missionI am delighted to report to you on our continuing success of meeting our mission to inspire,
empower, and enhance the lives of so many special children and families that we serve at The
Center for Courageous Kids. With your compassionate support, CCK continues to provide help,
hope, and answers for children with disabilities and special needs, and their families. We are
inspired by the life-changing outcomes of our family retreats and summer camps. The impact our
programs offer children, families, and our community will have long lasting effects, way beyond
the gates of The Center for Courageous Kids. Although we are providing the opportunity and
expertise, the children we serve leave camp and return home with personal growth, independence,
confidence, and triumphs.
As you will read in the following pages, our volunteers, healthcare partners, donors, and programs
have again excelled at meeting the needs of our courageous campers. In 2017, The Center for
Courageous Kids served thousands of children and their families. Our newly implemented Tract
Programs for older campers were hugely successful in promoting independence and self-efficacy.
As 2017 closes and 2018 begins, I reflect on our
10 years filled with laughter, joy and friendship
that only a trip to CCK can provide and I am
humbled. True to our mission, each year we
are given the opportunity to inspire, empower
and enhance the lives of the bravest children
and families we know. The campers we serve
know exactly what CCK means in their lives
and their testimonies are our inspiration.
It is my privilege to ensure the mission of The
Center for Courageous Kids continues to offer
these life-changing experiences to children
living with serious illnesses.
With a grateful heart,
WE MAKE IT OUR INSTILLING INSPIRATION AND EMPOWERMENT WHILE ENHANCING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN WITH SERIOUS ILLNESSES.

on the roadFor the first time, the CCK program
staff loaded up the van and traveled
down the road to The Kidz Club
in Bowling Green, a nurse-staffed
medical daycare facility for children
with special needs. While at the
facility, CCK staff played with the
kids, did arts and crafts, and provided
a memorable camp-like experience
right there in the comfort of their
own classrooms.
In addition to the Kidz Club
partnership, CCK brought their
brand of inclusive recreational
camping to the La Casita Center in
Louisville, Kentucky. This first time
collaborative effort allowed for new
barriers to be overcome, linking the
Louisville Latino community with The
Center’s penchant for programming
designed to be accessible to all
participants. La Casita Center
upholds their mission to enhance
the well-being of Louisville’s Latino
community through education,
empowerment, advocacy, and
wellness. The center hosted CCK and
assisted with translating the day’s
activities, which included arts/crafts,
carnival games and a dance party, to
its community members that allowed
La Casita to bring a feeling of camp
to their population, many of whom
do not experience recreational
camping opportunities.
We look forward to continuing
the existing partnerships that were
made in 2017, while developing
new relationships in 2018 with
organizations in the region.
CCK TAKES THE CAMP EXPERIENCE
LOTS OF FUN PACKED INTO ONE DAY FORautism families
CCK hosted its third Autism
Family Fun Day, in-which families
with children along the autism
spectrum received the opportunity
to attend CCK for an entire
Saturday to enjoy many family
activities. We are continuing to
look for more diverse ways to
use our facility to serve various
populations and missions, and
providing day camp experiences
is an effort we hope to continue
and grow. Through the support
of our sponsors, The Kelly Autism
Program and Autism Tennessee,
the day was made possible.
Looking forward, CCK plans to
work diligently to ensure that
we continue to lead the charge
in inspiring, empowering and
enhancing the lives of our families
and campers.

welcomed J.M.
Smucker Company – Scottsville
KY and Glasgow First United
Methodist Church for the 2017
United Way Day of Caring. The
volunteers worked tirelessly to help
keep CCK looking great and ready
for our final camp of the summer!
We had volunteers cleaning our
fences, canoes and courtyard
posts, making beds, cleaning out
the fire pit and unloading hay for
our horses. A huge thanks goes
out to all of the employees who
were so generous with their time,
and for serving and caring for our
Courageous Kids.
UNITED WAYDay of Caring
CCK relies heavily on dedicated
individuals and groups to volunteer
their talents and efforts to fulfill
our mission. We know first-hand
the importance of volunteerism,
so as a team, we traveled beyond
our white gates and rolled up our
sleeves to make a difference in the
lives of people and furry friends in
our community. CCK staff visited
area nonprofits such as the Bowling
Green-Warren County Humane
Society, Hotel Inc., and Hope
House to assist with socializing
animals; organizing donations for
distribution to families; and assisting
with winter repair
needs. It was a day of
service that not only
helped others, but
filled our hearts
with the spirit
of giving
back.

