2017 ANNUAL REPORT 3
Dear Colleagues,
The privilege of caring for residents of Central Virginia is something the providers and staff at Stroobants Heart & Vascular Center take extreme pride in. To demonstrate this, we are very
excited to present the inaugural outcomes book for the Stroobants Heart & Vascular Center. The purpose of this book will be to objectively demonstrate the excellent care our Heart Center offers.
We are very proud of the physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, medical office staff and all other ancillary staff that make the heart center perform at a high level.
SOME OF THE ACHIEVEMENTS YOU WILL SEE HIGHLIGHTED IN THIS BOOK ARE:
When a patient in our community is presented with a need requiring expert cardiovascular care, you can rest assured they will be met with nothing less than excellence at every point in their journey through our health system.
Sincerely,
Chad Hoyt, MD, Executive Medical Director William Robert Price IV, Managing Director Stroobants Heart & Vascular Center Stroobants Heart & Vascular Center

Along with the US News & World Report Top Hospital in Virginia ranking,
recognized by national consumer publication as one of the top 3 cardiovascular
practices in Southeast and 50 Top hospital designation by IBM Watson health,
Centra Lynchburg General and Virginia Baptist Hospitals are receiving the
prestigious 5-star ranking. Through the elimination of hospital-acquired
condition penalties and achieving the best overall readmission performance in
the Commonwealth, these awards and rankings only further distinguish Centra
as a premier healthcare system. Rounding out Centra’s facilities, Southside and
Bedford hospitals improved from three stars to four stars.
Only 337 hospitals out of 4,000 across the country were awarded this highest
ranking. In Virginia, Centra is only one of eight in the state to be recognized
with five stars. These rankings can be found on the CMS Hospital Compare
website, that is provided to the public to help patients make educated
decisions. As the bar is continually raised, we look forward to continually
setting it.

A YEAR IN REVIEW
As we look back on 2017, we are humbled by how much was accomplished
thanks to a dedicated, multidisciplinary team that is patient-centered and
quality driven.
What has been accomplished is a direct result of individuals going the extra mile in all areas to
not only save lives but also provide patients with the best possible tools for success all the while
looking to serve more than just the physical needs that our patients bring with them. To
that end we expanded services, including pharmacogenetic testing and a licensed
social worker to provide the most comprehensive care possible, as well as expanded
service offerings at satellite locations and increased access. We are excited
by everything that has been accomplished in 2017 and look forward to
building upon that success. Highlights include:
• Added Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) for patients suffering from chronic Angina
• Launched a cardio-oncology initiative
• Further expanded our genetics offerings to include Pharmacogenomics testing
• Added Mitra Clip as a Structural Heart service
• Expanded the Lynchburg General Hospital Cath to now have a fifth EP lab room
• Added vascular and EP procedures to Farmville Cath Lab
• Joined other sub specialties as part of the new Danville Medical Center
• Added two new imaging cardiologists, one electrophysiologist, additional advance practice providers which then allowed an increase in providers and access to all clinics
• Imaging became a Signature Lab
• Added Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) for comprehensive care
• Brought wound care into the Lynchburg office

Stroobants Cardiovascular Center offers comprehensive care for children and
adults with congenital (from birth) and acquired heart disease. Congenital heart
disease is the most common category of birth defects, affecting 1–2% of the
general population.
Thanks to advances in medicine and surgery, a great majority of children born with even the most
complex heart defects now survive into adulthood. Our team provides formal clinical care for CHD
patients (and for many healthy patients deserving specialized evaluation) in three dedicated clinics:
fetal, pediatric and adult congenital cardiology.
Fetal Cardiology: The diagnosis of congenital heart disease is increasingly made prior to delivery.
Identifying and characterizing a heart condition before birth promotes coordination of care and
improved health outcomes for affected newborns.
Pediatric Cardiology: Infants and children are seen and followed in our pediatric cardiology clinic.
Comprehensive surgical and inpatient care is coordinated with regional academic institutions.
Adult Congenital Cardiology: A formal transition process to our adult congenital cardiology clinic
is introduced in adolescence and occurs at age 18. Each patient’s detailed understanding of his or
her unique history — including diagnoses, therapies and prognoses — is a priority. Some adults
who have had surgical correction of congenital heart defects live with a misconception that they
have been “cured,” however, most people born with heart disease are best served by ongoing,
comprehensive care.
CONGENITAL & PEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGY

