St Dominic’s Priory College

Welcome to all our students and families, old and new to our 2016 school year. As a new year begins there can be a tide of emotions that we can experience: from sleepless nights, excitement, joy, enthusiasm, nervousness and that’s just

the teachers! Yesterday we welcomed our students to their new classes. There were smiles and a building sense of excitement as many students eagerly waited for the bell to ring so they could see their new classroom and meet their teachers. The beginning of the year can be a challenging time for students and for parents so always remember to come and ask any questions or express any concerns as soon as they arise. If you feel that you need a bit of time, then see your child’s teacher to make an appointment. It is busy in the morning and afternoons and teachers like to give the proper consideration to your concerns.

ParkingParking and school drop off and pick-ups are always a problem! Please read the information sheet very carefully. Remember that the restricted area outside of the Barnard Street gate is a kiss and drop zone - Two minutes only and the driver may not leave the car. After school, teachers will bring your children to you at your car. Please be considerate of the neighbours and do not pull up in front of driveways, including our own. Inspectors are always around at the beginning of the year and the fines are expensive! This area is for all parents! If you want to come in you must not park there during the restricted hours. This is fair for all parents and we ask that you respect this rule.

Tuesday 9th FebruaryYear 6s Host Assembly @2:30pm

Primary Parent Information Night @7:00pm

Don’t forget our Parent Night on Tuesday, February 9th in the Hall. Come along for wine and cheese with the staff

and other parents at 7.00pm; we will start the more formal part of the evening at 7.30pm. We are planning on being finished by 8.45pm at the latest. This is a very important night as this is the opportunity for you to meet in class groups and hear all about class routines and expectations. We hope to see you all there. In the event of hot weather (over 35c) the evening will commence in the classrooms at 7.30pm. There will be a note going home about this.

We will have our first official Assembly in the hall next Tuesday 9th February at 2:30pm. The Year 6s will be hosting and you are more than welcome to attend.

Sunday 14th FebruaryFamily Mass @9:30am

Another important date for the calendar is Sunday February 14th. This is our Family Mass, in the Gym, at 9:30am. See the main section of the bulletin for more information.

Fridays (starting 19th February)Year 4/5/6 Running Club @8:10am

Year 4/5/6 Running Club will be at 8:10am on Friday mornings, beginning Week 3. A note will be coming home soon.

We wish you all a smooth transition back to school routines and the 2016 school year, as we prepare for exciting learning experiences, new challenges, new friendships and new adventures.

Primary Newsfrom Ms. Cate O’Leary, Primary School Coordinator

Staffing NewsTes Rodrigues will not be returning this year to teach the Year 2 class as originally anticipated. Tes and her husband Kris are excitedly expecting the arrival of their second child. We wish them all the best. In Tes’ place a familiar face has returned! We are very pleased to welcome Naomi Bramham as the Year 2 teacher and as many of you know, she is very familiar with our school’s philosophy and pastoral care of our students. We also welcome Amy Waters as our new Music teacher for years Reception to Year 6. Amy has previously taught Music at St Michael’s College and come to us highly regarded. We know you will make them very welcome.

Walking through all the classrooms you can see that considerable time, thought and care has gone into the preparations needed for the beginning of the school year. We are very fortunate to have on our staff teachers who are dedicated to ensure good teaching practice and work hard to create stimulating learning environments for all our students. Not only has staff spent considerable hours planning curriculum, preparing and organising classrooms but also addressing the specific needs of the children in their care. We thank them for their hard work.

RemindersWe have a ‘No Hat No Play’ policy and so, please make sure your daughter has her sport hat with her every day or leaves it at school. Years 3 to 6 students have a School Planner and so it is important that you read the information and policies in the front. Please support us with this, as the policies are clear and are important for the school and for the girls. Reception to Year 2 students will bring home a copy of the Uniform Policy for you to keep. We ask that students only wear sport uniform on the days that it is required. The rules apply equally to everyone. If there is a valid reason then please supply a note in the planner or message book. Black or Navy ribbons only and long hair must be tied back.

We are getting familiar with using lockers and managing laptops. This is the first year of the MYP program.I’m excited about going on a camp and being a guide. - AlexiI’M excited to get a lap top and have my own pad lock. - Ella

Parents & FriendsWelcome back to school for 2016. On behalf of the P&F

Committee, we hope that you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year break, and that everybody is refreshed and looking forward to the year ahead. Michelle, Irene and I are entering into our second year as President, Vice President and Secretary and look forward to another successful year ahead. All of the P&F committee members that assist us are highly organised and experienced and make our roles so much easier. We especially welcome any new families to the school as well as any families who are continuing at the school and have not had the opportunity previously to be part of the P&F to join us at our meetings and to assist us throughout the year.

Family MassWe are beginning to prepare for our first community event this year, the Family Mass, on Sunday 14th February. The P&F provide morning tea, as well as gelati, soft drinks and a sausage sizzle for sale after the mass. This is a great opportunity for new families to meet and others to catch up again. Your help on the day would be much appreciated. We require assistance with preparing, serving or cleaning up. We kindly ask that you complete the slip enclosed in this Bulletin and return it as soon as possible to advise if you are able to help out. Please expect a reply from us on the Friday prior to the Mass, (please note we may need to roster you where needed and not as requested).

Parent-Teacher Information NightsWe will attend your daughters’ Parent-Teacher night over the next few weeks to provide you with more information on the P&F activities planned for 2016. At these sessions you will be given a copy of the Events for 2016 brochure to assist your family in planning for the school’s social events. Please keep the guide as your reference throughout the year.As the year progresses we will ask for your help via the Bulletin prior to the events. In addition, you can leave your name with your daughter’s class teacher or the front office, accompanied by your offer of help or please feel free to contact us directly via our emails: Maria: [email protected] Michelle: [email protected] appreciate any assistance that you can offer and we thank you in advance. We understand that time is valuable but your help contributes to help make our school a better place for all of our daughters. We also look forward to seeing new and existing parents at the P&F meetings which are held once a term in the evening. The first meeting will be held on Wednesday February 24th – further details to follow. We look forward to meeting you at the upcoming parent meetings and Family Mass.

Maria Lappas, Michelle Hogan & Irene Drousas

Why is it essential that parents attend the Information evenings?

You have entrusted your daughter’s education to teachers who will have a major influence on her education and well-being. You need to know who they are and their expectations. You will be helped by understanding the policies which directly affect your daughter’s learning especially the recently completed Academic Honesty Policy and the Assessment Policy.

Each of the Year levels has in addition a special program related to the specific needs of that group. In Year 12 that will be assistance from an educational Psychologist. In Year 11 that will include some attention to the research Project. In Year 10 there will be follow up in the areas of the MYP Personal Project. In Year 9 the agenda will include high quality assistance for parents with the world. In year 8 there will be many important aspects re the day to day world of her learning and well being.
