These are all marsupials. There are lots of marsupials in Australia. Marsupials are unique because they give birth to teeny tiny babies that crawl into the mother’s pouch on her tummy where they grow. A baby marsupial is called a joey. A baby kangaroo is the size of a bean when it is born.

These guys look pretty cute! This is a Quokka

Quokkas are nocturnal marsupials. They’re some of the smallest members of the big foot family, which also includes kangaroos and wallabies. The quokka lives in swamps and scrublands, tunneling through the brush to create shelters and hideouts and emerging at night to find food.

There are two mammals that lay eggs that live in Australia. The platypus and the echidna. A baby echidna is called a puggle. How cute!

A platypus is also very interesting because it has a beak and webbed feet like a bird. A mother platypus feeds her baby milk.

Have a look online to see if you can find out about any other interesting Australian animals.

Expressive Arts and Design

Aboriginal Dot Art Be inspired by these beautiful aboriginal dot paintings and have a go at making your own. First draw an Australian animal, then fill space by adding lots of little dots. You could use your finger or a cotton bud works really well too.

Class Photo We don’t want to miss out on having a class photo this year!!! Please can you send me a headshot of your child and I’ll collate them all into a nice picture. If you want to, your child can write a special message for the class and hold this up, or maybe just draw a rainbow. If it’s easier just to send a photo, that’s fine too. I’ll leave it to you.

Loving Humayra’s photo. Well done Humayra!

Myself or Lisa B will phone to check in with those not back at school. Please remember you’re welcome to email if there is anything you need help with. Love Beth
