Prof Y K Bhushan gave a brief outlineabout boundaryless organizations and how JackWelch, Chairman, GE had created thisorganizational structure to foster innovation andcreativity among large organizations that fall preyto bureaucratic functioning and sluggishness.

The guest of honour, Mr Tarun Katial, CEO,Reliance Broadcast Network Ltd, gave a strongspeech about how working with the people that

we are comfortable with creates informal rulesposes danger to the concept of boundarylessorganization. A boundary-less organizationcreates a sense of urgency to change and peoplefrom diverse backgrounds are the ideal employeesto work in such an organization. Mr Katial furtheradvised the audience to “Go beyond the limitsbecause on the other side is freedom”.

The keynote speaker for the event was Mr ManishKarlekar, Sr Director, Data & Analytics, GE,Bengaluru. Mr Karlekar's speech was an apt one ashe represented the organization which started theconcept of boundary less organization. GEemploys more than 350,000 employees in 175countries across the world and even after 124years in existence, employees still feel it is likeworking in a startup. The ConceptThe concept of emotional intelligence (EI) hasbecome a very hot topic of psychological research inrecent years, especially with regards to how it affectstoday's workforce. Businesses are essentiallypeople, so anything that impacts the effectiveness ofpeople's minds also impacts the businesses they runor work for. The concept ofEI not only applies to business but also to thebusiness schools. With this context in mind we at DrV N Bedekar are organizing a One day intensiveworkshop on Emotional Intelligence.

countries.” He reflected on the lost years of India,

the period between 1965 and 1991. He stressed the

importance for a 'liberalised, market-driven,

industry-linked' educational system. He lamented

that the Indian educational system was one of the

least global. He listed some of the initiatives XIME

had taken to mould it's students into truly global

citizens: a compulsory foreign-language to be

opted by all students, 3-4 international Professors

on campus teaching 3-4 full courses, a compulsory

international travel and 2-4 weeks of 'Cultural

Immersion' through partnerships with other

international B-Schools. He also drew attention to

the pivotal role played by the Association of BRICS

Business Schools (ABBS) in helping build a global

perspective among Management students. Prof Joe

Philip then released the Conference Proceedings.

Dr R Rudramoorthy, Principal, PSG College of

Technology received the first copy. Dr R

Nandagopal then presented mementos to Prof Joe

Philip and Dr BV Sangvikar. Dr R Deepa,

Coordinator, PSG Center for Academic Research

and Excellence proposed the Vote of Thanks.

Keynote Session – January 6, 2017

On January 6, 2017, with the AIMS Conference

coinciding with the Pongal Celebrations on

campus, decorated clay pots, sugarcanes and

turmeric, students in traditional Tamil-outfits and

colourful rangolis welcomed the delegates. The

Keynote session on “Technology in Management

Education” was chaired by Dr Chandrahauns R

eNewsletter Vol.2, No.3, March 2017

Chavan, Director, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of

Management Studies. The first keynote address

was by Mr A Thothatrhi Raman, International

Accreditation Advisor and Chairman, SEAA Trust

and Senior Business Journalist. In today's age of

convergence, he said, “A global perspective is

inevitable. Either you go to the world; or the world

comes to you”. He expressed concern over the

lack of data-crunching, an inward-looking

empirical-research on part of the management

institutions, which in-turn led to a dis-connect in

perspectives between Management education

practitioners and policy-makers. He stressed the

importance of faculty development and a strong

faculty-industry connects. He also mentioned

some of the steps Management institutions

needed to undertake to go global: accreditation

by leading global players (AACSB, EQUIS,

AMBA), using GMAT for admissions, insisting on

a minimum 2-6 years of average industry

experience for students seeking admissions,

including a strong executive MBA program

besides PGDM/MBA, having professionals on

their boards, larger student capacities, a faculty-

student ratio of 1:5, having faculty represented on

corporate boards, faculty with strong industry-

experience and a good PhD, making their

programs 100% residential and self-regulation.

The next speaker was Mr Venkatesh

Hariharan, Director, Fintech at Indian Software

Product Industry Round Table (iSPIRT). iSPIRT is a

think-tank focussed on building a software

product industry in India. He spoke about how

Aadhar had become the world's fastest growing

digital identity program, even growing faster than

Android. He pointed out that the bulk of India's

software product demand can never be fulfilled

by the Silicon Valley owing to the huge disparity

in disposable incomes of the people of the two

countries. For India, it was essential to build

software solutions with the highest possible reach

at the lowest possible costs. It was necessary to

create an architecture of financial inclusion. And

this required collaboration among policy-makers,

regulators, technology-gurus, start-ups,

implementation agencies and banks. Another

project in the offing was the creation of digital

lockers for safe keeping of academic and financial

records for all citizens. In a country with a very-high

smart-phone penetration of more than 25 million per

quarter, he hoped that the faculty and students of

Management Education will take it upon themselves

to stay abreast and acquaint themselves with

technology-driven innovations like MOOCs, m-

Learning, smart-boards, cloud-technology and

virtual-reality that can transform the educational

landscape of India.

