PRESIDENTS REPORT

“It is my pleasure to present the 121st Annual Report to the members of the SydenhamCricket Club.

Whilst it has been reported before, our Premier Men winning the Prestigious 2 day crickettrophy is a huge highlight and milestone for the Club. We were unbeaten in thatcompetition and with such a youthful side this augurs very well for the future of our PremierMens team.

It is also pleasing to note that under the strong leadership of Kelvin Scott, our 2A side hasbecome a very competitive unit and this depth of talent also adds to ongoing strength inour Prem team squad, whilst providing a pathway for our up and coming players.

Our Prem women continue to build in strength and were ably assisted by our two SouthAfrican stars Carolyn Esterhuizen and Bernadine Bezuidenhout. I have real confidencethat we are building a competition side here and with the players coming through theJunior ranks our future is looking good.

Overall our playing numbers throughout all grades have held steady and I trust all of youenjoyed our newly re-opened Bar. From the committees perspective it was pleasing to seeso many of you back enjoying a drink or two and special thanks to Tom Agnew , our BarManager and Matty Loose for his efforts in stocking the bar every week, and Ivan andAndrew Chisnall who were always around to keep the bar ticking, and closed upsuccessfully at the end of the day.

This season past, your committee spent considerable time and effort in restoring andrecognising our history of players who have gone before us. The refresh of our honoursboards and the re installation of our trophy cabinet are examples of this. There is furtherwork to come with photos and memorabilia being introduced back to the pavilion over thecoming months. Our facilities remain a work in progress.

As at writing this report I am informed that Council do intend to repair and returf our Parkbut still no date has been set. This is very frustrating for us as we need to extend our grasspractice facilities but are reluctant to do so when we know the Park is going to be rippedup. At least our winter has been kind to us and our blocks look in great condition afterautumn repair work so that bodes well for a good season opener, given that winter doesn’tunleash its fury in September!

You will see from our annual accounts that funding continues to be a struggle. I say thisevery year of my Presidency but funding from our local community pokie funders isbecoming increasingly difficult. Your committee is actively reviewing where else fundingcan come from.

This year in conjunction with the Junior club we will be running a raffle. All teams will beissued books and I urge you to do your bit and bring the butts back as all sold. This andother fund raising ventures will become the norm as we seek to keep subs competitivewith other clubs but maintain facilities and gear as good as any other club of our standing. In saying that, I do want to acknowledge the funders that continue to actively fund our club.Air Rescue Services.Pub Charity

I would also like to acknowledge other sponsors who generously provide sponsorship forour various eventsBanfields Meats of BeckenhamSwanndriSt Martins New World

Finally my special thanks to all our committee who really do work tirelessly to ensure ourclub is well managed and continues to grow. We simply couldn’t be the club we are withoutthem and their efforts.

MEN’S CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

The season ended on a high with the Prem Men winning their final game to win the twoday competition. Well done to the boys. The 3B Goats also made it to their 40 over finalbut went down by 5 wickets to Marist who had been the top team in the grade for most ofthe season. And the 20/20 team lost in the second to last game to miss out on the final. The Prem Women also showed continued development and this is showing on the field.

The big addition this season was having the bar back to the clubrooms and this met withmuch support from club members and opposition teams. This also was evident at thesocial events. Between the quiz nights and the Christmas party there were very goodturnouts. The prize giving was a very popular night with a huge turnout in the clubrooms.Battle for trophies was again close this season

This resulted in the bar doing a good turnover for the season as can be seen in thefinancial figures. Thanks to everyone who helped with the bar this season. And a bigthank you to everyone for the way you respected the bar and the clubrroms and to Sarahfor keeping the clubrooms clean and tidy.

Remember the bar provides much needed income for the club so where you can pleasesupport the club after the game. The clubrooms now also has a new trophy cabinet andthe honours boards that have been redone and can now be easily read. Next step will beto get the photos up on the wall.

This season started with a large influx of new players to the club increasing the number ofteams to 13. As Christmas approached we have saw the merger of the Div 1 and 2 girlsgrades bringing our team numbers back to 12. Still larger than any other club inChristchurch. With increased playing numbers this season we have been able to build upthe strength and stability of the sides. And again this season led to some competitive localderby games played in good spirit. This all looks good for next season. I would like to thank

the captains and everyone for their support of the club thru the season and their efforts toget their player stats and photos onto the website on the weekend.

The Prem women gained the services of Bernadine and Carolyn, two South African girlsthis season, and Scottish girl Ollie was back in the country and made an appearance. Thisteam, although having limited success on the field, is continuing to develop in a positiveand professional manner. This has resulted in some girls gaining Canterbury honours inunderage competitions.

The image the club presents is also growing with several sides turning out in new playingstrips this season. The latest side to go into the colour strip is the Hospital Presidents sidehaving played in whites up till now. Hopefully over the coming season we will be able tooffer an on field club playing strip and casual clothing as well.

The new club website has certainly come along way with everything you want to knowabout the club on it. And each team has there own page to add the game stats, gamereports and photos’Thanks to Ken and team for the hard work putting the websitetogether. Stay up to date with the club scene on the website and on facebook.

And finally I would like to thank the committee and the large group of helpers for there hardwork over the last year. It takes a lot of people behind the scenes to run a club this size.

PREMIER MEN TEAM REPORT

The Prems finished the season with a better than pass mark after an outstanding win inthe 2 day competition. After creditable 3rd placings in the One-day and T20s the boysstepped up big time to not only win but be unbeaten doing it.

