Annual ReportFLORIDA THEATRE

Our mission statement

The mission of The Florida Theatre Performing Arts Center, Inc., as a nonprofit organi-zation, is to enhance the North Florida community’s quality of life by providing diverse and memorable arts and entertainment experiences, and by preserving a unique historic Jacksonville landmark.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

On behalf of the Florida Theatre Board of Directors and professional staff, we are pleased to present the Annual Report for the fiscal year that ended on September 30, 2020. Just 5-1/2 months into the year, Florida Theatre operations were of course cut short by Covid-19. The pandemic to be a challenge that casts a shadow over everything else. In fact, while preparing this report, we were surprised to remember how many good things happened before the theatre closed on March 12.

The biggest news before COVID-19 was that the Florida Theatre merged with Theatreworks, one of Jacksonville’s oldest arts organizations, dedicated to bringing the finest professional touring children’s theatre to Jacksonville to perform for school audiences. With no donor overlap and entirely complementary programming, the merger reduced costs, increased profitability, and allowed the Theatreworks staff to focus on programming.

Even though it was 38 weeks and 6 days from March 12 to the next show, attendance was already strong enough that the venue management magazine VenuesNow would ultimately rank the Florida Theatre as one of the Top 20 Tour Stops in North America for 2020. Many other highlights are captured in these pages. As of this writing, we’re open again, but at 50% of our capacity, with an upcoming schedule that is a fraction of what we’re accustomed to. We have changed our presentation this year so you can see in measurable terms exactly what was lost during the second half of Fiscal 2020.

This report doesn’t capture everything, however. One hundred nineteen show workers (stagehands, box office representatives, security workers, bartenders) still do not have significant employment. Our administrative staff is 25% smaller than it was in March. Everyone still employed at the theatre is working for reduced wages.

In a typical year, the Florida Theatre’s budget is about $9.5 million. In this particular year, 96% of the income we would have earned in the second half of the year disappeared. We were fortunate to receive help covering our survival costs

from a Payroll Protection Program Loan and an Economic Injury Disaster Loan from the Small Business Administration; a CARES Act Grant from the City of Jacksonville; and a Covid-19 Response Business Community Relief Loan from Vystar Credit Union and the City of Jacksonville.

We also made it this far because the theatre’s supporters stepped up. Community First Credit Union renewed its season sponsorship for five years, and 100% of our Corporate Partners renewed their annual memberships too. The number of individuals making a membership contribution fell by just 5%, and the f act that the number of donors fell just slightly is a strong statement about the importance of the Florida Theatre in our communal lives.

One good thing to come out of the pandemic is that as long as the theatre was closed anyway, we accelerated a $2 million improvement project slated for next summer, and replaced the theatre’s seats and sound system. It was possible to do that work now because we already had dedicated funds in the bank, plus a match from the City of Jacksonville. Thanks to all of the campaign donors listed later in this report, as well as Mayor Lenny Curry, his administration, and the Jacksonville City Council for their support of improving the historic Florida Theatre.

We’re open again with a limited schedule of performances. Some people are comfortable attending, and some are waiting until we are truly in an “all clear” position. In either case, we are pleased to share this Annual Report with you, and to thank you for your own support of the Florida Theatre. We look forward to seeing you again soon. PS – In a nod to one of this year’s “at home” past times, this year’s report is presented as a coloring book. Click here to download printable pages you can color with your family. Then take a photo of your creation and post it to social media using the tag @floridatheatre.

CENTENNIAL CAMPAIGNThe Centennial Campaign proposes to improve the historic Florida Theatre and its physical assets in time for the Florida Theatre’s 100th anniversary in 2027. The $10 million campaign is funding investments that increase the organization’s ability to generate revenue; improve the customer experience; and reduce daily operating expenses through capital improvements. The campaign has already funded new and historically appropriate theatre seats, and a new state of the art concert sound system. Contributions to the campaign are matched up to $1 million a year for 5 years by the City Of Jacksonville’s Capital Improvement Program. These 149 individuals and organizations, many of whom already make an annual membership gift, have made a significant contribution towards this campaign:
