 6223, 6225, 6231, 6230m 6643, 6641, 6646 and 6257.

In addition to the stench and un-healthy conditions, the dams of sewa-ge had led to an increase in mosqui-toes and flies in several places.

Ms Diana Zitha of No. 6643, whose arms were covered in mosquito bites, complained that she couldn’t sleep at night because of the smell and the mosquitoes.

The residents of Ext. 3 echoed their previous concerns that, despite a con-tractor being paid millions to repair the infrastructure last year, conditions have got steadily worse.

The Herald asked the Merafong Ci-ty Local Municipality for comment on Tuesday.

‘Khutsong Ext. 3 is one of the most challenging areas, especially concer-ning the sewerage. The area will be ad-dressed under the water and sewer network replacement project, which is currently at the design stage,’ said a

spokesperson. The Herald specifically asked what

improvement last year’s work in Ext. 3, paid for from the disaster fund, had brought in the living standards of the community.

‘Ext. 3 has three sewer lines that are connected to the newly-constructed 300 mm line to the waste water treatment works. Two of the lines are flowing. It is the one nea-rest to the sinkhole that is causing problems,’ the spokesperson said.

No relief for Ext. 3 residents

Ms Diana Zitha shows where the mosqui-toes have bitten her on her arm. These mosquitoes breed in the sewage.

The Merafong City Local Municipality says it does not currently have the money to repair damage to the Carle-tonville Sports Centre.

This week, the municipality res-ponded to an article in last week’s He-rald about widespread theft and van-dalism at the facility. Parts of the in-frastructure of the section next to the athletics track like roofing, bricks, and metal pipes have been, and still are being, stolen by thieves who appa-rently gain access through the entran-ce which was once secured by a gate.

‘The municipality has identified the problem at the Carletonville

Sports Complex and has taken the initiative to acquire the resources to repair the damaged infrastructure. However, the material could not be procured and repairs could not be undertaken because of the financial constraints facing the municipality,’ a municipal spokesperson replied when questioned about it on Tuesday. ‘A business plan with the detailed needs for the Carletonville Sports Complex has been compiled for the costing of the material required as part of the budgeting process for the repairs. The municipality will make the necessary budget allocations as soon as there are signs of financial re-covery,’ the spokesperson added.

Thanks to the quick response by emer-gency personnel, a house fire in 23rd Avenue in Welverdiend was stopped be-fore major damage occurred on 31 Ja-nuary.

The family’s home was saved by three Gladiator Distress Alert employ-ees after a call was received with the news that a fire had broken out in one of the bedrooms. The three emergency medical care workers, two of whom are actually firemen who do extra volunta-ry work, rushed to the scene of the fire. Two of them, Theuns de Bruyn and Bongani Mothongwane, together with Riaan de Bruyn, got to work immedia-tely. According to Mr Eugene (Pottie) Potgieter, the director of Gladiator, the brave men accessed the room where the fire had started, grabbed a hose-pipe and extinguished the flames. ‘These three men stopped an entire house from burning down and, alt-hough there is some smoke damage, it’s nothing that soap and water can’t fix,’ added Gerrit Bradnick, the opera-tional manager of Gladiator Distress Alert. The family only lost a bed and not their entire residence. It is suspected that the fire was caused by a possible electrical fault.

behaal.

“As jy nie daar was nie, het jy uitge-mis,” sê mnr. Beeslaar.

Prestige-atletiek by Wonnies ‘n groot sukses
