ANNUAL REPORT | 2019

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

TODD BUEHRIG

The 2019 Annual Report puts an exclamation point on the end of my

first year as your Executive Director, and what an incredible journey it’s

been! 2019 was transformative for the Southeastern Chapter National

Safety Council as we directly impacted the lives of a record 43,835

people. We trained more individuals, offered more educational courses

and expanded our mission to more communities than at any other time

in the organization’s 57-year history.

We are especially proud of our community safety initiatives that reached new and diverse

audiences. During National Teen Driver Safety Week, we launched a Distracted Driving Simulator

tour promoting the dangers of distracted driving to thousands of high school students. We also

provided free Pediatric First Aid, CPR & AED training to almost 4,000 childcare workers through

a rewarding partnership with the SC Department of Social Services. But these are just a few

examples of what we have been up to.

We reserve the last page in this report to highlight our Staff and Board of Directors, but in my

book they are number one. They are a passionate group of individuals from across South

Carolina and Georgia who have devoted their lives to safety and make sure we stay focused on

the mission and the financial stability of the organization.

I hope you enjoy the enclosed report and learn something new about our progress and

accomplishments. Thank you for being our partner in safety!

Yours in service,

I would like to commend you on your defensive driving course. Since taking it, I have become very conscious of my driving habits. I see drivers everyday who think their destination is more important than safety. I believe ALL drivers should be

required to take this course.

Driver’s Education for Low-Income & Foster Youth

Learning to drive is a rite of passage for all teenagers, bringing

independence and opportunities. But teens in foster care, or teens

with limited means, often face significant barriers to obtaining a

driver’s license, including the inability to pay for the various fees

associated with becoming a driver.

Recognizing this disparity, SCNSC launched Keys to Independence:

Drivers Education for Low-Income & Foster Youth. Funding from our

generous sponsors provides over 150 students FREE drivers training

through our SCDMV approved nonprofit driver’s education academy.

During National Teen Driver Safety Week, SCNSC and State Farm

partnered to remind South Carolina teen drivers that distracted

driving can be deadly. The SCNSC Distracted Driving Simulator

visited five high schools across the state to bring students a

hands-on learning experience.

- Becky Blevins State Farm Vice President-Agency

Traffic Safety Highlights

Protecting and educating young drivers is a significant focus for State Farm. Almost 60% of teen crashes are caused by distracted driving, and we want to end this

epidemic in South Carolina.

THANKS TO OUR ALIVE AT 25 SPONSORS!

Car crashes are the number one killer of teens in South Carolina today. The Alive at 25 defensive driving course aims to end these tragic fatalities by taking an innovative approach to driver’s education for the 15-24 age group.

Instructed by law enforcement officers and first-responders, Alive at 25 is a statewide program required by 40% of South Carolina public high schools. The curriculum includes guided conversations and activities designed to influence a positive change in students’ behavior behind the wheel, both as a driver and as a passenger.

In 2019, SCNSC trained 15,515 students, certified 19 new instructors, and welcomed Wando High School, Catawba Ridge High School and Riverwalk Academy to the program. SCNSC also launched a new e-survey, allowing students to provide anonymous feedback like the comments below.

179,504 Students completed since program launch in 2007!

” - 2019 Student Survey Responses

This class is amazing. I’m so thankful I was able to get this experience to have this awareness when I’m driving. It’s amazing how y'all enforce these driving

skills and information, however it’s up to us to interpret it and you bet I did. THANK YOU!

“ ”

“ I really enjoyed this class; I feel more comfortable with driving and I understand more ways to keep myself, passengers, and others safe on the road while I am driving.

Volunteer Spotlight

Sponsor Highlight

- Student Survey Responses from Blitz Event

“ It was very eye opening and will help me change some of my driving behavior. Now that I have recently lost some friends to a accident I see the impact it has on others.

Continental Alive at 25 Sponsored Events

In fall 2019, Continental Tire generously sponsored five Alive at 25 “Blitz” events with 30 total classes. Nearly 1,000 students from 15 participating high schools received free Alive at 25 training, lunch, and 5 lucky students won a full set of Continental tires for their vehicle! Because of Continental’s support, 52% more students from these schools took the Alive at 25 class in 2019 compared to the previous year.

It was great and eye opening! The stories impact you and make you think ‘what if

that was me.’

MaryChris Delcioppo’s passion and commitment for the safety of young drivers in her community helped begin a new tradition for students at Wando High School - the state’s largest school. Alive at 25 classes launched at Wando in October 2019, and 1,500 Charleston area teens will complete the program before fall 2020. Additionally, SCNSC welcomed six new Alive at 25 law enforcement instructors in the Charleston area and partnered with Mount Pleasant Police Department to offer extra classes that will meet the needs of Wando High School’s population of more than 4,000 students.

I started a mission 2 years ago after receiving a call about a student who died in a traffic accident on the way to school. I did not know this young man, but I sat at my desk and sobbed. Parents on social media said they wanted more police on campus and more punishment for bad driving. I knew in my heart that was not going to teach them anything, so I started searching. This is when I learned about Alive at 25. It is my dream to see all the schools and kids in the tri-county area take the class and make it to 25!

Emergency Care In medical emergencies, bystanders are the first on scene and have a duty to respond before first-responders arrive. With comprehensive, OSHA compliant emergency care training, SCNSC empowers employees and citizens to save lives.

Childcare providers should always be properly trained on how to respond appropriately in an emergency, not only to save a life but also to avoid legal actions. Daycare employees gain confidence from NSC’s Pediatric First Aid, CPR & AED class, and it increases the chances a provider can and will assist in an emergency.

ABC Quality Partnership

SCNSC, in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Social Services, provides Pediatric First Aid, CPR & AED certification courses to childcare providers across the state. This training program ensures daycare employees have the knowledge and skills to save a child’s life in the event of an emergency and to respond to any injury.

GPS correlates safety to long-term success because it supports our daily mission of serving the communities in which we have a presence by having healthy and productive employees who go home in the same condition as when they arrived at work.

As CEO, I decided to invest in the safety education of our staff in 2018 and 2019 by sending all staff, including myself, to a National Safety Council OSHA 10-hour class. The OSHA 10 card has empowered us to make wise business decisions concerning placing our associates and provided us with the confidence to have the tough conversations with our associates and clients concerning safety issues that may arise in the workplace.

Workplace Safety Highlight

BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina

As South Carolina’s leading health insurance carrier, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina is committed to maintaining a safe workplace and making sure every employee gets home safe. BCBS has worked with SNCSC staff to develop an outstanding safety and health plan to support more than 11,000 employees. Since 2017, BCBS employees have completed 16 workplace safety training courses with SCNSC, including Emergency Preparedness, Safety Management Techniques, Ergonomics, Job Safety Analysis, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Inspections and First Aid, CPR & AED.

In 2019, three BSBS safety managers proved their in-depth knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of workplace safety and health. Pictured left-right, Jim Morris, Robbie Johnson and Bryan Tolar earned the NSC Advanced Safety Certificate (ASC) in 2019.

We appreciate everything that NSC has done for us in these past few years. Between 2016-2019, BCBS event claims dropped by 77%, and dollars in claims dropped 51%. We have found a wonderful partner in

NSC and an excellent source of knowledge and guidance from Wendy Padgett, your Training Director.
