VISIONTo Develop and Empower the

poorer section of the society and

bring them to the mainstream

The year 2018-19 has been a creative year for MOTHER. During this period, MOTHER has successfully worked in mainstreaming the vulnerable section. It provided awareness to the backward communities regarding socio economic factors. A lot of environment protection activities especially focusing on soil health has been done in Tumkur District by community driven actions. MOTHER is outreaching the people, to provide them better life.

Water is essential for life, without water we can’t survive. Water links and maintains all ecosystems on the planet. Hence to reduce surface runoff and to infiltrate the available water the MOTHER has planned for strengthening of water storage structures under NABARD assisted Water management project which will be implemented in the coming year.

For rural empowerment, it is highly required to enable farmers to enhance productivity through efficient, cost effective and sustainable resource use and realize higher returns for their produces, through collective action. To build a sustainable collective agriculture sector, rural economic hubs are needed. This can be achieved by promoting and supporting member owned producer organizations. Hence the Organization will put hands on upgrading existing FPOs into

with the support of enthusiastic personnel.

The learnings during this year helped the MOTHER a lot to feel the pulse of people in various areas such as agriculture, water conservation, soil health, village unity, health and technology.

Major accomplishments with the support of various funding agencies and departments described with necessary statistics is presented in this report.

Fodder development. It is envisaged that the sale of sheep and milk brings good

income for families. Using cow urine and cowdung, sheep manure in agriculture

reduces the chemical usage and increases the agriculture income. Total covered

beneficiaries are 103.

People have shown good interest in the activities. Along with animal husbandry

they are implementing organic manure production units.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

Enhancement of Agriculture productivity through Integrated Livestock management

Soil Project

The goal of this program is “to reduce vulnerability to climate change of small scale

farmers through conservation, stabilization and improvement of natural resources

in five villages come under Salughatte Nala Watershed, Sira Taluk, Tumkur

District”. This NABARD-KFW fund assisted project envisages rehabilitation of

degraded soils and building climate resilience by improving adaptive capacities of

the vulnerable community against changing climate.

During the year, focus given on Agro Horti Forestry model establishment, Borewell

recharge pits, Bio digester, Liquid fertilizer preparation, Organic manure

application and cultivation of drought resistant crops. A total of 168 Ha of

agriculture land is covered under sustainable NRM activities. Income of 30 farmers

got doubled during the year.

NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Integrated water management through watershed approachThe objective of integrated water management scheme is to consolidate the works already

undertaken in the villages during the Water Conservation Campaign implemented during the last

year and implement time bound concrete action plan in 562.54 Ha. The project envisages

development of micro watersheds @ 250 acre per village through implementation of soil and

water resource conservation and efficient management activities. It will also focus on soil fertility

improvement and enhanced agriculture production. To make best use of available schemes and

benefits of different government and other private agencies, area suitable Area Development

scheme and convergence programs will be adopted well into the project to make it an integrated

development approach.

The project will be implemented in 562.54 Ha with the effective community participation in all the

programs. During the reporting period concentrated on identification of treatment areas and

preparation of detailed project report. Contacted line departments and obtained village

development scheme details to incorporate under convergence and credit plan. The project has

got sanctioned from NABARD in the month of March 2019.

SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD

Integrated Tribal Development Project

The uncertainty of farm income coupled with poor economic capacity of the tribal makes long-term investment in agriculture very difficult. To overcome these problems, Tribal Development project is proposed to improve the quality of life of 508 poor tribal families through WADI (Orchard) Development Approach and other sustainable income generating activities'. This six years project is proposed to be implemented in 4 villages of Kudligi Taluk of Ballari District with the Support of NABARD's Tribal Development Fund.

During this year, conducted capacity building activities such as focus group discussions, street meetings, Self help group meetings, trainings and exposures. As it was very less time for preparatory works, motivated the farmers to commence soil and water conservation activities in the selected land. Net planning was done at farmer field and supported 103 farmers to complete trench cum bunding activity. Out of 103, 60 farmers completed plantation activity in the year. Fig, Jamoon and Lemon plants with forestry seedlings were planted in the farmer fields.

As the year suffered by dry spells, arranged for tractor tanker, cement tanks and farmers buried pitchers beside the plants as critical irrigation with the project support. The tanker was managed by Kayakalpa CLC formed under the project and it took care of watering the plantation and filling water to pitchers and cement tank once in fifteen days.

Fodder Development

Animal husbandry is the second major livelihood for rural India. With giving importance to livestock, one should focus on fodder development and effective utilization of available fodder also. Hence in the view of supporting animal husbandry, integrated fodder trees into agriculture in various programs implementing by the Organization. Assisted farmers to grow fodder in their small patch of land under UPNRM, Organic farming and Integrated farming system programs.

