Our MissionBlythedale Children’s Hospital is dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of children with complex medical illnesses and disabling conditions, through superb multi-disciplinary care, teaching, research and advocacy programs.

By combining expert medical care and rehabilitation, we provide hope to children and families with the goal of enabling children to be discharged home as soon as possible.

We see potential in each and every patient.

Our VisionAs the pre-eminent specialty children’s hospital in the New York metropolitan area, we change the lives of children and their families by serving higher acuity patients with a variety of special healthcare needs.

In the next ten years we will build upon our role as a national leader in transforming the way this care is delivered to medically complex children through a significant financial investment, and our ongoing commitment to building a first-class Board of Trustees, senior management team, and clinical staff.

Dear Friends,

Blythedale Children’s Hospital is filled with infants, children and teenagers, all fighting against burdens that no child should ever have to face. Their fight is our fight and we are tireless in our pursuit to help them to get better and to improve the quality of their lives – doing so in a way that is financially responsible and sustainable.

We are fueled by a moral imagination that compels us to push forward to address important unmet needs. The opening of The Steven and Alexandra Cohen Pediatric Long Term Care Pavilion set a new national standard for the delivery of care to kids with chronic medical conditions. Our new Health Home Care Management program helps post-discharge families navigate the complicated health care, educational, housing and social service systems, so that medically complex kids don’t fall through the cracks once they are home. Our Assistive Technology program is opening up a new world to children previously unable to communicate their most basic needs or interact with family members and friends.

Throughout our 128-year history, and as medical practice and technology have gone through extraordinary changes, we have maintained a steadfast singular focus on improving the health and quality of life of children with medical complexity – serving as a beacon of hope to some of the region’s sickest and poorest children, and their families. We couldn’t do this without you, our dedicated supporters.

For this reason, we are very proud to share the 2018 Annual Report of Blythedale Children’s Hospital.

We have been fortunate to count on an extraordinary group of donors – individuals, foundations, corporations, andthe community – to help us reach our goals throughout this historic time at Blythedale, as well as a Board of Trusteeswho generously support our mission and vision. We also gratefully acknowledge those individuals who have the foresight to provide for Blythedale’s future through planned gifts. Your commitment provides the gift of health to future generations of children.

On behalf of the thousands of children whose lives you have touched through your support, we offer our heartfelt thanks.

Sincerely,

David Pedowitz Chairman, Board of Trustees

Larry Levine President & CEO

Patient CareProviding exemplary patient care is central to everything we do. With more than 127 years of experience, Blythedale is a nationally recognized leader in developing innovative, multidisciplinary inpatient programs. As one of only 14 specialty children’s hospitals in the United States, Blythedale has the combined staff, expertise and resources – including the largest pediatric therapy department in New York State – to provide exceptional comprehensive care for medically complex children and support for their families.

Blythedale cares for children with a wide range of complex and often catastrophic medical and rehabilitative conditions, including complex respiratory disease, traumatic brain injury, heart disease, cancer, neuromuscular disorders, and serious genetic conditions. Through its inpatient, long term care, and day hospital programs, Blythedale treats more than 300 children daily, making it one of the largest providers of children’s health services in the State. Ensuring care of the whole child, Blythedale is the only hospital in New York State with its own public school on-site serving its patients.

2018 Highlights

• Blythedale recorded more than 400 unique inpatient admissions in 2018. Our average daily census for the inpatient unit and The Steven and Alexandra Cohen Pediatric Long Term Care Pavilion was 102 patients.

• The Hospital received admissions from more than 50 hospitals and leading academic centers in 2018, including NewYork Presbyterian (Columbia and Cornell), Westchester Medical Center, Montefiore Medical Center, Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Mount Sinai, Jacobi Medical Center, Yale New Haven Hospital, and Maimonides Medical Center.

• Blythedale became the first post-acute children’s hospital to treat a child on a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), highlighting the trust our referring academic medical centers have in our ability to care for some of their most complicated cases.

Malka on the Mend“I’ve never had a child who had a major organ transplant come back so quickly.”Dr. Mary Didie, Unit Chief of the Day Hospital Program at Blythedale Children’s Hospital, proudly uttered those words upon the return of nine-year-old Malka in March 2018, less than three weeks after receiving a life-saving heart transplant.

Malka was initially admitted to Blythedale in October of the previous year as the Hospital’s first LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) patient. Medical complications including heart failure, stroke and hemiplegia – as the result of cardiomyopathy – significantly impacted her health, necessitating the LVAD placement (which helped pump blood throughout her body while she waited for her transplant). In the months that followed, Malka received intensive rehabilitation with Blythedale’s multidisciplinary team, preparing her for the complicated surgery ahead. On March 8th, that momentous day arrived when Malka received her new heart.

