Institute’s basic information
Bipin Tripathi Kumaon Institute of Technology, Dwarahat (Formely- Kumaon Engineering
college) came into existence in 20thApril, 1986 and its name transformed into Bipin Tripathi
Kumaon Institute of Technology in 2011. Academic session was started in two branches at
Bachelor’s level in CSE and ECE in year 1991 with a well-planned educational programme,
similar to that of IITs and RECs/NITs for providing engineering education in the Kumaon
Region. College prepared a master plan and project report for development in different fields in
the year 1996, which was approved by BOG. At present, the Institute offers seven graduate
engineering programmes i.e., Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and
Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering and Biochemical Engineering and two postgraduate programmes i.e.,
Masters of Computer Applications (M.C.A) and Master of Technology (M. Tech) in CSE, ECE
and ME departments. Besides this, Institute has also started Ph. D. programme in the year 2017.
The Institute has several other infrastructural facilities for faculty and students, such as hostels,
staff residential campus, departmental buildings, students’ activity club and a multipurpose hall.
Conducive Environment is provided for learning and over-all personality development of the
students is being created. Emphasis is being given on self-discipline and mutual respect.
The Institute has been granted autonomy status by UGC in 2012. The courses of the Institute are
affiliated to Uttrakhand Technical University, Dehardun. The Institute has World Bank funded
Government of India Project on Technical Education Quality Improvement Program TEQIP-II
and recently is selected in TEQIP-III.
The Institute has well established laboratory facilities, departmental library, Smart Class rooms,
auditorium, open theatre, stadium, indoor-outdoor sport’s facilities and other well established
central facilities like CCFC, workshop, central library etc. It offers a congenial environment for
teaching and research with over 25 years of experience and achievements in the field of technical
education. BTKIT has established itself as an Institute of total commitment to the quality and an
excellence in academic pursuits.

Message from Director
Technical Education is the most potential instrument for development of society. The Institute was
established in the year 1986 and first batch of Institute came into existence in the year 1991 with
two disciplines namely, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Computer Science and
Engineering for imparting engineering education and promoting all the sectors of technological
development in Uttarakhand mainly in Kumaon Region. Bipin Tripathi Kumaon Institute of
Technology (BTKIT), formerly known as Kumaon Engineering College,is a leading and premium
institution devoted to imparting quality engineering education for development in Kumaon region.
A team of highly qualified faculty, dedicated staff and good placement are the major strength of the
Institute. Presently, the institute offers Bachelor’s Degree in seven disciplines of Engineering
namely Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering, Bio-Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering &
Chemical Engineering and three P.G. Courses Digital Communication (ECE), Thermal Engineering
(ME) and Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) and Master of Computer Applications.
In the fast changing global economic environment, BTKIT has strived to bring global perspective to
all its program and activities. The latest technologies are employed for effective delivery system by
employing different teaching methodologies, smart class rooms, teacher-student interactions and
the curriculum is regularly updated to cater the needs of the industries with emphasis on the lab
works. The Institute is committed to create an ambience for nurturing innovation, creativity and
excellence among the students. The Institute has well developed infrastructure and state-of-the-art
Centralized Computing Facility Centre (CCFC) and modernized labs from TEQIP project.
University Grant Commission has granted academic autonomy status to this Institute. For overall
development of students, various events are organized by student based bodies mainly Spardha,
Sintilla and various Techfest throughout the year.

Affiliating University
The Uttarakhand Technical University, Dehradun was established on 27th January 2005 by Govt.
of Uttarakhand through the Uttarakhand Technical University Act 2005. The Uttarakhand
Technical University campus is situated at NH-72 Suddhowala, Dehradun.
The University has been established in an area of 8.372 hectare and it is the only affiliating
University of the state for technical institutions. There are 8 Constituent and 132 affiliated
colleges with 33,000 students in various courses.
The University imparts education in Graduate, Post Graduate and Doctorate programmes in
various disciplines like Management, Engineering, Hotel Management, Computer Application,
Pharmacy etc.The University is serving the technical education through its progress monitored
each semester, part time Ph.Dprogramme especially designed for the teachers and scientists by
giving them opportunity to explore the untouched area of the research. The University in its own
campus running M.Tech and M.PharmaProgramme in various disciplines. Apart from this
University is having 8 Constituent Colleges. Spreading Technical Education in the remote
underprivileged area of Uttarakhand hills.