Harry lead the charge in all respects and he had the firepower to call on from a maturingteam that is still seriously young… a great sign for the future.

Bowling was outstanding with a well balanced attack with all the options ,batting was muchimproved with Finn Loader,Dylan Goldstone, and Chad Bowes in particular making seriouscontributions however the rest of the batting line-up should not be overlooked witheveryone contributing from time to time with significant partnerships when mostneeded.Fielding however was average with close catching being an area that needs lots ofwork too often we had to get quality batsmen out twice.Having 2 quality all-rounders in theteam rounded things off nicely and gave a balance other sides couldn’t match.

Congratulations to Talor Scott who played in the New Zealand u19 team at the World Cuphis batting in the last round was a serious factor in us beating Burnside to claim the trophy. To Ryan Jones,Matt McCall,Hayden Day,Matt Brown and Lane Tutty you all played aserious part and have an exciting future with the club also to all those who stepped upwhen they were needed, a big thank you.To Kelvin and the 2A side thanks for your supportthere is a great feeling within the larger squad and it was great to see you as the clubmade a little bit of history at Burnside Park.

With the current depth of players there is no reason why we should have to wait another30 years for this trophy and the One day and T20s also await… … ..to Kevin and Ken whatyou do on the website has been a key component in players engaging with the club and toGraham thanks for your behind the scenes support I hope the Club realises just how muchtime you put in… and lastly to Chris thanks for your support. As a cricketing icon you stilllistened and considered my tactical suggestions and in a whole season we neverdisagreed on a single selection and to Tom Agnew the true “clubman”your support whenmost needed was crucial.

PREMIER WOMEN TEAM REPORT - STARS

Our women’s section is still developing strongly with the help of the committee. TheSydenham Stars had a very enjoyable season, with a strong win against the competitionwinners and many close battles. We managed three 1-Day wins and one Kirsty BondSeries win.

We were joined this season by South African’s Carolyn Esterhuizen and BernadineBezuidenhout. Carolyn was welcomed into the position of playercoach and we continuedtraining twice a week. Both players brought strength to our team. Bernadine only managedseven games due to a finger injury but ended up 5th overall in the Metro Premier Women’s1-day leaderboard for runs. Carolyn finished 2nd overall for wickets only beaten by ourown Jenna Waghorn who took 20 wickets in 11 games! Best bowling figures of animpressive 7/33. At 15 years of age Jenna is definitely one to look out for in the future andwill proudly receive the women’s bowling trophy at the Metro awards.

We have had a great mixture of girls this season, every one of them very serious abouttheir cricket. We are now in a position where girls are working hard to earn certain spots inthe team and we have girls in our Div1 team pushing for places also. This is very excitingto be a part of and can only lead to competition success in the near future. Thanks toeveryone for your encouragement and support. The girls now look forward to training withMaria Fahey over the winter.

The 2015-16 season didn’t start as well as we had hoped with some very poorperformances, not the beginning we had hoped for. That said this had to be one of themost enjoyable seasons I have been involved in over my years involved in Cricket here inChristchurch. We progressed from being the supposed easy beats to becoming one of theteams to beat near the end, with us still in with a chance to take out the 2 day competitionwith a round to go and a semi-final match in the one day competition.

To bring it back… We started the year with player number issues with some realcharacters coming into the team and contributing, none more so than Paddy Wickes. Iwondered what we had come across when he joined us but he added some well neededspirit to the team. He tried hard every time he was on the field, a bit of a golden arm whenhe bowled and tried very hard to play straight when he batted, something to work onPaddy.

Throughout the year we had a few players come and go due to other sportingcommitments and university, but when we had the team we wanted on the field we alwayscompeted against the top teams. We struggled at times to get the runs we needed to allowthe bowlers to put pressure on the opposition top orders, and when we did put them underpressure we dropped catches, a lot of them, at vital times, which let teams off the hook.

This team has the ability to win competitions and as I have mentioned there have beensimple things that let us down through the season, all of which we can fix. My advice forthe coming year is to put that extra 10% in at training, play for your mates and enjoy eachother’s company every time you walk out onto the field.

This side has players that should be aspiring to play premier cricket and the likes ofHeens, Coombsy, Selbie, Matty Day, Scotty G, Hunty and Ben Smith to name a coupleshould be aiming for this level. This comes from putting big efforts in at training and on theday. To name everyone in this report would take too much space , as everyonecontributed throughout the season. 29 players in all played for the 2a’s in the season. Thanks to the guys who stepped up from 2b’s as well through the year, always a pleasure.

To cap it off, I’m looking forward to this year as I think we will go better with a little moreeffort and really show a few of the top teams what it’s all about. Go Sydenham Rangers!!!

2B GRADE TEAM REPORT –SUDDENLY SYDENHAM

We had a decent season with Daniel Loughton and Michael Nicolson grabbing heaps ofwickets. We were up and down throughout all formats with some unlikely wins and someunfortunate losses. Martin crook top scored for us and holds the baggy green for the offseason. We enjoyed the year with plenty of social times with the other Sydenham teams.Andrew Reynolds picked up the keeping dismissals trophy for the club and Geordie Danngot the fielding dismissals trophy.

Team highlight –Mikeys catch at Edgar Nac.

