The period between mid-July and mid-August is typically the hottest partof the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Last August tied two previousyears, 2015 and 2017, as the hottest since we began keeping records
nearly 150 years ago. The warmest month on record is August 2016, and thetop five have all occurred since 2014. This month is forecast to be no different.
At U.S. Tech, we usually have about a month to cool off before the rushof the fall trade show season, but coming off the heels of an excellent virtualSEMICON West, we are looking forward to more similar virtual events. Whilethere is no replacement for a physical show, the convenience of a virtual expofor those who cannot travel or those who need to save the related costs andtime, offers many benefits.
In fact, one downside of long-distance travel is the continued contribu-tion to our carbon footprint, which in recent years has become a pressing is-sue in the tech community.
This year, the main keynote at SEMICON was former vice president AlGore, who streamed an interview into a digital auditorium. Gore has been aproponent of environmental conservation since the 1970s, when he held thefirst congressional hearings on climate change, toxic waste and global warm-ing as a senator from Tennessee. He highlighted the importance of the tech in-dustry’s widespread movement toward renewable energy.
Google, for the last four years, has purchased enough renewable energyto match its global annual electricity consumption. The company has madepublic its goal to achieve the sourcing of enough carbon-free energy to matchits consumption in every place it operates at every hour of the year. Amazon,with its array of massive web services, matches around 45 percent of its ener-gy with renewable sources. This is both good for business and good for the en-vironment. As of the most current data, China accounts for about 30 percentof global carbon emissions, with the United States in second place with justunder half of that amount.
One way to begin to decrease the amount of these emissions is to reducetravel, which is very difficult in today’s global business environment. Howev-er, like the largest tech companies have begun to do, inflating the carbon foot-print can be offset by contributing directly to renewable and sustainable en-ergy efforts.
Late this year, or early in 2021, reports will be finalized about the changein carbon emissions and the global climate throughout 2020. Will a silver lin-ing to the cloud of the current pandemic,and all our waylaid travel plans, be aslightly healthier Earth?
We learned to drive on the surface of Earth before we could fly, and nowwe are learning again on Mars, albeit in reverse. The first orbitalflight around Mars took place in November 1971, when NASA’s
Mariner 9 became the first spacecraft launched from Earth to circle another planet. Mariner 9 narrowly beat out two Soviet spacecraft, which arrived in orbit only weeks later.
In December of that year, the USSR successfully landed the first vehicle on the surface of the red planet. The Mars 3 lander was able to transmit 70 lines of its initial image in 15 seconds, before going inexplicably silent. No cause of failure was officially determined, but the lander’s lifespan may have been cut short by a massive dust storm into which it was hurled by the Mars 3 orbiter.
Since then, there have been more than two dozen successful missions to the red planet, which is slightly over half of the total attempts. The latest is NASA’s most complex Mars mission yet. This new rover, Perseverance, is car-rying an especially delicate payload — a 4 lb (1.8 kg) helicopter named Inge-nuity.
Ingenuity marks the first attempt at powered flight on another planet. Mars has an atmosphere that is only 1 percent as dense as Earth’s. This means that the little chopper has to spin its carbon-fiber blades at almost 2,500 rotations per minute to remain airborne.
The helicopter will also be mostly autonomous. Due to the inherent com-munication delays between our planets, Ingenuity will be given directions well in advance and relay engineering data back long after each flight takes place. According to NASA, “Ingenuity will have a lot of autonomy to make its own decisions about how to fly to a waypoint and keep itself warm.”
The latter part is important because Jezero Crater, where the lander will set down in February of next year, reaches temperatures of –130°F (–90°C) at night.
Engineers at JPL worked for five years to refine the design of the mini helicopter, running through iterations to build one that could be lightweight, yet generate enough lift, and durable enough to withstand the planet’s envi-ronment.
The crater is an especially good location for the overall goal of the mis-sion, which is to explore the area around what has been identified as an an-cient river delta. Scientists believe that river channels once spilled over the walls of the crater, as evidenced by clay minerals deposited in its basin.
All of this adds up to the hope that Perseverance and Ingenuity will un-cover some small proof that life once existed on Mars. Small, in this case, meaning microbial in size. The robo-duo will work in tandem to scour the crater’s floor, collect rock and dust samples and store them until astronauts or more advanced robotic probes visit the surface in the coming years to re-trieve them.
If the mission is successful, regardless of its ultimate findings, it will be another incredible scientific and engineering achievement and a further sym-bol that many great things begin small. In fact, it was Northport, Alabama, high school student Vaneeza Rupani who originally came up with the name.
“The ingenuity and brilliance of people working hard to overcome the challenges of interplanetary travel are what allow us all to experience the wonders of space exploration,” wrote Rupani. “Ingenuity is what allows peo-ple to accomplish amazing things.”

The RENCO R35i and R35iLencoders are excellent for use inbrushless DC motors or steppermotor solutions. Their compact size,combined with the high level of per-formance and availability, makethese products a good choice forapplications in medical devices,warehouse robotics and laser scan-ning.
Both encoders now come with abrand-new diagnostic and field pro-gramming (DFP) feature not beforeseen on incremental encoders of thistype. This DFP functionality allowsusers to perform mounting checks,
