Wildcat Creek Walk of Excellence Located in Kokomo, Indiana
Taking several years to complete, the dedication of the Walk of Excellence was held on October 27, 2008 and completed a 3.4 mile paved urban trail from East to West and connecting several parks as well as Kokomo’s Historical Downtown. Phase I of the Walk is between Miller-Highland Park and Fire Station #1. Phase 2 is between Fire Station #1 and Water-works Park. Phase 3 is between Miller-Highland Park and just north of the intersection of Markland Ave. & Park Ave. There is also a loop not shown on the map above that crosses the Wildcat Creek in Foster Park and circles Kokomo Beach. The Wildcat Creek Walk of Excellence is ideal for walking, hiking, running, bicycling or even roller blading. Overall it is comfortably wide, smoother and maintains an almost unnoticeable grade.
There is also a good mixture of open areas and tree canopied areas. The trail located in several parks, runs alongside and in places cross-ing over, the Wildcat Creek. The landscape surrounding the trail not only looks beauti-ful, but has the unmistakable fresh smell of the Indiana countryside. No matter how many times you visit the trail, there is always something new for you to find from day to day and season to season.
Information Kiosk located behind Fire Station #1 in Downtown Kokomo.

Features include the Wildcat Creek, Miller-Highland Park, a walk bridge and trail spur to Kokomo Beach Family Aquatic Center, World War II military tank in Foster Park, Kokomo Senior Citizens Center, Historical Downtown Kokomo, Future Park, Pioneer Cemetery, Crown Point Cemetery and Water-works Park. The trail in Foster Park hugs the scenic Wildcat Creek. As you explore the woodlands and wetlands along Wildcat Creek in Foster Park you can see a variety of plant and ani-mal life. Visitors to Wildcat Creek can expect to observe a variety of wildlife. Great blue herons, green herons, wood ducks, mallards, barred and great horned owls, redheaded
woodpeckers, Baltimore orioles, red-tailed hawks, kestrels and turkey vultures can be seen in the area. Mammals found along Wildcat Creek include fox, badger, beaver, mink, deer, woodchuck, muskrat, raccoon and nu-merous smaller species. Several varieties of bass, catfish, panfish and other game and “rough” fish are found in the Wildcat waters. Another point of interest is the Chief Kokomo Monument, which is the source of the community’s name. The burial
p lace o f Chie f Kokomo is located in Pioneer Cemetery on the 400 block of Pur-dum Street. The cenotaph was built by the Grand Army Re-publican in 1911.
Well cared for, the Wildcat Creek Walk of Excellence is one of the nicest looking trails in central Indi-ana. The amazing sights, sounds and scents the trail pro-vides makes it much more than just a great place to visit, it’s an experience.

Jackson Morrow Park offers 100 acres of open spaces, wood-land, a 1.3 mile paved walkpath, playground, sheltered picnic ar-eas, collegiate basketball court, sand volleyball courts, and a sled-ding hill. The park is also home to the Kokomo Pipeline Skate-park, a world-class facility for advanced skaters and BMX bike riders. Created in 1991, the park is named for Jackson Morrow (1849-1930), a distinguished early resident of Howard County whose public service included schoolmaster at Alto, surveyor, civil engi-neer, and Kokomo Police Commissioner. The Morrow family farm included the current park land.
The Kirkendall Interpretive Center has a large diorama of preserved animals native to How-ard County, live animal exhibits, displays about natural resources, a bird watching area, and more. Examples of special programs include Hunter’s Education Class, Fly Tying Classes, Haunted Trail Walk, Environmental Workshops and the Super Explorers summer camp. Retha Kirkendall (1906-1991) was the granddaughter of Jackson Morrow for whom the park is named. Mrs. Kirkendall and her husband, Delmas (1907-2005), pro-vided generous donations to the Indi-ana Department of Natural Resources as well as the Kokomo Parks & Rec-reation Department, which enabled the City of Kokomo to build the nature center. Completed in the summer of 1997, the building is named in honor of Mrs. Kirkendall.