CCK LAUNCHES THE INAUGURAL
Pathfinder ProgramThis year CCK introduced the
Pathfinder Program to its summer
season. The Pathfinder Program
was designed to provide valuable
employment opportunities to
young adults living with autism,
while also providing workshops
designed to foster a deeper
understanding of professional
development and workplace
values. In its inaugural season, six
participants were indoctrinated
into the program, providing
valuable contributions in our
administration, food service,
programming, and facilities
departments. When not gaining
valuable workplace experience,
Pathfinder participants experienced
workshops that allowed them
to gain an understanding of best
practices in the professional arena.
Upon completion of the season,
Pathfinders were able to successfully
develop their own professional
documentation, practice
establishing appropriate rapport
with peers, and become ingrained
in positive workplace behaviors.

The Annual Allen County-Scottsville
Christmas parade was given a little
shot of CCK energy this year! CCK
staff decorated a float and traveled
through the streets of Scottsville…and
yes, Cubby and Ollie came too! With
holiday music emanating from the
float, CCK Staff tossing LOTS of candy,
the parade attendees were definitely
treated to Christmas spirit CCK style!
CCK harnessed the power
of digital media to raise
awareness and support for
our mission by embracing
the #GivingTuesday
movement for the second
year. Following Thanksgiving
and Black Friday,
#GivingTuesday serves as a
global day for philanthropy.
In 2017 advocates for CCK
tapped into their social
networks to share our mission
and welcomed 100 supporters
who collectively raised over
$30,000 during this powerful
24-hour period.
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS, MUSIC, CANDY, AND KIDS…
This year the CCK staff organized
a camp-wide food drive for the
True Gospel Church to assist in
their efforts to feed low income
families in the Allen County area.
There are hundreds of families
that are serviced through the True
Gospel Church Food Pantry and
food donation drives are what
allow them to keep feeding the
needy here in the rural areas of our
community.
EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS…
tuesdayGIVING
In October, The Center for
Courageous Kids converged at
BMI in Nashville for CCK’s first
signature event, Our Song is
Life. The event brought together
over 100 CCK supporters from
across the region and top music
executives in the Nashville Music
Industry to raise money for the
development of our Music Therapy
Program and Music Center. CCK
supporter, Ronnie Dunn, who was
on the road for a show, greeted
guests via video. Attendees
enjoyed a rooftop reception,
followed by musical performances
by newly-signed BMI affiliates, The
Bass Brothers, five-time Grammy
nominee LynnMarie, accompanied
by hit producer and writer Steve
Ivey, and Rebecca Simmons, a CCK
camper and ambassador.
The Music Therapy Program will
be a vital addition to the existing
recreational therapeutic programs

CCK offers. It is our firm belief
that music therapy provides
the children we serve and their
families with tools and resources
that they can apply well beyond
their time spent at camp. Music
therapy builds up a child’s self-
esteem and feeds their spirit.
The Center for Courageous Kids Page 15
Country Music songwriters and
performers Natalie Hemby and Eric
Paslay visited camp with BMI VP,
Jody Williams to write songs and
embrace the good drug of music
with our campers this summer. Eric,
a Type I Diabetic himself, used this
platform to speak to the children in
attendance at our summer Diabetes
Camp about what music has meant
in his life. Just as the love for CCK
in the Nashville music industry is
growing, the evolution of music at
CCK and its benefits for our campers
continues to blossom and develop
into very powerful tools for the
children we serve.
CAMPERS GOT A TASTE OF country music
In the spirit of our mission to
inspire, empower, and enhance
the lives of the children we
serve at CCK, we are continually
seeking ways to make the camp
experience truly life changing for
our campers. In addition to our
traditional camp programming,
CCK launched a Music Therapy
Program at camp this summer.
The power of music is undeniable.
Board certified Music Therapist,
Adam Summers partnered with
CCK to bring this powerful
programming addition to summer
camp this year. Music Therapy
provides our campers with the
ability to explore their feelings,
express themselves, and even put
words and sound to the feelings
and emotions they may not be
able to describe.
HEALING THROUGH THE POWER OF music
Page 16 The Center for Courageous Kids
CCK relies heavily on the time and
support of our volunteers. Every
year, we have amazing corporations
who partner with CCK to fill a
variety of needs and to offer
their employees the opportunity
to give back to their community.
Team members from Blue Cotton,
Jennings Perry and Schmitt, Service
One and Van Meter Insurance
helped throughout the summer
with our CCK Carnivals, meal
services, and equestrian program.
• UPS - A long standing community
partner with CCK, UPS continues to
work hard to serve CCK. UPS Team
members from the Louisville Metro
region came to the rescue for CCK
with a major facilities enhancement
project. Our friends at UPS help
spread over 60,000 pounds of
rubber mulch across camp for
beautification and to improve areas
of accessibility for our campers!