We will back again for the 14th year of Suddenly Sydenham

3B TEAM REPORT –GOATS

Played 20 won 16 lost 4 finished 2nd

So close and yet so far for the Goats this year. After a few seasons kicking around in midtable this last season it all came together as we were either in first or second place allyear, culminating with us meeting Marist Harewood in the final. Unfortunately we couldn'tcome away with the grand prize but everyone should be proud of their performancesthroughout the year.

The key to this years success was twofold and simple. Firstly we had a full team eachweek and secondly everyone contributed in some shape or form. Over the last few yearswe were constantly short a player or two and come Friday we were scratching for anyonemate, sister or Labrador to fill in for us which made things challenging. We picked up Joshand Shane at the start of the season and combined with getting Amos and Tom late lastyear all of a sudden we had a squad we could rely on. We did lose Shaneand Douggy after Christmas but did get a lot more game out of Rob, Heath and the oldestGoat AC.

While everyone contributed to our seasons success we had two outstanding contributorswho led their respective fields, our Aussie imports Pat Clarke and Chris Ingram.Pat led our bowling effort with 48 wickets at an average of 9 and 3 5 wicket bags, includinga club best 8-17. Not bad when he could bowl a maximum of 8 overs a day and bowledthrough having a fractured foot before Christmas. Bowling good pace and moving it bothways he was always a handful to the opposition and someone I knew I could rely on to getthe job done if things were getting tight. Unfortunately Pat returned to Australia after theseason finished so he will be missed next year.

Chris had a great year opening the batting and managed to work his shifts pretty well thisyear so he was able to play a lot more regularly. 614 runs at 47 with two centuries was theresult and we was well worth the lower grade batting trophy. The benefits for Jake andAmos to spend a lot of time batting with Chris also showed and hopefully will help to growtheir game further.

We managed to beat everyone in the grade through the season, includinginflicting Marist Harewoods only loss of the year on them in the opening game and whilewe were sometimes not dominant we won all the tight games. Our bowling was our

strength with all 5 main bowlers picking up at least 20 wickets and 3 getting over 30. Ourfielding was also greatly improved led by Josh, Alex B and Tom in the outfield, Robssurprising slip catching when he was injured and unable to run and Amos's outstandingkeeping that he stepped up for when Douggy went overseas.

While it was disappointing to lose the final we played hard till the end and Marist weredeserving winners after only losing one game all year. A good turnout back the clubroom'scelebrated our years successes culminating with a late night in town. The team spirit wasgreat all year and while that's sometimes easier to achieve while your winning the effortswhen things weren't always going our way were quite noticeable.

Special thanks to Alex Hewson for his work organizing our new playing shirts andeveryone who attended our fund raising night.

The new club website was fantastic, easy to use and detailed match reports, statistics andphotographs are available for most games, well done Ken.

Thanks to everyone who played this year, especially those that helped out when we wereshort and looking forward to another great year ahead.

3C TEAM REPORT - CARDINALS

2015/2016 season review

The 2015/16 Cardinals season started off at Centennial Park under the captaincy of MattyAllen. While a few lads notched up their Cardinals debuts, it wouldn't be a result to savour.4 wickets in the first innings to Stokesy but one of their lower order batsmen proved quitehandy with the bat to spur them to 168. In reply, only the big hitting of #11 Larts spared usfrom a heavier defeat than the 65 runs we eventually lost by.

HONOURABLE MENTION, FIELDING: JIMMYA bit awkward having to write this one up first. First wicket of the Cardinals season was adirect hit from deep-ish cover. Over a beer I'd say turn & let it go before I even lookedwhere I was throwing, hitting the bottom of the 1 visible stump at bowlers' end...so, it wasan utter fluke. But it was my first touch of the ball as a Cardinal, so I was pretty stoked.

Week 2 was the first of what would be five games vs Sydenham All Stars. Blazers werehanded out, fines were flying thick + fast and the BBQ cranked up. Opening the batting,Larts and Kez piled on the runs as we eventually finished on 177/8. It was Larts again, thistime with Livo who combined to decimate the top order to the tune of 32/8. First win of theseason.

HONOURABLE MENTION, BATTING: LARTS97. Made a conservative start with Kez before clicking into a higher gear. No bowler wassafe, particularly one unlucky spinner. He was dispatched into the adjacent game soregularly that the neighbouring fielders were more concerned with their safety from ourgame than theirs. Unselfishly caught on the boundary trying to keep up the scoring rate.

HONOURABLE MENTION, BOWLING: LARTSRecollection was split on whether this was a 4for or a 5for. But in either case, it was a topspell with accuracy and wickets in the very dying stages of 8 long overs. Of particular funwas watching Blocky McBlockface go completely into his shell after trying to attack earlyon and being made to look stupid.

Week 3 vs winless Addington at Barrington. A cold day + long boundaries + freshly cutgrass makes for a shit day's cricket. Kez proved the linchpin with the bat on a day whenruns were hard to come by. A total of 4 boundaries were hit, as even the BBQ struggled toget going in the cold. Highlights included Spook's reverse sweep portfolio and Flynnybeing caught on the boundary by a diving hairy Jesus, who in true Joe Dirt style neverlooked like dropping his ciggy. Just for good measure Kez took 6for with the ball. All out for78 in reply to 115.