The Structural Heart Center offers evaluations to
determine the most effective treatment strategy for
Mitra and aortic valve disease. Patients are assessed
for minimally-invasive therapies versus conventional
surgical procedures.
Our utilization of this customized and multidisciplinary approach
gives patients the best opportunity for a successful outcome as
well as a plan for continued local care management. A recent
clinical study of patients who underwent a TAVR procedure was
shown to have a lower incidence of death and stroke compared
to open heart surgery. TAVR may shorten recovery time to
allow patients to return to everyday activities. Patients reported
quality-of-life improvements within 30 days, including the ability
to take care of themselves. As a result, TAVR is shifting from a
niche therapy for only the sickest patients to a mainstream, and
more often, preferred therapy.

The Congestive Heart Care Center helps manage patients with congestive
heart failure (CHF) through a multidisciplinary team composed of
board-certified cardiologists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants
collaborating with medical social workers, pharmacists and specialized
nurses to treat CHF.
The CHF team has a dedicated CHF inpatient rounding service that provides care
for hospitalized patients with acute heart failure as well as those with cardiogenic
shock. At Centra Lynchburg General Hospital we have a dedicated shock team that
utilizes the most up-to-date treatment modalities including temporary mechanical
circulatory support to care for critically ill patients.
Post hospitalization our CHF team of specialized nurses and pharmacists
work to ensure a smooth transition out of the hospital. This
multidisciplinary approach is continued in our dedicated CHF
clinic in an effort to improve quality of life and reduce the
morbidity and mortality rates associated with CHF. At the CHF clinic
we utilize the most up-to-date, guideline-directed medical and device
therapy including remote monitoring with both thoracic impedance and
CardioMems to improve outcomes and optimize care for CHF patients
and families.

CARDIOPULMONARY REHABILITATION
More than just guide patients through recovery after a heart-related event, the cardiopulmonary
rehabilitation team at Centra serves the central Virginia region at multiple facilities by helping patients
move into overall lifestyle changes to not just survive, but thrive.
Research has shown that cardiopulmonary
rehabilitation significantly reduces the risk of heart
problems reoccurring. Our certified team members
take pride in creating individualized plans of care and
treating more than just the physical. While the core of
cardiac rehabilitation is exercise, the program also targets
nutrition, diet and weight management, as well as
handling the emotional aspects of recovery.
PROGRAM BENEFITS:
• Improve overall strength
• Understand symptoms and medications
• Return to daily activities
• Improve quality of life
• Help our patients do more of what they enjoy!
Pulmonary rehabilitation is an individually
designed program to help patients improve
their overall health by working to
increase strength and endurance. The
program is overseen by a team of medical
professionals who are specifically trained to treat
people who have lung disease.
PROGRAM INCLUDES:
• Exercise sessions designed for people with chronic lung disease
• Education to learn about lung conditions, medications and how to prevent infection
• Breathing and relaxation techniques to reduce shortness of breath
• Dietary support for weight management
• Social support and engagement with others