support for CCK while also building
team morale and engagement
opportunities. The employees of
Therma-Tru Doors invited regional
CCK Camper families to join them
for the company picnic to celebrate
the support they are showing all
our children and families. The
overwhelming support Therma-Tru
Doors showed CCK this year is a
true blessing.
• M&L Electrical - Located just a few
short miles down the road from
CCK, the team at M&L Electrical
answers the call when a need arises
at camp. From bringing equipment
out to help stain and seal the
hardwood in our riding arena,
along with social media advocacy,

gathered at CCK to help our
team complete a wide variety of
projects around camp. Near and
far we now have new advocates
and ambassadors for our mission
thanks to the generosity of the
KirkpatrickPrice team.
• Therma-Tru - No one tells the
CCK story better, than our Camper
Parents. This was the case with
Therma-Tru. Our relationship
with this outstanding corporation
started with a CCK Camper Dad
sharing his family’s experience
at camp with his co-workers
at Therma-Tru. The entire
corporation was so inspired,
thus leading them to adopt CCK
as their philanthropy for 2017.

Collectively since 2012, the Houchens Mobile program has raised over $180,000. It’s a vital program that we are so thankful to be a part of. We want to send our sincere thanks to Houchens Industries for continuing to support The Center for Courageous Kids. A HUGE thank you also goes out to Gerald Printing for once again donating their print services and ZebraGraphics for designing our mobile materials. It is

WKU FOOTBALL TEAM GETS MESSY FOR KIDS! This summer, CCK Campers teamed up with the Western Kentucky University Football Team…not for a football game, but a MESSY GAME! As everyone knows, Messy Games is a staple event during summer, and this year, the campers had more muscle on their Messy Games Team with the players in their corners, all painted up and ready for on-field spaghetti throwing action.
This fall, the Annual Country Ham Breakfast, hosted by the Halfway Lodge, once again did not disappoint. The Halfway Lodge members fired up the cooker and brewed the coffee ALL for CCK. Guests were treated to country ham, biscuits, and all the fixin’s. The Halfway Lodge began this fundraiser before CCK broke ground, and 10 years later, they are still raising money for us. To date, they have raised over $10,000. We could not thank the lodge enough for their dedicated and ongoing support.
DID SOMEONE SAY country ham and biscui ts?
KENTUCKY HEADHUNTERS SUPPORT CCK Kentucky Legends were Rock‘n & Rollin’ for CCK this year! Grammy Award Winners, Kentucky Headhunters embraced the mission of CCK, thus leading them to select The Center for Courageous Kids as the beneficiary of their Halloween Bash Concert that was held in the fall. The Kentucky natives, who are now legends in the US and beyond put on a great show and are now life-long friends of CCK. We couldn’t thank them enough for making CCK a part of their tour, and using their talents to benefit the amazing children who attend CCK.

benefiting The Center for
Courageous Kids had a great
day on September 14th where
14 restaurants participated by
donating 10% of sales to CCK
throughout the day! Lots of
calories were consumed that day,
but as we say….it’s all for the kids.
The 2017 Courageous Kids 6K Run Sponsored by Edmonton State Bank was a huge success, raising over $30,000 and welcoming over 200 runners, walkers, and camper families! CCK would like to thank the people who came out to participate and our generous sponsors for making the day a GREAT one! Mark your calendars for May 19th, 2018 for the Fourth Annual CCK 6K Run & Fun Walk at Covington Woods!