To avoid wastage in fodder and to increase the consumption capacity of animals, introduced chaff cutters under UPNRM program. It crushes the fodder into small pieces of 2-3 cm. This aids the animal's digestion and prevents animals from rejecting any part of their food. The result of the activity was tremendous. Observed 100% fodder consumption with 0 wastage. Attracted by the result, S3IDF a voluntary organization came forward to support the program. It has given Rs.5 Lakh interest free term loan to our Madakari Souharda Co-operative to increase the number of chaff cutters through loan assistance to farmers.

Tree Based Farming

Apart from agriculture, creating any other sustainable

livelihood is a true task in rural areas. The mono

cropping practice since decades, has made the

agriculture miserable. Diversified agriculture is the

only way to get farm income. In this view horticulture

and forestry plantation in dry lands been most useful.

Trees are absolutely essential to integrate various

production systems and thereby achieve sustainability

in dry land agriculture. This is especially true for small

farmers. In marginal lands, addition of tree biomass to

soil helps in enhancing soil fertility and thereby

increasing yield.

This assured sustainable eco-friendly income

generating activity for development of poor families has

been taken up with the support of the MCKS food for

hungry foundation. It was targeted to support 60 acres

under the project. A total of sixty five acre converted

into tree based farming system in the year.

Rural Economic Agri-Cultural Hubs (REACH) program

For rural empowerment, it is highly required to enable farmers to enhance

productivity through efficient, cost effective and sustainable resource use and realize

higher returns for their produces, through collective action. To build a sustainable

collective agriculture sector, rural economic hubs are needed. This can be achieved

by promoting and supporting member owned producer organizations. Hence the

Organization will put hands on upgrading existing FPOs into Rural Economic

Agricultural hubs with the support of enthusiastic personnel.

The goal of the program is to “create Rural Economic Agri-Cultural Hubs” to

empower and enrich economic development at Gram Panchayat Level in Rural India.

The Objective of these hubs is to transform the Grama panchayats into revenue

generating activities with processing and non processing units, Achieve self

sufficiency and export of food grains, pulses, oilseeds, fruits and vegetables and to

contribute to National GDP.

Turning point“I realized my dreams through the MOTHER projects” said by Jaibunnisa w/o Lt.Babusab, Hunasekatte, Sira taluk, Tumkur district. Her is a small family with six members. The family is landless with no any other asset.

When MOTHER started to implement NABARD assisted FIP watershed project in 2009 in this village through Salugatta nala watershed Committee, she joined Mahalaksmi SHG, started weekly savings. Later she was selected under Land less beneficiary program. She participated in all Capacity building training. Project Provided Grant Rs. 4100/- for establishment of bangle business and she also contributed Rs.495. She purchased items like bangles and 4 wheel mobile cart. She stopped tobacco leaf rolling work and started sales in the home itself; her husband supported her selling bangles in neighbour villages by carrying bangles in the bag. They are using cart for selling of bangles in neighbour villages fair. Every day they were earning Rs.150 from bangle sale. But after her husband's death, she became helpless and started selling bangles in home itself. And again started beedi rolling with bangle business to earn bread. Investing more money in bangle business was became challenge dream for her, as her earnings was insufficient to meet her family expenses.

When the NABARD KfW assisted soil project which was aimed to reduce vulnerability to climate change of small scale farmers and landless farmers through conservation, stabilization and improvement of natural resources initiated in the village in 2017, she was selected as a beneficiary. MOTHER team motivated her to improvise her business. She was changed her membership from Mahalakshmi SHG to Sahyadri SHG 4-5 years back. The project provided loan assistance through Salugatte FPO which is formed in the same area for welfare of watershed and surrounding village farmers and groups.

Salugatte FPO provided Rs.100000/- loan to Sahyadri group; from which she took a loan of Rs.40000/- from the SHG. After successful repayment of loan, Rs.9000/- grant assistance will be provided by the project as backended subsidy. Rs.40000/- loan assistance is sufficient to enhance her business in more attractive way. She can keep more designs and quantity of bangles to avoid women going outside for purchase of bangles. She is earning Rs.4500 to Rs.5000/- per month from bangle business

In the year formed 14 Participant groups/ common interest groups, 4 Village planning committees and an FPO. Following table shows the different CBOs formed by the Organization since establishment-

Mother staff when entered Jermali for Tribal Development project implementation it plotted to be very much unsophisticated in delivering the projected targets. During the early days it took whole month to complete one single wadi plot implementation. We were very much obsessed and feeling regret that we may not reach up to the expectations. It was challenging; Later on with successive interactions, video shows & gramasabhas we could engage people in track towards the program implementation. During some of our visits, we noticed Bunch of unemployed youth engaged in spending their valuable time just by playing “ dyes” usually played in villages. We discussed & insisted those people and enrolled them in projecting the pitting works. Around 10-12 members formed in to two batches and progressively participated in implementing and at present Jermali village earned the highest percentage of wadi implementations among the project area. People from Jermali village especially those unemployed youth turned to be very happy & are repeatedly questioning us to allot them with same kind of work.