HONOURABLE MENTION, BATTING: KEZPrepared to do the hard work on a low scoring pitch, Kez toiled while others came andwent at the other end. Being run out by bowler deflection was about the only way hewould've gotten out, but by that stage from opening the innings he had seen the teamthrough to 100/9

HONOURABLE MENTION, BOWLING: KEZFor the second week in a row a victory was built around a classy all-round performance. There's not much that can be said other than that sustained pressure created mistakes

from the batsmen, particularly Bowled & LBWs. It was the consistent kind of bowling weneeded more often through the season

Game 4 vs winless Merivale Pap at Sommerfield. New Cardinals were quickly brought upto speed on the history between these two teams, and at 4/16 there were some glumfaces. #s 6 & 7 Camo and Smithson were together before drinks but from there on it wasall Cardinals. Skipper Cam was particularly brutal as we piled on 204/7. LBWs were almostimpossible against these pricks, but with breakthroughs at regular intervals we werealways comfortable. So much so that Aaron Flynn made a memorable debut at the bowlingcrease. All out for 96.

HONOURABLE MENTION, BATTING: CAM5 down at drinks, this innings was beautifully paced. Once Camo had seen off the last ofthe 3 main bowlers, he and Smitty were able to launch into the remaining 16 overs of filler. Not a chanceless innings, but one that wrestled back the momentum and saw us score160 after drinks.

Game 5, top of the table clash at New Brighton. Having won 3 on the bounce, confidencewas high against a team with a strong top order but a long tail. First do-bro stitch-updummy spit of the year went to Kez, having travelled to make himself available for thegame. Cam and Kez played well to recover from 22/4 and set the platform for adefendable 142/7. A blistering start was reined in by Jimmy, Larts, Kez and Stokesy whoall bowled 8 on the trot in a chase that went to the last over. Tempers flared amid LBWdiscussions and the now famous "Lego man" sledge was coined, but the team who wouldbe eventual Champions squeezed home by 2 wickets.

Game 6 vs Prebbleton at Sydenham. With Kez on crutches and Livo having struggled toget 11 together we batted first and were immediately in strife as unqualified batsmen foundthemselves sprinkled in the top order once again. Solid contributions through the middle(including a Spook reverse sweep 6) and another rearguard from Larts got us to 177. Bythe time we got rid of their aggressive opening batsmen, we were always chasing a gamewhere the oven mitts changed owners repeatedly and we even managed to concede a 7(yes, coming back for the 3rd and we conceded 4 overthrows)

By this stage: Won 3, Lost 3.

Game 7 vs Southern Districts. Unfortunately I wasn't here for this game to offer a first-handaccount, but I think it went on the 'Less said, the better' pile. Southern were onlycompetitive if Darcy was there, which he was, so he scored about 220 of their 224 and wewere all out for 69. At least we looked slick in excellent new uniforms from MaximusApparel.

Game 8. Again, not a game I was at so I'm paraphrasing the weekly report. A batter-friendly ground greeted Cardinals and Marist. These guys had tipped us up in the firstround and would eventually go on to be beaten in the Grand Final. On this day they scored238 with Harry picking up 4for. In reply, solid contributions makes for comfortable reading. The bulk of the damage done with Stokesy and Camo each finishing with unbeaten 50s.Cardinals win by 7 wickets.

Won 4, Lost 4.

On Friday the 4th of December the Sydney Thunder came to town, with many of theCardinals being generously hosted by Canterbury Glass and kicking on afterwards. Nextday, the pre-match looked like an opening scene out of Saving Private Ryan. We all knowwhat happened to Camo, and on that searing hot day we managed to get spanked by AllStars who had transformed into a Kolkota Invitational XI. Having now lost 4 of our last 5,we had now slipped back into a 4-way tie for 4th.

Game 10 vs Addington @ Pioneer saw a captaincy debut for Jimmy. Mutiny was soon inthe air when we chose to field first, despite only having 8 (including a guy who didn't speakEnglish, a 14 year old, and his dad who agreed to field "just briefly until the others arrive".He fielded 40 overs). Four wickets before drinks to the stand in skipper, then when Taylorarrived he and Stokesy rattled the tail. Chasing 148, we were 30/4, then got to 120/6before being all out 125.

HONOURABLE MENTION, FIELDING: STOKESDuring the prizegiving booze up when I was writing these things down, I had "Stokes @Pioneer" but haven't been able to work out which game...It must've been for this one. Weonly started with 5 actual fielders because one fill-in wasn't terribly mobile so he waspermanently posted under the shade of the trees on the boundary. Their opening batsmanthrashed at one and Stokesy at gully clawed in a bit of a screamer. Diving left, it wasbasically past him by the time he latched on. There was another sharp catch to Shane afew overs later - probably one of our better fielding days.

Game 11Bowling first against M/Pap. They had 1 win from 10 and it was time to inflict someHawaiin-shirt-themed pain on these fools. Top fielding from Stokesy and Smittypunctuated some excellent bowling through the entire innings. Livo and Harry got ourinnings under way, supported by plenty of lads on the boundary and backed up by DJFrenchy. Smitty was unstoppable with the bat, and Larts' post on Facebook afterwardssummed it up: "Billy the Bogan 80*...fuck off Merivale Papanui you cheating bastards".Christmas party chaos ensued - Strawpedos, Flynny winning a sprint and taking a trophythat wasn't up for grabs, Strawpedos, freestyle cricket rap, and more Strawpedos

HONOURABLE MENTION, FIELDING: SMITHSONThere's nothing better than snaring a classic catch in front of your mates, specially if it's offyour own bowling. Smitty managed to do just that, running back towards mid-off and divingto take a catch that was coming down from behind his shoulder. An important grab in thecontext of the match.