Begun in 1938 by Obert Miller and his sons, Kelly and Dory, the Al G. Kelly Miller Brothers Circus, now known simply as Kelly Miller, has entertained millions of American and Canadian citizens while establishing itself in the fabric and history of the American Tented Circus.
From 1984 through 2006, David Rawls, president and third generation circus performer directed Kelly-Miller Circus. In 2007, another exciting chapter in its history began when he passed the reins to John Ringling North II. Mr. North’s great uncles were the famous Ringling Brothers, his grandmother, their only sister. Born into this most famous of circus families, John grew up on the “Greatest Show on Earth”, learning circus operation from his father Henry Ringling North, and Uncle John Ringling North. “I intend to maintain the excellent standards established by David Rawls and his family, and add some new features to the show”, John said following the hand-over.
The show travels on a fleet of 25 vehicles and requires an area of some 90,000 square feet to set up on. The circus big top, imported from Italy, has a seating capacity of 1500 and is made of waterproof vinyl. The tent is 120' by 130' and 40’ high and is supported by more than a quarter of a mile of heavy gauge aluminum tubing as well as several miles of rope, steel cable and chain.
The Kelly Miller Circus has gathered a galaxy of stars from many nations, as well as an exotic display of animals, enhanced them with beautiful theatrical lighting and lively circus music for a performance to warm the hearts of young and old alike.
From the early morning hours, when the elephants pull the big top into the air to the very moment when the king pole races to the ground at the end of the day, you the public are invited to come and be a part of the magic of "Circus Day" as it has been experienced for over 200 years!
We look forward to seeing you when the Kelly-Miller Circus visits your town.

THE HISTORY OF
HIGHLAND PARK (and it's many historical sites)

HIGHLAND PARK The first suggestion for a city park was made during the 1870’s. An ideal location considered was the triangular shaped area just northeast of the city that had been the location of Camp Stilwell during the Civil War which then was a pleasant grove with a spring in the center that was the scene of many picnics and fam-ily gatherings. However, the City Council took no action on the matter and so Kokomo continued without a park. The next sug-gestion for a park location was more successful as Mayor Thorne, following a promise that a street car line would be ex-tended to the purchase site obtained from George and Mary Gwinn, 15 acres of a wild wooded piece of ground through which Kokomo Creek flowed, April 2, 1892 for $1,500.
The Kokomo Street Railway Company was only a few months old at that time following new ownership and new management which had taken over a very poor and run-down system. At the time of the land purchase, it had a line between the Panhandle station on North Main and Markland, with a branch on East Syca-more and Ohio to the Diamond Plate Glass Company.
There have been at least two playgrounds in the park. The first was established around 1910 and included a merry-go-round, several swings and two slides. It was located at the left of the Park Road exit. Many can remember the miniature train for chil-dren that ran around a short track just to the left after one crossed the main entrance bridge.
Rodgers Pavilion is the oldest structure in the park. It was built by the street railway company for the convenience of passengers attending the Great Exposition or visiting in the park. Originally, it was open on the sides with about eight or ten long wooden seats. Street cars ran along the north side and a broad cement platform separated the track from the building. Following the last street car run in 1931, the structure stood empty and was used for storage for several years until finally about 1958 it was en-closed and improvements made to the interior. At first it was known simply as “the shelter house” and then changed to it’s pre-sent name “the Rodgers Pavilion” after a former Park Superinten-dent and it has been rented out to groups for meetings of various kinds since that time.
