MESSAGE FROM THE MAYORI am absolutely ecstatic toconfirm Council has beensuccessful in attracting DrDaniel Claughton and hiswife Monica to set up amedical practice in Kimba. They will reside in the councilhouse on West Terracerecently vacated by retired

CEO Daryl Cearns. In any new venture therewill be teething problems and unforeseencircumstances arise. I ask you all to showpatience and understanding and join withme in welcoming the Claughton's with openarms into our community. It will be simplysensational to see the Cr Leo SchaeferMemorial Health Centre building againbeing used for the purpose it was built andeven better to have a name to put on theforms from other health professionals under"name of your GP"!! Please remember howlucky we are to have a resident doctor andlets all welcome them to Kimba and showthem what a great decision they havemade in making Kimba their home!

The Federal Governments search for a siteto host a low to intermediate levelradioactive waste repository continues. TheWorking for Kimba's Future group hasformed and is investigating options fornominating alternate sites from within ourdistrict. This groups objectives are obviouslyat odds with the No Radioactive Waste inKimba or SA group. It is Council's view thateveryone in our community has the right toform their own view on this significantproposal and council is neither stopping norforcing the issue. I urge all involved to becalm, show respect and be conciliatoryduring this Federal Government process. Iwant to be very clear that the motion fromCouncil's October meeting is to support theinvestigation to see if an alternate sitenomination could be successful to enterphase 2 of the process. Council has alwaysrequested further detail surroundingcommunity benefits available and theseanswers are only going to be provided if were-enter the process. This is not supportingthe facility being developed in Kimba butsimply supporting further investigations, as

has always been the case. Some from withinour community have suggested council areputting money ahead of people. This is anoutrageous accusation and is seeking toapportion blame from an extremelycomplex, difficult and emotional situation. Please remember whatever your personalviews, that there may be other opinions andwe all need to be open, honest and aboveall respectful, even if our views do not align. We don't all need to agree, but we must allget along.

Some further issues that Council has beeninvolved in since the last newsletter includegaining support from member for GilesEddie Hughes to have a Triple J radiotransmission installed for our district. This is anissue many of our youth have been seekingfor some time and council havecampaigned for such a facility. We have nocommitment as yet but intend to keeppressing for it to be provided and themember for Giles support is very muchappreciated.

We have had further meetings with ourneighbouring councils on resource sharingand general cooperation. We will continueto proactively investigate efficiencies thatcan benefit all of our communities.

Councillor Lienert and I attended a Nature'sPlay workshop in Port Lincoln and are keento hear from children and parents within ourcommunity if you think the conceptwarrants further investigation. In a welcomebreak from past practices the Natures Playconcept encourages children to take onsensible risk and challenges using naturalbush land, tree's and informal structureswithout fences in a throwback to how manypeople of my generation remember ourchildhoods.

Council also again partnered with our localRSL group to host a ceremony onRemembrance Day. Lest We Forget.

Our Tourism Committee has been veryactive and one of the projects we havebeen investigating is 'silo art'. As this is such asignificant project it has now been handedoff to a sub group, under the umbrella of

CO COUNCIL NEWSCheck out our website at: www.kimba.sa.gov.au

the Kimba Community Development Groupto investigate the project and potentiallyapply for grants and raise other funds asnecessary. I congratulate this group for theirpassion and commitment for investigatingan amazing opportunity.

Finally I would like to commend our AreaSchool and in particular the students fromthe Powerful Learners Program who met withCEO Deb Larwood and myself to presentthe incredibly detailed work they havecompleted under the program. Theconfidence, leadership and commitmentthey demonstrated during our meeting wasimpressive to see. I think there may be somefuture elected members to come from thisgroup!

It was a pleasure to finally present chequesto our successful community grantapplicants at our November meeting.Congratulations to the groups and thankyou all for the wonderful work you do asvolunteers for the various groups and clubs.Thank you!

PS: Don't forget to support our new doctorand his wife (Daniel and Monica)!

Next meeting is on Tuesday Dec 6th, 8pm at theKimba Gateway Hotel.