Scholarships data
1. Merit Scholarships Following norms are prevailing in the College for the award of
Merit Scholarship
• This scholarship is given to 10% of students admitted.
• Rs. 3000/- will be paid per year
• The scholarship will be awarded for B.TechIst year on the basis of marks obtained in Ist
Semester. The B.TechIInd, IIIrd&IVth year students are awarded scholarship on the merit
basis.
• There is no Income limit of guardians for this scholarship
• Any student is not entitled to get two scholarships at a time. The students have to choose
one scholarship if more than one is awarded.
2. SC, ST and OBC Scholarships Eligible Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe and Backward
Class Students are given Scholarships by Samaj Kalyan Vibhag, Uttarakhand. These are given as
per rules fixed by Samaj Kalyan Vibhag, Uttarakhand.
3. National Scholarship National Scholarships are awarded by the Central Government through
Uttarakhand Shiksha Nideshalaya, Haldwanion the basis of student’s past performance.

Central Facilities and Amenities
1. Central Library
The central library of the Institute serves as the academic heart of the Institute to support
teaching programmes, research activities, and extension services. Over the recent years the
libraries have undergone dramatic changes due to influence of information technology, the
libraries are now more focused towards providing access to information/ learning resources
rather than just being custodians of books. Advances in IT have revolutionized research,
education and ways for communicating research information. These factors demand that library
evolve to address these changes while preserving their fundamental goal.
The central library of BTKIT located at centrally and provides library services to the
students, faculty and staff members of the institute with the following mission: To enhance
knowledge and instil a thirst for reading which will enable the readers to develop an integrated
personality and motivate them to make a valuable contribution to the society in future.

1. SECTIONS OF THE LIBRARY:
Acquisition:This Section is responsible for the acquisition of all books, monographs, government
documents, gifts and other reading material relevant to the requirements of teaching, research
and extension programs of the institute. This section helps the faculty members in selecting the
new documents for procurement in the library by sending the latest announcements, publisher’s
catalogues and bibliographies.
Periodicals: This section acquires periodicals through subscription, exchange and gifts.
Technical Processing: All the reading material received from acquisition and periodicals sections
is technically processed by this section for its use.
Circulation: This section enrolls students, academic and administrative staff as members of the
Library and manages issue and return of books and periodicals.
Reading Section:Havingmore than 100 students sitting capacity available in the reading section
of the library.

The in-charge of library deals with the provision and maintenance of information,
including books, electronic resources, magazines, newspaper, and web based content & digital
resources.

Central Computing Facility Centre of Bipin Tripathi Kumaon Institute of Technology Dwarahat
established in 2011 is catering computational requirements and providing 24x7 Internet facilities
with Email services to the users of the institute at campus as well as residential area of BTKIT
along with its role of central facilitator of computing facilities to students and faculty member
who are intensely engaged in research activities. There are numerous labs like CISCO Lab,
Oracle Lab, Microsoft Lab, Open Source Lab, Communication lab etc.

3. HEALTH CENTRE
To provide basic health care facilities to the Students Teaching Staff, Non-teaching Staff,
Supporting Staff, of the on 24X7 basis. It provides adequate and proper medical advice to all the
patients. The students also can get medical aid from nearby Community Health Centre.
Emergency medical services are also being provided to patients during odd hours & on holidays.
Critical cases are being referred to Higher Centers by Ambulance, after providing primary
treatment.

