SCOUTING THE LEOPARDS — Lafayette welcomes back 10 letter winners from last season, including second-team All-Patriot League selection Vanessa Van De Venter. The junior forward led the Leopards in 2006-07 with 12.0 points per game. Last year, Lafayette fi nished sixth in the Patriot League standings and earned a No. 6 seed in the conference tournament, the team’s highest seeding under seventh-year head coach Tammy Smith. The Leopards opened its season on Monday, Nov. 12 with a hard-fought 65-64 victory over Monmouth. Cristin Zavocki led Lafayette with 14 points, while Van De Venter hit a layup with three seconds remaining in the contest to give Lafayette the victory.

THE LAST TIME VS. LAFAYETTE — Cornell ran into a hot-handed Lafayette squad that connected on over 50 percent of its shots from the fi eld to defeat the Big Red, 76-60 on Nov. 18, 2006. Jeomi Maduka had 12 points, fi ve rebounds and three steals, while Lauren Benson chipped in seven points and came up with three steals. Gretchen Gregg grabbed seven rebounds and Shannan Scarselletta handed out three assists. The Leopards had three players reach double-digits with Vanessa Van De Venter registering a game-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the fl oor and a 6-of-8 performance from the charity stripe. Van De Venter’s performance helped Lafayette to 53.2 percent shooting from the fi eld, with a 35.3 percent mark from 3-point range. Emily Garner pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds as the Leopards outrebounded the Big Red, 42-36.

CORNELL VS. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE — Cornell is 32-48 all-time vs. the current members of the Patriot League. The Big Red’s series with Lafayette is tied (7-7), but Cornell holds a losing mark against American (1-2), Army (5-6), Bucknell (3-13), Colgate (13-15), Lehigh (2-4) and Navy (0-2). Holy Cross is the only member of the Patriot League that Cornell has never faced in women’s basketball ... Coach Smith’s record vs. the conference improved to 7-9 last season when Cornell defeated Colgate, 64-59 ... Cornell will face three members of the Patriot League this season – Bucknell, Colgate and Lafayette.

PERFECTION – Senior Moïna Snyder went a perfect 5-for-5 from the fl oor and 2-of-2 from the free throw line in Cornell’s season opener at Long Island. Of the current members of the Big Red, only Jeomi Maduka has had a perfect shooting day from the fl oor, with at least fi ve attempts, doing it twice last season. Maduka went 7-for-7 vs. Columbia on Jan. 27 and 5-for-5 at Brown on Feb. 9. However, on both occasions, she faltered at the foul line, going 4-of-5 vs. the Lions and 7-of-9 vs. the Bears.

ON TARGET – Jeomi Maduka and Moïna Snyder fi nished last season ranked among the leaders in the Ivy League in fi eld goal percentage and the duo is off to a hot start this year. Maduka connected on 40 percent of her shots at Long Island, while Snyder was perfect, going 5-for-5 vs. the Blackbirds.

HELPING HAND – When sophomore Lauren Benson handed out eight assists vs. Long Island on Nov. 10, 2007, it marked the most assists in a single-game for a Cornell player since Lindsay Krasna dished out eight assists at Dartmouth on Jan. 29, 2005.

SWAT TEAM – Moïna Snyder fi nished the 2006-07 season with 36 blocked shots, putting her in a tie for fourth place with Kelly Jackson (1996-97) for blocks in a single-season. She opened the 2007-08 season with two blocks at Long Island, giving her 38 for her career and moving her within two blocks of moving into the career rankings for the Big Red.

MEETING MILESTONES – With her 11-point performance vs. Penn on Feb. 17, 2007, Jeomi Maduka surpassed the 600-point plateau. The junior forward needs just 41 rebounds to reach 400 for her career. Junior Kayleen Fitzsimmons needs 55 points to reach 500 career points.

