Contracting In 1992,....Ok, So What's New?

Interclima '91, the 12th International Exhibition ofHeating, Refrigeration and Air conditioning will be heldfrom 12 to 16 November 1991 at the Porte de VersaillesExhibition Centre in Paris.Stands will be set out in the five major sectors ofenvironment control:Heating - Multi-energy boilers, burners, radiators,convectors, heat recovery systems, new energies, pumps,valves and fittings for environmental control, tools;

Hot water production;Refrigeration - Machinery and equipment for industrialrefrigeration, compressors, condensation and liqUidcooling units, etc;

Air conditioning - Air conditioning and air treatmentequipment, exchangers, fans, fIlters, air ducts anddiffusers.Regulation, measurement, control - Energymanagement systems and equipment.

Highly efficient completeheating systems as well asindividual components toprovide fuel efficient, totalcombustion with the lowestpossible pollutantemissions are the type ofexhibits being sought bythe organisers of INTHERM92 (Stuttgart, Germany, 10- 14 March 1992).

Such products areparticularly needed in the

market which istraditionally feast orfamine, how can theseheadaches be managed?

IAll contractors havemanagement systems torun the business withstrict financial control.Because the managementsystem is crucial to howwell the business serves itscustomers, internationalstandards of managementquality have been set up(ISO 9000). Clients willnow choose fromcontractors who havereached an acceptablestandard of qualitymanagement.

The key areas forinvestigation by certifyingofficers are procurement;inspection and test;installation; specialprocesses; documentcontrol; quality plans andmanuals; organisationalmethods and skillstraining.

The cost-effective way tobring your managementsystem to an approved andcertified level is to use anexperienced consultant. Inmost cases only fme tuis required.

All these problems and youhaven't made a penny yet.Maybe you won't! In a

A long long time agocontracting was simple ...buy the materials, providethe labour, read thedrawings and collect themoney. That's a far cryfrom today's scenario.Reading drawings is nolonger simple, new lawsand trade practices meanthat lack of up-to-dateknowledge can result inmajor problems due tomisunderstanding.

Sailmaking involvestextile engineering, material specificationand customer liaisonof the highest quality.

FromSailmakingto Air

elivery

McWilliam Sailmakers have beenmaking world-beating yacht sails inCrosshaven, Co Cork for the last 20

years. McWiliam customers - using sailsdesigned and constructed in Crosshaven have won Irish, British and WorldChampionships against the toughestinternational competition.

Sailmaking involves textile engineering, material.specification and customer liaison ofthe highest quality. McWilliam Sailmakers arebringing this level of expertise andprofessionalism to the building servicesindustry with their textile air-delivery socks. These are custom-built to suit therequirements of each location and arecurrently installed in 15 sites throughoutIreland.

McWilliam Sailmakers were introduced to thisopportunity for diversification by John Russellof the lOA Linkage Scheme. Since then, thecompany has worked with Bruno Panetta ofThermo-Logic Ltd, Aeneas Murphy of Brian AFlynn Ltd, Martin Mahon of Foodenge Ltd,and Harry Kaiser of Rockwell ConstructionsLtd.

A research project on fabric permeability andair flow patterns is currently being conductedin conjunction with the mechanicalengineering department of Cork RTC.

New Air-Delivery Method -Traditionally, airhas been circulated through metal ducts. With the McWilliam system the metal ductsare replaced by textile socks into which air ispumped from the delivery duct. The coolingair is expelled from the fabric over the wholelength and circumference of the sock.

Draught-free delivery - Since the air is notexpelled at individual gratings, the velocity islow as it leaves the sock. This results in adraught-free environment which reduces sickleave among the work force and reduces therisk of cross-line contamination in food halls.

No condensation - Another benefit of theair being expelled over the whole surface of

the sock is that the warm, moist air in theroom is prevented from touching the coldsock. Therefore, condensation onto the fabricis prevented.

Cheap to install, easy to modify - The lightweight of the socks allows them to besuspended from stainless steel wires attachedto the existing ceiling or walls. The socks areattached to these wires by webbing strapsand simple 'clips. In new installations it iscommon to find that other services obstructthe planned run of the socks. They are easilymodified to accommodate any changesnecessary.