The Training and Placement cell is headed by a senior member having through knowledge of
industries and industrial requirement who groom the student to make their presence felt in the
visiting companies. The cell is worked in close coordination with student placement
committee consisting of members chosen from the entire department. The training and

The Chemical Engineering Department was established in 2010 with an intake of 60 students.
The department includes all important aspects of Chemical Engineering & lays emphasis to
facilitate students to improve their practical knowledge in different subjects.The Chemical
Engineering Department is in its developing phase and offers the B. Tech. program. It gives an
elaborate description of all the unit operations & processes used in chemical engineering.The
department has started distinct laboratories and academic programs related to courses like Unit
Operations (Heat transfer, Mass transfer and Fluid mechanics), Control in Chemical Industries,
Processes (Inorganic and Organic) and Technologies (Renewable, Corrosion etc.).The courses
comprise of Fluid Mechanics, Heat & Mass Transfer, Thermodynamics, Process Control and
Instrumentation, Process Design and Project Engineering, Chemical Reaction Engineering etc.
the various electives offered are optimization techniques, petrochemicals etc. to let students be
aware of present on going changes in technologies and Industries.
The department has witnessed a big rise in the size of vibrant student body. In today’s scenario
all the efforts are made towards making it first choice of aspiring undergraduates. This is being

Department of Computer Science & Engineering
The Computer Science & Engineering Department was established in 1991with an intake of 20
seats. And Increase in intake strength from 20 to 30 in year 1992, further increase in seats from
30 to 60 in year 1998. The department has highly experienced faculties that trains student in
different software and hardware. The department is accredited by NBA-AICTE in 2010.The
department also run Master program i.e. in Master of Computer Application from 2001 with an
intake 40 seats and increase in seats from 40 to60 in year 2010. The students have to take 36
courses along with the personnel and inter-personal effectiveness lab and industry training during
the sixth semester. The department of MCA is devoted for quality learning through learning. The
department also provides Specialization in Master of Technology Computer Science Engineering
from 2010 with an intake of 18 students. Admission in M. Tech Program is through valid GATE
score. The department offers Ph.D program also.

Civil Engineering Department
The Civil Engineering Department was established in 2009 offering B. Tech. undergraduate
courses with an intake of 30 students. With the growing demand in the market a need was felt to
increase the seats up to 60 in 2010. Every year it manages to produce technically sound bright
engineers to shape the globe with their desires. The department has pledged to install the wings
of growth to real estate by producing the yellow headed professionals promising to lay the
foundation with mortar of change. The department has kept the pace with latest technologies and
undoubtedly faculty has left no stone unturned to impart the ultimate knowledge to young
genius. The students are feed with software as well as practical Designing and Analysis to help
them learn more efficiently.
The program emphasizes on industry standard and research based projects, which would enhance
the skills of students to become successful professionals for a holistic development.

Under research lab various equipment’s are available to conduct different experiments related to
application in materials testing, soil testing etc. Various available equipment’s include vacuum
oven, PEM fuel cell hardware, Magnetic stirrer, high temperature and pressure reactor, Vacuum
Filtration Assembly, Laboratory Hydraulic Hot Press with temp. Controller, Polarizing
Microscope etc.

Semi-Automatic Compression Testing Equipment,
Electrically Cum Manually Operated equipment
and more.
Flexure Testing Machine These machines are designed to test the flexural
strength of concrete beams. Their design provides
maximum rigidity throughout their working range as the downward movement of the piston applies
load. A spacer is provided for testing different size
of beams and load is indicated on a digital
indicator.
Concrete Permeability Apparatus Permeability apparatus is used for determining the permeability of cement mortar and concrete
specimens of 15cm cubes cast in the laboratory
Automatic Soil Compactor The Automatic Soil Compactor is designed to
compact specimens automatically and uniformly, assuring conformity with local and international
standards. It is appropriate for compaction testing
and preparing samples for CBR testing.