ATHLETIC PARK Land for the new park which adjoins Highland Park on the east was purchased by the newly formed Kokomo Street Railway Company in the 1890’s, and a large exhibition hall was built to serve a variety of groups over the years. It was part of an 80 acre farm that formerly belonged to M.M. Trabue. One of the first was the annual Chatau-qua meeting which featured lectures, classes and entertainment for people in the area, thus it was known as Chatauqua Park for a time. Back in June of 1912, Lincoln Beachey, noted aviator, arrived in Kokomo in his Curtiss biplane to give demonstrations and rides to anyone brave enough to try it. He and another Curtiss Co. flier W.H. Hemtrought, landed at Athletic Park and caused a sensation as few people here had ever seen any demonstrations. In fact, the crowds were so large, extra street cars had to be used to handle them. Most of the stores in the city closed so their employees could attend. Beachey was a daring flier who was said to be the first to loop an aeroplane. It was quite an exciting event in the history of Kokomo. The Chamber of Commerce leased the grounds for the first Great Industrial Exposition here in 1914. The large exhibition hall was used to exhibit handcraft and art objects and another building was erected and called the Transportation and Machinery Hall for show-ing large objects such as automobiles and farm machinery. A third building was built just inside the main entrance to the Park (now called Exposition Park) for local merchants to exhibit their wares and services. This building was a long narrow affair that housed the booths of more than 150 merchants said to represent more than 80% of the total in the city. Smaller structures also were added in-cluding a baseball clubhouse and ticket office. Later the utility gave up ownership following the final Expo in 1923 and donated it to the city when again it was called Athletic Park. It has been the scene of many athletic events mostly baseball but the American Legion football team used it during the 1920’s. Among the teams that have played here were the Kokomo Giants, Kokomo Dodgers and the Kokomo Highlanders. Some of the players who made names for themselves later in the major leagues were Or-lando Cepeda, Tommy Davis and Ed Palmquist. The American Le-gion World Series was held here a few years back.
THE PARK ZOO Yes, Kokomo once had a zoo, but most people don’t remember it as it has been gone these many years. It was located in the northwest part of the park and probably dated from about 1908. At one time it had cages for at least three bears, one of which was donated by T.C. McReynolds, manager of the city’s utilities. Most likely these were brown bears. Also there were cages for several small mammals such as raccoons, deer, foxes and sev-eral kinds of birds which were in a large cage separate from the others and which housed an eagle, owls and swans. Also sepa-rate from the rest was an alligator pit surrounded by a tall iron fence and covered with screening. This zoo was described as one of the park’s more remarkable attractions. It was the victim of the Great Depression of the 1930’s as the Park Department de-cided it could no longer afford to feed it’s inmates and they were disposed of thus ending the attraction. The bear dens can still be seen cut in the hill next to the site.
LOG CABIN At one time many years ago there was a small log cabin in the park, but when it was built and it’s original purpose are uncertain. However, for years it was used as a meeting place for local Boy Scout troops, club gatherings, camping and picnics. It seems that it was set afire and destroyed by a gang supposedly cele-brating VJ Day in 1945. All that is left is a picture of it. It is pos-sible it was destroyed by the same gang that also wrecked the cannon.
TOURIST CAMP You don’t hear much about tourist camps these days as they dis-appeared many years ago but during the teens and 20’s they were a great convenience for touring motorists. In those days, road travel was rather primitive compared to today’s accommo-dations. Travelers then could pitch a tent in a farm yard, stay overnight in a tourist resident or at a hotel, which many people did. Just about every town established a tourist camp, and Kokomo was no exception. The date was about 1920 when Henry Balcom, well-known nurs-eryman and landscape architect, was employed to lay out this camp which was located close to the Well House in the park op-posite the dam and the bridge for the road that led up to the Country Club. His nursery was located where the Harris Bank branch now stands on West Jefferson. In his plan there were spaces for 29 tents with a surrounding strip for parking cars. A graveled street and walks were included in the plan along with grills for cooking. For some reason this camp was called the “Tin Can Camp”. How long it was used is uncer-tain, but since it was not on a well-travelled highway it probably was not heavily used as about the only way tourists could know about it was by use of the tourist guides of the time. To this day, this layout remains somewhat of a mystery.
OLD BEN Old Ben may not be the best-known character in Kokomo’s his-tory, but he is easily in the Top Ten. Everyone who has lived here for any length of time knows about him; and during World War II his fame spread to all parts of the world by word and by picture. He set a record for size that has stood to this day. Of course, we are referring to the preserved figure of the gigantic steer that stands in the Highland Park pavilion.