Simple hygiene - Perhaps the greatestadvantage for the food industry is that thesocks can be easily removed and washed bya laundry. Depending on the efficiency of theair treatment plant, this is done three or fourtimes per year. McWilliam Sailmakers canmake arrangements for the washing to bedone by specially trained staff.

Sock-to-sock joins are made with zipfasteners to facilitate installation, removal andwashing.

Colour choice - For aesthetic reasons, coloured socks are often specified. A rangeof co'lours is available.

Easy access for moving equipment - Mostof the socks delivered so far have beeninstalled in the food sector. However,Airmotive on the Naas Road has installed onein its aero-engine plant. The socks can alsobe used in computer clean rooms, supermarkets, storerooms, and productionlines. Additionally, they can be installedvertically as architectural features in offices.

100% Irish-designed, sourced and made The fabrics used in the socks are woven anddyed in Ireland. This gives McWilliamSailmakers direct control over clothspecification and construction. Thepermeability of the material is monitored toensure quality control.

Minister of Statefor Science andTechnology,Michael Smith,

ID, launched the world'smost advanced catalyticheater at a trade exhibitionheld a Jury's Hotel recentlyby Brian MulhareAssociates Ltd.

The Teknicat heater hasbeen designed anddeveloped in Ireland andthe manufactUring plant atKenmare in Co Kerrycommenced full productionin April of this year withJohn Sullivan heading upthe operation.

The catalytic gas heater, which produces heatwithout a flame, is ideallysuited for use in areaswhere explosive solvents orpaint sprays are used.Drying time in the auto-

repair industry is reducedfrom two hours to fiveminutes on re-sprays. Theheaters have also beensuccessfully tested inhotels, shops and publichouses together with fabricplants and perfumefactories.

The Teknicat catalyticheater, which approaches98% efficiency with it'sunique airflow system, willoperate on natural gas orpropane. Finally, andmost importantly, Teknicatcatalytic heaters areenvironmentally friendly.

Also launched to the Irishmarket at the show wasthe Italian-made Roburrange of gas balanced-flueconvectors and a veryunique air conditioningcombination unit whichfeatures an atmospheric

gas burner within a sealedcombustion chamber forheating with an externalcondenser for summertimecooling.

All appliances are availablewith full electronic ignition,built-in digital timeclocksand feature a metallicpaint finish. Heat outputcapacities range from6,200 BTU's per hour to46,000 BTU's per hour, while nominal coolingpower of the Caldaria 10 is17,2000 BTU/h. RenzoOrlandi, the Robur ExportSales Manager, observedthat these technicallyadvanced productsintroduce a new concept tothe Irish H & V indusThe equipment iscompetitively-priced andshould appeal toarchitects, mechanicalengineers and contractors.

Blackheath, the Dorsetbased gas radiant tubeheater manufacturer, displayed both thestandard U tube heaterand their continuoussystem which features aseries 3,4,5 or 6 burners, each rated at up to 30kilowatts. According toSteve Richards, SalesDirector at Blackheath, thecontinuous system hasopened up new markepotential for their prod -Csas the burners can beplaced up to 20 metresapart which gives a veryeven spread of heatthroughout the complex.

Warm air systems inmodem, well-insulatedbuildings do not distributethe heat thoroughlywithout extensive and veryexpensive ductwork. Inaddition, radiant systemstypically require 25% to30% less fuel to providesimilar conditions to theirwarm air counterparts. A10 minute video whichfully explains the system isavailable from BrianMulhare Associates Ltd.

BuderusRe-definingBoiler DesignThe entire range of Buderusboilers is of the easy-cleandesign with large gas passageswhich are devoid of fins, pinsand baffles. Such opensection boilers make life fareasier for the service engineer.Such a design. especially inolder boilers, is oftenassociated with low efficiency.However. with the newBuderus models the necessaryturbulence within the boiler toachieve good heat transfer iscreated by the burner. Theresult is a flue gastemperature of under 190degrees C and an efficiency of84%.

