Bellin College’s 112-year legacy has delivered amazing results for the communities we serve. The vision of the college created by Dr. Julius Bellin was to educate nurses to provide outstanding care to his patients, and we are proud to carry on that mission while expanding our program offerings to meet the needs of the everchanging healthcare industry. Although we have faced challenges this year, we continue to provide quality education that is both innovative and responsive to the needs of our communities. We have many accomplishments to share with you.

During 2020-2021, Bellin College received accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) for three programs: Doctor of Nursing Practice- beginning fall 2021, Doctor of Physical Therapy- beginning fall 2022, and Surgical Technology/First Assisting beginning fall 2021. With these new additions, the college is offering a total of 16 different programs in the healthcare field ranging from certificate to doctorate level.

In 2014 when HLC re-affirmed our accreditation for 10 years, we were only offering programs in nursing and radiologic sciences. As we begin to prepare for reaffirmation visit, HLC will return in the academic year 2023-2024 to validate our growth, our achievements, and our successes. We continue to live out our mission of educating healthcare professionals for the future. In these challenging times, the college is supporting and meeting the healthcare workforce needs now and for years to come.

Our strategic initiatives through 2026 focus on our ability to meet the workforce demands in healthcare, our work within the community, the quality education we provide, our continued growth with programs and initiatives, and a strong financial feature. As we continue to maneuver through the pandemic, our students are in the classroom, lab, and clinical setting, gaining new knowledge and insight of the impact of COVID-19.

Our students rely on your continued support through scholarship, programming, and expanded amenities. With enrollment of over 800 students, we strive to serve and educate.

Bellin College has made an extraordinary commitment to providing scholarships and need-based financial aid to students seeking to better their lives by studying on our campus.

Keeping Bellin College’s high-quality education affordable depends on these essential elements — cost control, increasing financial aid, tuition restraint, and philanthropy — along with what we hope will be a continuation of reinvestment by each of you in our mission.

I believe our future success is defined in part by our ability to contribute to the solution of healthcare’s most daunting challenges in the workforce, bringing forward graduates that can meet the opportunities and be leaders in healthcare today. The initiatives and new endeavors we launched in recent years are helping to unleash faculty creativity in innovative ways. Collaborations are driving many accomplishments with our work in the Green Bay area and beyond.

If I had to summarize this past year, I would say that our employees and students stepped up and sacrificed together to be successful during a pandemic. I am proud of the work of our dedicated faculty and staff members who reimagined processes and embraced practices to ensure our success across the institution. I could not be more grateful to our trustees for their steady stewardship and support. A special thank you is extended to our donors whose continued belief in us and our mission allows us to grow and expand our educational offerings. Thank you and enjoy reviewing this report, demonstrating our growth and successes.

Positively,

Connie J. BoerstConnie J. Boerst, EdD, RN President/CEO Bellin College

A Message From the President

3Annual Report 2020-2021

Dear Friends of the College,

As much as we want to be finished with COVID-19, we have to accept the fact COVID-19 isn’t finished with us. Challenges remain and we are reminded daily what we do at Bellin College really matters. The pressing question of our time is whether we can make this disruption our friend and not our enemy. Many consider the world’s largest religious order, the Jesuits, the model of best practices in education. With a 450-year history as guide, the Order currently operates 2,000 institutions of learning in more than 100 countries. Jesuit ingenuity is the ability to innovate, absorb new perspectives, respond quickly to opportunities or threats and let go of strategies that no longer work in order to embrace the new.

While not a Jesuit institution, I believe Bellin College exemplifies these time-tested, solid principles. All members of college leadership continually rethink and reimagine; contemplate and then act; innovate and improve. All are in focus and in so doing are able to seize opportunities and overcome barriers. The board of trustees intentionally assist College leadership by practicing strategic thinking – an ongoing process that adapts and adjusts to changing circumstances.

Philanthropy supports extraordinary healthcare professionals. Bellin College has a stellar academic reputation – graduates of our programs are recognized among the best in the Midwest. Donors applaud and support these “healthcare heroes” – all members of the college community applaud and thank you.

With the Mission and Vision of Bellin College as our guide, we will continue to grow and evolve and remain relevant. To all volunteers, donors, staff, leadership team and board, thank you for joining on this vital journey. Together we will continue to make a profound impact and meet the growing healthcare needs of northeast Wisconsin and beyond.

Sincerely,

Mike Van AstenMike Van Asten | President, Incredible Edibles, Inc.

Giving ClubsThe Legacy Society of Bellin College, formed in 2001, provides donors the opportunity to remember the College in their estate planning. Sometimes making gifts to the College during one’s lifetime is not possible, and a bequest is more feasible. An estate gift leaves a legacy to our students by supporting their education and making a career in nursing, diagnostic medical sonography and radiologic sciences possible. We thank the many forward-thinking benefactors of the College whose legacies have already provided the College with more than $1.7 million in gifts.

11Annual Report 2020-2021

As we continue to expand our programs in health sciences, we did a thorough review of our Mission, Vision, and Values to align with our initiatives. Our updated statements are reflective of our program growth, inclusivity, and our emphasis on leadership. This process included input from all college employees and the Board of Trustees. In May 2021, the Board of Trustees approved these new statements.