His story began in 1902 on the farm of Mike and John Murphy about half way between Bunker Hill and Miami near what is known as Haggerty’s crossing. He was the off-spring of a pure bred registered Hereford bull and an ordinary shorthorn cow. Ben was a prodigy from the very beginning as he weighed 125 pounds at birth. It was said he had to rest on his knees to nurse when he was less than a week old. He gained about 100 pounds a month, and at 20 months he weighed one ton, reaching two tons at the age of 4 years in 1906. By then he had become quite a celebrity, his owners exhibited him at many fairs and festivals. The Nickel Plate R.R. even ran a spur line to the Murphy farm just to help Ben in his travels. He was never fed a special diet, but was pastured with the other cattle on the Miami County farm where many visitors were al-ways welcome to watch him on his home ground. Many side-show and circus owners tried to buy him, but the Murphy’s turned them all down, preferring to show him themselves in a private tent at fairs all over Indiana and at the State Fair for many years.
Finally there came a day in February, 1910, when Ben, then in his prime of life, slipped on some ice and fell heavily, breaking his leg. With understandable reluctance, the Murphy’s called in a vet from Marion and had him shot. With today’s improved veteri-nary science, it is possible that Old Ben might have been saved. Who knows? I have seen two different figures on the animal’s weight at the time of his passing; one is 4,585 and the other 4,720 pounds. At either weight he was big. He was 6 and 1/2 feet tall at the shoulder, 14 feet around and 16 and 1/4 feet from his nose to the tip of his tail. What happened after a bullet put an end to Old Ben’s career? Well, his hide was sent to a taxidermist in New York where it was expertly stuffed and mounted for posterity. The Murphy brothers continued to display their famous steer on their farm until they sold it in 1919. A Peru grocer bargained for the beef of the car-cass and thought he could capitalize on his fame; however, many citizens of Peru threatened to boycott his store if he went through with such a scheme, so the grocer’s plan was cancelled. The beef then was shipped hurriedly by rail to Indianapolis for conversion into frankfurters. Some say the stuffed form was do-nated to the City of Firsts in 1919, other accounts state that it was bought and paid for at a price of $300.00, crooked horn and all. At any event he has been an object of wonder here ever since. He is housed in the Visitor’s Center in Highland Park. Even Ripley featured him in his “Believe It or Not” back in 1968. During WWII picture postcards of a girl named Phyllis Hartzell (now Mrs. Max Talbert of Marion) with arms out-stretched and standing in front of the famous steer were printed from a photo by Maurice Tull in 1943 and mailed to service men around the globe. Where are these cards today? Have you seen one lately?
CIVIL WAR CANNON Until recently few people were aware that a Civil War cannon still exists in Kokomo; and even fewer know how long it has been here. Some can remember when it still had it’s wooden wheels and stood just beyond the entrance bridge to the left as you en-tered City Park (now Highland). A picture of it there taken about 1910 is the earliest information about it that we have. Later it was mounted in the western part of the park without it’s wheels or carriage; and during the 1920’s and early 1930’s it was in Foster Park, and then disappeared into storage. It was briefly in Mehlig Park before being moved to the miniature golf course at the Seashore municipal swimming pool where it was mounted (barrel only) on a wooden base. Since no markings or touch hole are visible it probably was mounted upside down.
It is uncertain what type of cannon this is; some say it is a 12 pound Napoleon (the type most commonly used during the war) while others think it might be a Parrott. It is even suggested it might be a Howitzer, but this is unlikely. Dahgrens were very similar, but were not widely used. Recently, according to a local resident who once lived near the park, it was stated that in the early 1940’s the cannon was shoved into Kokomo Creek one Halloween. Since the above information was compiled, further investigation reveals that this is a 12 pound Howitzer that we currently have in possession of the Parks Department as of the year 2008.
UPDATE: The fate of the 6 pounder Parrott cannon that formerly stood in Highland Park is still unknown. We know that it was a Civil War piece, and that probably the local GAR originally obtained. We also know that it stood in two different places in the park. It seems likely that it was melted down for one of the war efforts. Several theories have been put forward as to it’s location includ-ing the one that states it was buried on the island in Kokomo Creek which seems very unlikely. The 12 pounder Howitzer that used to be located at the Sea-shore Pool area is one of two obtained by Orlando A. Somers (probably from a government surplus depot in St. Louis) following the Civil War in which he served; and was elected National Com-mander of the GAR in 1917. It is believed both were in his front yard just west of Somers Park for a time. One was said to have been stolen, according to one, while another said it was loaned to an out of town restorer but never returned. The other one was placed in Highland Park near the Park Road entrance. Crider stated he helped to restore it and that he and others used to fire it using a pound of black powder for each shot and tin cans filled with cement used for “projectiles”. He has identified it as the one that used to be mounted in the miniature golf course at the pool.
