FEATHER BouquET

A traditional Norwegian thing to do around spring and Easter time is to make a display of feathers. Simply collect a few branches or twigs and some feathers. Then cut the twigs down so they will fit inside a vase and start decorating them with the feathers. Smaller feathers are best, but if you do this with children, then bigger ones might be easier. Use small pieces of thin wire to fasten the feathers to the ends of the twigs one by one. I used about a dozen feathers for the display shown here. This is another beautiful bouquet that will not die any time soon, and can be used to decorate your home throughout spring.

58 59the blocks paper-pieced hexie

Paper-Pieced HexiePaper-Pieced HexieI love English paper-pieced quilts but I’m not a fan of all that seaming and hand sewing. With this pattern you can replicate traditional paper-pieced quilts and make hexagon ‘flowers’ by joining a ring of hexagons around a central motif. You can build up a stunning blanket or throw by joining your hexagon flowers together.

Emmy’s Cushion is a fun way to use the popcorn stitch, as well as the shell stitch. Using contrasting colours to make the popcorns pop, as well as placing them in different repeats, creates a lovely textured cushion cover. While the popcorns are an extreme texture, the shells are a more gentle one, and I love the way that the two complement each other to create an interesting piece.

Branches and Vines Stitch Along with flowers and blooms, my family and I love seeing the branches and vines that appear at the start of spring. To achieve this textural effect in crochet, I have used some post stitches such as treble crochet and double treble crochet, in combination with half treble crochets placed directly behind them, in order to prevent any gaps in the fabric. The post stitches essentially float over the top of the work, and by changing the colours of those stitches in particular, you can create a beautiful representation of flowing branches and vines. This fabric is one-sided only, similar to embossed stitch (see page 34). The difference here is that while embossed stitches are not part of the overall count of the row, these stitches are created in the half treble crochets behind them, and so count as one stitch.

PatternThis stitch is best worked in multiples of 10 (see chart).Start with a multiple of ch 10 + 1.Use grey (A), brown (B), and green (C).Colour note: The contrasting colour is carried at the back of the work and cut at the end of each Rs row.ROW 1: With A ch 21, dc in 2nd ch

from hook, and in each ch across, turn – 20 dc.

ROW 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), dc in each st across, turn – 20 dc.

ROW 3: Ch 2 (counts as 1st htr here and throughout), htr 5 in BLO, with B tr 2, with A htr 8 in BLO, with B tr 2, with A htr 2 in BLO, turn – 20 sts.

To finish your branches and vines, top them with a picot by chaining three and slip stitching in the third chain from the hook.

To work a branch, yarn over and insert your hook from front to back around the next indicated stitch. Yarn over and draw up a loop, then yarn over and draw through two loops.

Next, yarn over, insert your hook into the next half treble crochet, yarn over and draw up a loop, then yarn over and draw through all of the loops on your hook. This will anchor your branch.

Summer #18 Lemon Peel Stitch

Made with a combination of double and treble crochets, the lemon peel stitch creates a delightfully bumpy surface that feels really neat under the hand. It creates a one-sided fabric and, unlike many of the stitches we have looked at, it is worked wrong side facing. Normally, the lemon peel stitch is worked with one stitch per space, but for this swatch we are going for high texture, so I have doubled the number of stitches every other row to maximize that fresh, bumpy texture. A simple return row of double crochet stitches returns the count back to normal, and changing the colour of that return row adds a little peek of colour behind the lemon-peel texture.

Lemon Peel StitchPatternThis stitch is best worked in multiples of 2 (see chart).Start with a multiple of ch 2 + 1.Use yellow (A) and green (B). Colour note: Change to B on rows 5, 9, 13 and 17. ROW 1: With A ch 23, dc in 2nd ch

from hook and in each ch across, turn – 22 dc.

ROW 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st here and throughout), (dc, tr) in each st across (see step sequence, below), turn – 44 sts.

ROW 3: Ch 1, dc in each tr across, turn – 22 dc.

ROWS 4–21: Repeat rows 2–3. Fasten off, weave in ends.

To work the lemon peel stitch, start by creating a double crochet in the next indicated stitch.

Spotlight on Lemon Peel Stitch

Working in the exact same stitch that you made your double crochet, work a treble crochet.

The bump from the treble crochet will lean towards the right side of the fabric.

1 What interests you Ask yourself, as you look

at the scene, what your eye is drawn to the

most. Trust this initial response, even if it’s only

a seemingly insignificant part. Your personal

preference and interpretation is the most

important ingredient in any artwork you create,

as it makes it uniquely yours.