HONOURABLE MENTION, FIELDING: STOKESWe didn't have to wait long to get another stunner in the field. A few overs after Smitty'seffort, Stokesy took a one-handed screamer running forward to take diving catch off a bigtop edge. (I can't really add much because I had the worst seat in the house for this one)

Larts led the troops out for Game 1 of 2016, against runaway leaders New Brighton and itwas a good old low-scoring thriller. Smitty picked up where he left off, scoring 19 of theteam's 91, then knocked over a valuable top order scalp first ball. By the time we got intotheir tail we had very few runs left to defend. In the end Stokesy picked up 4 wickets,Benny 3, and Krefty was all over them, as we had pushed the eventual Champions again. This time they limped home with just 1 wicket to spare.

Round 13Piss off, the rain.By the way we're 6th equal at this stage, just 1 win behind Addington & Marist who are 4thequal, and 1 further win back from Prebbleton & Southern who are tied for 2nd.

I'm not sure about this 'split the table into 2' crap, but Round 14 was to be the last week ofthe full draw. Beat the 2nd placed Southern team (who had pumped us last time out) tostay alive for top honours. And we frickin smoked em. Livo's 69 (runs) was immense, as hedominated in the sweltering heat while others made useful contributions around him.Wickets to Magilla and Livo saw us win by 103.

HONOURABLE MENTION, BATTING: LIVOI wasn't there for this game but this innings received many nominations for the battingaccolades. Given the results of matches against Southern either side of this one, it must'vebeen particularly satisfying for us to bat these guys out of the contest.

MAKING THE PLAYOFFSSome cracking games that round - good luck to anyone who might've tried to pick the finaltop 4 before that weekend. 1st place New Brighton were all out for 94 and All Stars (7th)chased it down with one wicket in hand. 2nd place Prebbleton were chasing Marist's (4thplace) 100-all out, but were bowled out for 99. And Addington blasted a massive 297against Merivale-'we cheat but we still suck'-Papanui.

4 teams had finished in 2nd equal with 7 wins. So positions 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th were spliton runrate.Cardinals and All Stars were just 1 win further back, tied for 6th.

Southern Districts had been 2nd pretty much all year. So us pumping them in that lastgame not only allowed 3 other teams to draw level with them, our margin of victory isprobably what bumped them down to worst of those 4 tied teams and consigned them tothe bottom 4.

In the 'other pointless statistics' file, half way through the round robin Addington (with HairyJesus and Bubbles) were second last, with 1 win out of 6 games. They finished the roundrobin in 2nd place, having won 6 out of their last 7.

Bottom 4 week 1If playing the in the nose-bleed section of the comp wasn't enough, cricket reached that"f**k this game" status when we got spanked by Merivale Pap. Manny and Analbait pickedup 3 wickets each but in reply to their 105 we were all out for 51. Moving on.

HONOURABLE MENTION, BOWLING: AB.No bloody idea what he did on this day, but AB's 3 wickets was one of the most popularnominations of the evening. No doubt a superhuman Murali-Lillee mix of pace and flight, swing and spin.

Week 2 vs the All Stars, season ledger at 1 game apiece. Batting first, a rollercoasterinnings featured Frenchy getting off the mark as a career Cardinal as we made it to 135. Inreply, their chase at one stage lost 7/7 in getting to 59/9. By then the game was over andwe lead the season head to head 2-1. Three entries in the 'best of the season' nominationsfrom this game...

HONOURABLE MENTION, BATTING:STOKESY & LIVOWe were in the crap at 15/5 when these two got together. An excellent partnership got usthrough to a defendable score.

HONOURABLE MENTION, BOWLING: LARTSLarts led the destruction with the ball, snaring 5for to leave the chase pretty well stuffed.

HONOURABLE MENTION, FIELDING: BKSommerfield park was host to one of the great one-handed catches by BK. At mid-off,launching to his right, he stuck the mitt out and stopped a bullet. Catch of the season.

Week 3 vs Southern. The whispers about the sacred Do-Bro batting order had beengaining recent momentum, and losing the 'top' 3 before a single run had been scored...wellthat just made things worse. Stokesy again found himself on cleanup duty, fighting hisinner demons which told him to "smash it!". With Camo 53* and Stokes out in the last overfor 41, they had given us 150 to defend. It was nowhere near enough. The only twowickets to fall came late to Camo and Pete O'Shea, in an 8 wicket mauling.

Week 4 saw us bowl first in the 35+ degree heat against Merivale Pap at Waltham Park.Stokesy picked up 3 but we never really got on top + late overs fatigue leaked a few runs. The second innings...what can be said. Ronnie took 5 wickets for just 2 runs (and 1 ofthose 2 runs was a wide). Moving on

Week 5 against the All Stars...what an odd game that was. Ground relocation, CroweMemorial Headbands, a guy conceding 3 runs without bowling a ball. Chris, Taylor (4wickets) and Manny (3 wickets) turned in the combined bowling performance of theseason to suffocate any thoughts of setting a remotely competitive total. Some sharp takesfrom Chris and Stokesy (again in the gully) lead to a one-man haystack from Larts.Chasing only 81 we got there 6 down. 3-1 against All Stars this season

HONOURABLE MENTION, BOWLING: TAYLOR.Spearheading the middle-overs squeeze was Taylor. From his 8 overs there were only 2scoring shots as the batsmen were put through a barrage of short balls and swing.

During that game but somewhere across town, Ronnie was at it again. Taking a hattrickagainst Southern. His Merivale Pap team that only won 2 from 13 during round robin, hadsuddenly nailed 5 from 5.