GIMME THAT – Jeomi Maduka averaged 5.95 defensive rebounds and 7.9 rebounds per game last season, good for fi rst and fourth, respectively, in the 2006-07 fi nal conference rankings. She led the Big Red in rebounding it its fi rst game this season, grabbing eight caroms, including six defensive boards, at Long Island.

TAKE ME HOME, COUNTRY ROADS — When the Big Red travels to West Virginia to take on the Mountaineers on Sunday, Nov. 18, it will be a homecoming for two of Cornell’s players as junior Kayleen Fitzsimmons and freshman Emma Shalaway both hail from the Mountain State. It will also be the fi rst meeting between the two programs.

RACE TO 1,000 – Junior Jeomi Maduka is on pace to become the 11th player in Cornell women’s basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. She needs just 349 points (13.4 points per game) to reach the mark this season, which is in reach as she has averaged 14.6 ppg over her fi rst two years with the Big Red. At that rate, she would eclipse the mark in her 70th career game, faster than everyone other than Karen Walker ’91, the leading scorer in Cornell history, who scored her 1,000th point in her 65th career game.

ON THE FAST TRACK – While Jeomi Maduka has been one of the leading scorers and rebounders in the Ivy League over the past two seasons, she has had even more success in track and fi eld as she earned All-America honors last season after placing eighth in the long jump at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships. A two-time second-team All-Ivy selection for women’s basketball, Maduka is also a six-time Ivy League Heps champion and was named the Performer of the Meet at both the 2007 Indoor and the 2007 Outdoor Heps. She has helped Cornell to four straight indoor and outdoor track Heps team titles and her jump of 6.52-meters at NCAAs ranked among the top-100 in the world last year in the long jump.

PRESEASON PREDICTIONS — Cornell was selected to fi nish second overall in the Ivy League, according to the 2007-08 preseason Ivy League media poll. The second-place selection was the highest in program history. Harvard, the 2006-07 Ivy champion, was the run-away favorite to win the league title again this year with 127 points and all but one fi rst-place vote (15). Two points separated the next three teams as the Big Red and Princeton both garnered 94 points to tie for second-place, while Dartmouth, who came in second in 2006-07, was selected to fi nish in fourth-place with 92 points. Penn ranked a distant fi fth with 52 points, just edging out Yale, which secured 48 points. Columbia (38) and Brown (31) rounded out the bottom of the poll in seventh and eighth place, respectively.

FOR OPENERS – Cornell fell to 17-20 all-time in season openers when it dropped a 55-53 decision to Long Island on Nov. 10, 2007. Coach Dayna Smith has posted a 1-5 record in season openers, but a 3-2 record in home openers, during her time with the Big Red.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK – Cornell has added three newcomers to the team this season – Susie Doyle, Emma Shalaway and Sasha Truong.

FOUR-YEAR FOREIGNERS – Susie Doyle will have the opportunity to be the fi rst of her kind – a foreign student that uses all four years of her eligibility at Cornell. The Big Red has

had three foreigner in program history: Jumana Salti (Amman, Jordan), Sarah Lee (Deep River, Ontatio) and Moïna Snyder (Nice, Frace), but all three only played two years for Cornell.

HI, MY NAME IS – There is a new face on the sideline for the Big Red during the 2007-08 season as Faye Young-Miller joined head coach Dayna Smith’s coaching staff . Miller comes to Cornell with a long and distinguished history as a player, an offi cial, an ESPN commentator and a coach, and will be an invaluable asset for the Big Red program. The head coach at nearby Ithaca High School from 2002-2007, Miller helped the Little Red to a 54-46 (.540) record. She began her basketball coaching career with a two-season stint as the head coach at Manhattan College,

As Head Coach Dayna Smith begins her sixth season directing the women’s basketball program at Cornell, she fi nds in the enviable position of returning an upper-class laden team that will try to repeat it’s success from the previous season.