2 Dominant feature Often you will be drawn to

the dominant feature of the building, such as a

dome or grand entrance. How does this relate

to its surroundings? Can you see it from a

distance? Is the building aiming to make a bold

statement or blend into its environment? These

factors are prompts for your story.

3 Zoom in If sketching the whole building seems

a little overwhelming, walk up closer and just

focus on one part. There is a lot that can be said

about the big picture from sketching a small

section, particularly if it hints at the whole.

Tips to get you started

The most important step in fast sketching of architecture is the very first one. The few moments that you spend thinking about your subject

before you start can radically reduce the time taken to do the sketch. It will give you a focus, a story to tell, so that you don’t have to draw

everything. You will be able to say more with less!

Find your story

Right Liz Steel, Sultan Mosque, Kampong Glam, Singapore, 2015.I started with the gold dome and then simply hinted at the busy street of stores lined with palm trees.

Below Virginia Hein, Pasadena City Hall, Pasadena, California, 2013.Virginia zoomed in to focus on the fancy entrance to this grand city hall and the equipment being unloaded from a truck for a big event.

Above Daniel J. Green, Arc de Triomf, Passeig de Lluis Companys, Barcelona, Spain, 2013.Daniel’s selective lines give the viewer lots of information about this highly decorative arch and its surroundings, without drawing it all.

How to see

12 13

4 Zoom out On the other hand, the further back

you go, the less detail you will need to draw.

Zooming out reduces the building to its most

basic elements so you can focus on big shapes

and how they relate to their surroundings.

Detail is often a time killer, so reducing it is

always a goal in fast sketching.

5 Time frame It is always important to consider

how long you have to complete your sketch

before making a single mark. If all you have

is just a few minutes, you will only be able to

record one aspect of your subject. What is the

one thing that you absolutely must record?

It’s all about prioritizing!

1 Changes in plane Begin by looking for any

major changes in plane – areas that indicate

a different underlying volume. Towers on either

side of a cathedral front are a good example.

2 Structure and rhythm Look next for the major

structural elements, such as columns and

entablatures (horizontal bands) in classical

buildings, or buttresses in gothic architecture.

They create the major divisions in a building

and once they are positioned, everything else

will just fall into place.

3 Storeys and bays For large buildings, you

might think that counting windows is the way to

divide up the façade, but it is much quicker to

count their bays and leave the windows until

later. When it comes to dividing the building

vertically, look for the important joints that

describe the changes in storeys. Once again,

it is much faster to get these on your page

before you start the details.

Tips to get you started

The next step to sketching architecture, and especially complex buildings, is to work in a ordered way, starting with the major structural components.

Once these are locked in during the first few minutes of your sketch, it is much easier to then add windows and details. It is also good to practise

drawing front-on sketches of building façades before attempting more angled views that require perspective.

Set out the basic structureHow to see

20 21

4 Differing widths Look out for any storeys or

bays that are wider than the others. These often

occur horizontally at the ends and in the central

bay. Vertically, there is often a reduction in

height as the building ascends. Every building

is unique, but knowing these general rules will

help you quickly see the differences in width

and make allowances instinctively.

5 Centrelines for alignment A lot of buildings

have different sized windows on each storey.

Drawing a centreline down the middle of the

bay will make it a breeze to align all the

variations in window designs! You can do this

with a pencil or just a thin, dashed pen line.

You won’t notice it in your finished sketch.

Left Liz Steel, Catedral da Se, Sao Paolo, Brazil, 2014.A tiny thumbnail, which only took me seconds, helped me work out the major changes in plane and volumes of this cathedral.

Below Asnee Tasna, Shophouse at Thalang Road, Phuket, Thailand, 2014.This fun sketch starting with a shophouse stamp shows how Asnee simplified the adjacent buildings to create an impression of the whole street.

Right Liz Steel, Jones Street Fire Station, New York, USA, 2010.All the line work for this sketch only took a few minutes, as the overall structure was very easy to simplify and get on my page.

like a ‘dream upon the water’, as Charles dickens noted in his travelogue, venice

has always enthralled its visitors. william turner brought the light of this city onto the

canvas. this impressionist painter, whom i have always admired for his bright and

expressive paintings, inspired me to create this abstract painting. Painting the picture

on a survival blanket was a happy accident that had come about through a minor

irritation: a vehicle roadworthiness test found fault with my expired first-aid kit. In

the studio, i took a close look at the problematic item and so i discovered the survival

blanket. at the same time, i became aware of an upcoming william turner

exhibition. Together, these two events created my first picture on a foil base:

golden City.

japanese everyday objects and objets d’art conquered the western world in the

1860s. France in particular enthused over Japan’s fine porcelain and elegant fabrics

and textiles. these non-western themes, subjects and exotic shapes provided

inspiration and created a longing for the unknown in impressionist artists. degas,

Monet and Manet were the first painters to take up these stylistic expressions. This is

how monet’s famous water lilies paintings came about. i am always fascinated by

the japanese pictures that i come across, such as photos of ink drawings, highly

contrasting painted faces or richly decorated robes. i also like to be carried away

into this foreign world and interpret it in my own way.