Bottom 4, week 6 against Southern. We needed to win to make the 5th place playoffagainst the waiting Merivale Pap. We removed Darcy before he caused too much damage, but some arsey batting all the way through saw them slap their way to 133. Larts andCamo had things under control, 1 down, until a middle order collapse turned into a totalorder collapse and we were bundled out for 110.

7th - 8th playoff against All Stars. With one team intent with ending the season by writingthemselves off, and the other more concerned with team photos, this game was probablyonly going to go one way. Kez returned to play on one leg and with Stokesy and Rossymaking good runs. 151 should've been enough but a flattening pitch and an unhelpful 4-piece ball meant they got home with 3 wickets in hand, to put the season to anunceremonious end.

Round Robin6 out of 13

Bottom Four2 out of 6

Playoff0 out of 1

Results didn't look too flash, but a pretty enjoyable season of Cardinals cricket all thesame. Some more consistent starters next season will certainly have us back in the hunt,no doubt with a beer in hand.

Cardinals would like to thanks their fantastic sponsors Canterbury Glass and MaximusApparel

3C TEAM REPORT –ALLSTARS

The Sydenham Allstars came back for another season, but this time in the 3C Grade. Atthe end of the 2014-2015 season we farewelled many of our long serving team members;John Hawes, Joe Potter-Butler, Sam Averis and number one fan Doug Smith. These teammembers would be hard to replace however with the help of AC recruiting players, wequickly filled our ranks.

The season was a mixed bag for the Allstars. We had some great bowling performancesfrom Sudhakar, Hatcher and Atherton however inconsistency with the bat caused many adefeat. Sudhakar was a great find for the Allstars. His bowling was not quick however hisvariety in length, speed and turn caused headaches for the batsman. Sudhakarmesmerized batters in two stunning performances capturing 7-24 and 5-7. Hatcher was astandout with the ball all season capturing 36 wickets with his left arm fast medium pace.He also showcased his batting skill at the top of the order.

This season we also welcomed Christopher Reeve from the UK. Christopher wasoutstanding as wicketkeeper, taking most opportunities that went his way. He finished theseason with 13 stunning catches and he saved many runs for the Allstars.

Brad Walters was the leading run scorer for the Allstars with his highest score being 67 notout. He was able to dismantle most bowling attacks, however if he did not get his eye inquickly, he could be making the long walk back.

This season we welcomed Krishna, however we also had to farewell him as he departed togo to Hamilton. Krishna was an outstanding leader in the team and his positive attitudewas great for team moral. We wish him all the best in Hamilton, but thank him for his timein the Allstars this season.

The year had mixed results, however we will be back for another season.

I would like to thank the Sydenham Cricket Club for all that they have done this season. The website and communication from the club has been outstanding. I would also like toadd a special mention to AC, who is always our port of call and is able to give advice andassistance when required.

An outstanding result for our club, the team consisted of some verytalented young men, whose dedication and commitment certainly paid off. Thanks toRichard Jones who worked endless hours correcting technique and assisting these boys toachieve goals and keep them motivated for game. Plenty of bowling options and goodattitude on field made my job as captain a lot easy.

Trophy winner was Mayank Patel for his outstanding performance as all rounder winningplayer of the year for hitting 437 runs and taking 21 wickets. Pavneet Singh Dhanjal hit topscore 54 vs Burnside and Kesava Achanta having 25 wickets highest by any player in theteam.

Our team is diverse with majority of Indian descent. Every team player full of motivationand energy who played very important role in the team to do their best to keep teamwinning and having our goal in their mind to represent our Sydenham Club as well as topromote our people by adding the cultural component.

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT –CARDINALS

Presidents Cardinals started the 2015/16 season determined better the previous season’sfifth place, make the Presidents grade top four and scrap hard from there.

After an indifferent start to the season, narrowly scraping home over ES Blue in the firstgame with a 50 run last wicket partnership, Cardinals threw down a marker at the firstPresidents Grade Day, chasing St Albans’235 in a box-office finish watched by most ofthe other players in the grade. Fielding first, we hadn’t made it easy on ourselves, droppinga slogging and lucky Pierre Flavell three times during one David Fleming over – much toDave’s evident and flamboyant frustration. Our resident opener Brendon Laughton leadthe charge to victory in the second stanza, posting an equally hard hitting 97 keeping usup with the chase. Some clean hitting from a wagging tail late in the piece saw theCardinals enter the last over with seven runs required to win and the form ‘batsman’at thenon-strikers end. A jammy leg bye off the first ball set up the finale. Pierre Flavell testedthe skippers nerve lobbing up a slow floater. Challenge accepted, and the last act of thegame was the fielder picking up the ball more than 150 metres away at cow corner, bringing the Cardinals home with four balls to spare.

That result was punctuated shortly after with a five wicket drubbing of Burnside at home - afavour they returned on Syds 3 when Cardinals was struggling to field a competitive line-up in the absence of several regulars.

Another highlight was a last over victory against a touring Occidental Cricketers side onSydenham 1 –a line-up that included some former Australian and West Indian age groupinternationals. It was a stinking hot Friday that demanded two drinks breaks an innings, and Geoff Miller came out of (way too early) retirement especially for the match, andshowed plenty of class. In a classic one day finish, some powerful late hitting by DaveFleming and Waza Guy delivered a tense victory from the jaws of defeat.