The Big Red fi nished the 2006-07 campaign with a 12-15 record, tied for the fourth most wins in program history, and the most ever under Smith. The team also boasted an 8-6 Ivy League record, tying the mark for the most conference wins by the women’s basketball program in a single season, and fi nished the year ranked third in the conference, its best Ivy League fi nish since the 2001-02 team tied for second place. Following the season, the forward tandem of Jeomi Maduka and Moina Snyder earned All-Ivy honors. Maduka became Cornell’s fi rst second-team All-Ivy selection since the 2003-04 season, while Snyder was an honorable mention selection.

The triumphs of last season came on the heels of an outstanding 2005-06 campaign in which the Big Red, after being selected to fi nish last in the conference’s preseason poll, exceeded all expectations by fi nishing the year with an 8-19 overall record and a 4-7 mark in the Ancient Eight, good for fi fth place in the league standings. Smith also developed Maduka into the Ivy League Rookie of the Year.

Smith, who is the seventh head women’s basketball coach at the University, led the Big Red in 2002-03 to its fi fth consecutive season with at least 10 wins. The squad fi nished with a 6-5 record at Newman Arena and had four conference victories. Smith also helped develop guard Karen Force into a fi rst-team All-Ivy player, the fi rst junior at Cornell to ever be named among the league’s elite group.

Prior to her time with the Big Red, Smith helped build programs at Rhode Island and Penn for a combined six seasons as an assistant coach before being named Cornell’s head coach on June 19, 2002. She became the fi rst Re-becca Quinn Morgan ’60 Head Coach of Women’s Basketball when the position was endowed in the fall of 2003.

One of the top young coaches in the country, Smith spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Penn, helping Cornell’s Ivy League rival to the 2000-01 league crown and a trip to the NCAA tournament, as well as a pair of regular season runner-up fi nishes. Smith had a hand in all aspects of the Quaker program, from scouting and recruiting to coordinating team travel and monitoring the academic progress of the squad.

In her three seasons at Penn, the Quakers posted a 52-31 overall record and a 31-11 Ivy League record, includ-ing an undefeated 14-0 conference slate in 2000-01. Smith was instrumental in recruiting one fi rst-team All-Ivy and two all-rookie players in her short tenure and assisted in the development of two-time Ivy Player of the Year Diana Caramanico, the conference’s all-time leading scorer (2,415 points). She also played a role in increasing community support for women’s games, initiating the “Penn Pals” program.

Before accepting the position at Penn, Smith held a similar position at her alma mater, Rhode Island. Smith spent three seasons as an assistant for the Rams, including a three-month stint as interim head coach during her fi nal season in Kingston. Her head coaching responsibility came at the age of 25, making her the youngest head coach ever at URI.

The native of Pittsburgh, Pa., quickly climbed the coaching ladder at URI after accepting a third assistant spot following her graduation in 1996. She was promoted the next spring, and a year later, became the program’s primary assistant. Her on-court responsibilities included working with the guards and coordinating the off ense. Away from the court, Smith was the Rams’ primary recruiter and maintained the travel and recruiting budgets.

Smith spent three summers as camp director at Rhode Island, facilitating a camp membership growth of 525 percent over a three-year span. She was also responsible for the hiring, training and supervising of more than 50 camp counselors while designing daily camp activities.

One of the top point guards in Atlantic 10 history, Smith helped lead the Rams to their fi rst NCAA tournament appearance in 1996, capping a season where URI also captured its fi rst A-10 East Division crown. A two-time fi rst team all-conference pick, Smith was one of only 11 players in Division I history to score more than 1,000 points and record 750 assists. She rewrote the Rhode Island record book, graduating as the program’s all-time assist and 3-point fi eld goal leader. She fi nished second in the nation in assists as a sophomore and ranked fourth as a junior. She ranks among the NCAA top 20 all-time in career assists (20th, 793) and assists per game (12th, 7.14).

A member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, Smith received her degree in business manage-ment from Rhode Island in May of 1996.