Panel Discussion - “Re-engineering Management

Education to cater to the emerging business and

technology innovations in India and abroad”.

The eminent panelists included Mr Ramesh Prabha,

Chairman, Galaxy Institute of Management,

Chennai; Dr M J Xavier, Vice Chancellor, Karunya

University, Mr Shankar Vanavarayar, Vice

Correspondent, Kumaraguru College of Technology

and Mr Senthil Ganesh, Managing Trustee, RVS

Group. The discussion was moderated by Mr

Ramesh Prabha. It was a very insightful discussion

and covered various topics such as the post-

liberalisation-scenario in education, the idea of

social-branding around education, the changing

role of faculty, concept of disaggregation, criteria of

student-selection for admissions, specialisations,

importance of technology-adoption, research,

family-business and MBA-education, online

education and the power of analytics and so on. The

panelists felt that it was quite unnecessary and

difficult to homogenise higher education, especially

in a country as diverse as India. They felt that the

management curriculum had to be very context-

sensitive. 'Different B-schools for different contexts'

was a better idea. The ethos of Management

education primarily catering to, say, Coimbatore and

its adjoining districts with majority of its student-

populace from family-run businesses is very different

from the number-savvy, corporate-oriented crowd at

IIMs. But this, sometimes paved the way for lack of

coherence in syllabus-design because it's a

hotchpotch taken from here and there, from the

west, the IIMs, the local-businesses and so on. The

eNewsletter Vol.2, No.3, March 2017

lack of credible and transparent rankings was a

major concern, which in-turn led to legacy taking

the centre-stage. The panelists were also

concerned that the field of Management

education lacked self-regulation.

Mr Senthil pointed out that the goal of higher

education the world-over was 3-fold: equity,

access and quality. India had more or less fulfilled

the first two goals, but quality was still a far-cry.

The importance of skilling our youth could not be

overstressed. It was indeed shocking to know that

India, a country with a population of over 1.25

billion and with a huge demographic dividend

had to import JCB drivers from countries like Peru.

No wonder then that plumbers today earn more

than our engineers! Strict regulation of the

Management institutes was also a major concern,

because the regulators tend to have a very myopic

view of who can be professors and who cannot.

This kind of a view made it difficult for the people

in the industry to take up teaching. Holistic

grooming for faculty to become more socially-

responsible and better individuals was necessary.

However, in mass institutions, faculty was over-

loaded with administrative-work and teaching.

The concept of disaggregation was becoming

very relevant with the advent of cutting-edge

technology. Earlier, the faculty was responsible

for full end-to-end delivery. Now, some parts of it

can be seamlessly handled by technology. For

example, curriculum-preparation could be done

by industry-experts; content-preparation can be

done by professional story-tellers and content-

developers and delivered by well-trained faculty.

The salaries of professors was also a concern.

Coming to research, there was lack of research

and focus to develop Indian Management

concepts. Our Thirukkural, Arthashastra and

Bhagavat Gita could pose as invaluable

repositories of Management and strategy. It was

very unfortunate that we bought cases on the

Dabbawalas of Mumbai, Aravind eye Hospital,

Narayana Hrudayalaya, Dr Reddy's and Tata

Motors from foreign institutions.

On family-businesses, high risk-aversion among the

youth today was a matter of concern. The

Murugappa model of succession was highly

appreciated. It was very important for family-

businesses to understand that the newer inductees

must grow through the ranks and files and work their

way up. Otherwise, the succession may not be as

smooth. It was also important to allow the next

generation to make and learn from their mistakes.

The last topic of the discussion covered online

education. Digital revolution was all about

customization. UGC presently allowed 1/6 of theth

curriculum to be delivered online. Blended learning

is the key to the future. Adaptive learning was the

latest trend. Pearson was a pioneer in this field with

it's platform called 'Knewton'. It was tailor-made

according to the needs, aptitude and capabilities of

each learner. The use of analytics also proved

extremely beneficial. Dr T G Vijaya handed over

mementoes to the panelists. The delegates then

broke for a sumptuous lunch.

In 2015, the Government of India launched the

urban renewal program “Smart Cities Mission” in

order to develop 100 cities in the country in the

upcoming years. Nowadays, the term Smart City

seems to symbolize a single track to our ecological

salvation, but which form of “smartness” is it really?

Can this transition to embody a new democratic

development model, fairly implementable on

levels? What if social and technological innovation

could happen somewhere else and differently than

in the most connected urban centers of our

globalized world? The concept of Smart City

constitutes both a challenging and inspiring

exercise we would like to explore with you. This

new hegemonic epithet invites us to question of the

future of our societies and to go beyond mainstream

representations such as those diffused by major

leading IT companies. During the two days

participants discussed various dimensions of smart

cities and finally come out with a comprehensive

approach to develop smart cities.
