President’s Letter

Welcome to Tampa and AWHONN’s 2018 Annual Convention! We’re so excited to be together, and to learn from our outstanding lineup of speak-ers and presenters.

As you attend educational sessions, speak with exhibitors, and meet up with new and long-time friends during this Convention, I’d like you to keep one thing in mind:

You are a leader.

To your patients. To your colleagues. To your families and to your communities. Nurses have been named the most trusted professionals for the past 17 consecutive years by the Gallup poll, and with that trust comes responsibility. Never forget that.

Whether you’re just beginning your nursing career or have been practicing for years, your leadership is critical to the future of healthcare, particularly for women and new-borns. We encourage you to continue to learn, to teach, to grow, and to advocate.

Enjoy your time here at the AWHONN Convention. Soak up all there is to learn, and share that knowledge with your colleagues here and at home in your organizations and communities. Encourage them to join us for the 2019 Convention!

Together, we will create a brighter and healthier future for women and newborns, and for the nurses who care for them.

Jennifer L. Doyle, MSN, WHNP-BC 2018 President, AWHONN Board of Directors

Maternal Mortality Panel: Research, Practice and AdvocacySue Gullo, RN, BSN, MS; Amanda Hill, CNM; State Representative Shawn Thierry Moderated by Monica McLemore, RN, MPH, PhD

The United States has the highest rate of maternal death in the developed world. Black women incur the greatest risk of dying from pregnancy related causes and are four times more likely to die than white women. This panel of experts will tackle the issues surrounding maternal mortality. The focus will be on research, practice and advocacy issues and ways we can contribute to improving outcomes.

Inhale Some Helium: It’s Time To Lighten UpJeff Doucette, DNP, RN, CENP, FACHE, NEA-BCVice President of the Magnet Recognition and Pathway to Excellence® Programs at the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)

Do you spend more time at work than at home? If you are like most, you do and you should love it! This session will be your permission slip to be a little more crazy and have some fun at work! Join us for this enlightening presentation…you won’t even need to take notes!

Maternal Health in Agenda 2030: The Role of Nurse Leaders Professor Sheila Dinotshe Tlou, PhD, RN, FAAN

This presentation will focus on sharing personal perspective and experiences in fulfilling the role of a nurse researcher and global nurse leader. The role of nurses in promoting sexual and reproductive health rights and Ending AIDS by 2030 will be used as an example of nursing engagement. AWHONN members, both long tenured nurses and those newer to the profession, will be inspired to use nursing leadership skills to implement Sustainable Development Goals, improve both client and educational outcomes as members of the global village we live in.

Creating Change: Moving Toward Social Justice Practice and Emancipatory NursingPaula N. Kagan, PhD, RN Associate Professor at DePaul University School of Nursing

This presentation provides a call to social justice action for those providing health care services to women. Taking an intersectional and critical approach, the idea of emancipatory nursing will be discussed as a process of changing nursing practice into praxis meaning pro-fessional practice that is intentionally aimed toward social justice goals for the betterment of people and society. An understanding of critical perspective frameworks that can be used to analyze women’s health contexts, situations, and experiences; and of emancipatory action that can create the change needed to solve the problems and challenges to fair, equitable, and safe women’s health will be provided. The presentation will engage nurses in reflection upon their own identity, power, privilege, and marginalization.

EPre-Convention Schedule SATURDAY, JUNE 23

8 am – 3:45 pm (6.25 contact hours, registration is limited; additional fee required)

SS18 - The AWHONN Leadership Summit 14-15

8 am – 12 pm (3.75 contact hours, registration is limited; additional fee required)

PC1 - A Case Study Approach to Intrapartum Fetal Monitoring 18-19

This interactive presentation will utilize case studies to illustrate maternal and fetal oxygen transport, the effect of uter-ine activity on the fetal heart rate and how the fetus responds to hypoxemia. This will enable the nurse to implement the most effective and evidence-based interventions that meet the standard of care and promote patient safety. Rx

Susan Drummond, RN, MSN, C-EFM

PC2 - Prioritizing Family- Centered Developmental Care in your Practice: What Is the Evidence? 20

This pre-convention session will begin with an overview of preterm infant brain development as the basis for prioritizing family-centered developmental care as the foundation for caregiving decision-making. Every baby has a brain and providing care that optimizes brain development is important. Research evidence will be used to facilitate prioritization of individualized interventions to meet infant and family needs with the goal of supporting best outcomes. Implementation of targeted interventions will be discussed as well as strategies for overcoming barriers to integration.

Jacqueline M. McGrath, PhD, RN, FNAP, FAAN

PC3 - What’s New in Women’s Health: Advanced Knowledge for Advanced Practice 21

This session will explore the newest evi-dence associated with EBP in women’s health. We will examine very recent research, guideline changes, and clinical implications associated with two areas of great concern to women’s health nurse practitioners and certified nurse mid-wives: contraceptive/post-menopausal hormone therapy and endometriosis. In addition, using a case-based approach, we will evaluate the symptoms, diagnosis, and management of those patients who have vaginitis but it isn’t yeast, trich, or BV. Last, we will use advanced knowl-edge associated with hormonal physiol-ogy to manage the care of women with difficult-to-treat hormonal problems. Rx

Marianne H. Hutti, PhD, WHNP-BC, FAANP

1 – 5 pm (3.75 contact hours, registration is limited; additional fee required)

PC5 - State of the Evidence - Update on Neonatal Stabilization Care 20

The field of neonatology and nursing care changes as new evidence emerges. We will explore treatment of at-risk hypoglycemic neonates, including safe use of dex-trose gel, new therapeutic hypothermia studies, sepsis screening and the trend for decreased antibiotic use, special considerations for resuscitation and stabilization of ELBW babies, and CCHD screening and physical assessment to help differen-tiate between cardiac and other illnesses. All of these topics will affect the next S.T.A.B.L.E. Program 7th edition update! Rx

Kris Karlsen, PhD, APRN, NNP-BC

PC6 - Critical Care Obstetrics 18-19

This presentation will provide an overview of essential concepts and current issues related to critical care obstetrics. LINET Americas 625

While nurses in women’s health, obstetric and neonatal facilities around the country report feeling well-equipped and prepared to serve the “traditional” family, most admit they often have to “wing it” when it comes to serving “unique” families. Unique families can include: adoption and surrogacy arrangements; single, teen or same-sex parents; incarcerated patients; refugees and immigrants; and, those struggling with substance use disorder, sexual assault, and domestic violence. Join us for a glimpse into the Unique Families Program, an innovative, nurse-led healthcare initiative that is taking the nation by storm. This powerful session is certain to bring awareness to a critical gap in the standard of care model and the need for this program. This dynamic program goes above and beyond basic clinical care. You will learn the Principles of Neutral, Compassionate Care, instantly raising your level of comfort in caring for unique families before, during, and after delivery. The event will begin with wine and cheese reception followed by educational presentation. All attendees will receive a gift bag upon entry.