The “Kokomo Cannon” has recently been restored and will be on display in Highland Park
at the Visitor’s Center in the Spring of 2008.
UPDATE 2008: The “Kokomo Cannon” has been in Kokomo since shortly after it was donated to the Thomas J. Harrison Post # 30 of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) by Congress on August 8, 1882. There were two cannons, both 12 pound bronze field Howitzers, donated at this time. Only this one remains. There was also a 3 inch Ordinance cannon in Highland (City) Park for many years. It appears on several postcards of the day. Sadly, it also no longer exists. The cannons were to honor and memorialize the Civil War Veterans. In the not too distant past, this cannon spent many years at the Seashore Municipal Pool on a miniature golf course. Today this cannon stands as a symbol of the honor to all Kokomo Veterans; may we never forget them.
The cannon received a new gun carriage from funds raised from Kokomo’s Orlando A. Somer’s Camp 1 of the Sons of Union Vet-eran’s of the Civil War. 12 pound Confederate bronze Howitzer Foundry: Leeds and Company-New Orleans Foundry #: 48 Years Made: 1862 Weight of Barrel: 775 lbs. Powder Charge: 1 pound Range at 5 degrees elevation: 1,072 yards Leeds made a total of 49 cannons for the South. Nine of these were 12 pound bronze Howitzers. Of the nine, only three are known to exist. The other two cannons are in the National Park Service. New Orleans surrendered on May 1, 1862 putting Leeds out of business.
VERMONT COVERED BRIDGE Kokomo, which bills itself as the city of firsts, has an Indiana last. The bright red covered bridge in Highland Park has the final remain-ing Smith Type #3 Trusses in Indiana. The Vermont Covered Bridge is a transplant from the town of the same name, which is about 5 miles east of Kokomo. In between entries for “road viewers” and “pauper’s coffins’ in Howard County commissioners records, the early history of the Vermont Covered Bridge unfolds. Official action began on August 11, 1875 when the Howard County Board of Com-missioners let bids for two bridge projects; one at the town of Ver-mont and the other near Stonebraker’s Mill, about 10 miles west of Kokomo. On October 5, 1875, the commissioners accepted the bid from the Smith Bridge Company of Toledo, Ohio for the Vermont Bridge and a local contractor for the other bridge. The Smith Bridge Company’s bid of $991.62 was for a “Smith Patent Wooden Bridge” with a “High Double Truss”.
The completed 95-foot clear span, which engineers at the time esti-mated would sustain a rolling weight of 5,600 pounds per lineal foot, was accepted by the commissioners January 5, 1876 at the same time as Stonebraker Bridge. The contract did not include the stone abutments or hauling materials from the Kokomo depot to the town of Vermont - about $1,000 - which was paid for by local residents. According to the January 8, 1876, Kokomo Saturday Tribune; “The contractors, anxious to have their bridge introduced in this part of Indiana, have done a most excellent job, one that gives satisfaction to all who have seen it, as well as the commissioners. It is very symmetrical, has beautiful approaches and looks about as well as a well-finished house.” The article also states that the cost of first-class wooden bridges was about three-fifths that of iron structures at the time. The Stonebraker Bridge was removed after the 1913 flood severely damaged its abutments.
When the Vermont Bridge was built, the Old Strawtown Pike, the oldest road in Howard County, was moved slightly to cross the new bridge. And although the only visible remains of the town of Vermont is a grain elevator, it wasn’t always this way. After surviving floods, at least one arson attempt and a reckless coal delivery driver, the Vermont Covered Bridge was threatened by another prominent covered bridge destroyer: progress. In 1957, plans for the new Kokomo Reservoir called for flooding the valley at the bridge site. The old wooden bridge was to be re-placed with a wider and longer concrete span, built on higher ground.
