Experience a living history of the Chinese people in Bendigo from the goldrush of the 1850s to the present day at the Golden Dragon Museum. Victoria’s first accredited museum.

In the 1890s an impressive Imperial dragon known as Loong was purchased from China by the local Chinese. He is now the oldest Imperial Chinese dragon in the world and is housed at the museum for viewing.

The museum beautifully presents processional regalia, carved furniture and costumes embroidered with gold bullion thread. Artifacts date as far back as the Shang Dynasty 1600-1046BC.

Located at the entrance to the museum and part of the Chinese precinct of Bendigo, are the Yi Yuan gardens, the Kuan Yin temple and the new Dai Gum San forecourt.

Gold was first discovered in the Bendigo Creek in 1851 and sparked one of the world’s most exciting gold rushes, with more gold found here between 1850 and 1900 than anywhere else in the world. The city is literally built on gold, gathered from the rich gold-bearing quartz reefs.

This year marks 100 years since the death

of acclaimed architect William Charles Vahland.

As part of this year’s The National Trust’s annual Heritage Festival, Bendigo will celebrate Vahland’s excellent architectural achievements and his lasting contribution to Bendigo and civic life.

The Bendigo Town Hall, The Capital, Bendigo Health’s Anne Caudle Centre and iconic landmark the Alexandra Fountain were all designed by Vahland.

Vahland, a German migrant, nurtured the idea of the great Australian dream. He built a number of homes called ‘Vahland Villas’ and assisted with developing a building society to loan money to people to help them move out of tents and work towards owning their own home. Today, that loan scheme is better known as the Bendigo Bank.

Across Bendigo there will be open houses, talks, tours and activities commemorating the Vahland legacy.

The theme of the 2015 National Trust Heritage Festival is ‘Conflict and Compassion’ and will run from April 18 to May 26. The month of April will focus on the ANZAC Centenary and Vahland will be celebrated during May.

Ulumbarra Theatre

Ulumbarra Theatre is an historic building repurposed to provide state-of-the-art venues for all styles of events and is set behind the walls of the infamous Sandhurst Gaol.

Set to open in April 2015, it is located right in the heart of Bendigo and will host international performing artists, national conferences and celebrations.

Ulumbarra, meaning gather together or meeting place in the language of the Dja Dja Wurrung people.

Bendigo Art Gallery

Bendigo Art Gallery was recently extended increasing its exhibition space by a third making it the largest regional gallery in Australia.

The new wing includes six exhibition spaces, a loading dock and underground storage to house the gallery’s five thousand artworks.

The modern architecturally designed extension superbly contrasts its historic façade.

Bendigo has recently undergone an arts infrastructure boom including a gallery expansion and a gaol transformed into a 1,000 seat theatre

A Bendigo Art Gallery Foundation exhibition 28 March - 28 June 2015

Imagining Ned will explore the history and legend surrounding the charisma of the Kelly gang through original artefacts; such as Kelly’s famous armour, letters, weaponry, associated ephemera and other historic items.

The exhibition will feature a selection of Sidney Nolan’s important works alongside those of other artists such as Arthur Boyd, Juan Davila and Norman Lindsay. Literary references will also be explored in the exhibition including significant works by Peter Carey amongst others.

In May 2015 a new Australian musical based on the life of the notorious outlaw, Ned Kelly will have its world premiere at Ulumbarra Theatre. “Ned” will be a musical theatre production retelling the story of Ned Kelly. Composed by Adam Lyon, the star of King Kong, and co-written by Marc McIntyre and Anna Lyon.

This musical theatre production reflects the story’s core ideals of social justice, national pride and the beating heart of revolution. NED embodies this spirit and will translate a legend into a live experience for a modern day audience who craves excitement and engagement.

Ned’s journey is represented theatrically and musically to create empathy for the plight of the underdog and the frisson associated with living on the wrong side of the law.

The following all day car parks which are on the outer perimeter of the CBD are $2.60 per day or 60c per hour: Tom Flood Sports Centre, Queen Elizabeth Oval and McLaren Street. The multi-storey carpark in Hargreaves St (CBD) is $1.40 an hour, or $6.70 all day. The Edwards St multi-storey carpark (CBD) is free for the first 90 minutes then $1.50 per hour or $7.20 per day. There are no parking fees in Greater Bendigo on the weekend but time restrictions still apply so you need to check the signage near where you park.

The world’s largest gold nugget, the Welcome Stranger, was unearthed in the Central Goldfields. Today, fortune-hunters still flock to Dunolly’s historic gold detecting supplies store. In Maryborough the famous railway station is now an antiques emporium. The town’s art gallery hosts a top quality exhibition program and there’s many great country pubs to choose from.

V/line trains from Melbourne travel to the Bendigo CBD multiple times a day and the local bus service leaves from the station, connecting you to all the best attractions.
