We know you are itching to get in the garden and

you can! Now is a great time to plant trees,

shrubs, and perennials. Stretch your hand into

those gardening gloves and try some different cool weather

loving annuals and vegetables this year.

Cooler temperatures and more frequent rains in spring

offer an excellent time to plant. Root growth is vigorous in cool

temperatures making for good strong plants. Soil is friable

when it easily crumbles between your fingers and is not soggy

wet. Feed clay soil with amendments that add nutrients and

loosen the soil.

Vegetables & Herbs Have you caught the gardening craze and want to try your

hand at growing more of your own food? Crops like lettuce,

cauliflower, broccoli, kale, cabbage, strawberries, Brussels

sprouts, leeks, onions, and more thrive in cooler temperatures.

Many seeds and herbs may be planted now also.

If new to gardening, we suggest starting small and

planting what you like to eat. Pick a sunny spot and plant your

favorite salad items. There are many varieties of herbs that can

be grown in containers and picked fresh for the grill or

cocktails.

If you enjoy trying new varieties, a few vegetables we’ve

added this year are ‘Mellow Yellow’ pumpkin, ‘Dragon’s

Tongue’ beans, and ‘Sungreen’ cherry tomatoes. Mint,

Rosemary, Thyme, Cilantro, and Lavender are popular herbs

for drinks and dining.

Annuals & Perennials Most of the perennials and annuals sold in spring at The

Growing Place have already been hardened off and can be

safely planted. To harden off a plant, or acclimate to cold

temperatures if starting indoors, place outside during the day

and bring into the garage at night for about a week. Keep an

eye on temperatures. If night time temperatures fall into the

twenties, bring your plants in or cover with a light cloth to

prevent frost damage. Our average frost free date is May 15.

If switching your winter containers over to early spring

color, choose from flowering bulbs, Pansies, Violas, Alyssum,

and more. There are so many varieties of cold tolerant

annuals!

Perennials such as Hellebore, Heuchera, Sedum, and Carex

can be grouped together in a larger container for curb appeal

then planted in the ground once the soil is friable for year after

year of early spring color in your landscape.

Trees & Shrubs Early flowering shrubs and trees are a welcomed sight in

spring. Plant Forsythia and Witchhazel for the earliest

blooming shrubs. Lilac, Viburnum, and Aronia are late spring

bloomers. Trees with pink and white blossoms include

Magnolia,

Crab,

Serviceberry,

Redbud, and

Cherry.

Jax | Male | 2 Years Old I am super sweet, super social, and obviously super handsome. Like everyone, I have my special routine… cuddles in the morning, naps in the afternoon, and energetic playtime in the afternoon. And oh how I love mealtime! I’m very good when it comes to using a scratching post, and I can’t wait to show you. I have to be the only cat in the house because I am FeLV positive. I’m so great, though, that I should be enough for anyone.

FABIENNE CORCORAN – 3512 CAINE DRIVE Since I have relocated to Naperville from Washington, DC

during COVID (2020), I was compelled to serve my new community. An election judge for Will County was one of the few opportunities to serve during the height of COVID.

I am focused, love to serve, and an effective communicator. I have served as a civil servant for the federal government, serving our country in the US and abroad. While living and working in DC, I volunteered every week in the Pediatric ICU. I am honest, empathetic, and a great listener. I am also fair, consistent and diplomatic. I have a Masters in Public Administration and over 31 years of executive leadership skills.

Therefore, I believe I have the necessary experience to serve as an Ashbury Board Director. I am also very enthusiastic to give my all to represent the Ashbury community. MIKE MANGES – 3708 DEFOE COURT

Prior to our family moving to Ashbury during the summer of 2020, we looked in the majority of subdivisions in District 204. We ultimately found the property we now call home. Everywhere we looked was “nice” and “clean” and “friendly”, but there was something different about Ashbury. It had a different feel, a different sense of community and overall setting that felt like it was out of a movie. We could not have been happier with our decision and are thankful that our children will get to grow up here.

It is important that communities that wish to thrive, and not only survive continue to adapt, grow and progress as a team. We have neighbors and friends in Ashbury who have been residents since 1994 as well as neighbors and friends who just moved in like ourselves. I am able to listen and understand perspectives from people who are both similar to me as well as complete opposite. My ability to be empathetic, compassionate yet lead and provoke positive change has allowed me to find success in many aspects of both my professional and my personal life.

In my professional life I currently lead a successful team that makes nonopioid therapies available for patients in our community who suffer from chronic pain. I have been in the medical device field for nine years which has allowed me to help people regain control of their lives which has been extremely rewarding.

We also own a business in the community that works with the local schools and youth programs to help them gain access to funds they need to participate in various programs and remain active and a part of a team during a time that has never been so important. Additionally, we work with young people to help them improve the mental aspect of their performance on the field, in the studio and in the classroom. I had the opportunity to play a sport professionally after I graduated from college, and those experiences I had and the community I was a part of helped lay the groundwork for who I am today.

In my personal life, we have two young children who don’t yet understand how lucky they are to have an opportunity to grow up in a community like ours. I would appreciate any opportunity to help continue to make Ashbury the best place to live, raise children, retire and thrive.