The late M.E. White, then president of the Howard County His-torical Society, proposed moving the span to one of Kokomo’s parks. It is mostly through his efforts that the bridge has been preserved. White coordinated public meetings, fund raising ef-forts, volunteer work, the search for the bridges new location and accepted bids to move the bridge. The original low bid to move the bridge intact from the town of Vermont to its new home in Highland park was about $10,000. September 2, 1957 arrived and still no work had been started. The Society made an agreement with Homer Hollinger of 1236 N. Webster to dismantle the bridge, numbering each piece for reassembly in Highland Park, with the consent of the Kokomo Park Board at a cost of about $3,000. He began work immedi-ately and by September 21 only the framework remained to be taken apart. The job continued until January 1958, when work was completed, YMCA members agreed to raise the remaining $1,500 needed to pay for the project.
Tragedy almost struck while the bridge was waiting for enough funds to be raised for its move; it was set on fire. Thanks to an alert passer-by and the quick action of the Greentown Volunteer Fire Department, the bridge was saved with only minor damage. According to the July 30, 1957 Kokomo Tribune, “An arsonist, apparently disgruntled over efforts to save the bridge for histori-cal purposes, touched a torch to kerosene sprinkled over the ag-ing span and then fled to scene.” The bridge was closed to traffic following the fire. The total cost of moving the bridge was under $3,500. The Kokomo Parks Department constructed the new abutments for the covered bridge. Because of rotten wood, one end of the bridge had to be extensively repaired. This had an effect on the decision to not allow vehicular traffic on the bridge. The abut-ments were about 6 feet deep with no pilings put in them. It would be safe for foot traffic only. Although the Vermont Bridge is Howard County’s only remaining covered bridge, it’s not the county’s only wooden bridge. The county has about 12 modern timber beam bridges that were built in the late 70s and early 80s. Like many wooden bridges before them, they are scheduled to be replaced. In January of 1992, through the Parks Department, the bridge received a new shake roof. The new roof’s price of about $6,000 is close to six times the cost of the entire bridge in 1875. The Park Department has a policy to keep the end gates locked to secure the bridge from vandalism. Groups can request admis-sion to the bridge, but it’s best to set up the visit ahead of time. When it’s appreciated, it’s appropriate. Flood waters in the park have reached the bottom of the bridge three or four times since it’s been in the park, but so far there has been no damage. There are no plans to raise the abutments.
ELWOOD HAYNES MUSEUM Elwood Haynes October 14, 1857 - April 13, 1925 For 35 years Elwood Haynes was a resident of Kokomo. The record of those years was one of fine achievement for himself and for this community. As the builder of America’s first commer-cially successful gasoline automobile, he linked Kokomo’s name enduring with the motor vehicle industry: as the inventor of Stel-lite alloy and stainless steel, he gave the mechanical world two rustless materials of inestimable value. In the hearts of his fellow townsmen, however, Mr. Haynes was enshrined as a Christian gentleman, a designation thoroughly deserved and universally accorded him. The museum and property were donated to the City of Kokomo by Bernice Haynes Hillis and family on October 14, 1965.
Elwood Haynes was born of English ancestry in Portland, Indiana on October 14, 1857. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1881, where he discovered tungsten chrome steel. In 1884, he attended Johns Hopkins University for post graduate studies. He was the “Father of the Natural Gas Industry” in Indiana. In 1888, he invented the vapor thermostat. In 1890, he moved to Greentown, Indiana as the Superintendent of the Indiana Natural Gas Company.
Haynes conceived the idea of a “horseless carriage” while in Portland in 1891. He moved to Kokomo, completed the plans and hired Elmer and Edgar Apperson to build the first automobile in 1893.
After having discovered an alloy made of pure chromium and pure nickel, he began commercially producing automobiles under the Haynes Apperson logo in 1898. Haynes also discovered an alloy to make a durable spark plug electrode in 1899. It is from these alloys that Haynes Stellite Company was formed. In 1906, Haynes patented several cobalt-chromium alloys. This work led to patents being issued for cobalt-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloys, which he named Stellite. These cobalt-based alloys found immediate use as lathe tools in the First World War, tripling mathining production. Since that time, many new nickel and cobalt alloys have been invented and have found uses from prostetics to the Space Shut-tle, jet engines, nuclear power plants and submarines.