The Electrical Engineering Department was established in the year 2010.The annual Intake is 65.
A team of qualified faculty and ample experience is the highlight of the department.
The objective of the B.Tech/B.E graduate program in Electrical Engineering is to provide the
students good understanding of Electrical engineering solutions in a global, societal and
environmental context, consistent with the principles of sustainable development. The course

The Electronics & Communication Engineering Department was established with the foundation
of the college in the year of 1986.The annual Intake at present is 65. A team of qualified faculty
and ample experience is the highlight of the department.
The objective of the B.Tech/B.E graduate program in Electronics & Communication Engineering
is to provide the students good understanding of Electronics & Communication engineering
solutions in a global, societal and environmental context, consistent with the principles of
sustainable development. The course will make the students capable Identifying, formulating and
solving electronics engineering problems that meet specified performance, cost, time, safety and
other quality needs and objectives with professional and ethical responsibility.
The program emphasis on industry standard and research based projects, which would enhance

Mechanical Engineering Department
The Mechanical Engineering Department came into its existence in 1998 with admission to
impart knowledge, both theoretical and practical, so as to enable the students to take on industrial
challenges and served as catering department to other disciplines. The department started
offering undergraduate program leading to four year Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree
(affiliated with Kumaon University, Nainital) in Mechanical Engineering in the year 1998. The
first batch was started with an intake of 30 students which has now been enhanced to 60 students
from the session 2010-2011. Presently, the department is offering B. Tech. and M. Tech
programs (affiliated with Uttarakhand Technical University, Dehradun). Emphasis is being laid
on taking up innovative research and quality education. The department is advancing towards the
frontiers in the field of Mechanical Engineering. Department encompasses expertise in Solid
Mechanics and Engineering Design, Fluid and Thermal Sciences and Manufacturing Processes
and Systems. The department modernizes its various laboratories with the induction of the state-
of art equipment time to time.

Spardha and Sintilla
Spardha is an inter institute sports fest which is hosted by the Institute annually. It provides an
opportunity to all the students of various branches to compete and showcase their talent in
various sports like Football, Cricket, Chess, Badminton, Table Tennis, and Volleyball etc.
Sintilla is an intra-institute culture fest which is hosted by the Institute annually. It provides a
platform for students overall development. Various events like dancing, singing, face painting,
rangoli, and photography etc., organized by Central Organizing Committee comprise of
students from various branches.
Professional Activities
Each branch of engineering has a forum to provide platform to every studentfor exposition of
his/her professional talent. The activities of each forum aregoverned by an Executive Body
elected by the students under the supervisionof a Faculty Advisor nominated by the concerned
Head of Department.Debates, Group Discussions, I.Q. Tests, Quizzes, Literary Activities, Short
Tours,Professional/Inspirational Talks by eminent persons etc. are arranged by theForum. In
addition, Branch/Students Chapters of prominent ProfessionalBodies, such as IEEE, Computer
Society of India, Indian Society for TechnicalEducation and the Institution of Engineers (India)

In the curriculum of each year there is a provision of marks for the General Proficiency. These
marks are awarded on the basis of general performance\ behavior/discipline and participation in
different of Student Activities.
NCC
Our institute has opted for NCC on voluntary basis as it provide grooming to the college students
and inculcate in them the feeling of patriotism and discipline, since the motto of NCC is
“UNITY ANDDISCIPLINE”. Earlier NCC was joined by students for 2 years but now as per the
changes it is now for a duration of 3 years, where they are certified for A, B and C.The students
admitted in this NCC training are given preference over normal candidates during selections
based on the achievements in the corps after completion of their training period. The army unit
under which our institute is accommodated for NCC is 77 UK BATTALION.
NSS
Central theme of NSS is to impress upon students and to enhance their social responsibility. The
students are trained not only totreat their period of study as one of the opportunities for
indulgence in intellectual luxury but also to prepare themselves for final dedication in the service
of those who provided the sinews of the nation with the national goods and service essential to