In a team that on some days could have said it fielded 10 handy bowlers, a particularhighlight was the return of the mercurial Bert Walker to the bowling crease after severalyears’self-imposed absence (Bert will likely read that as ‘abstinence’), which we will seemore of next season. Anthony Wild, a former paceman of some venom reinvented as apunishing opening batsman, also saw increasing employment as a handy partnership-breaking medium pace bowler. Wildy provided the most sickening moment of the seasonwhen he fractured his cheekbone and eye socket top edging a ball into his face at DentonPark. The team was thrilled to have him back later in the season - with a helmet. A specialmention must be made of the Hornby side, who showed great sportsmanship and genuineconcern for Wildy after the accident. Another big top order knock from Craig Borcoski andsome lower order agricultural hitting got the team home after Wildy retired hurt.

As they always do, key players contributed at vital times in a variety of ways. In a teamwith so many summers of cricket under its belt, it’s fair to say everyone had a crack atsetting the field at some time or other, often at the same time! Laughts and Wildy are stillthe most respected and threatening opening combo in the grade. Ewen Spence proved auseful and composed alternative when either Laughts or Wildy were unavailable. MattLoose was employed to varying extents at first slip – sometimes never fielding a ball, butoften punishing with the bat and destructive with the ball. Brenden Winder captained well– assisted as always by plenty of constructive feedback –and had a fantastic season. He

was always near the top of the club’s run aggregate and bowled from the shoulder withsome real zip.

Dave Fleming again topped the wicket-taking stats, batted from 1-11 whenever asked andstopped time while he set his field. Craig Borcoski batted and bowled superbly whereverand whenever asked, and inevitably delivered runs and wickets. Jules Van Dyk andFergus Smith toiled hard with ball in hand, taking key wickets and bowling the tough oversagainst set batsmen. So too did Phil Walker, who always contributed well in the middleovers with bat and ball. Jase Millar added enthusiasm and plenty effort and pace butplayed too few games as always. Tim Murdoch was his mercurial self, looking like a livecoaching manual at the crease and always looking like he was about to go ontoanother big score. If not contributing as a player as often as we’d like, Kevin Congdonlurked on the boundary all summer in support and was never short of insight and feedback–especially on Laughts’tendency to walk easy singles.

Waza Guy, more than menacing with the ball, was increasingly handy with the bat, andproved himself handy with the keepers gloves too, also organising a team tee-shirt andsweatshirt. He was deservedly the Cardinal’s team player’s player of the season. JKbatted and bowled his heart out, and found himself right in the mix at the business end oftight games. Phil Barclay contributed on and off the field but theteam especially appreciated the weekly post match reports, keeping them and formerplayers in touch with proceedings throughout the season.

Phil also snared the catch of the season, dropping a few jaws in the process “diving like afelled tree”to his right at short backward square to take a two-handed effort inches off thedeck. His post-catch Andrew Flintoff Ashes-like celebration was a sight to behold. Anotherplayer’s assertion that if he had taken a similar catch he’d be celebrating naked with a treemay have been a factor in that player not playing another game. Phil’s catch was the firstdismissal in a five-for, the only one of the season.

Jeremy Brown delivered easily the bowling spell of the season, taking advantage of afavourable late afternoon nor-wester cutting across Sydenham 1 to create countless edgesfor up to six players fielding at either slips or gully, and at times a 9-1 field. He finishedeight overs for 4-32 and had several chances spilled and others drop just short of eagerhands. Ken Julian was injured for the majority of the season – but the good club man hehis –attended many games and rehabbed diligently for a welcome return next season.

The team enjoyed the company of a few players we hope to see more of next season.Craig Frampton, Brett Dunn and Paul Bennett all had runs at various times, making usefulcontributions and fitting in well.

Always tidy in the field, the team sometimes lacked penetration in the bowling department, and let itself down at times with unexpected batting collapses. The unavailability of keyplayers meant it also struggled to field a strong line-up in some vital clashes. Whateverteam was fielded, it enjoyed its cricket, and scrapped hard in the good natured spiritCardinals want to be known for.

Ultimately, the team achieved its goal of making the top four, before suffering consecutivedefeats to Easts Gold, Merivale-Papanui and Burnside. It is already looking forward to the2016/17 season.Brendon Winder, Captain

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT –HOSPITAL

If Baldrick of Black Ader fame were to write a poem about our season it would probably gosomething like this… …

Lost, lost, lost, lostLost, lost, lost,Lost, lost, lost, just lost,Lost, lost, lost.Lost, lost, lost

Just lost… … ..again,Lost, lost, LOST!LOST, lost,Only just lost.

Lost and lost.

However, someone said to me once, defeat was character building and from now on Iwant to talk about those marvellous characters in the Hospital team I have had theprivilege of playing cricket with and how the team has built and bonded together in the pastseason.

The first game of the season against Old Boys on the 3rd of October started our season offwith a lot of hope and anticipation for a much improved season from the previous onewhere the afore mention verses above applied even more emphatically.

The number problems from the previous season and frequent defaults (Sorry about thatGraeme) had gone, with recruitment and retention of enough players that we played thewhole season without any defaults, a full team every game and quiet often with the back-up of a twelfth man.

This was due to the number of characters who all did their bit to keep the Hospital CricketTeam playing in the Presidents Grade, where it has been since the 1930’s.

First, I like to mention Aidan Hegarty aka (Santa) for his efforts to acquire a new, shall wesay, colourful kit for the team, which was a highlight moment for the team when he availedit at the team Christmas piss up… .. I mean barbeque.