SYCAMORE STUMP
July 5, 1959 The stump is one of Howard County’s few remaining land-marks of the past. It sometimes comes as a surprise to local citi-zens to learn that the old relic did not grow at the site where it is now housed. The old tree originally stood in the west end of Howard County at a point about two miles due north of New London. Early residents point out its former location along the north bank of Wildcat Creek a short distance west of the New London Road. According to the
description of those who remember the tree, it was a hundred feet high before storms broke it down to a huge, hollow stump. The trunk was more than 50 feet in circumference and one of its lower branches was reported to be eight feet in diameter. News-paper accounts at the time the stump was removed to Highland Park reported that the tree was 1,500 years old! It was in June of 1916 that Jacob Bergman, administrator of the city’s parks, promoted the idea of bringing the stump of Indiana’s biggest tree to a city park where it could be preserved as a relic of the county’s pioneer period. Colonel Jim Milner undertook the unusual task of moving the old landmark and Henry and Ed Ort-man were hired to pull the 21-ton load with their 35-horsepower Rumley tractor engine.
The operation called for careful planning. While a concrete plat-form was being constructed “on the highest part of the city park”, a crew was dispatched to the stump’s site to prepare it for mov-ing day. Leon Milner, 1239 N. Lafountain St., who assisted his father with the project, recalls that the tree stood so close to the creek that the men assigned to the task of sawing off the stump had to stand in water several inches deep. Sawing off the stump was accomplished by hoisting a man to the top of the 15 foot high snag and lowering him into the huge hollow. Then a small hole was knocked through the side, a crosscut saw inserted, and the shell was quickly cut through at the water’s edge. The stump was moved onto the moving trucks in readiness for the trip to Kokomo. Many local residents recall the excitement of Sunday, June 18, 1916, the date set for the excursion to Highland Park. A front page news story of the project in the Kokomo Tribune the day before had given appropriate publicity to the event, and many spectators gathered on the hill above the creek on the “Tid” Harrel farm. Milner recalls that cars and carriages parked in dis-order off Sycamore Road occasioned some difficulty in maneu-vering the old landmark out of the little valley where it had stood for centuries. The project was not accomplished without its “moments”. Wit-nesses remember that excitement ran high when a huge chain between the Ortman engine and the movers’ trucks snapped just as the heavy pull up the bluff out of the bottomland oats field was getting under way. However, since the trucks’ wheels were be-ing chocked as progress was being made, there was no mishap at this point. The chain was “doubled up” and progress contin-ued. Although the project had been planned to take only Sunday, since part of the route was scheduled to be torn up the next day for repairs, it soon became evident that most of the trip would be completed on Monday. The stump was so large it almost entirely blocked the road. Because of the size, a route had to be planned with no obstruction to the stump’s width or height.
The route outlined by Jacob Bergman to the Tribune was to bring the stump in on the Jefferson Street Pike to the first road west of “the new boulevard” then south to the Sycamore Road which would be taken east to the “Conwell” road, since the county Su-perintendent of Highways would not allow the traction engine on the new boulevard. At the Conwell Road the movers would go south, crossing Wildcat Creek at the Chaffin Bridge, a concrete arch bridge with no superstructure to interfere with the 15 foot high stump. At the Junction School, they were to turn east and enter the park by way of Alto Pike. Leon Milner states that as he recalls the route, they came directly east on Jefferson Street Road to the Wallace School corner, then south to Junction School and then into the park. The Tribune reported in 1916 that a brass plate was to be at-tached to the side of the Sycamore Stump telling something of its past, and that a door was to be cut in the trunk and a winding stairway constructed to the top where a roofed-in platform was to be installed. More than 40 years have passed since Colonel Jim Milner and the Ortman boys towed the fabulous stump into Highland Park. Some say that one time a long distance telephone was installed in the hollow which was large enough to assemble a dozen or more people. A shelter was constructed over the stump and dur-ing the 1930’s the shelter was enclosed and a WPA project in-stalled facilities for several small animals.