Malka’s surgery was a great success and her transplant team at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital recommended she resume participation in Blythedale’s Day Hospital Program sooner than most post-organ transplant patients. Malka picked right up where she left off with her physical, occupational, and speech therapists – continuing her hard work toward recovery.

“I think it shows a great faith in this program by her transplant team,” said Dr. Didie. “We are an incredible resource for the community because children with so many different diagnoses can come, not miss school, and have therapy, while parents don’t have to worry since we have 24/7 physicians and nurses here.”

New Programs2018 ANNUAL REPORT

• In May, we went live with a new technology called Fiberoptic Endoscopy Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) that allows our feeding therapists to evaluate swallowing function in children. The device is an extremely thin scope with a camera that is passed harmlessly through the nose and visualizes the area around the vocal cords to assess swallowing. Prior to Blythedale’s adaption of this technology, patients required transfer back to their referring hospital.

• Blythedale’s Health Home Care Management Program - in partnership with the New York State Department of Health, the Bronx Accountable Healthcare Network, and HRH Care Community Health - brings the Hospital’s expertise and knowledge of community services to the homes of medically complex children (who meet New York State criteria). In 2018, two dedicated social workers worked with 32 children and their families in the Bronx and Westchester to help them navigate the complicated healthcare, educational, and housing systems.

• In October we formally opened our new Assistive Technology (AT) Outpatient Evaluations and Treatment Center. The Center provides comprehensive assistive technology services to help unlock the world of children devastated by their inability to move or communicate. In addition to opening the evaluation clinic, Blythedale’s Assistive Technology Professionals (specially trained occupational, speech and physical therapists) are providing outpatient therapy services, training teachers and parents, and offering consulatation services to schools.

Blythedale Children’s Hospital was honored to receive a $1,000,000 endowment gift to help support the Hospital’s Child Psychiatry Program from John L. and Hope Furth. The Furths have been longtime supporters of the Hospital. John joined the Hospital’s Board of Trustees in 1979, and has served in numerous important roles, including Board Chair. He has pro-vided significant guidance and support for some of the Hospital’s most significant programs over the last four decades. True champions for Blythedale, John and Hope’s generosity and foresight ensures future generations of children will receive access to the highly special-ized care thy need.

2018 Highlights

• Our neurosciences research program received its first grants from the prestigious National Institutes for Health (NIH). The awards will support our Motor Recovery program (led by Dr. Kathleen Friel) and our Vision Recovery Program (headed by Dr. Glen Prusky).

• Blythedale Children’s Hospital and Burke Neurological Institute announced the appointment of Dianna E. Willis, Ph.D., as Director of Research for the Burke-Blythedale Pediatric Neuroscience Research Collaboration. Dr. Willis joined Drs. Glen Prusky, Director of the Vision Recovery Program and Kathleen Friel, Director of Cerebral Palsy Research as co-Directors.

• The Collaboration marked the one-year anniversary of the implementation of a new neurotechnology system used for testing and tracking children with brain injuries. In doing so, Blythedale became the first hospital in the country to measure outcomes the same way for every child admitted with a brain injury.

Research is a critical activity at Blythedale. Now in its third year, the mission of The Burke-Blythedale Pediatric Neuroscience Research Collaboration is to translate advances in basic neuroscience made at the Burke Neurological Institute into improved treatment for children with neurological impairments – impacting movement, sensation, and cognition – at Blythedale Children’s Hospital.

Abby Heads Home for the First Time“We prayed for this day and this progress.”Abby has always amazed her parents and medical teams. The full-term baby was born with a prenatal diagnosis of an atrioventricular canal (AVC) defect and critical coarctation, both congenital heart defects. Within the span of only nine days, Abby underwent two reparative heart surgeries to save her life. Once her condition stabilized, Abby’s parents made the decision to transfer her to Blythedale Children’s Hospital.

During her time as an inpatient on the Hospital’s Infant and Toddler Unit, Abby received Blythedale’s full spectrum of services, including occupational, physical, speech, and feeding therapies. Over the next few months, Abby’s strength, stamina, and overall health increased to such an extent that she was able to be successfully weaned from her ventilator.

As their baby girl grew, Abby’s mother and father participated in the Hospital’s caregiver training program to learn all aspects of care for their medically complex daughter, while also gearing up for her potential return home. To give both parents more preparation time, Abby was transferred to the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Pediatric Long Term Care Pavilion at Blythedale Children’s Hospital, where she continued her therapies and treatments.