The boilers are of robustconstruction with asubstantial weight/outputratio and are made fromcorrosion-resisting cast iron.Features include highefficiency. ease of assembly, ease of maintenance andminimal flue requirements.

The boilers are covered withan 80-mm inslulating jacket, protected with a blueenamelled steel jacket. Nopart of the jacket exceeds atemperature of 20C aboveambient and standing losseshave been reduced to .05%

The boilers are qUicklyassembled and. at the sametime, rendered permanentlygas-tight by a flexible masticsecured between a tongue andgroove seal. This preventsdamage to the insulatingcovers.

Which Energy Source Does It Better? This is a question which is often asked but one which is virtually impossibleto answer. The simple fact of the matter is that there are as manyparameters as there are arguments which influence the choice of energysource for a particular project. Consequently, in an effort to demonstrate themanner in which consultants approach the difficult task of specifying aparticular energy source, what follows are a number of actual case studiescovering electricity and Natural Gas. Of course there are other alternativessuch as LPG and Oil but, when approached, representatives from each ofthese sectors failed to get copy to us on time for publication.

from ESB.The Gold Shield Award is ESB's quality symbol for a well

The Hoval SR boilers havean output of 1OOOKw eachand are fired by Weishaupt2- stage natural gas burners. When designing both theHoval boiler and theWeishaupt burner, specialattention was given to reduceenergy consumption to theminimum.

The nett combustionefficiency is at least 89% onnatural gas, with stray lossesbeing limited to 0.8% ofnominal output (due toexcellent insulationcharacteristics). Weishaupthas as standard a fast-actingservomotor which gives rapidcontrol of output on naturalgas. British Gas CertificateClass 1 and BS 5885 are thestandards used for thegastrain. All componentshave been awarded the ISO9000 standard and havebeen type approved for theEC 1992 standards.

At a very early stage in theproject, the developer, JohnRonan, decided to provide aninternational standard ofoffice environment andcontrol. It was decided toinstall a full variable airvolume system withperimeter heating by meansof radiators, a buildingenergy management systemand a sophisticated energyefficient building skin.

THE CASE FOR NATURAL GAS

Bolands Building, Dublin

When you mention theBolands building inDublin, more often

than not the first thing tocome to mind is the fact thatit served as the headquartersof Eamon DeValera duringthe 1969 Rising. It hasalways been a landmark toDubliners, and the new officecomplex which now occupiesthe site seems destined tocontinue the tradition ofbeing a "landmark".

The development providesaround 130,00 sq ft of officeson six levels, and has beendesigned to present aflexible, highly-servicedquality working environment.

The decision to opt fornatural gas was an easy one, according to Paul O'BrienProject Architect. 'We go forgas automatically at thisstage. It's far moreeconomical than any of itsrivals, and in a very energyefficient building like this, it'sthe obvious choice. The gasboilers are Hoval units,

each office is controlled by aSOPAC TA 380 thermostat.

There are several systemsavailable for ice storage, withcoil-in-tank system being themost common.

Rather than chill the water asit is reqUired. it is possible tofreeze the water into ice atnight. when demand is lowand electricity is cheap, and tomelt this ice during the day toprovide chilled water as thedemand arises.

With nightrate electricityprices only a fraction of thedaytime rate, the savings onrunning costs are obvious, but where the Maximum

To give the same coolingcapacity as R22, the liquidflowrate of ammonia would beapproximately one third thatof R22. This is becauseammonia is roughly six timesmore effective as a refrigerantthan R22. For smallerrefrigeration systems thismeans that control devisesmust be much smaller, andthey can become easilyblocked. The approximate relative costsof various refrigerants aregiven below:

The Eliwell range ofrefrigeration and airconditioning electronic digitalcontrollers were introduced tocater for the complete needs ofthe industry.

One of their main featurestheir great flexibility. Theycan be adjusted to fit the exactrequirements for a number ofspecific applications such aswalk-ins, reach-in and frozenfoods cases, air handling unitsand heating systems. Theyalso eliminate the timeconsuming and labourintensive aspect of electricalpanel building andinstallations where mechanicalcontrols are used.

