Welcome to Tampa and AWHONN’s 2018 Annual Convention! We’re so excited to be together, and to learn from our outstanding lineup of speak-ers and presenters.

As you attend educational sessions, speak with exhibitors, and meet up with new and long-time friends during this Convention, I’d like you to keep one thing in mind:

Black women incur the greatest risk of dying from pregnancy related causes and are four times more likely to die than white women. Creating Change: Moving Toward Social Justice Practice and Emancipatory NursingPaula N. Kagan, PhD, RN Associate Professor at DePaul University School of Nursing

This presentation provides a call to social justice action for those providing health care services to women. Taking an intersectional and critical approach, the idea of emancipatory nursing will be discussed as a process of changing nursing practice into praxis meaning pro-fessional practice that is intentionally aimed toward social justice goals for the betterment of people and society. An understanding of critical perspective frameworks that can be used to analyze women’s health contexts, situations, and experiences; and of emancipatory action that can create the change needed to solve the problems and challenges to fair, equitable, and safe women’s health will be provided. The presentation will engage nurses in reflection upon their own identity, power, privilege, and marginalization.

Guide to educational sessionsUnless otherwise indicated, attendance at the session is included in the price of convention registration.

• The Leadership Summit (SS) is held on Saturday, June 23. There is a separate fee for the Summit which includes break-fast, lunch and an afternoon snack.

• Pre-convention (PC) Workshops are concurrent sessions held Saturday, June 23 and Sunday morning, June 24 before the official opening of convention. There is an additional fee to attend, which includes a continental breakfast at morning workshops and beverages and snacks at afternoon workshops.

• General Sessions (GS) are one-hour keynote sessions and open to all registrants. Most general sessions include brief acknowledgements of members receiving awards for everything from extraordinary bedside nursing skills to excellence in writing, research and advocacy.

• Nursing Excellence Sessions (NE) are four concurrent 75-minute sessions held immediately after the Opening Ceremony that are designed to get your convention experi-ence off to a great start.

• Specialty Sessions are 60- or 90-minute presentations. These presentations offer attendees the opportunity to hear experts present the most current information on a variety of clinical, professional and research topics.

• Oral Paper Presentations are included during the concurrent sessions. These presentations will focus either on an Innovative Program, Original Research, Evidence-Based Practice Projects or Quality Improvement Projects.

• The Poster Room is an independent study of Innovative Program, Case Study, Evidence-Based Practice Projects, Quality Improvement Projects and Research Posters. Poster presenters will be available to discuss their work at specified times, or visit when it suits you and contact the presenter directly with questions.

• Symposia (S) are 75-minute sessions conducted by AWHONN staff, leaders of healthcare, or partners.

AWHONN CONTACT HOURSAt this time, the maximum CNE that can be earned while attending the 2018 pre-convention and convention education-al activities is 32.75 contact hours. This number includes CNE offered for poster review and attendance at optional, ticketed events. To obtain contact hours for a session, you must attend the entire session and complete an online evaluation.

AMERICAN COLLEGE OF NURSE MIDWIVES (ACNM) CONTACT HOURSAn application for continuing education credit will be filed with ACNM.

INTERNATIONAL BOARD OF LACTATION CONSULTANT EXAMINERS (IBLCE) CERPSAn application for IBLCE CERPs will be filed for appropriate sessions.

PHARMACOLOGY CONTENTAWHONN broadly defines pharmacology content as reference to the origin, nature, effects and uses of drugs. Sessions containing pharmacology content are desig-nated with Rx.

This pre-convention session will begin with an overview of preterm infant brain development as the basis for prioritizing family-centered developmental care as the foundation for caregiving decision-making. Every baby has a brain and providing care that optimizes brain development is important. Research evidence will be used to facilitate prioritization of individualized interventions to meet infant and family needs with the goal of supporting best outcomes. Implementation of targeted interventions will be discussed as well as strategies for overcoming barriers to integration.

PC3 - What’s New in Women’s Health: Advanced Knowledge for Advanced Practice 21

This session will explore the newest evi-dence associated with EBP in women’s health. We will examine very recent research, guideline changes, and clinical implications associated with two areas of great concern to women’s health nurse practitioners and certified nurse mid-wives: contraceptive/post-menopausal hormone therapy and endometriosis. In addition, using a case-based approach, we will evaluate the symptoms, diagnosis, and management of those patients who have vaginitis but it isn’t yeast, trich, or BV. Last, we will use advanced knowl-edge associated with hormonal physiol-ogy to manage the care of women with difficult-to-treat hormonal problems. Rx

The field of neonatology and nursing care changes as new evidence emerges. We will explore treatment of at-risk hypoglycemic neonates, including safe use of dex-trose gel, new therapeutic hypothermia studies, sepsis screening and the trend for decreased antibiotic use, special considerations for resuscitation and stabilization of ELBW babies, and CCHD screening and physical assessment to help differen-tiate between cardiac and other illnesses.