“She was not quite ready to leave and the family was still fine-tuning their training on her feedings, medications, and tracheostomy care before the big leap home,” said Dr. Milicent Mitchell, Chief of Pediatric Pulmonology. “The team worked very hard with Abby and her parents, on a daily basis, to get everyone where they needed to be.”

In just under six months, a more alert and engaged Abby was surrounded by her family, medical team, and new long-term care friends as she said goodbye. She was going home.

“We prayed for this day and this progress,” said Abby’s tearful mother. “When she came, she was on a machine helping her breathe and now she breathes by herself.”

2018 ANNUAL REPORT

Patient Defies Stroke, Paralysis and Wet Weather to Vote for the First Time Election Day was a particularly momentous occasion for one special inpatient. Eighteen-year-old Amoon cast her ballot in the important midterm elections and voted for the very first time.

The teen was admitted to Blythedale last October for comprehensive medical treatment and intensive rehabilitation following a ruptured arteriovenous malformation, or AVM (an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in the brain or spine that can cause hemorrhages, strokes or blood clots). This second stroke (the first occurring when she was 11) left her with significant left-sided weakness and worsening visual impairments.

Despite being hospitalized, her interest in politics didn’t fade. Prior to her unexpected medical setback, Amoon was studying Political Science as a freshman at Westchester Community College. One of the first things Amoon asked her multidisciplinary team at Blythedale was if she would be able to go out to the polls and vote. She remained motivated

to regain her strength and independence and continue healing – all in hopes of being able to exercise her democratic duty.

“Everyone here wanted to make that happen,” said Jessica Ritchie, LCSW, an inpatient social worker at Blythedale. “It’s incredible that voting remained a top priority for someone faced with such personal adversity. We all wanted to support her.”

This backing from her Blythedale family really made an emotional impact on the Yonkers girl, as she prepared for the big day.

“It made me feel really good to know that they were all about me getting what I really wanted,” said Amoon. “A lot of us here are only kids, but we have families that worry about healthcare, insurance and how to pay for it. So, that’s a big issue for me and what type of candidate I elect.”

Blythedale staff from across disciplines stepped up to bring Amoon to the ballot box - from using specialized technology to help her research candidates, to coordinating the specialized

transportation needed to get her to and from her polling place safely.

After weeks of preparation, Election Day arrived and Amoon was given the green light by her medical team to briefly leave the Hospital and cast her ballot in her home community of Yonkers.

“I was able to exercise my right to vote and it was incredible,” said Amoon. “It didn’t sink in until I processed the voting ballot through the machine and the lady said, ‘You’re certified’, and I got the sticker. “

“It is impossible to work here and not be profoundly affected by the tenacity of spirit of these young people and their families,” said Ritchie. “No matter the obstacles, they never give up. They keep fighting to heal and to thrive, and we want to do everything in our power to support them and give them every opportunity to maximize their potential. I think that’s the dream everyone has for children.”

“The bottom line is, when we talk about health care and policies that impact the provision of care to children and teens with medically complex conditions, we need to listen to voices like Amoon’s, because she has lived it,” she said.

AdvocacyAdvocating on a federal, state, and local level for programs that benefit children with special healthcare needs is paramount to our mission.  In 2018, senior leadership toured 15 state legislators, introducing them to patients, caregivers, and staff who live in their respective districts. Blythedale is proud of its superb relationships with these polititians, many of whom are leaders in the Senate and Assembly. These visits serve as a way to educate legislators and their staffers about Blythedale and the issues that are important to the kids and families we serve.

2018 ANNUAL REPORT

More than 630 people supported Blythedale through various fundraisers. Local businesses, recreational programs, and non-profit organizations took the lead in organizing initiatives in their neighborhoods, raising more than $155,000 in support of our children.

Since their first holiday benefit for Blythedale in 2016, Artisty Dance Project has raised more than $150,000 for Blythedale Children’s Hospital. In addition to their extraor-dinarily successful Holiday Show, this dedicated group – led by Kristina Leitenberger and Lori Lynch – also partnered with Bloomingdales and Sub-urbs 101 to host Dance for a Cause, bringing together dance and shopping as a way to raise additional funds. This dedicated and compassionate group has brought countless smiles to Blythedale.

9

Planned Giving & The 1891 SocietyThe 1891 Society honors donors who have made a legacy gift to Blythedale. These donors follow directly in the tradition of generosity and compassion that began in 1891 when a group of charitable women created programs to improve the health of children, and created the beginnings of Blythedale as we know it today. Blythedale Advisory Council

Blythedale’s Advisory Council is a non-governing committee compromised of young professionals who are committed to Blythedale’s mission and want to make a difference in the lives of children with complex medical conditions. This group serves as ambassadors for Blythedale by introducing friends, family, and colleagues to the Hospital, participating in service projects with our patients, and giving back to Blythedale through philanthropy and fundraising. Events hosted by this enthusiastic group raised nearly $15,000 in 2018, and founding member Allie Farber was honored at the spring gala for her longtime commitment to Blythedale.