Thousands of visitors see Kokomo’s great stump each year and perhaps wonder if it is really as proclaimed, the “largest stump in Indiana”. Leon Milner who recalls the events of 1916 says many visitors from out of state were on hand that Sunday, ostensibly to dispute Kokomo’s claim, but he never heard them raise a ques-tion once they had looked over the stump. Who knows? This may be the largest Sycamore stump to be found anywhere! *** On the farm of Dorval and Gladys Hudson on West Sycamore Street Pike, north of New London. Fifty-seven feet in circumfer-ence. The lowest limb was 8 feet in diameter. 100 feet high. Estimated to be at least 800 years old. Some claims were that it was 1500 years old. Sycamore Stump now located in Highland Park completely under cover. Stood within 150 yards of cabin of Captain John Harrison where Governor Wright’s commission met in May of 1844 to select our county seat.

Kokomo has had many famous and col-orful industrialists, but by far the most famous of Kokomo’s industrial wizards was Elwood Haynes who was born of English ancestry in Portland, Indiana on October 14, 1857.
In 1923, the inventor built a new plant for his Haynes Automobile Company. Production rose to 40 cars per day. However, Mr. Haynes died two years later on April 13, 1925 at the age of 67. Elwood Haynes was a man of great success and achievement with consid-eration and respect for all people, greatly beloved by all who knew him. At the time of his death, all business in the City was suspended for the hour during his funeral.
www.CityofKokomo.org
Mr. Haynes moved to Kokomo in 1892. He drew a blueprint of the horseless carriage and took it to Elmer and Edgar Apperson (two Kokomo Machinists) and paid them 40 cents an hour to build it. On July 4, 1894, Mr. Haynes took his first ride in the gasoline powered horseless carriage.
Haynes and Apperson formed a corporation and built the Haynes Apperson Company (1898-1902). In 1902 they separated and each had their own company. Mr. Haynes’ first love was inventing alloys. In 1906, he invented a super alloy called Stellite. It is the hardest, most rust free alloy and has the highest melting temperature of any alloy known today. It is used in nuclear power plants, nuclear submarines, NASA missions, jet plane engines, dental and surgi-cal tools, lathing tools, etc… He invented stainless steel in 1912 which is probably today's most widely used rust free alloy.
Elwood Haynes received his education from Worcester Poly-technic Institute and Johns Hop-kins University. He was the man-ager of the Natural Gas Company when he invented the thermostat and a re-frigeration device which condensed the moisture out of natural gas and stopped gas line freeze. The waste product was gasoline.

Kokomo Dog Parks
Mehlig Dog Park—1701 W. Carter St.—Kokomo IN 46901
Mohr Dog Park—2302 Saratoga Ave.—Kokomo IN 46902
The Mehlig Dog Park was constructed in March of 2008 but its history goes much further back than that. In 2004, Pals for Paws
approached the Kokomo Parks & Recreation Department with the idea for this park and a
donation of $1,228. In 2006, the same group donated an additional $1,000 and the search for
an appropriate park began. In 2008, AAA Fence installed the fencing and the specialized
gates and also became an official sponsor of the Dog Park by donating the cost of everything
in excess of the original donation money that had been received from Pals for Paws. Two
new drinking fountains and a dog waste station were also installed in the park. Gail Beaton
made a donation to install a memorial park bench and Jefferson Road Animal Hospital be-
came a sponsor of the park by donating an additional dog waste station. Sponsorship oppor-
tunities are always available. In 2012, additional fencing was added which expanded the size
of the dog park and allowed for a special area for smaller dogs to play.
The Kokomo Dog Park was made possible significantly through sponsorships and donations
and is now a beautiful and frequented addition to our ever growing dog loving community.
The Mehlig Dog Park has met with such community success, that in 2010, the Parks and Recreation Department installed another
Dog Park in Mohr Park. These parks are on opposites sides of town and location alone benefits Kokomo and surrounding communi-
ties even more. The Mohr Dog Park also has small pieces of equipment for dog play and exercise.