2017 SUMMER STAFF
Page 26 The Center for Courageous Kids
at Centre Collegevolunteered their time as den
counselors since 2014 and then
decided to take things a step
further by making The Center
for Courageous Kids their local
philanthropy. Now they not only
volunteer their time at camp,
but also raise money for CCK
throughout the year.
From events like their
See-Saw-A-Thon and
their Kapparoni and
Cheese late night
macaroni and cheese
bar, they have raised over $6,000
for the kids of CCK. They also
held letter writing campaigns
to spread the message of CCK
and attain donations. The ladies
of Kappa Kappa Gamma- Zeta
Gamma Chapter have influenced
CCK through their hard work and
their commitment to service. On
behalf of the staff, families, and
kids of CCK thank you for your
unending support.
KAPPA KAPPA GAMMAMany of our volunteers and
volunteer groups play vital
roles for CCK such as donors,
fundraisers, advocates, and
spokespersons. One such group
does all of these and that is the
Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority’s
Zeta Gamma Chapter at Centre
College. The ladies of KKG have
LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BONNER PROGRAMVOLUNTEERED 5,000 HOURSThe Center for Courageous Kids
could not be the place that
it is for our kids and families
without the help of our more
than 800 volunteers each year.
An important component of our
volunteer program here at CCK is
our college students. During family
retreats and summer camp, our
college students are the people
who our kids spend the most
time with and our families rely
on. They serve as den counselors
and program leaders, assisting
kids through camp activities and
helping with day to day needs.
They are the face of CCK to many
of our campers and a majority of
those faces come from the Bonner
Program at Lindsey Wilson College.
The Bonner Program is a national
service organization encompassing
65 universities and colleges and
over 3,000 college students. The
Bonner Program encourages
students to service learning and
community involvement. LWC
Bonner Scholars make up many of
the familiar faces our kids come
to know as den counselors at
our weekend family retreats and
even some of our summer staff
members. In 2017, LWC Bonner
Scholars volunteered over 5,000
hours of their time to CCK. In
the past few years, the Bonner
Program from Lindsey Wilson
College has become the backbone
of the volunteer program and
we thank them for their constant
commitment and dedication to the
children of CCK.

The partnership between Seton
Hill University and CCK began
in the summer of 2013 with
one student, Katie Gammon,
volunteering for a summer
session. She returned to SHU
and spread the word for CCK to
other students in the Physician’s
Assistant program. In the five
years since, Seton Hill has
sent over 60 volunteers for
summer sessions, many of them
volunteering for multiple sessions
and returning for multiple years.
In addition to volunteering,
Seton Hill students, such as Hallie
Gilbert and Dylan Everett, have
served as Summer Staff Members.
With ambassadors like Hallie and
Dylan, the support from Seton Hill
has grown into fundraising efforts
as well. Each year, students cook
and sell soup on campus and in
the community to help send more
kids to camp each year. In 2017,
SHU students raised over $2,500
for CCK. Seton Hill University may
be three states and eight hours
away, but the support given from
their students and faculty makes
it seem right around the corner
from CCK.

FOR CCK
Some of our most cherished
volunteers have interesting
starts at CCK. In the fall of 2017,
Louis Corral came to camp as
a volunteer wanting to fulfill
practicum hours for his degree
at Lindsey Wilson College. He
signed up for the three weekends
he needed to fulfill his hours and
showed up on the first weekend
of camp. After spending one
weekend at CCK, he became a
constant at camp for the rest of
the fall season. He volunteered
anytime he was asked and ended
the season as the only volunteer
at every Family Retreat. Louis
is the first to hold a door open
and is always willing to do what
is needed to make a child’s day,
whether it be playing ball in the
courtyard or painting his hair
blue. Volunteers like Louis, truly
embody what CCK is all about.
They come to camp and see
the children in a setting like no
other. Louis, we thank you for
your enthusiasm, willingness, and
constant support of CCK.
LOUIS CORRAL Volunteer of the Year
CCK appreciation is spreading on
University of Cincinnati’s campus.
In 2017, seven different students
groups from UC came to volunteer
at CCK resulting in over 2,000
volunteer hours. With student
leaders such as Acadia Jarzynski
and Leah Wolfer, coming to CCK
and taking their enthusiasm
and love for camp back to their
classrooms in Cincinnati, we have
seen an influx of UC students. As
these students share their camp
stories and encourage younger
students to volunteer at CCK, the
relationship between the University
of Cincinnati and CCK will flourish.
