ABOUT ARSUTORIA SCHOOLARSUTORIA is the world leading school for shoes and bags professionals. We strongly believe that a career in the field of shoes must be funded on a deep knowledge of the product: engineering techniques, materials and components, technical constructions. ARSUTORIA is the only school based in a fashion capital with an internal sample room where students of the 12-week pattern making and prototyping course can have their prototypes of shoes manufactured A portion of our students aims at creating their own brand. Another part of our graduates represents the younger generation of footwear companies’ owners. On average 50% of our students are financed by a company.

With students from over 50 countries we offer all courses in English. Average age of our students is 25. Most of them already have a working experience. Therefore, we have specialized our offer on short courses. Although part of our students already has an experience in the field, our courses start from the fundamentals. Thanks to the intensity of the program, students always achieve more than they expected. All our teachers are professionals with a significant working experience in prestigious companies. Their heritage is in design and manufacturing of quality shoes. Our students work in companies with different target prices. We teach them how to match their pricing requirements while keeping high

quality standards.

The school is located near the center town of Milan. We offer accommodation in apartments located in the same building of the school.

Since 2015 ARSUTORIA school is certified ISO9001 and it is accredited for technical

training.

DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVESThis 12 weeks class has been the core offering of ARSUTORIA School for over 70 years. The pattern engineer is the professional who translates ideas into products. His main responsibility is the development of the patterns of upper and lining. He must be familiar with all the materials and components used in the manufacturing of shoes including lasts and soles. The strength of Italian pattern engineers is one of the key ingredients for Italian reputation in the field of footwear.

Several students take this class to become pattern makers or technical developers. We encourage them to add the 4-week advanced class after to this 12-week to get an outstanding preparation for the industry.

Other students take the pattern making class to become shoe designers with a strong technical insight. To complete their curriculum, they take the 4-week footwear collection design class

The ARSUTORIA diploma is issued at the end of the course to students that have successfully completed the final assessment

FOOTWEAR PATTERN MAKING AND PROTOTYPING COURSE

WEEK 1 - 8: PATTERN MAKINGMajority of class hours is dedicated to upper making techniques, a topic which we believe is indispensable for both designers and technicians.

There is a sequence of designs studied that start from the more classic styles such as pump, ballerina, derby, oxford and loafer. Classic measures, traditional proportions and correct style lines are covered.

Once the basis is established, the learning path brings students to a more advanced level with the study of more difficult designs such as: more complicated pumps and challenging lace-up shoes together with simple and asymmetric sandals, moccasin, ankle boots and boots.

A number of hours is dedicated to theoretical lessons. Topics covered include but are not limited to:

• international systems of sizes and widths• different types of lasts that can be used for different shoe styles and constructions• different types of soles (die-cut, molded)• bottom constructions (cemented, stitched, injected, vulcanized) and materials used

(leathers, rubbers, thermoplastics, polyurethanes, EVA, etc)• edge finishing and proper use of threads

We organize the following visits:

• one day at Lineapelle fair (in March and October)• in a leather tannery • in a footwear manufacturer

2D/3D CAD FOR FOOTWEAR DEVELOPMENTOne entire week is dedicated to the use of CAD systems in the footwear industry.

2D CAD systems are commonly used in most of the Italian footwear factories for pattern engineering and cutting.

In the recent years, also 3D CAD has reached a very good quality and footwear companies are increasingly implementing these technologies both in the pattern making area and in the design area.

At ARSUTORIA school one classroom with 20 workstations is dedicated to footwear CAD. An automatic cutting table is also available at the ARS-LAB

During the CAD week, the following topics are taught: use of the digital file of a last, flattening of the shell, pattern making, basics of size grading, nesting and cutting and calculation of material consumptions.

WEEK 9- 11: PROTOTYPING Starting from week 9 students are challenged to put in practice the techniques they have learned and they are required to develop one or two prototypes with the support of the technicians that work at the ARS-LAB

Initially students think of a design, they choose materials, lasts and bottom components among those available at the school. Then they have to make the patterns for upper and lining and they cut the pieces in the materials they have chosen.

After cutting the pieces, students work side by side with a professional stitcher: they must understand the impact on their designs of different operations like splitting, skiving, reinforcing and then stitching Once the uppers are ready they move their prototypes to lasting: our technicians show them the entire process: toe and back lasting, bottom roughing and pounding, heel nailing and sole attaching.

We spend a day at the Kenda Farben shoe finishing laboratory where students can apply different finishing to their prototypes with the support of the company specialists.

WEEK 12: FINAL ASSESSMENTThe final exam is an opportunity to recap all the subjects covered during the course and to assess the progress in skills and knowledge. It takes three entire days and it includes:

• a fit testing session on students’ prototypes• a written test on pattern making rules and on the contents of the theoretical lessons• a practical exercise: students have to make the patterns of a given design• a final interview ARS-LAB: OUR VERY OWN SAMPLE ROOM

Inside the facilities of ARSUTORIA school we have set up a footwear factory where a team of Italian technicians guide our students through the unique experience of making shoes. Students do not learn how to use the machines but they understand what happens in production. They can interact with the technicians while their prototypes flow through the different steps of manufacturing. They assist step by step while their design is translated into a real product Every student work on his/her shoe sample but they all also can learn by looking at the projects of the other students.

FOOTWEAR ADVANCED TECHNICAL COURSE

DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVESThis 4-week course can be taken separately or in conjunction with the 12-week pattern making course. We highly recommend taking the entire path of 16 weeks to those who wish to work as footwear designers or launch their own brand.

Overall objective of the course is to immerse participants in the process of creative development of a collection of footwear, focus their creative ideas and present them through a good level of sketching

At the end of the training program students will be able to:• make hand drawing of different styles of footwear, including sketches of lasts, insoles,

heels and outsoles of various kind• prepare a precise technical drawing of a shoe with the support of Adobe Illustrator,

add materials such as leather and fabrics and make a rendering with Photoshop• understand time and action calendar of a footwear collection from design to retail,

different roles and functions involved in the process in more structured organizations• focus your design idea and search for trend inspirations • build a footwear line based on the framework of a merchandising plan • communicate the DNA of a brand, its market positioning and competitors in a

consistent way

On top of the 2 weeks dedicated to hand sketching and digital design with Photoshop and Illustrator, students will learn processes of collection development: from market analysis to the application of the important activities of merchandising.

Actual examples of merchandising plans from fashion companies will be explained and analyzed. We will recreate the atmosphere of a typical style/product office of a footwear company. Students will work as a team to design collections and the creative part will be supported by the teachers. This phase will stimulate students and their creativity and will allow them to deal directly with all that they have acquired in previous classes. Then, individual work will follow, aiming to design and build a mood-board and from this to create a mini collection through freehand drawings, rendering and application of materials and colors.

Each student will present his/her draft collection to the entire class for a final evaluation. The draft prepared for the final presentation can then be used by the participants as their portfolio.