One example is the EWTB1000. This unit is a completerefrigeration plant controller, incorporating, temperaturecontrol, defrost controlmanagement, measurementand display of temperature,

CondensersThe heat-rejecting componentof every refrigeration system, itperforms the importantfunction of condensing the hotrefrigerant gas into cool liquid. The temperature at which itdoes this has an importantbearing on the efficiency of thesystem.

The condensing temperaturecan vary from 20c to 45c fornormal systems, depending onthe application and the time ofyear.

The graphs above right showthe relationship between bothcooling capacity and absorbedcompressor power, andevaporating temperature, witha change in condensingtemperature.

Obviously, redUCing thecondensing temperature cansignificantly improve theperformance of a refrigerationsystem. In fact, (with anevaporating temperature of 10c) if the condensingtemperature is reduced from40c to 30c, the coolingcapacity increases by 15% andthe absorbed compressorcapacity decreases by 10%.The life expectancy of thesystem also increases.

Ways to reduce condensingtemperatures are:

- Use of larger condensers;

- Improved location at thecondenser;

- Use of an evaporativecondenser.

The two basic types of coolstorage system designs arechilled water storage and icestorage. Ice storage is mostsuitable for supermarketapplications because it cansupply very cold air. Typically, the system depletes the icedUring the day. It thenrebuilds the ice supplyovernight, and also usuallycontinues to provide coolingdUring the night.

Further savings may bepossible if the ice storagesystem is integrated with the

operating cost, often equallinga store's annual profit.

The largest share ofsupermarket energy cost is forrefrigeration: Display casesrefrigerated 24 hours a dayaccount for more than half theelectricity used in the store.

As a point of interested, arecent study suggested that, inIreland, up to 17% of allelectricity used is forrefrigeration.

However, when conventionalelectric systems are forced tocontrol hUmidity, as insupermarkets, theirperformance is impaired. Theair in the store becomes toocool when the system isoperated long enough toremove sufficient moisturefrom the space, and reheatingmust then be used to achievea comfortable temperature.

Several technologies have beendeveloped to help supermarketowners achieve this optimalhumidity level more efficientlyand economically.

Of these, RSL, throughBaltimore Air Coil, offer suchsystem in Ireland. In factQuninnsworth is currentlyinstalling two such RSLsupplied systems.

Cool storage technology is ameans of shifting theelectricity demand for airconditioning from peak hours, when the cool air is needed, tooff-peak hours when electricityrates may be lower.

It isinteresting that while, in mostcases, the installer chooses thebrand, the consumer alsoinfluences the decision.

made plumbing and heatingproducts, an exhibition tookplace in the Greenhills Hotel,Ennis Road, Limerick last month. The exhibition, which featured awide range of quality Irishproducts in this sector, wasorganised by the Irish GoodsCouncil in association with the22 participating manufacturers.

According to Stephen Hughes,Manager, Industrial Department,Irish Goods Council, it is part ofa national marketing drive bythis sector of Irish industry toincrease sales and market shareby focussing on the quality, value and competitive merit of the Irishproducts.

"The key categories of the plumbing andheating market in Ireland represent annualsales in excess of £100 million", said MrHughes. "It is a highly-competitivemarketplace in which Irish firms havemaintained astrong position by offeringthe best products backed by the bestservice. But there is certainly scope forwinning additional new business bybuilding on existing reputation andvigorously marketing Irish products".

He added: ''The industry is notcomplacent about competition. Plumbingimports amount to £20 million annuallyand at least 15% of these sales could bewon by Irish manufacturers. In theindustrial heating and related categories, imports amount to £164 million a year andthere is potential for Irish companies tosecure about £40 million of this.Marketing activities such as this exhibitionreflect both the industry's commitment andthe level of support for Irish productsamong end users and specifiers".

A recent report values the Irish plumbingmarket at £69 million in annual sales.Almost two-thirds of this is made up ofsales of pipes and fittings. There isconsiderable growth potential, especiallyin the market for plastic pipes in internalbuilding services applications, whichhasn't yet started to develop in Ireland.

Other plumbing categories aresanitaryware, showers and showeraccessories, terminal fittings and waterheaters.