10

2018 - A Very Eventful YearBlythedale’s event calendar was full in 2018 with events ranging from an elegant spring gala to the WCBS-FM benefit. Proceeds from events raised more than $1,700,000. For more information on Blythedale’s events, please visit www.blythedale.org/special-events.

On Tuesday, October 23, more than 150 participating restaurants throughout the greater Hudson Valley participated in the Hospital’s inaugural Dine Out for Blythedale event, contributing a portion of their proceeds to support Blythedale. Celebrity chef Waldy Malouf served as Event Chair and hosted a kickoff event where he showcased his skills during a cooking demonstration for patients, families, and staff.

WCBS-FM’s Scott Shannon in the Morning & The Big Show broadcast their final show of the year live from Blythedale in December and raised $95,000 for Blythedale’s Tiny Miracles program. The star-studded Holiday Spectacular included live performances by Matchbox 20 lead singer Rob Thomas (back for his 19th consecutive appearance), Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Gavin DeGraw, Billy Joel’s longtime saxophonist Mark Rivera, Acapella Group Six13, and Tim McLoone & Holiday Express. Scott Shannon has been a longtime supporter both professionally & personally of Blythedale’s mission and has helped raise more than $4 million through his radio benefits over the past 25 years.

The Stuart H. Dix Memorial Golf Outing raised more than $472,000 last year. Stuart, father of Blythedale Trustee Farrel Starker, co-founded the event in 2013 with Michael Brown. When Stu died unexpectedly in 2014, Michael and Steven Starker, along with their family and friends, carried on the tradition in his name. Since its inception, this incredible event has raised more than $2 million for programs and services benefitting Blythedale’s children.

11

Last year, nearly 300 supporters raised $800,000 to benefit Blythedale’s Tiny Miracles program at A Celebration of Blythedale held at the chic Tribeca Rooftop. The event also honored TD Bank and Emett Conlon; Blythedale Advisory Council Member Allie Farber; and student volunteers Dani, Jamie and Jenna Musoff (pictured at top) for their extraordinary support of the Hospital.

The BNC Insurance Golf Classic for Blythedale – held at Sunningdale Country Club in Scarsdale – was a record-breaking success, raising more than $260,000 for the Hospital’s Health Home program. More than 100 golfers hit the links and enjoyed a full day of golf, followed by dinner and an auction. Many thanks to longtime Blythedale supporter and Event Chair, Carmine Lippolis, committee members Andrew Castellano, Alan Gerstein, Dan Kortick, Roxanne Lippolis, and Robert Ranieri, Jr.

Blythedale was honored to be named a participant in BTIG’s Annual Charity Day – a star-studded event in which net commissions generated by BTIG are donated to nonprofit organizations. Celebrity “traders” work the phones, raising awareness for their chosen charity. The firm has raised more than $45 million for hundreds of charities, and Blythedale has received more than $413,235 over the last seven years.

How to Make a Gift to Blythedale

When you make a gift to Blythedale, you are helping miracles unfold.

At Blythedale Children’s Hospital, children and their families are at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to improving the health of children with complex medical needs and providing their families with peerless support and services. Our goal is to help children reach their maximum potential and return home as soon as possible.

This year alone we have treated many amazing children, such as Omouri, who was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) at just four-months old. The two-and-a-half-year-old is unable to talk or move independently, but can speak volumes with just a look or a grin. Blythedale’s Assistive Technology program has opened up Omouri’s world; enabling him to explore his environment, interact with his peers, and participate in school. Combining state-of-the-art technology and an expertly trained staff, we have unlocked Omouri’s world. We witness miracles such as this every single day.

We are inspired by all of our patients, and every day become more devoted to providing them with opportunities to dream, aspire and achieve. Philanthropy is key to offering the broad range of services necessary to address their medical and rehabilitative needs and transform their dreams into reality.

There are many ways to support Blythedale and help advance the finest in specialty pediatric care for medically complex children. You can make a difference. To learn more about ways to give to Blythedale, please visit our website at www.blythedale.org/ways-to-give or contact Senior Vice President, Chief Development Officer Robert R. Lane at 914-831-2544 or [email protected].

As we continually advance the finest pediatric medicine in the region, we acknowledge the generosity and encouragement of our many supporters.