I have a Bachelor of Science – Business Administration, Finance degree, a successful business leader for a medical device manufacturer, and local business owner who serves high school and youth programs and schools Mental Performance Mastery Certified Coach.

HARRY OLIVER – 3116 BROSSMAN STREET I believe in giving back and supporting my community in any

way possible. I think Ashbury is a truly great place to live and raise a family, and I want to keep it that way.

I have served the HOA via my participation on the Swim Team Board for seven years and on the HOA Board for the past six years. I am currently the Treasurer for Ace Hardware Corporation and tasked with managing their corporate Treasury team, as well as risk management and a wholly owned insurance company. As a result, I understand the balance required between giving people what they want while adhering to the constraints imposed by a budget or set of bylaws.

If elected, I agree to serve as an Ashbury Board Director. I further understand that Ashbury Board Directors are held to fiduciary standards of performance which is the highest standard to which anyone can be held under the law. JONATHAN WALTERS – 3240 BARNES LANE

Along with you, I'd like to do my part to keep Naperville's streak alive as one of America's best places to live! Service is about selflessness, providing time, resources and commitment that puts community development before any singular demand.

I grew up in Naperville and, after 20 years in Chicago, I have returned with my own family to give back what I have been given. I would like to pay it forward! Having just moved back, my family and I are excited to dive in and actively participate in the maintenance and improvement of our community. And hopefully to make some great connections in the process! • OA President for 6 years in Chicago Managed requisite HOA business while engaging with neighbors and local businesses, improving the neighborhood while having some fun! • Organized and coordinated many workplace and community events. First to rolls up his sleeves, is always engaged and willing to do the heavy lifting. • Business Leader: Founder, executive, Board member, and mentor; bringing leadership, logistics management, collaboration, and coordination skills. • Builds, energizes, and leads as part of a productive team. Loves bringing people together to do good work (and have a good time in the process), which helps get initiatives off the ground! • Excellent listener and negotiator with a grounded personality. • Eagle Scout from Troop 505 in Naperville – Dedicated, loyal, and committed. • Firsttime Ashbury Alligator dad '22! RUBY BARTH WIESER – 3724 MANDEVILLE LANE

I have been an Ashbury resident for the past 8 years. I am a mother of a young daughter, wife and someone who loves reading, puzzles and gardening. I want to raise my daughter in a neighborhood that values community, acceptance and compassion, which I feel I can foster as a representative of the HOA Board.

I feel that being on the Board the last couple of years has helped me grow as a person and provided me with a larger focus than just my family. I look forward to meeting more families and seeing how the Board can also grow to serve the neighborhood.

I have experience in the legal and healthcare fields with a background in process improvement and strategic cost reduction. These skills can continue to allow me to provide insight and ideas regarding communication, costs and the decisions that the Board faces.

As we head into the spring warmer weather and storm season, often comes a barrage of scam repair contractors. Following thunderstorms, tornadoes and windstorms, scammers often move quickly into communities to take advantage of homeowners, pressuring them to make quick decisions about repairs. Roofing repairs are their number one target. Residents should be cautious about individuals soliciting doortodoor or random phone calls offering to assess your roofing damage. Don’t view your insurance carrier as your adversary, but as a partner in getting legitimate repairs done and completed by competent professionals. If you are suspicious about a contractor, you can call the Illinois Attorney Generals Consumer Fraud Hotline at 18003860618. Here are some tips our Attorney General offered in a March 2017 release. • Be wary of contractors who go doortodoor to offer repair services. Ask for recommendations from people you know and trust and, whenever possible, use established local contractors. • Visit the Better Business Bureau’s Central Illinois or Chicago websites to see if a business is a member and whether any complaints have been logged against it. • Even if there is a need to act quickly, shop around. Get written estimates from multiple contractors, and don’t be rushed into a deal. • Get all of the terms of a contract in writing, and obtain a copy of the signed contract.

• Never make full payment until all the work has been completed to your satisfaction. • Never pay in cash. • Be aware that you have the right to cancel a contract within three business days if you signed it based on the contractor’s visit to your home. • In the case of disaster repair, you have an additional right to cancel. If your insurance carrier denies coverage, you have the right to cancel the contract within five days of when your insurance carrier denies your coverage. • Ask to see required state and local permits and licenses. Insurance adjusters and roofers must be licensed by state agencies. If the contractor does not have a required license, or if the name on the license doesn’t match the name on the contractor’s business card or truck, that should raise a red flag. Please visit the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation’s website to search licenses. Contact the Department of Insurance at 8664455364 to verify that the public adjuster is licensed and in good standing. The Attorney General also reminded consumers that the Illinois Repair and Remodeling Act requires contractors to provide customers with written contracts for any repair or remodeling work costing more than $1,000. A contract must be signed by both the customer and the contractor. The law also requires contractors to carry at least the minimum amounts of insurance for property damage, bodily injury and improper home repair. Contractors also must provide consumers with an informational pamphlet entitled “Home Repair and Construction: Know your Rights.
