It’s not the first time Boroondara has received recognition for its inclusive support for older adults. In 2012, the World Health Organisation named the City of Boroondara an Age-Friendly City. We were one of only six Australian cities at the time to receive this accolade.

The award recognises our innovative programs and services which have been tailored to meet the diverse physical, social and emotional wellbeing of our older residents.

These include:

§ Casserole Club

§ Telling Tales

§ Walk, Rest, Talk

§ Adult outdoor fitness equipment

§ Share, Care and Connect

Better Practice AwardsIn August, we were presented with the National Innovation and Excellence Award for our Age-Friendly Strategy.

I would also encourage you to check out our website’s newly developed ‘Over 55s’ section at www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/add-life, where you can discover over 500 health and wellbeing activities with just a couple of clicks (turn to page 4 and 5 for more detail).

developed a range of quality services and supports with a focus to enable independence, good health and wellbeing, or as it is coined “active ageing” in our community.

As part of our Age-Friendly Strategy and to celebrate our older adults the Boroondara Seniors Festival will feature this month from Thursday 4 to Friday 26 October 2018. The festival is our opportunity to celebrate our older adults and the value they add to life here in Boroondara.

I would encourage you, your family and friends to come along and enjoy over 60 free and low-cost events in our City.

As a Council we firmly recognise that our work to create and support an age-friendly City will be a continuing priority over the coming decade. Boroondara has the highest number of residents aged 85 years and over of any metropolitan local government area with 2.9% (4,632 people) falling into this age group. The number of Boroondara residents aged 60 years and over is also forecast to rise by 32% from 2011 to 2031 (the fourth highest in the Eastern Metropolitan Region).

Through our research connecting with older adults it is apparent they have a strong desire to remain independent and active at home, as well as in the community. In response we have

In 2012, Boroondara was recognised by the World Health Organisation as an age-friendly City. This is a reputation we have proudly maintained with the Federal Government officially acknowledging the community outcomes of our Age-Friendly Strategy in October with a prestigious Innovation and Excellence in Aged Care Award (read below for more detail).

Thank you for helping keep

our kerbside recycling

collections and processing

efficient and clean.

For more information about what items go in your kerbside bins as well as information on the Boroondara Recycling and Waste Centre, visit our website or call:

www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/waste-environment

9278 4588.

Don’t bag your recycling.

The most common contaminants found in kerbside recycling bins in Boroondara are:

1. Bagged material — all objects that go in the recycle bin should be loose, the exception is soft plastic packaging which maybe collected inside a plastic bag.

2. Non-recyclable glass e.g. drinking glasses, light globes or Pyrex containers — only glass jars and bottles with their tops and lids removed can be recycled. Fluorescent tubes, globes and compact fluorescent lamps can be dropped off at the Boroondara Recycling and Waste Centre (residential quantities only). Broken Pyrex and drinking glasses can go in your garbage bin.

3. Non-recyclable plastics e.g. polystyrene packaging, cups and meat trays — if white, these can be dropped off at the Boroondara Recycling and Waste Centre (residential quantities only). Coloured or black polystyrene can go in your garbage bin.

4. Textiles/rags/leather/footwear — items in good condition should be sent to charity. There are 10 donation bins in Boroondara (visit our website for location details). Items in poor condition can be placed in the garbage bin.

5. Organic material ie green waste — this should be placed in the green bin for fortnightly collection. For larger green waste, two additional collections can be requested per year through our bundled green waste collections in April and October.

6. Food — it’s important to remove all food from containers, bags and wrappers before going in the recycling bin.

With recent changes to the global recycling industry it’s more important than ever that we recycle items correctly. China’s new stringent policy means contamination must remain low.

Avoid common recycling errors

Did you know? The most common bird observed in Boroondara (and nationally) was the rainbow lorikeet, while unusual sightings included the powerful owl, azure kingfisher and nankeen night heron.

Whether you’re a beginner or expert birdwatcher, you can join the 2018 Aussie Backyard Bird Count.

Run by BirdLife Australia, this national event gathers information on birds living in urban spaces — in backyards, local parks, along creeks and railway lines. Surprisingly little is known about urban birds, so the week-long bird count provides important information for researchers and a great way for people of all ages to connect with nature.

Last year, 248 Boroondara residents participated in the event and recorded 8,060 individual birds and 85 different species. A total of 2 million birds and 635 species were observed nationally.

Riddell’s practice tends to serve a number of generations from the same family. “Each brief tends to be quite different given the ages, but you develop a relationship and sense of trust that spans years,” she says.

Sitting on a generous 1,000-square-metre site with a rear northern garden, the home’s potential was obvious. However, rather than focusing solely on its period charm, Riddell also spoke frankly to her clients about the Victorian villa’s constraints. While it certainly constituted an important part of the heritage streetscape, it was in need of attention. The once slate roof had been replaced and the original front awning had long gone.

“You could say the original house had a strong masculine feel, quite robust on its bluestone foundations.” She was also concerned with the sombre front rooms, devoid of light. “People lived very differently at that time. The focus was on the open fireplace, rather than the garden,” she adds.

An early Victorian villa in Hawthorn shares this year’s Heritage Award from our Urban Design Awards. Located in Lisson Grove, a picturesque street lined with many period homes, this house, dating from the mid-19th century and thought to be one of the oldest in the area, appears relatively modest compared to its neighbours.

“Our clients (a couple whose children had long left home) were looking for a period home in this area, something that came with history,” says architect Jane Riddell, Director of Jane Riddell Architects. She had already inspected a couple of properties for these clients, advising them on the potential and drawbacks for each. “They missed out on the other two places, but got lucky on the third attempt.”

three metres in height) on either side of the fireplace. The kitchen is also contemporary with streamlined white painted joinery and a central island bench, finished in granite. “The kitchen is fairly pared back to allow the garden to be centre stage,” she says. A wraparound verandah at the rear diffuses the northern light, its steel columns in keeping with the contemporary theme.

Although this house is substantial for a couple, it can be broken down into zones so that the spaces are far from overwhelming. “Having the ability to close off part of the house formed an element of the brief,” she says, who admires her clients’ move into a contemporary world. “When you’re working with clients, it’s important to show possibilities. But it’s also important to educate and show the best of both periods, past and present,” she adds.

line the passage connecting the two wings. The courtyard-style gardens on either side of this walkway, designed by John Patrick Landscape Architects and conceived in a low-maintenance Japanese aesthetic, further soften the lines between the two periods. And unlike the previous arrangement, where there was a steep set of stairs leading to the back garden, the ‘bridge’ as it’s referred to (flanked by floor-to-ceiling glass walls either side) features gentle broad timber steps, given there’s a slight fall across the property.

In contrast to the Victorian villa, the new Miesian addition is heavily glazed and appears to ‘float’ above the landscape. Screw piles were used below the veranda to support the structure, creating a ‘dialogue’ with the heavy bluestone foundations that feature in the Victorian home. As well as floor-to-ceiling glass walls framing the new open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, she inserted two large steel-and-glass pivotal doors (over

One of the highlights of the original house was the arched entrance, with its steel columns framing the passage. The team reworked the original front rooms, converting two of them into the main bedroom and ensuite. On the other side of the passage, two rooms were transformed into a study and a gymnasium. New skylights in each area increased the amount of natural light.

However, what the home really needed was an entire new contemporary wing, with a couple of additional bedrooms. “Our clients’ children often come over for a meal and end up staying the night,” she says.

Rather than simply attaching a modernist structure at the rear of the home to maximise the light and garden views, a bridge-like gallery passage was designed that links the past to the present. In a nod to the decorative steel columns greeting visitors to the house, fine steel poles
