I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.
A t South Shore Conservatory, we understand the power of music to change lives.
Music is innate within each of us. It is the rhythm of each heartbeat, the notes that bring us to a place and time and feeling, and the unifying connection between communities and generations. It has the remarkable ability to heal.
Although making music is always the number one tool in our kit, our work at SSC is first and foremost about changing lives. It’s something we’ve believed in since our inception in 1970. When a performer conquers her stage fright to give her first recital, or a person living with Alzheimer’s sings along to an old favorite in a Memory Café, or a kindergartner learns to read through ImagineARTS, or a community connects during a concert, we are making music, changing lives.
Through programming at our Hingham and Duxbury campuses, and many partnership programs in community centers, public schools, retirement villages, and concert halls across the South Shore, we engage more individuals than ever
before. In 2018 alone, over 3700 students from 68 communities registered for more than 6200 unique SSC programs.
We could not achieve this essential work without a host of individuals – faculty, staff, students, parents, volunteers, audiences, partners, and donors. Every individual within our community plays an essential role in making SSC a growing force on the South Shore.
In addition to recording the year’s activities, this annual report is a reminder of the importance of our work, and a visual celebration of the positive difference your generosity makes in the lives of South Shore residents.
Thank you for consistently hitting the right notes!
- Billy Joel

Ultimately, I realized I had a deeper passion for music - so deep that I even felt I wanted to make a career out of it.
Allison Burns Junior Intern, Student Leadership Team
photo: Paul Hoffman
Meet flute student Allison Burns, one of the newest members of SSC’s dynamic Student Leadership Team (SLT), recommended by her flute instructor Donald
Zook because of “her focus, determination and hard work.”
As a member of SSC's Student Leadership Team, Allison engages with other students across instruments, genres, and disciplines; working together on service-oriented projects and initiatives to benefit the student experience at SSC. These high school students commit to a minimum of two years with SLT, which currently works on fundraisers for tuition assistance, Performathon, and an instrument petting zoo for SSC’s Preschool/PreK/K students.
A participant in Flute Symphony for many years, Allison arrives early every Wednesday in the summer to mentor and coach younger students in the program. She has also won SSC’s Woodwind and Brass Solo Competition.
But Allison’s experience at SSC extends beyond flute. “I danced for ten years, and took part in José Mateo’s Nutcracker for four years. It honestly was one of the best experiences of my life, and will always be one my fondest childhood memories,” says Allison. As high school approached, she knew she had to make a decision. “I felt I had to choose which one I wanted to do
more. Ultimately, I realized I had a deeper passion for music - so deep that I even felt I wanted to make a career out of it.”
In addition to her activities at SSC, Allison is first chair in the Duxbury High School (DHS) Wind Ensemble. She has participated in Junior and Senior District festivals, receiving All-State recommendations. She runs DHS’s chamber music program, which performs throughout the South Shore, and is also a DHS cheerleader.
“It has been wonderful to watch Allison grow as a talented, young musician and into the leadership role she now holds on the Student Leadership Team. Her passion for music and her drive to share it with the people around her are a gift!” says Student Engagement Coordinator Sarah Troxler, who overseers the team.

Debbie and Phil Edmundson have long been an integral part of the SSC community. Debbie, one of SSC’s first students, and Phil have served as overseers, rolled up
their sleeves to volunteer, and supported SSC, both personally and through their winery Château Edmus. When their children Carrie, Lauren, and Will began lessons, they became SSC parents. Will studied percussion in our Jazz/Rock/Pop (JRP) department for ten years, went on to graduate from Berklee College of Music, and returned to SSC as Summer Music Festival faculty member and JRP performer!
One of the Edmundson’s biggest contributions is raising the visibility of our JRP department. Knowing firsthand the strength of SSC’s JRP program and its faculty and students, Debbie and Phil helped launch the JRP Series in 2014. From serving on the committee, to hosting a concert in their barn, to becoming the series sponsor, the Edmundsons and Château Edmus have been involved every step of the way. Now in
its fifth year, the JRP Series presents concerts and events at both SSC campuses, as well as at offsite locations. This past September, son Will performed at the JRP Series Kick-Off Concert.
“We love the JRP Series and music program! The opportunity for students to perform alongside the outstanding JRP faculty is incredibly valuable. Students are supported as they take emotional and musical risks,” Debbie shared.
Our most ardent JRP department advocates, Debbie and Phil encourage their friends and family to come and listen to our JRP faculty and students, assuring them they will love what they hear, and learn something new every time.
We thank the Edmundsons for their loyal and genuine friendship, and dedication to sharing what makes us special and unique!

This past May, South Shore Conservatory celebrated six years of partnership with the Brockton Public Schools by giving its 10,000th children’s book to 720 kindergarteners
participating in its ImagineARTS arts-integrated literacy program. The book was Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain.
“My students (and their parents) are so very thrilled to get the great books from ImagineARTS! The students love that they know the story from their class with Miss Holly (Jennings), and they are so proud to show off their knowledge to their parents,” said Dawn Miller, an ImagineARTS Partner Teacher at the George School. “The books are an important part of our curriculum. The stories are familiar and easy to build units around. Some rhyme, some have great characters, some are just fun to read. The students respond very well to them.”
Every week, ImagineARTS specialists provide arts-integrated literacy instruction using music, drama, dance, and stories to
promote important pre-reading skills and make the stories come alive for kindergarten students in Brockton. Classes and arts activities are story-based, focusing on a picture book through which specific letters, vocabulary words, and literacy concepts are explored.
To help bridge the gap between school and home, SSC provides four books from its core curriculum for each kindergartener at its five partner schools: Arnone School, Angelo School, Baker School, George School, and Gilmore Elementary School.
ImagineARTS is provided free of charge to partner schools through the generosity of local friends, business sponsors, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Middleton Family Sponsors Hingham Memory Café
In January 2018, South Shore Conservatory launched a Memory Café at the Hingham campus, underwritten by Joan Middleton and her family. Memory cafés offer music, arts, and social connections to people dealing with Alzheimer’s and
their care partners. The café honors the memory of Joan’s late husband, Michael Middleton, a former member of the SSC Board of Trustees. “Until the very end, Mike continued to enjoy and appreciate music – it resonated with him,” Joan says. Along with her son, Tom, and daughter, Leslie, Joan believes that the café is a way to “bring back the smiles.” A second café launched in Duxbury in May 2018 with support from the Harry and Mary E. Grafton Memorial Fund.
The SSC Memory Café is designed to support those Alzheimer’s patients who are still living at home. Using trained music therapists and facilitators, the café provides an inviting space where the stigma of memory loss can be set aside while individuals enjoy an opportunity to create music and experiences. SSC understands that, with mounting healthcare needs and services, many who wish to attend may have limited funds. With the support of the Middleton Family, SSC is able to provide the café free from cost for all participants.
As SSC expands work with Alzheimer’s patients and others with memory loss issues, we are able to collaborate more with organizations geared towards providing research and support for patients and families. The work we are doing is critical to creating a plan to stall the progression of this debilitating disease and we are excited to share our findings with researchers in the future.