IN THE COMMUNITY
Stroobants Cardiovascular Center’s commitment to our communities
to pursue heart health goes far beyond our walls. Preventing
and treating heart disease is just the start because a healthy
community is more than just the absence of illness.
Through our community programs we seek to educate on heart health
as well as healthy living, provide support to those living with and
effected by heart disease, create awareness, and effect change
not only in our local communities but globally as well.
CMG Stroobants Cardiovascular Center is proud to
support Mended Hearts, the largest peer-to-peer
heart patient support network in the world.
Mended Hearts is a national community-
based organization that has been
offering the gift of hope to
heart disease patients, their
families and caregivers for
over 65 years by providing
education and support.
The local chapter has monthly
lunches, open to the community, that
aim to raise heart disease awareness
and provide education.
of Blue Ridge
IT ALL STARTS WITH THE HEART!
HeartAware is our free heart risk assessment where community members
are welcome to schedule a free clinical follow-up. The assessment can be
taken on our website, in person at one of our many community events or
on a mobile device. At the clinical assessment, the nurse navigator can give
direction to helpful resources that Stroobants Cardiovascular Center offers at
low or no cost, such as the free smoking cessation classes or the Nutrition,
Eating and Wellness (N.E.W.) program.
Should a patient be severely at-risk, additional tests such as calcium scoring
can be ordered at a much reduced cost and a visit with a cardiologist can be
set up. Other risk assessments are also available through our nurse navigator
and encompass everything from DiabetesAware, SleepAware, to PADAware.
The key to beating heart disease is preventing it and this is one way we can
actively engage and educate our community on just that.

MAKING THE NEXT BREATH EASIER AND MORE ENJOYABLE
One of our pulmonary rehab groups, called “Harmonicas
For Health,” is now available for community bookings.
This group of COPD patients brings awareness
to lung disease and highlights what can be
accomplished by playing their hearts out
all around the community including a
recent performance at a Lynchburg
Hillcats baseball game!
HEART MONTH 2017
During the 2017 Heart Month we posed the question to
the community “What makes your heart sing?” and created
a series of engaging print advertisements, radio spots, and
regional community luncheons where we spoke to not only
the importance of physical health, but also the benefits
to your heart that a positive mindset and perspective will
give you. The luncheons reached over 400 community
members who were all treated to acapella performances
and heart health talks by Stroobants Cardiovascular Center
cardiologists. We also celebrated in the community, through
talks and community fairs:
• National Atrial Fibrillation Month September
• The Great American Smoke Out as well as National COPD Month in November
• Presentations and live cooking demonstrations on healthy eating throughout the area
• Partnered with the American Heart Association and supported their Lynchburg walk
• Primary sponsor of the Jim Cameron Memorial Walk that raises support to help the underprivileged in Bedford, Pittsylvania and Bedford communities

PETER O’BRIEN, MD is co-chair of the
Virginia Heart Attack Coalition and has worked
with the American Heart Association’s National
Guideline Writing Committee for System of Care
Development for Myocardial Infarction and on
the American College of Cardiology’s Door to
Balloon initiative workgroup. As co-chair of the
Virginia Heart Attack Coalition, Dr. O’Brien has
brought together:
• The Virginia Chapter of the American College of Cardiology
• American Heart Association
• The Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services
• Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association
• The Virginia College of Emergency Physicians
• The Virginia Department of Health Heart Disease
• Stroke Prevention Project
and many other partners across the state. These
groups work together to improve systems of care
for the early recognition and treatment of all
Virginia residents having heart attacks.
Centra is proud to have hosted the 2017 Virginia
Heart Attack Coalition annual meeting where
approximately 100 experts from across the
Commonwealth participated in the 8th annual
meeting, held at Centra Lynchburg General in
Lynchburg, Virginia.
Additionally, you can find
Dr. O’Brien serving as Medical
Director of Madaktari. Madaktari serves the country
of Tanzania by having expert medical staff in
specialty fields such as cardiology and neurosurgery
work with Tanzanian physicians and the local
government on developing advanced medical
programs and their infrastructure. In practical terms,
this means that they train local medical staff in both
medical interventions and how to effectively teach
their newly acquired skills to others.
Dr. O’Brien also enjoys bringing with him to Tanzania
support from the Centra Foundation as well as many
of our other physicians such as Chad Hoyt, MD SCC
Executive Medical Director, and Michael Valentine,
MD president of the American College of Cardiology.
As an active volunteer, Dr. O’Brien led a team that
performed the first heart cardiac catheterization
ever in the history of Tanzania and the first PCI at
the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiovascular Institute. As the
current Medical Director of Madaktari, he continues
to work to advance cardiovascular education and
care in that region.