Width: 7.5cm (3in)Height: approx. 9cm (3½in) at the highest pointLength: 15cm (6in)

POURING BOWLThese little pouring bowls are fabulous for sauces, dressings or dips and look great on any table. Decorated in soft pastel shades for a really contemporary look, the bowls look particularly good in groups of three or more.

YOU W I L L N EED

TOOLS – Banding wheel (turntable)– Wooden spatula – Flexible metal kidney– Small round object (cookie

cutters are perfect)– Small loop tool– Brush for slip application

CLAY Grogged white earthenware– 225g (8oz) for each bowl– Coloured decorating slip

DESIGN NOTE– This project is made from a white clay body but, alternatively, red terracotta can look really stunning with pale slip decoration.– You could use a stoneware body but be aware the clay will shrink more in firing, resulting in a smaller end product.

DECORATIONThese practical little bowls look their best simply coloured with slip on the inside and finished with a transparent glaze, but could be decorated more elaborately if preferred. See pages 156–172 for other options for decoration.

Soft pastel shades for functional wares are always a good colour choice because they don’t detract from food and look clean and contemporary, especially when simply glazed with a transparent finish.

2 2 Maintaining the centred position on the wheel using the concentric lines as a

guide, work over the surface of the bowl with a kidney to remove lumps and bumps and establish a definite, flat level for the base.

11Pinch a basic bowl from the suggested quantity of clay. Place the bowl rim-down

at the centre of your banding wheel, then paddle the surface with the wooden spatula, to refine the shape.

400g (14oz)

CEREAL BOWLThis is a straightforward, quick and simple bowl to make in repeat, and is the ideal size for serving your breakfast muesli or a comforting dessert.

The added bonus of these bowls is that they stack neatly for easy storage – always a win when space is lacking.

2 2 Place the rudimentary bowl on a wooden bat and continue to press and pinch

the base outwards until it is approximately 13cm (5in) wide, leaving a thick, doughnut-like wall. The base should be about 5mm (¼in) thick when finished.

1 1 Form your clay into a ball. Open out the centre of the clay, then pinch the shape

to form a wide base, working as far as your fingers will allow you to reach.

YOU W I L L N EED

TOOLS – Small, rigid plastic or rubber

kidney or rib– Straight-sided metal palette– Knife– Surform or rasp blade– Flexible metal kidney

CLAY White stoneware – 400g (14oz) per dish

DESIGN NOTEFor a deeper bowl, increase the weight of clay fractionally, then working to the same base width dimensions, pinch the wall to the height required.

DECORATIONThe finished bowls have been simply decorated using a glaze-on-glaze technique. See pages 163–170 for this method and other decorating options.

Two coats of Mayco Sea Salt brush-on glaze were applied to the surface of the bowls, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next. Stripes of grey have been applied over the base glaze, on the wall only.

Width: 18cm (7in) Height: 15cm (6in)

700g (1½lb)

SECTIONAL DISH FOR DIPSThis is a great little dish for centre of table, to serve dips, sauces or preserves. The generous handle makes it easy to carry and pass around and the design can readily be adapted in size for serving other dedicated food stuffs.

YOU W I L L N EED

TOOLS – Metal kidney or rib– Wooden spatula– Surform or rasp blade– Wooden modelling tool

CLAY White stoneware– 170g (6oz) for each bowl– 170g (6oz) for handle

DESIGN NOTEThe number of dishes can easily be increased from three to four if a square arrangement is preferred – the making principles are exactly the same.

DECORATIONThe surface decoration on these dishes uses a glaze-on-glaze technique with wax resist. See page 168 for this method and pages 156–172 for other options for decoration.

A simple wax resist line detail, over a base glaze, with a secondary glaze over the top, has been used to decorate the surface of the dishes.

Bisque fired to cone 06 (999ºC/1,830ºF)Glaze fired to cone 6 (1,222ºC/2,232ºF)

2 2 Work over the bowl shapes with a kidney to refine and smooth the surfaces inside

and out. Now tap each bowl on the work surface lightly to establish a secure base, then triangulate their shape by gently flattening the sides with the wooden spatula.

1 1 Divide the clay into four equal amounts of 170g (6oz) each, then pinch three of

them into open bowl shapes, slightly wider at the rim than the base. When finished, all three bowls should be exactly the same size at the rim.