Immediately some of the team decided to put their allocated uniform on and keep it on thewhole night. This was a good thing for at least two members of the team (you know whoyou are) who left to wander the streets in the early hours of Sunday morning somewhat theworse for wear, but safely illuminated.

Next person to mention is Mark Crawford who has been quietly i\nfluential in maintainingthe bonds between the team, the club and of course the link to the Hospital and without hisinput the team would have folded.

Another important figure in maintaining the team spirit has been Tony Dannenburg,(Aka Team Talk Tony) Aside of him being our best bat and player of the season, hisknowledge of the game and his previous experience as a Captain has been a greatinfluence on the less experienced players and myself as a first time Captain. His timely pep talks and advice out on the field has generated his humorous but respectednickname.

I would like to also acknowledge the contribution of Gareth Thomas, not only for bringingsome much needed talent into the team like Ash McCormack (opening strike bowler) TomVedder (off spin and bat) and Marnus Van Zyl (all rounder), but also for his dedication inorganising and coordinating net practice. (Yes, we do practice.)

Although cricket is a game that can be dominated in its analysis by statistics.Disraeli (Google him Frank, we know you love the internet) said about that… . there werethree kinds of lies, ‘lies, damned lies and statistics.’In other words, statistics only tell partof the story of our team’s exploits this past season.

To play cricket, with a bunch of friends, mates and cone kicking nut cases on a Saturdayafternoon, striving for that elusive win and the promise of the party of all parties has beenpersonally an enriching experience for me and I thank all the players for all there effortsboth on and off the field. If I haven’t mentioned you by name here my apologies, you haveall been central to my thoughts and feelings while writing this summary and I am proud tocall each and every one of you a teammate.

To our opponents, especially the Cardinals and Sydenham Cricket and all the marvellouspeople that run the club and Metro Cricket, I would like to sincerely thank them for also

making playing the game of cricket, a game where you can say at the end of it ‘I gave mybest and then take the result what ever it is.’

Finally, here’s to next summer and continuation to the fun, the camaraderie and goodtimes ahead.

WOMEN’S DIV 1 TEAM REPORT

Captain, Olive Topping, balances leading our competitive group of young ladies and theteam goal of playing enjoyable cricket and supporting each other while growing friendshipsand having fun.

This can be a challenging task for our young captain; overall I think a job well done byOlive and the team on and off the park SCC is proud of you all. Now if I can only get you towrite the team reports LOL.

With an average start to the season, the girls were able to put it behind them and resultsstarted coming our way , making us a stronger team and finishing in 3rd place in adominating confidant batting display v STA . If we could have added another week ofcricket we would have challenged for a place in the final.

We are looking for a stronger start this season. We also welcome some new names to thesquad. The div 1 girls also had the option to take on extra training with Maria over thewinter which was a fantastic opportunity to get 121 coaching from a quality player andcoach. Jodie Dean moves into prems for this season and we also have one or two othergirls looking to make this move in the next few seasons. Good luck Jodie. Thanks to theplayers and fan club for their support each week, it is much appreciated. I know thisseason will be another entertaining one for you all, fun along with effort make for goodcricket.

SYDENHAM JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB

What a fantastic season we have had with many of our junior teams being at the top of theladder in the point’s table, and our year 7 Premier team winning the shield, this is a greataccomplishment second year in a row for the Sydenham Juniors, congrats to the boys andMichael Owens and Greg Manson for their coaching efforts.

We have many players selected for representative teams both in the girls and boyscompetition and we were well represented in the South Island Primary Schools tournamentteams, both in girls and the boys, a wonderful group of young ladies and young men who Iknow will have a great future ahead in cricket.

A huge thank you to Emma Scarf our Head of Coaching, who with the support of AshleyCloake (Under 21 Canterbury Rep) and Maria Fahey (ex White Fern) ran our SuperstarAcademy which was a huge success, as we had large numbers of boys and girls attendthis programme. These young Superstars are the future of the junior and senior club. Thehardball clinics run by Emma and her team, were supported by many of our cricketers andhave played an instrumental role in being so successful in the competitions.

We continue to work with our Sydenham Club and thank Graham and his team for theongoing support, guidance and advice we receive and look forward to continuing thisrelationship next season.

We had 35 teams all supported by dedicated, committed and enthusiastic volunteerparents and/or volunteer coaches. Thank you to Isla McKenzie, Ross Kiddie who againvolunteered their time to assist two of our Sydenham Junior teams, and also to KevinMcGowan for also volunteering his time to provide assistance when required to fill thegaps of absent coaches. Without the support of all of our volunteer coaches and extraspecial volunteer team we couldn’t operate as a club, so we thank you for all your efforts.

Our committee continued to work hard for our cricket community and ran a very successfulQuiz Night fundraising; we thank all of our local businesses that contributed to our prizes.Thank you to Kay Male our Vice Convenor for all the time, dedication and commitment sheput into this event and also for the many hours of service that the club received from her.Kay not only put in hours to the Vice Convenors role but also picked up many tasks of thesecretary role this year, and we were all very grateful. Thanks to Mike and Linda for theirongoing support to the committee and a very special thanks to Kerry Constable for hisoutstanding long service on the committee. Kerry was a recipient of an award for his longservice to junior cricket from our Sydenham Seniors and we are so appreciative of his timeand commitment he puts into the juniors.

I wish you all a very enjoyable winter season for your respective codes and for others whochose not to participate in a winter code, enjoy a welldeserved break. Look forward toseeing you all in the new season.