All Welcome. Inquiries or apologies toChair Heather Baldock or Secretary Jess Haywood

An exciting new program, “Ignite Kimba Arts Program,” has beenproposed for Kimba to attract more tourist attention to the area. The key feature of this program is hoped to be the painting of 5 ofthe Kimba concrete silo cells on the town facing side. This hasbecome quite a popular form of artwork and tourism in bothWestern Australia and Victoria in recent times. And Coonalpynwill soon be making a start on their silos. The ‘silo project’ was first discussed by the Council’s TourismCommittee which then approached the Kimba CommunityDevelopment Group to take the lead. The Development Group has formalised a Working Groupconsisting so far of Sue Woolford, Deb Larwood, GeorginaShirley, Maree Barford, Cecila Woolford and Heather Baldock.Other expertise and assistance will be brought on board asneeded. To date the Working Group has sought assistance from theDistrict Council of Kimba with funds and some in-kind support. The Group has had successful initial discussions with Viterrahierarchy and several grant opportunities have been followed up.Juddy Roller, a company that works in the area of large murals, including painting silos, has been asked to provide a quote onsourcing a suitable artist and some of the project managementwork. Once this is received the Working Group will have furtherdiscussions with Viterra and hopes to formalise a Memorandum ofUnderstanding (MOU). Viterra have already checked out theproposed cells for relevant ‘engineering’ aspects. If the quote and MOU are acceptable the Working Group will thenproceed with sourcing funds to support this rather expensiveproject with the art work being carried out in August to September2017.

This whole Arts Program will include the refreshment of the Muralat the Rec Reserve, proposed events such as a Fashions of theEra, a Long Lunch, some fundraising, and a month long artexhibition in the Town Hall culminating in the Kimba Art Prize thenight before the 90th Kimba Show. It is hoped that the silo artwork will be launched the same night. The community will have the opportunity to have a say in what ispainted on the silos through a couple of workshops planned forearly next year. Viterra have already advised that the paint workmust be in keeping with their Vision. The Working Group plans to fundraise through SupportersPackages of varying levels. Corporates and suppliers to variousbusinesses in Kimba will be targeted for the higher level amounts, however this does not preclude any locals who would like tocontribute at these levels. There are also levels of support verysuited to all members of the community to contribute. Thepackage will be launched next year however if you would like tosee our Supporter Packages prior to that please contact one ofthe previously mentioned Working Group members. There havealready been significant funds pledged. As this project is still in the very early stages there may well besome changes to these plans, or parts may not even go ahead.Viterra have made it clear that they do not want a whole heap ofsilos painted and so the Working Group has tried to move withsome speed as this is bound to be a project of interest to manyareas.

EXCITING NEW PROJECT PROPOSED FOR KIMBA‘Ignite Kimba Arts Program’

The Thing About Kimba – we all loveour community and our lifestyle otherwisewe would move on.

But to retain ‘the things about Kimba’ thatwe love we must have viable businesses.

If every local adult resident spent anadditional $20 per month in Kimba insteadof on-line or in another town it would meanan injection of an additional $180,000 + peryear into our local economy.

With Christmas on our doorstep there is nobetter time to put this into practice ANDbenefit from the Christmas Shop LocalCampaign.

Grey Nomads Give Long Hours to KimbaWith the start of warmer weather and silo work ourwonderful grey nomad volunteers have moved on.Over the last 3 months about 8 volunteers havecontributed approximately 1100 hours between them. All in return for meeting and mixing with the locals andlearning more about our community, and a powered siteat the Recreation Reserve.Nearly all of this work was put in at the Museum. Thestreet furniture also managed a facelift with a paint jobthanks to a grey nomad, Development Group volunteersand a Work for the Dole participant. This highlights what an incredibly valuable program this isto our community. And not only are they sharing theirskills and time, they are also spreading the word aboutwhat a great place Kimba is and our great program viatheir blogs and with others they encounter. So if you ever meet one of our grey nomad volunteersplease make them very welcome to our community. Theyare the ones hooked into power at the Rec Reserve.

More Improvements for the Kimba MuseumSince the Work for the Dole program commenced in late Aprilthe program has seen considerable work done at the Museumby the job seekers. It has also seen the funding of materialsand tools to undertake numerous projects.Recently program funds have been tapped into to replaceClancy’s shed door with an easy to manage roller door and therailway shed had been done up with a new tool backboard andpart of the floor has been paved. The storeroom floor hasbeen paved, new shelving installed and cages placed overwindows for security.Complete Personnel, who are contracted by the FederalGovernment to roll out the program on Eyre Peninsula, havenow agreed to allocate funds towards the workshop floorconcreting, lockable doors and electrical work. This will be ahuge boon to supervisor, Brenton O’Donahue, the job seekersand the museum volunteers in their restoration works.Over the last few weeks the crew has restored the old FieldMarshall tractor, Series 2 to its former glory. The next project the job seekers and volunteers are tackling isto build another shed. Brenton is very keen to welcomeanybody who has a few spare hours and some skills in thisarea to come along and give a hand and share their expertise.Give Brenton a call if you are interested in helping out.
